The barbarian-librarian joke is extra funny to me ... because that was literally the design brief of my partner's first character in 5e. Grell the Learned was a human barbarian who ran a travelling library - basically one of those Scholastic book fair trolleys. Absolute sweetheart of a guy, very polite even when raging, got turned into a zombie at one time but he was chill
I made a one shot character that enjoyed reading and prefered it to anything else and got angry when she couldn't read her book in peace and what not. It was a great character that I enjoyed playing and hope I can play it one way again.
One of the party members in my current campaign is a barbarian librarian. She's trying to put together the texts of her tribe because she's tired of oral history and wants to get a version of it which hasn't clearly gone through several rounds of embellishment where the acts of strength have gotten steadily more ridiculous 😅

I'm glad Andy and Ellen know Counterspell, it's the best spell in the game in terms of sheer drama. The best bang for your buck you can get out of Counterspell is if more than two characters in the scene have it and, and you have a process of: - Enemy One: Casts a world-ending spell - PC One: Casts Counterspell - Enemy Two: Casts Counterspell on the Counterspell - PC Two: Casts Counterspell to Counterspell the Counterspell I've never been in a campaign where I've gotten it past three in a row before, but one can always hope!
Some of whether it's dramatic depends on whether the players and DM can take the opportunity to lean into the drama. Or the comedy, depending on the tone of the campaign.
I guess when I mean dramatic, it's dramatic in the same way that a game of Yu-Gi-Oh can be dramatic even if all the players are actively joking. It's mechanical drama even if the players don't spin it that way.
I’m excited to see where Jane and Mikes characters go. Mike obviously had a deep backstory for Egbert that still had secrets left to tell, I hope we get more of that flavour in this series. Always wanted more character development from Jane, her character right now is pretty mysterious and blank canvas-y for her do something really interesting with

This new D&D campagin is so exciting! I'm totally vibing with the horror folklore vibe. Very fitting for the autumn season. The new characters are already super fun, very curious to see how they all play together in the future. I like the more serious approach too. I really enjoyed that in Blades in the Dark and in Deadlands, so I'm happy to see it in a D&D setting as well Will be looking forward to the future episodes!
I really like that Andy's character is like Logen Ninefingers/The Bloody Nine, but with less brutally murdering literally everyone nearby 😂 I've wanted to play a character with DID for ages and it's cool to see it done!
I can see robin and morvin's situation being concluded 1 of 3 possible ways 1:tag team, Robin is awake at day morvin is awake at night they both get equal time in control 2: fusion, they merge into 1 new character who is the best of both (my person favorite option) 3: they get morvin a body (a but broing in my opinion but it'd work)
At the moment morven seems to be dropping hints that she wants to usurp the current body, so I’m intrigued by the conflict of possible option 4: one of them kills the other

It's really fun to see the thought process between characters, and how it's been influenced by their shared experiences with TTRPGs. Doubly fun when you take in the context of this all starting as a one-off where they made some characters on a whim and now we're here about seven years later!

