Mariah Carey -VS- Whitney Houston - ULTIMATE BELTING BATTLE!

- I started this video very low, which may or may not be a sort of preview to a new video I'm working on (with SEVERAL vocalists :P)
Who do you like better? Follow the insta! @camden.epperson
Whitneys belts were so huge, akin to tsunami, with an EXTREMELY even vibrato like how? And she was so consistent too.
Mariah obviously wasn’t primarily known for her belts but gosh how piercing her belts were, like a light penetrating a dark space. It’s a miracle that she could sing like that with nodules.
Legendary vocalists! I absolutely adore Whitney’s power and vibrato when belting! Likewise, I admire Mariah’s tonal quality and effortlessness throughout her belting range. I would consider them equals at their best with Whitney having an edge when it comes to consistency! Great video as always, Camden!
Thanks for watching! Have a lovely day
Honestly, they both have totally different strengths, so in some ways, it's hard to fairly compare them because their vocal anatomies are vastly different. Mariah's tone as she ascends the belting range is simply remarkable; it's like her voice brightens the higher she goes. Whitney has more power and is overall more consistent and she can sustain like absolutely no other, but Mariah's tonal quality and phrasing just astonishes me. I love both.
Both are signature vocalists. Two of the absolute best. Where one lacks, the other has strength. They are literally ying and yang. What I find beautiful and interesting about them is despite having very similar vocal influences, being around similar ages, and having similar genre versatility, they are still so technically opposite.
In terms of this video, I would say that Whitney in her prime showed the more demanding technique, so the fact that (in the 80s), her Bel Canto style approach to upper belts is remarkable, and her sustaining is unmatched.
But where Mariah surpasses in upper belting is utilizing mixed registration (which tends to be healthier in the long run), giving her a nice light and lifted sound, to be able to phrase back to back, which is incredibly difficult to pull off.
This isn’t really a fair comparison video. As someone else said, one is a dynamic belter who can do runs while the other (due to nodules in part) is a runner who can belt. Both are legendary talents that shouldn’t be compared.
Perfect description.
whitney belting C5 sounds so much like mariah, its crazy how whitney and mariah sound alike on a lot of notes
There was this one belted note Celine did and I swear it sounded identical to Whitney, can't remember which note though

@blackmamba3429 no, it's not a Whitney song. But that's a good one too but the one I'm referring to is even better!
i still prefer hearing Mariah's voice. Her songs are always on my playlist cuz she has endless bops to choose from. Her tone and everything about her voice is just so good.
Her discography is amazing
That’s why she has 19no1s she gave more of her voice she got 19no1s simple as that
@@uditsahu4537 she has those because she sold singles for 50 cents. That’s why after 1995 they were number one for a week or two. It’s known in the early 90’s that Tommy Mottola used to pay radio to play her.
@@AAS248441 where is the proof?

Whitney’s belting is much more even than Mariah’s.
Whitney’s C#5, Eb5 ( colossal ) , E5, F5, F#5 and G5 are definitely better than Mariah’s.
Wtf Whitney was better on the last 5 notes stop being biased 😂
@@whitneyfan7107 It's very clear that YOU'RE the one who's biased here seeing as you're a Whitney fan (according to your username). I like them both equally. Plus, unlike most people, I'm not biased when it comes to these things because I have done research on vocal pedagogy and learnt from vocal coaches (NOT RUclips vocal coaches). Whitney was also really good on those top notes but Mariah's upper belts were evidently a lot freer.
@@varunravi27you'r the one who's biased lmao Mariah sounds lighter compared to Whitney who had more roundness and power
@@allykelly Of course she sounds lighter. Her voice is brighter and lighter than Whitney's.
Whitney Houston voice was everything. 🥰
Well belting imo shows Mariah more consistent actually as her tone doesnt really change much due to her ease in her entire belting range. From D5 (and especially Eb5 and up) she really takes the cake as her voice seems to gain more strength here and she is as agile and supported and free as she ever is. Whitney loses her rounded, powerful earthy tone once past D5 which is understandable due to how much heavier and thicker her voice is in comparison to Mariah's. However from the first not to the C#5, she pretty much was the best of the two, her tone and pitch never wavering and making it look as easy as speaking. They have different vocal types, tones and styles of singing overall so its more of a contrast of how two people sound great in different ways instead of who is better.
I love that last sentence!
🎯
yes Whitney at D5 and lower is better. Mariah above that in her earlier years was just awesome and better. Both are amazing period.
Major parts of what you said simply aren't true:
1)They aren't different voice types
2)Mariah is just as inconsistent above Eb5 most of the times, you just know only good examples, while there're tons of bad/iffy ones even in her prime
3)What you're hearing by "losing her powerful earthy tone" simply means she sings above 2 passagio, same thing happens with Mariah, if you pay attention, cause it's simply impossible to maintain that quality you have in your lower notes
4)Mariah and "her pitch never wavering" is simply ridiculous considering how pitchy she was even in studio (for example, recording Emotions), and she's pitchy live in general, believe me, I did my research
@@lightning0506 don't need search dude , you think Whitney is always on pitch ? If you'll say yes , you're stupid!
They are different vocal type ! Whitney is a better midbelter than nobody could ever be , but Mariah's entire belting range (even above E5) are simply unmatchable !
Mariah's quality of tone above E5 is better controlled (just look how easy it is for her in her prime). Whitney's tone became tighter and piercings on the upper belt while Mariah take it so resonant and light .
Their both amazing 🔥
Just admit they're somehow different 😒
1:19 Whitney held that note for 16 seconds THE BIGGEST EVER!! without comparison.

