I found this interesting but lacking. it didn't cover the brunt of Marian's life with Fred Trump senior -- only her earlier years and her succeeding wealth. As at least one of her children demonstrates regularly, wealth isn't everything.
There is nothimg "exposed" about Donald Trump's mother (as might be otherwise surmised from the clickbait title of this video). It is very much the story of the early lives of Mary Anne (nee MacLeod) Trump and a Scottish girl who became her long time pen pal, beginning before Mary Anne MacLeod followed her siblings in leaving the tiny village on the small Scottish island where she was born and raised.
The narration of this documentary (which juxtaposes early pictures with what seem to be soundless re-enactment scenes) is sparse, sober, and seemingly objective. Some might find the interspersing of rare images of Mrs. Trump with roll-in historical film footage objectionable; it unaccountably juxtaposes her image in the best of times (traveling, a published wedding picture, sitting in front of an early home in New York showing off her firstborn) with sequences of images of groups of people in their worst of times (suffering during the Great Depression and wartime and generally struggling), a seeming silent editorial background commentary that the producer is unwilling to outright own.
Indeed, the video starts with a long set of news video clips of activists standing and marching -- in opposition to her son Donald J. Trump and in support of him. There's plenty of other footage archived around the internet which likely could have been lifted to set time and place of Donald Trump's newsworthy status, without litigation over copyright violation, under the doctrine of Fair Use.
However, the more relevant docmentary aspects of this production do introduce us to the particular landscape of Mary Anne's island birthplace, the stone house where her parents started their large family, and the more modern dwelling where she and many of her siblings were raised.
The narrator is careful to point out that her father (Donald's grandfather) secured multiple lines of income in that seemingly desolate environment, including as a postmaster, ensuring that more of his offspring survived than reliably would occurr in that environment -- with the flow of postal correspondence perhaps providing tangible evidence that a wider outside world existed, and could be accessed.
The reasonably predictable arc of the story is satisfied with the reunion of the two youthful pen pals in posh surroundings in their aging years, hardly requiring a "spoiler alert".
For its modest aspirations -- based on some fundamental facts, photographs, and findings -- the story is nicely told.
This simple, straightforth account of the life of Donald Trump's mother, primarily as revealed in pen pal correspondence, has little to do with how she raised her family, or with his career as a builder, or his subsquent TV or political careers -- in the tradition of travelogues featuring the ancestral homes of modern American presidents. It could have been presented in half the time.
Disappointingly, some if the haters have been out in force in this comment section, eager to share reactions that disclose more about themselves than about the U.S. president or any member of the Trump family, past or present.