I will admit that I miss the humor and silly of the Oxventurers Guild, they never failed to make me laugh, but I am super into the new campaign and characters after only this first episode.
I really want Johnny to actually spend this entire campaign secretly building to a climactic conclusion with a character named "Sigmund" as the ultimate antagonist.... Luke said it sarcastically, Johnny played it up as a joke... now make it a reality and i'll laugh my ass off in 4-5years time.
Firstly: Johnny I'm gonna need that recommended movies/vibes/etc list. We got the album you listened to but now that I've heard there's additional specific inspirational touchstones I need them all. I mean- pretty please? Secondly, I'm really excited for the exploration of the characters in this world! I agree with what you lot said about how it's fun to have these characters and this world made with intention of specific themes and knowing ahead of time it'll be a continued thing, rather than taking what was built for a one shot and expanding it as it goes. Both incredibly fun, but I love me some focused narrative. And great to see that the classic OX humor is still here- a perfect mix of silly fun with friends as well as existing within a deeper story. I'm also biased because the vibes and themes here are some of my favorites lol. I've had characters with similar cores to Luke's and Andy's, and those are some really fun stories to explore. I love the point Andy brought up about both people wanting to be in control, the bit about Morven wanting coffee to stay awake so she doesn't give way to Robin, whom she seems to hate. And Robin being clueless, but not fond of waking up in unexplained places and would presumably not be fond of someone else trying to keep him out of his own body. The character I played like this had a really cool moment where he hated the parasite that pushed him out of his body and thought it was evil, but the parasite was just chilling, so every time they switched the OG guy would be like "what did that beast do now" and the answer was go to a petting zoo. Made for some incredible tension among party members who knew both characters and took sides, as well as perpetuated some juicy character misunderstandings because my characters wouldn't remember what they did when the other was in control and then base their understanding of the situation on incorrect assumptions. It's also incredibly fun as a player to jump between different characters that oppose each other but are stuck with each other, and despite being in the same body are doomed to only understand the other through hearing what they did second hand. Incredibly fun to roleplay different perspectives and be able to poke at things with different characters because you as a player know that it would make an interesting story beat because of what you know about the other character you're playing. Tons of potential for tons of different fun juicy plots and I'm so excited to see where Andy takes it (and where he gets taken). The fact that Robin doesn't even know yet that he's got another person in him is so exciting alone, nevermind thinking about what his reaction will be when he finds out! Or if Morven intends to keep it a secret from him, or what the party will say as mediators between the two. So much I'm excited to see progress, yet if I go on more it'll become even more of an essay than it already is, so you're safe for now. I'm at work during episode premiere times, so most of the time I unfortunately wont be able to catch them live, but the second I'm off the clock I'm rushing straight here. See you friday!

Oh fantastic, I had been wondering how everyone came up with their character concepts, it was really enjoyable and interesting to get some insight into it ☺
Just a note: Jane says she "likes the character sheets that come out of the new PHB". They don't. You need to buy character sheets separately, or use their app. Of course, you can always just print your own sheets, but the official ones are no longer included in the book. Which is a small beef to have, but a beef I have nonetheless.
Our group recently retconned their 2014 characters. Not all the way back to Level 1, but where it made sense, we added in some of the new features (Rogue Steady Aim, Cleric Divine Spark, Weapon Mastery for Martial classes, we swapped in the Hunter’s Mark table for the UA WIS modifier). Plus we all got to dive into Tools to make existing proficiencies actually work for some purpose. I really like how Origins influence starting Ability Score modifiers. So much cleaner. All in all looking forward to running these new rules, updated spell descriptions, and so on.
It has been nice seeing a lot of the changes in the new PHB (like the monk rebalancing and the removal of contested rolls), and the fact that they keep it mostly straightforward to bring in old material makes up for the weaker aspects like the very restrictive backgrounds. They've also already started correcting the mistakes in the online version of the PHB (like Goliaths, grappler, or summon giant insect), so print buyers be on the lookout for your errata in the near future!
loving that we are learning a little more about everyone's character and how they came up with them, looking forward to see how they grow through out the adventure
So as a martial artist, I guess I need to add another stance to my repertoire: the Happen Stance. I imagine it's a very lackadaisical, non-specific stance that neither guards nor provides footing for a quick attack, but just waits for whatever will happen to happen.
I always found it hilarious when the injured person, e.g. Dob, would have to ask for healing and the healer, e.g. Egbert, would say "oh go on then🙄" in an exhausted tone, followed up by the injured person saying (passive-aggressively) "not if it's any trouble!" 😂
Cool characters. It'll be interesting to see how the healing stacks up against the damage here. (Barbarians and specialised healers are always a fun combination.) I could be wrong but I feel like this might be quite a high wisdom party with less charisma and dexterity (although Morven and Happen presumably have a bit of those respectively) so it'll be fun to see our Oxventurers adapt to that. Of course no party composition is a bad one if everyone is enjoying the game but I suspect the party member in charge of opening locked doors here might the barbarian. Other than that with psionics, sprites and illusions I feel there's even more potential for shenanigans than ever before.
I actually run a PC named "Cronan the Librarian," half orc barbarian librarian. He loans out books to the party (Tusk Love, Finding Your Inner Rage, etc)... but good luck to you if you don't return it.

