Ludwig van Beethoven - ”Hammerklavier sonata”
Arvo Pärt - Für Alina
Isang Yun - Interludium A
Arvo Pärt - Variations for the Healing of Arinushka
Friedrich Gulda - from Play Piano Play
Finally - I've been looking at Kate Liu's Chopin for the past few years and Cho's recordings of Debussy, but I'm glad to hear Son Yeol-Eum again with this magnificent recording of arguably one of Beethoven's most complicated works. Perfect use of pedal, a sublime fugue and such a well-tempered left-hand, specially in the 3rd-movement. The phrasing here is really remarkable.
You have to be a total pianist, like Yeol Eum Son, to gather in one recital the Hammerklavier with the minimalist Arvo Part and the eccentric and brilliant Gulda. The contrast cannot be greater, and Yeol Eum has already shown that she is able to overcome the most difficult challenges, with which very few pianists dare.
I write these lines after a first audition of this performance, which fascinates me, but also stuns me because of its colossal complexity. I feel like a small animal, surprised by the crack of thunder, stunned by the gigantic explosion of the final Fugue, fascinated by the harmonic changes of the Adagio ... I will have to listen to it many more times, as in fact I do with all the performances of Yeol Eum Son.
Thank you, Yeol Eum, for complicating my life so much with your music, which as soon elevates me to the heights of the unattainable dream as shakes me down to the foundations like an earthquake. Both things, and much more other, that make me feel more alive.
Some years ago in her interview in Korea, she mentioned that she had given up learning Jazz piano. She didn't show up to class or something like that. Thus I'm a little surprised by Gulda's piece in the program. No, she is not a Jazz pianist ;-)
Please refrain from exalting without a hitch

Memorising all those scores of 47:50 minutes (nearly 48 mins.) performing with all those dynamic parts, she (and most of all pianists) must have a special brain.
High concentration!
Tone, taste and technique!!
All perfect!
A completely convincing vision of this lyrical masterpiece of Beethoven. This is a short work if the performer understands the shape and structure. How fortunate we are that this pianist is so committed to the great classical era works. Where is Deutsche Grammophon? They should sign up the best for Beethoven...this is it.
Pure joy to watch her play.

I am overcome by envy. I have played Beethoven sonatas (as an amateur) since I was a child. Listening to Yeol Eum Son's artistry is simply beyond comprehension for me. It's not just a matter of her towering technique. She never pounds. She uses pedal sparingly. Every phrase is thought out and constructed with perfection. Each phrase has a start and an end.
It's as though Beethoven was standing behind her and instructing her on the voices in the fugues. For those of you who have not played the piano, I advise you that this is unbelievable.
This sonata presents challenges in hold the work together, because Beethoven constructed it as almost completely separate works...not just separated movements.

So true! It's obvious you know what you are talking about unlike some others. I love Yuja, Bolet, Gilels, Sokolov, Pletnev, and Yeol Eum Son! She is a sublime artist. We are so fortunate to have RUclips. I never would have found her.
She is my favorite by far among current living pianists. She is a rare pianist who has her unique piano tone. Her performance never fails me; I tell you I'm often offended by pianists or maybe I don't understand them what they are trying to do :-) I'm happy that her best years are not yet come and she will play the piano many many more years.
PS. bucciflash, I would appreciate if you can upload the whole concert to RUclips in Full HD. I can only get the streaming link working only in 360p where I live :(
I've just recently discovered her. And yes she is amazing!
Love it!!! There are many performances to be loved for the difficult Beethoven's Hammerklavier. This is one, no doubt. Like Yuja Wang, this girl goes inside the Master Piece with her entire soul. The Adagio so moving!!!
Thanks for posting.

This is one of the most exceptional performances of the "Hammerklavier" I've ever heard. It has *nothing* to do with testosterone. (If you want a "testosterone" moment, look at the LH e-flat 46:20.) I'd suggest that Mr Pollini would note that the performance of his to which you likely refer is a studio recording with those benefits. Son's performance all the more remarkable because it's live. Everyone I know who plays op. 106 says the fugue is treacherous not just by itself, but because it comes after more than 30 difficult minutes of playing. It also feels like Son's clear, spectacularly shaped fugue is played at Beethoven's "impossible" tempo. The playing is passionate, majestic and imperial. There's no hint of strain, which this pianist finds astounding, and not one ugly measure. Thank you for posting.
Have you listened to Levit’s playing? Son’s first movement is completely incomparable to Levit’s as it is first of all under tempo and it even ignores all the motifs
The end, just before she stands up to bow to the applause, is lovely:-)
Pianist Son your are the best!

Through the miracle of television, we can see and hear the growth of a great artist.
Wonderful playing, Yeol Eum Son. And wonderful that you dare to play the great Hammerklavier sonata. Beethoven is something of a woodpecker sometimes, if I dare to say so, but a most talented woodpecker. And so these sublime moments when everything is flowing free, as a contrast...
Best performance of this piece. Bravo!!