You should had use them instead those in this video , it will be an real ultimate battle
I will start that both are two of the most beautiful and perfect voices EVER. But for belting Whitney is CLEARLY better, her technic and her genetics make her placement literally perfect. That’s also why she was able to have a more than 10 years of vocal prime while using her voice at 100% NONSTOP for 20 years without the help of any playback. That’s scary how strong her instrument was.
no comparison at all.. Mariah is not a belter in the way Whitney was. Whitney did this times for 160 states. Stamina for days..
@@odumosuolusegun2781while i agree whitney had an edge in belting, its stupid to say theres no comparison as if mariah was SO much levels below her lol. Its one thing if u prefer whitneys style or tone by far, however to lie and act like mariahs vibrato wasnt one of the best when she chose to use it, her breath control and stamina are literally on par with whitneys and i could even debate it was better, and she had far more resonance, so to belittle her like that is wild. While i do prefer whitneys vibrato and would call it one of if not the best vibrato of all time, it was technically unhealthy, because she used her jaw to produce it, even if u try to say “well no she just used her jaw but she could do it without it”, the matter of the fact is she still used it, so eitherway its unhealthy, jaw vibrato isnt a good thing lol. Like i said, i still think technically, whitney had an edge on belting, however not by a landslide because mariah was an IMPECCABLE belter too.
@@angelxemotions9102 You right Mariah was a very great belter her placement was very great and her sound was very healthy and robust. She’s one of the best singer EVER even tho I still think that for Belting Whitney is the gold standard.