I was already letting my PCs choose a background that doesn't match their class bc... people can be anything from anywhere and I like that in dnd, so the new PHB is so fun to me and I can't wait to see it myself lol

I kinda agree with Jane on this. I often ended up with the role of healer myself because the rest of my party all wanted to poke everything with sharp "pointy sticks" and someone had to keep them alive. The secondary role didn't really bother me; I prefer playing a long range character.

I've always really loved folk horror and magic having a cost and the fae being quite alien so this setting is just ~delicious~. Gonna enjoy watching everyone dealing with the little luck pervert XD
About 1/3 into the first episode (when I noticed his little character card said "commoner") I guessed that Robin's class was going to come out the first time he died, though I was expecting him to be resurrected as a warlock by a patron. Very excited for the next episode & the rest of the season!
Interesting to see the immediate adaptions to the new character creation. After reading the rules I was also like "Change this, add half-elves back in, that's a hard no, etc".
Burning question: did the players know about each others characters before the first session, or are they discovering things about each other at the same time as their character? Thinking about things like Morven that weren’t apparent from the start, or possible other future secrets characters may reveal. Did the players all know that was Andy’s plan from the get go, or were they equally as in the dark about what the normal human man’s deal was?
You def learn from your mistakes like not having counterspell or in my instance, not having shield and getting blasted to bits by magic missile. Now I always have shield.
I'd like more info on how you decided the half species traits. As an Eberron DM the removal of half races have been a sticking point with my players and interested how you helped decide how they would work.
So this cadence die is d20 but I'd like to know which numbers it replaces. In the video it's said that a 12 can be rolled as ¨mediocre roll¨ so I suppose it would be 1 1 1 1 1 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 but I would like to hear the reasoning behind why a 1 2 1 4 1 6 1 8 1 10 11 20 13 20 15 20 17 20 19 20 distribution wasn't used
@NewAge374 that would have required pasting new numbers in random* places on the surface of the die. Luke chose to use a 5×1 endcap and a 5×20 endcap for the least disruption of the die, keeping the unmodified numbers contiguous (and the 1s contiguous, and the 20s contiguous). *I know dice are numbered to set patterns, but those patterns are designed to evenly distribute the numbers around the dice so picking specific numbers leaves a die with weird modifications strewn all over the die.

Great to hear more of the thoughts on the character creation - one thing that confused me in episode one is that Luke only seemed to be firing his bow once per turn, but if he's 5th-level he should be making two attacks same as Lug? Does someone need to poke Luke to make sure he's doing the right number of attacks?
Probably still getting used to that cause dob just attacked once. They will get used to the skills in due time. Same for Lug not using reckless attack. I was more worried about Lug having a 12 AC when unarmoured defense with a +1 in dex and a +2 in con would be 13. So i guess he wears a leather armor? And without it would be faster? 😅
@@Blackdracko7 Dob had an extra attack, but was mostly focused on spellcasting. Luke used it to attack after casting a spell a time or two before realising that wasn't how it worked (and pointing that out to Mike a few chapters later.)
Hearing Andy talk about his character was oddly creepy for me as I'm called Robin and that character is weirdly similar to the one I've recently started playing after ending my forever-DM streak (using Undead Warlock rather than a sorcerer).
Personally a split personality character with two character sheets and the fact their alignments are opposed is a big red flag. I think it’s been balanced well though. One being a commoner and the other quite powerful means that Andy isn’t power-gaming and the mitigation that the characters exchange through unconsciousness not on the whim of Andy accessing a different skill set when needed. Andy himself said corazon wasn’t initially fleshed out and was a trope pirate with a plagiarised jack sparrow backstory. But luckily Andy adopted a great backstory and developed the character well.
I like that Robin isn’t so much a character sheet, but the commoner stat block. It’s almost a Jekyll & Hyde/ Bruce Banner & The Hulk vibe, but the “normal” one doesn’t have any appreciable skills. It makes me wonder how they’re going to trigger the transformation between them in the future when they need Morvin. They could knock Robin out, but attacking him has already been shown to piss Morvin off. Maybe the Sleep spell? Or some magical version of chloroform? They could always just ask the two what they’d prefer, I suppose…
I think it's also worth noting that in these sorts of productions that traditional red flags aren't necessarily red, as the group has a very strong pre-existing dynamic that is professional as well as personal, and the audience facing aspect is something most groups don't grapple with. All the games so far for example have had a token evil teammate, often a red flag but great entertainment.
There's very little scope for powergaming with what Andy's put together. At best, Robin and Morven have something resembling sleep immunity and a lot of the time they're barely a functional player character. It even seems like Morven takes Robin's damage so Robin's not even a one-time shield.
Totally agree with what everyone’s said. They are an established group with good reason to create a balanced party and not break the game In the video they’ve said that original oxventure character design was trope-y and that they’ve moved on to a more in-world considered approach. Maybe I’m sensitive to my red flags and I’m more likely to interpret a “possessed by another” character, as a game breaking “my character is a split personality with two character sheets”. I’m prepared to say I’m wrong I was also worried about Ellen role-playing as the character “who doesn’t want to engage with the party”. I’m now convinced that the role playing she intends to play is more chaos merchant, fun self-interested. At the end of the day as long as Ellen enjoys herself we’re all happy.
It really speaks to the impact of the WoTC scandals that they're sponsoring a campaign to pump the new PHB. I mean, good for you, and the ad revenue couldn't go to a better group, but it feels a little unreal that they're having to Pay for the exposure, when any previous edition would get out there with excitement with nothing but a free sample or even just early access. They're hurting, and trying their best not to show it.