Yeol Eum Son GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
join in the accolades. This woman breathes and is piano, this performance is arguably one of the best ever, her performances of works by other composers are equally compelling, and one can only wish we heard more from her.
0:13 is it possible to do these things one hour before the concert ?
Fantastica. Una pulizia di suono unica. L'attacco iniziale mi ha sbalordito. Forse meglio di Pollini.Grandissima.
Commendable effort! But for the slow movement I will not forget Claudio Arrau ‘s poetry, and Maurizio Pollini’s peerless sense of line & eloquence and sublime outpouring of lyrical feeling. For me, these last two remain unsurpassed in this formidable sonata.

about beethovens tempos..
i- speed(1.3).
ii- (1.1).
iii- (1.35).
iv. v- (1.1).
i think u may put the 2nd mov. after the 3rd. and leave the intro 4th mov. out..
Yeol Eum Son is such a magnificent pianist. Everything I have ever heard her play has been exceptional for my taste. She has all the chops and then some yet she is wonderfully lyrical and is a master communicator at the piano.
That said, everything was great here and then came the fugue. She takes it at way too fast a clip to the point of losing some musicality. Jorge Bolet used to say "nothing kills beautiful piano playing more than excessive speed". Of course, he could play as fast as anybody if he wanted to.
A little more restraint in the fugue and I'd give it the highest marks.
Although I´m a fan of Yeol, I would like to recommend or make a point for a faster version of the Adagio, which is played by Gulda. This Adagio is absurdly long and seems to lose itself constantly, roaming about aimlessly. It is hard for me to listen through it and to keep an "overview" or to keep track of a context.
Gulda keeps this piece more compact with his faster and straight forward style of playing, making it better digestible. I think he also has a lighter touch at times, and then again more temper, creating a bit more contrast, which also helps to keep track with and connect the musical ideas of this Adagio.
Gulda has a softer sound overall, he seems to play a different piano, maybe a Bösendorfer. If I´m not mistaken, here we have a Steinway, and although I love the piano in Jazz, I think its sound is to hard or brilliant for this Adagio. Of course there could be other reasons for this, like for instance the recording techniques, so please correct me if I'm wrong about the pianos.
I agree with your comments but did not dare to share my opinion because Yeol has such a marvelous technique. For this sonata the sound needs to be darker.
@@michelbensadon3752 I find Yeol awesome, especially when she plays piano concertos. The 15th of Mozart I like a lot, and I think her performance is wonderful there. Sadly, some people in the audience are coughing a lot during the second movement. I wish somebody would edit these noises out, but I don't know wether it's possible or not.
Hell i was just enjoying this, and then I read the comments.

OK. I've decided. YES is a consummate artist. But the Hammerklavier isn't my cup of tea.
Whatever was Beethoven thinking?
@@republiccooper Whatever was Beethoven thinking when he wrote the Grosse Fugue? These pieces surpass the superficial and must be inhabited by the listener- sometimes for years.
@@marichristian1072 I have listened to it but must confess that I don't understand the piece. I'm unlikely to learn it. Respect it though I must.

Wow, the piano technician obviously had a day off. That out of tune treble right from the start really is highly annoying. I love her playing, but this piano really is a disgrace.
There is great instrumental control but not the sonic substance needed for a convincing rendition of late Beethoven.
She hates the pedal.
@@psijicassassin7166 You are right. It makes for a clinical presentation.
The Fugue is pretty strange ........ her pianism is nice, clear, a little boring.
Her sentiment is not passion but precision.
For me the illness of our time.
Drying everything on its way.
Even God's Garden, becoming suddenly some football stadium.
Antidote : Artur Schnabel and HJ Lim.
Beautiful sound, musical phrasing, but...too slow tempi! Beethoven put his metronome markings there for a reason: he WANTED his movements to be fast! Try them, and you will listen to a totally different work. Sorry-no applause...
you do realise that the metronome markings Beethoven gave us are literally impossible? No recording in history has played to his metronome marking.
@@LachlanTyrrell2003 There is no "impossible"
@@KaterinaStamatelos The past century of pianists disagree with you. The only recording I know of that approaches Beethoven's metronome marking for the Hammerklavier is by Schnabel
ruclips.net/video/7U0eISeT92k/видео.html&ab_channel=JackyVong
Skip to the fugue and many, many mistakes are made.
@@LachlanTyrrell2003 it is not important what "the pianists" say, but what Beethoven himself wished for. He placed metronome markings ONLY on this sonata. And them he also sent it to his publisher with the note "I have written a sonata that will keep pianists very busy for generations to come." So, he knew how difficult it was: that's what he wanted. Also: many things have been labeled as "impossible" and yet some people have found a way to achieve them. This sonata is for pianists with nerves made out of steel...Also, with an adoration for this specific work.

Yeol Eum Son played the first fugue of the fourth movement with 5' 14 minutes. HJ Lim managed to play in her Live Video "Hammerklavier Fugue" the by Beethoven prescripted speed of unbelievable 4' 46 minutes [ 144 Mälzel per crotchet]
May be it is anything else, but it is no Beethoven at all. Her tone is too thin and there is no conception and inner tension; it is just a superficial training of one of the deepest pieces of the whole piano literature.
그럼 당신이 직접 연주해봐요
@@최희승-f7j No, I´ll let play this sonata other (better) pianists, e.g. Solomon, Richter - today Trifonov.
I really love Son, but I definitely don't feel she has enough testosterone to do justice to this piece. Listen to Maurizio Pollini's version - that one is transportive.
naaaah
The Hammerklavier is not a hammerfest, it is a lyrical masterpiece. This pianist is focused on the shape and structure of this work. Of other pianists, only Gould also saw the melodic contours in such a convincing vision. It seems like a short work if the interpreter understands it. We are fortunate to have this performer available to play the classical masterworks.
But the progesterone reigns in here!
Valentina Lisitsa does the fugue part as well as anybody (in history, I'll bet), so it's not testosterone that's lacking here. I just think it may need big concert hall acoustics to really impress.
Misogynistic comments makes me so sad and tired. She's magnificent, what is your problem. This is not a sport of comparison but Claudio Arrau was also a good pianist. We all do our best, don't we ?