@@angelxemotions9102 I know lol I was just showing that even if I prefer Whitney I still can give Mariah her flowers. Nothing shady lol
The best female singers of all times ❤
Both are belting beasts ❤
Belting wise, Whitney is technically better, her belts are so huge even her G4’s are as big as her G5’s. She had the evenness throughout her belting range.
actually WH is not that great after F compared to when Mariah belted them in her Emotions Era Album. So Cold shows that. But yes, as a full chest belter, WH is the queen especially up to Eb and E. Vibrato, power, tone, color....all there. MC shines as someone who was more agile but never the better belter. Whitney is a belter who can do vocal gymnastics. Mariah is a vocal gymnast who can belt.
@@joelgarcia3907
Mariah never sustained her belts above E5 she just touches every note above there whilst Whitney sustained note above E5 with power, ease, and vibrato.
Yes, Whitney is better in the middle register, Mariah is better in the upper beltings.
@@ThekingOfMonsters1954
LOL. How in the world Mariah is better in upper belt when she can’t even sustain notes above E5 🤦
@@blackmamba3429 but not everything is about sustain, because mariah prefers to make notes of attacks, it is easier to reach this region
well these battles never make sense actually unless you here both voices attempting the same note for the same time under one roof. Some songs are stylistically made to have shorter sustained notes while others don't and some clips are just pure reverb from both. I've seen somebody compare their dry studio vocals and it made more sense honestly
I really will never get why people compare them. They are so different as vocalists. Both outstanding but with different styles, approaches and strengths.
For me:
Eb4-C#5 Whitney
D5-G5 Mariah
Whitney’s Eb5, E5, F5, F#5 and G5 laugh at you.
Whitney has better technique in her prime overall, but Mariah in her prime has the better tone overall imo. Still love them both so much
Technique wise Mariah was better! Mariah was supporting up to G5
I think Whitney has better tone and technique in her prime, but Mariah is definitely close in some songs.
Mariah had much more complex technique. Whitney was more of a church singer
@@Phoenix777-ku7ozin some songs… Whitney couldn’t even sing 5% of Mariah’s discog
@@ilovetati91 Are you saying that Church singers don’t have technique? I would say that Whitney was often more emotive in her dining because of her Church background but she still had excellent technique. What technique does Mariah use that Whitney didn’t use?
Mariah just has a very warm tone that I prefer. Her voice may not open up as much as Whitney’s when belting, but that tone is just so warm and imviting. Whitney’s is very exciting and sort of constantly punches you with its power. Both are phenomenal, but now I understand what Randy Jackson meant by Mariah having a buttery tone. It’s soft, yet heavy, and warm. It’s like warm smooth icing on a quadruple layer cake. Not sure how to describe it lol.
we said
A lot of people pefer Jonas Kaufmann over Mario del Monaco (dramatic tenors from different eras) for similar reasons: Kaufmann sounds buttery and lush, while del Monaco sounds brassy and thunderous. But that's largely because del Monaco had a much more developed voice, and thus had a strong ringing quality that Kaufmann, who's often criticized as unintelligible inside a theater due to the lack of engagement in his voice, just doesn't have.
Mariah in her prime had a developed chest voice, but Whitney's was so developed by the late 80s that many people think she was either a spinto soprano or a mezzo. The difference is clear when you listen to their closed vowels, particularly EE and OO. Prime Whitney's EE and OO sound just as piercing and potent as her EH and OH; Prime Mariah's EE and OO sometimes sound thinner or more tense than her open vowels.
Another criterion of development is the messa di voce: a crescendo immediately followed by a diminuendo, which tests your ability to maintain a balance of air pressures below and above the vocal folds and consistency of breath emission across a spectrum of volume/density levels. Whitney was superior to Mariah in this regard, especially in head voice.
@@foreighteen7797 and Kaufmann also has a strangled tone. VOCE NGOLATA..
Belting comparisons are not fair for them. Whitney built a career on sustained belts and head voice to crossover. So her works will show more sustained belts while Mariah's works was runs so she will show less sustained notes and more runs. Whitney is a natural belter who can do vocal gymnastics. Mariah is natural vocal gymnast who can belt. That is why Mariah cannot really compare here. She wanted to show agility. Also clips are professionally recorded here. Mariah's is not. Both amazing vocalists who may have similarities but are both incomparable singers. There will never be another of each of these women.
rubbish. Whitney ran more in head voice than anyone.,.
@@odumosuolusegun2781 the same runs? Her first 3 albums barley had it. Not that she couldn’t but in the 80s she was crossing over and runs were not as admired until she and others kept topping the charts. Compare her first two albums to Mariah’s and you will easily see Whitney was held back.
But sure, in the 90s she did runs. The same short runs over and over with amazing effect. She didn’t need them. But for sure she can run anyone under the table. She came from a church signing family. But runs were not her selling point. Her delivery. Her dynamics. That was all Whitney needed.
As for Mariah, singer know her works took more agility cuz she switch pitch and voice placement rapidly through her songs. You’d have to try and sing their songs to know that I guess.
@@joelgarcia3907 her albums didnt have it because of who her manager was💀 not you thinking studio vocals equates to what you do outside of the studio…..Whitney most definitely did runs on the live versions of her songs because shes what you call A LIVE VOCALIST…. that means singing the song differently each time and sounding better than the last without sounding worse or equal to the studio like mariah…..
@@joelgarcia3907 mariah and placement????? chile pls those two words dont go together…. Whitneys known for her placement not mariah next
@@joelgarcia3907 voice placement and agility. Are you okay.
In order for something to count you have to be able to at least hold the note. Mariah would start a note and switch up. That’s it agility that’s fleeing.
Did you say placement. Where she placing. She was all over the place. Whistle, low note, upper. Half the time Mariah couldn’t even catch her breath long enough to continue.

Two of my most favorite vocalist, Whitney just gives me chills. Both Queens
It’s so funny seeing the narratives change over the years lmao. Years ago it was ”Whitney adds too much chest on her high belts which causes her to strain” - now it’s “Whitney has a headier mix while Mariah maintains the same tone”.
Anyways - Whitney has the better belting technique.