Secondly, I'm really excited for the exploration of the characters in this world! I agree with what you lot said about how it's fun to have these characters and this world made with intention of specific themes and knowing ahead of time it'll be a continued thing, rather than taking what was built for a one shot and expanding it as it goes. Both incredibly fun, but I love me some focused narrative. And great to see that the classic OX humor is still here- a perfect mix of silly fun with friends as well as existing within a deeper story.
I'm also biased because the vibes and themes here are some of my favorites lol. I've had characters with similar cores to Luke's and Andy's, and those are some really fun stories to explore. I love the point Andy brought up about both people wanting to be in control, the bit about Morven wanting coffee to stay awake so she doesn't give way to Robin, whom she seems to hate. And Robin being clueless, but not fond of waking up in unexplained places and would presumably not be fond of someone else trying to keep him out of his own body. The character I played like this had a really cool moment where he hated the parasite that pushed him out of his body and thought it was evil, but the parasite was just chilling, so every time they switched the OG guy would be like "what did that beast do now" and the answer was go to a petting zoo. Made for some incredible tension among party members who knew both characters and took sides, as well as perpetuated some juicy character misunderstandings because my characters wouldn't remember what they did when the other was in control and then base their understanding of the situation on incorrect assumptions.
It's also incredibly fun as a player to jump between different characters that oppose each other but are stuck with each other, and despite being in the same body are doomed to only understand the other through hearing what they did second hand. Incredibly fun to roleplay different perspectives and be able to poke at things with different characters because you as a player know that it would make an interesting story beat because of what you know about the other character you're playing. Tons of potential for tons of different fun juicy plots and I'm so excited to see where Andy takes it (and where he gets taken). The fact that Robin doesn't even know yet that he's got another person in him is so exciting alone, nevermind thinking about what his reaction will be when he finds out! Or if Morven intends to keep it a secret from him, or what the party will say as mediators between the two.
So much I'm excited to see progress, yet if I go on more it'll become even more of an essay than it already is, so you're safe for now. I'm at work during episode premiere times, so most of the time I unfortunately wont be able to catch them live, but the second I'm off the clock I'm rushing straight here. See you friday!

