I think Samamra's new 'abilities' came from the burning of the tape. It's said if you burn a weejee board after contacting a demon, you essentially open a gate to them, letting them out. Maybe burning the tape did the same thing, allowing her more power in the real world.
I also think that's the case, but it creates a plot hole of sort. Rachel made one copy of the tape at the end of the first movie. Then someone has to be seen the tape or else Rachel and Aiden should be dead. Then the tape made it to the same town as Rachel moved to, but the highschool boy was the first one to die watching it after the first movie.

So, The Ring started as a japanese novel by Kōji Suzuki, got a japanese film adaptation - and then an new american movie. And then that movie got sequels. My head...
Just saying it for sh*ts and/or giggles, but literally/technically, "it's over now" is like saying "we'll be back after a smoke break", since "now" is a span of time confined and/or separate from each other span of time, prior and future, like for example(s): "before now", "later", "tomorrow", "then", "soon", "yesterday"... If I was dumb enough to say "not now" to my gf/ someone asking me if he/she's annoying, that'd be pretty much perceived as me being a jerk, since it's the same as if I was actually stating that until right then, at that moment,, that was the case and/or I expected that person to revert back, or become annoying in a relative "soon-to-be"scenario. Since she's a ghost from the Japanese horror movie genre, there's not actually any limit to what she can do, there's just her M.O., which she can could change whenever she wants, but having her do so would go against the genre. Her M.O. should at least stay the same within any given one movie. So there should be a sin tallied for her going against Japanese horror guidelines. Oh, and a sin tallied for the protagonist thinking she actually managed to stop a ghost from the Japanese horror genre.

It didn’t even feel like the Ring. Just sticking Samara in a random action movie. We need REAL writers who will actually put heart in this franchise. There maybe still a chance. The Grudge, on the other hand, is beyond help
In "The Ring", Rachel does watch the tape multiple times but the death sentence does not extend. Instead, we see that when she watches it the second time, you can see Samara's hand emerge from the well right before it cuts to static. I'm pretty sure each day you watch it, the ending extends slightly. And more of Samara emerges. But on the final day, she emerges completely and kills you. The ending extensions were also in the japanese original, Ringu.
Although I agree with most of this, I would like to point out that Samara was never really Samara but she was possessed by a demon from birth which does make it a little more understandable.

The short film Rings explains the guy in the beginning - there's basically an entire cult going on making people watch the tape, document the exeprience, and then have a designated person (that they call the "tail") watch it. The problem is, this guy was deliberately tricked by his tail because they wanted to document, on him, what happens when you die (this is basically bullying taken to the whole next level), so he went and desperately tried to find someone else to watch it. Also, this whole "I found someone to watch the tape for me but they betrayed me" thing was a clear attempt to echo the Japanese Ring 2 where Kanae asks Okazaki to watch the tape to save her, he then doesn't but tells her he did, so she ends up dying and becoming a vengeful ghost herself, hauting him to the point he ends up being closed in a psychiatric facility.

The vibe of this movie is arguably different. In the first one, it has the bluey, cloudy, moody vibe. But in this one has sunny vibe, which I don't approve. But it has an amazing cgi
I always took the "call me Rachel for a while" bit at the end to mean adian was still possessed by the girl. Mostly because it's either that or completely stupid for her to say it considering how she told him she wanted him to call her mom earlier in the movie.

This movie and Insidious have the same problem: Trying to explain more of the villain’s backstory makes them less scary. The Ring was scary because of the slow, atmospheric build-up (with minimal shots of the villain) leading to one big scare at the end. And even though we found out what happened to Samara in the first movie we never knew her motives or why she was evil in the first place, just that she was, which made it scarier. In this one they make her more sympathetic by being like ‘She was possessed as a baby, the real Samara was willing to sacrifice herself, she just wants a mom now’. And suddenly the mysterious ghost girl becomes just another generic monster. Same thing happened with Insidious. The ending in the first one was scary because we knew nothing about the Bride in Black, but once they created a backstory in the sequel it just got stupid. And there is nothing scary about spirits undercover possessing one of the main characters and then just having chill normal conversations with another main character. Once the villains have the ability to hold a conversation the scary meter goes way down. Silent villains are always way creepier.
I see your point. It’s like when they DONT show dead faces because it leaves the imagination to the audience. But unfortunately I like Samara as a character and I’m glad she had a backstory but Honestly you may not know that The Ring is from Japan. In the Japanese version, her name is Sadako and Sadako ALSO had a background and was even seen as more innocent before becoming full demon after death. However that didn’t stop me from being scared of Sadako.
There is actually a short film that takes place in-between The Ring and The Ring Two which depicts the opening victim told to watch the tape and show someone named "Timmy" it if it was too intense and the ending of the short film the opening victim tells Emily to help him and says she's on her way which then leads to the opening scene of The Ring Two. The short is titled "Rings" Released in 2005.
Because they had to Americinize it. It is sub directed by the same man who directed who directed ringu. But because Ringu is based on a Japanese myth there is a culture gap when it translated to an American movie
PS- While I agree with most of these sins, I gotta say... I kind of LOVED said "DreamWorks/ special effect". The bath scene was by far the creepiest of the film for me. There's just something about it that takes me right back into childhood fears I can't even BEGIN to explain. The music, cascasding water everywhere, some faceless entity grabbing at a kid from below, a helpless parent walking into the middle of it all? It's a freaky fucking scene.