Always love hearing the other media that give people the spark of their character ideas. Would not have clocked Zappa/S-ko for Robin/Morven, but now it's obvious and I can't unsee it.
I got into the campaign very late and just gave up, so I can't wait to follow this one from the get-go. 😄

Just a note: Jane says she "likes the character sheets that come out of the new PHB". They don't. You need to buy character sheets separately, or use their app. Of course, you can always just print your own sheets, but the official ones are no longer included in the book. Which is a small beef to have, but a beef I have nonetheless.
Mat from the Wheel of Time's powers are also based on luck.
Our group recently retconned their 2014 characters. Not all the way back to Level 1, but where it made sense, we added in some of the new features (Rogue Steady Aim, Cleric Divine Spark, Weapon Mastery for Martial classes, we swapped in the Hunter’s Mark table for the UA WIS modifier). Plus we all got to dive into Tools to make existing proficiencies actually work for some purpose. I really like how Origins influence starting Ability Score modifiers. So much cleaner. All in all looking forward to running these new rules, updated spell descriptions, and so on.
It has been nice seeing a lot of the changes in the new PHB (like the monk rebalancing and the removal of contested rolls), and the fact that they keep it mostly straightforward to bring in old material makes up for the weaker aspects like the very restrictive backgrounds. They've also already started correcting the mistakes in the online version of the PHB (like Goliaths, grappler, or summon giant insect), so print buyers be on the lookout for your errata in the near future!
loving that we are learning a little more about everyone's character and how they came up with them, looking forward to see how they grow through out the adventure

So as a martial artist, I guess I need to add another stance to my repertoire: the Happen Stance. I imagine it's a very lackadaisical, non-specific stance that neither guards nor provides footing for a quick attack, but just waits for whatever will happen to happen.

The Oxventurer's Guild had 3 healers: Dob, Merilwen and Egbert. Well, who *could* heal. Obvously they all tended to not actually do it.

I always found it hilarious when the injured person, e.g. Dob, would have to ask for healing and the healer, e.g. Egbert, would say "oh go on then🙄" in an exhausted tone, followed up by the injured person saying (passive-aggressively) "not if it's any trouble!" 😂
Cool characters. It'll be interesting to see how the healing stacks up against the damage here. (Barbarians and specialised healers are always a fun combination.) I could be wrong but I feel like this might be quite a high wisdom party with less charisma and dexterity (although Morven and Happen presumably have a bit of those respectively) so it'll be fun to see our Oxventurers adapt to that. Of course no party composition is a bad one if everyone is enjoying the game but I suspect the party member in charge of opening locked doors here might the barbarian. Other than that with psionics, sprites and illusions I feel there's even more potential for shenanigans than ever before.
My copy of the new PHB will be arriving in a few days. I plan on using it to make a mix into a sort of 5.5e with the best of both rulesets

I kinda agree with Jane on this. I often ended up with the role of healer myself because the rest of my party all wanted to poke everything with sharp "pointy sticks" and someone had to keep them alive. The secondary role didn't really bother me; I prefer playing a long range character.

About 1/3 into the first episode (when I noticed his little character card said "commoner") I guessed that Robin's class was going to come out the first time he died, though I was expecting him to be resurrected as a warlock by a patron. Very excited for the next episode & the rest of the season!

Interesting to see the immediate adaptions to the new character creation. After reading the rules I was also like "Change this, add half-elves back in, that's a hard no, etc".
Burning question: did the players know about each others characters before the first session, or are they discovering things about each other at the same time as their character? Thinking about things like Morven that weren’t apparent from the start, or possible other future secrets characters may reveal. Did the players all know that was Andy’s plan from the get go, or were they equally as in the dark about what the normal human man’s deal was?
Sounds like they had maybe the basis for Class/Race... Not sure about Andy's though
You def learn from your mistakes like not having counterspell or in my instance, not having shield and getting blasted to bits by magic missile. Now I always have shield.
I'd like more info on how you decided the half species traits. As an Eberron DM the removal of half races have been a sticking point with my players and interested how you helped decide how they would work.

So this cadence die is d20 but I'd like to know which numbers it replaces.
In the video it's said that a 12 can be rolled as ¨mediocre roll¨ so I suppose it would be 1 1 1 1 1 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 but I would like to hear the reasoning behind why a 1 2 1 4 1 6 1 8 1 10 11 20 13 20 15 20 17 20 19 20 distribution wasn't used
@NewAge374 that would have required pasting new numbers in random* places on the surface of the die. Luke chose to use a 5×1 endcap and a 5×20 endcap for the least disruption of the die, keeping the unmodified numbers contiguous (and the 1s contiguous, and the 20s contiguous).
*I know dice are numbered to set patterns, but those patterns are designed to evenly distribute the numbers around the dice so picking specific numbers leaves a die with weird modifications strewn all over the die.

Great to hear more of the thoughts on the character creation - one thing that confused me in episode one is that Luke only seemed to be firing his bow once per turn, but if he's 5th-level he should be making two attacks same as Lug? Does someone need to poke Luke to make sure he's doing the right number of attacks?
I'm sure he made at least one extra attack - there was a wacky luck shot immediately followed by a regular.
Probably still getting used to that cause dob just attacked once. They will get used to the skills in due time. Same for Lug not using reckless attack.
I was more worried about Lug having a 12 AC when unarmoured defense with a +1 in dex and a +2 in con would be 13. So i guess he wears a leather armor? And without it would be faster? 😅
He attacked twice when he shot the first commoner in both eye sockets.
@@Blackdracko7 Dob had an extra attack, but was mostly focused on spellcasting. Luke used it to attack after casting a spell a time or two before realising that wasn't how it worked (and pointing that out to Mike a few chapters later.)

Hearing Andy talk about his character was oddly creepy for me as I'm called Robin and that character is weirdly similar to the one I've recently started playing after ending my forever-DM streak (using Undead Warlock rather than a sorcerer).

Personally a split personality character with two character sheets and the fact their alignments are opposed is a big red flag.
I think it’s been balanced well though. One being a commoner and the other quite powerful means that Andy isn’t power-gaming and the mitigation that the characters exchange through unconsciousness not on the whim of Andy accessing a different skill set when needed.
Andy himself said corazon wasn’t initially fleshed out and was a trope pirate with a plagiarised jack sparrow backstory. But luckily Andy adopted a great backstory and developed the character well.
I like that Robin isn’t so much a character sheet, but the commoner stat block. It’s almost a Jekyll & Hyde/ Bruce Banner & The Hulk vibe, but the “normal” one doesn’t have any appreciable skills. It makes me wonder how they’re going to trigger the transformation between them in the future when they need Morvin. They could knock Robin out, but attacking him has already been shown to piss Morvin off. Maybe the Sleep spell? Or some magical version of chloroform?
They could always just ask the two what they’d prefer, I suppose…
I think it's also worth noting that in these sorts of productions that traditional red flags aren't necessarily red, as the group has a very strong pre-existing dynamic that is professional as well as personal, and the audience facing aspect is something most groups don't grapple with. All the games so far for example have had a token evil teammate, often a red flag but great entertainment.
There's very little scope for powergaming with what Andy's put together. At best, Robin and Morven have something resembling sleep immunity and a lot of the time they're barely a functional player character. It even seems like Morven takes Robin's damage so Robin's not even a one-time shield.
Well Robin is effectively four extra hit points. It's not even close to being unhealthy
Totally agree with what everyone’s said. They are an established group with good reason to create a balanced party and not break the game
In the video they’ve said that original oxventure character design was trope-y and that they’ve moved on to a more in-world considered approach.
Maybe I’m sensitive to my red flags and I’m more likely to interpret a “possessed by another” character, as a game breaking “my character is a split personality with two character sheets”. I’m prepared to say I’m wrong
I was also worried about Ellen role-playing as the character “who doesn’t want to engage with the party”. I’m now convinced that the role playing she intends to play is more chaos merchant, fun self-interested. At the end of the day as long as Ellen enjoys herself we’re all happy.
They're all so so different from the Oxventurers guild.
It really speaks to the impact of the WoTC scandals that they're sponsoring a campaign to pump the new PHB. I mean, good for you, and the ad revenue couldn't go to a better group, but it feels a little unreal that they're having to Pay for the exposure, when any previous edition would get out there with excitement with nothing but a free sample or even just early access.
They're hurting, and trying their best not to show it.
Yeah I don't mind these guys taking the money offered, but I'm not giving Hasbro any of mine. I'll still watch these guys and enjoy.

I get the feeling that this group of characters aren't intended to last past this season. A number of them sound pretty experimental.