It didn’t even feel like the Ring. Just sticking Samara in a random action movie. We need REAL writers who will actually put heart in this franchise. There maybe still a chance. The Grudge, on the other hand, is beyond help

In "The Ring", Rachel does watch the tape multiple times but the death sentence does not extend. Instead, we see that when she watches it the second time, you can see Samara's hand emerge from the well right before it cuts to static.
I'm pretty sure each day you watch it, the ending extends slightly. And more of Samara emerges. But on the final day, she emerges completely and kills you.
The ending extensions were also in the japanese original, Ringu.

Even if you didn't see this film's "Rings" featurette, you should still know from the last movie that this wouldn't work - two of the four teenagers who died in the beginning were mentioned dying by car accident. I think it's safe to assume that she hasn't had that much experience under her belt for the whole possession trade.

The deer scene is really interesting to me. The original director of The Ring also made the recent movie A Cure for Wellness. I just saw that movie. Early on they have scenes with a deer as well. Just seems like a weird series of coincidences.

11:40 idk what it's like in america, but in germany you really CAN just walk out of a hospital. sure, at some point later, someone will ask questions, but there is no one at the door, asking "excuse me, sir, is it okay for you to leave? have you been discharged or whatever?"
The short film Rings explains the guy in the beginning - there's basically an entire cult going on making people watch the tape, document the exeprience, and then have a designated person (that they call the "tail") watch it. The problem is, this guy was deliberately tricked by his tail because they wanted to document, on him, what happens when you die (this is basically bullying taken to the whole next level), so he went and desperately tried to find someone else to watch it.
Also, this whole "I found someone to watch the tape for me but they betrayed me" thing was a clear attempt to echo the Japanese Ring 2 where Kanae asks Okazaki to watch the tape to save her, he then doesn't but tells her he did, so she ends up dying and becoming a vengeful ghost herself, hauting him to the point he ends up being closed in a psychiatric facility.

This movie and Insidious have the same problem: Trying to explain more of the villain’s backstory makes them less scary. The Ring was scary because of the slow, atmospheric build-up (with minimal shots of the villain) leading to one big scare at the end. And even though we found out what happened to Samara in the first movie we never knew her motives or why she was evil in the first place, just that she was, which made it scarier. In this one they make her more sympathetic by being like ‘She was possessed as a baby, the real Samara was willing to sacrifice herself, she just wants a mom now’. And suddenly the mysterious ghost girl becomes just another generic monster. Same thing happened with Insidious. The ending in the first one was scary because we knew nothing about the Bride in Black, but once they created a backstory in the sequel it just got stupid. And there is nothing scary about spirits undercover possessing one of the main characters and then just having chill normal conversations with another main character. Once the villains have the ability to hold a conversation the scary meter goes way down. Silent villains are always way creepier.
I see your point. It’s like when they DONT show dead faces because it leaves the imagination to the audience. But unfortunately I like Samara as a character and I’m glad she had a backstory but Honestly you may not know that The Ring is from Japan. In the Japanese version, her name is Sadako and Sadako ALSO had a background and was even seen as more innocent before becoming full demon after death. However that didn’t stop me from being scared of Sadako.
There is actually a short film that takes place in-between The Ring and The Ring Two which depicts the opening victim told to watch the tape and show someone named "Timmy" it if it was too intense and the ending of the short film the opening victim tells Emily to help him and says she's on her way which then leads to the opening scene of The Ring Two. The short is titled "Rings" Released in 2005.

The music, cascasding water everywhere, some faceless entity grabbing at a kid from below, a helpless parent walking into the middle of it all? It's a freaky fucking scene.