Babyface collaborated with Whitney and Mariah separately on multiple occasions, and together for When You Believe. Like everyone who worked with them, he considers Whitney to have been the greatest. She was a natural; a prodigy. Mariah is VERY talented and skilled, but there’s a reason the pros hold Whitney in higher esteem. Maybe an age comparison would show it better?
Well randy jackson did not share the same opinion, neither did Maxwell. Around 98 Mariah had alot of issues with her voice and even Whitney stated this… soo lets not
Similar and close, but still easily noticeable that Whitney’s belts had more: clarity, power, soul, richness, resonance, vibrancy, life, etc….
If i close my eyes i could be listening Mariah, Whitney or Celine sometimes 😂
Whitney wins EASILY. Overall more consistent despite using a harder belting technique.
Very hard technique. Comparing a mouse to a lioness is not a good look
She doesn’t win easily but ok
Not even close to a harder technique. Mariah's was much more complex, more nuanced - Whitney was more of a church singer.
A harder belting technique?? she’s a headier mixer as she goes up unlike Mariah who uses a chest dominant mix. I would say Whitney had it easy
Harder? Lmao clear them ears out
whitney's voice lends itself to belting but technically they were more or less on par on this front. id say edge to mariah at her best days, although whitney was more consistent in terms of placement and support

@@marieljackman1850 Do not agree. Mariah’s phrased F#5s were literal perfection in every single sense whereas Whitney’s F5, F#5 and G5 in this video were pushed and even tense. That “heaviness” Whitney has to her belt or that “core” as you say when carried after a certain point becomes more harmful than technical.

And people say they are sopranos... Look at the weight below A4! Clearly Mezzos!
Disagree. Mariah doesn’t reach her mid belts until A4, everything below that was a low belt, which is typical for a high soprano. Whitney started to reach her mid belt a little earlier, at G4, but that’s because she’s a heavier soprano.
Whitneys a lyric soprano
Ok but weight doesn’t have to do anything with being higher or lower voice, you can easily lighten and thicken your voice
Both are high tesitura lyric sopranos.
Whitney is way better than mariah, Whitney sung in black churhes and was bless with s lovely voice.
Whitney is a bit too loud like Shirley Bassey. I prefer MC'S vocals. She doesn't scream.
Whitney prefers to sustain her notes while Mariahs musicality and vocal dynamics make her have less time to sustain notes. Even so she displays an amazing belting technique but less used than Whitney. It’s different ways of approaching music and both are amazing. Queen Mariah Carey can do as much and much better than what and how Miss Whitney does it. You all know why, because she avoid sounding like and singing the same way as Whitney does. She doesn't wanna be tagged as copy cat and she is not and never had been. She has continuously build her own style and identity. If she only wanted to of course she could but she is so wise and intelligent that's why she didn't and does not do it until now. And of course as an artist and as a Great Artist, they should know that they should build and stick to their own style and identity and of course they are also adviced to do so and Queen Mariah Carey know that and she does that also greatly because she respects other artists including Miss Whitney Houston. 🎤🎼❤️🙏😇 Advanced Merry Christmas To Everyone Around The World. ❄️⛄🎁🎄🙏

Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are the voices every female singer should look up towards. Both women are soulful and emotive. They rival each other in terms of technique. Both women have great control throughout their entire range, capable of singing low and high (especially Mariah). They have a great control in vocal dynamics, both being able to shift from pianissimo to fortissimo for artistic purposes (especially Whitney). While in their primes, they didn’t have any technical issues that would put one above another. The defining factor of each of these women comes from preference.
If you prefer silky, sultry, flexible, and colorful voices, Mariah Carey is for you. Mariah Carey’s mother was an opera singer. She trained Mariah from a young age until she was 12. Consequently, we can see it’s effects on Mariah’s voice, despite singing Soul/RnB, a different genre. Mariah Carey could be singing upper belts and transition down low, 3rd octave notes while singing in an even melisma. Mariah’s vocals could be compared to a piano, large range with ringing, resonant tones throughout. Her ability to transition between her chest register to her falsetto, to head, or even to whistle is unparalled. Her use of the whistle register is virtuosic and artistic, often performing 4th octave notes to improve her artistry.
On the other hand, if you prefer dynamic, powerful, and resonant vocals, Whitney is for you. Her gospel influenced vocals stretched her vocals, allowing her to perform complex melismas in different keys and rhythmic notations. Whitney’s head voice was extremely clear and had unparalled clarity. Her extreme vocal resonance was astounding. Her rendition of the American National Anthem showcases her ability to carry her belts into a high register while singing with proper technique. Whitney was also very consistent, often performing her songs better live than in the studio.
Legendary vocalists! Whitney's power and vibrato when belting is incredible! Likewise, I love Mariah's tonal quality and the way she's able to phrase belts back-to-back throughout her belting range!
I know that those are Free and Golden, but both of them are my Favorite and Idols, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have developed Chest Voice💙, There's Nothing to Discuss with it✨ and Yeah I can't choose, This is one of the diffucult vocal battle lol whaha,Love them both💙
I request for Celine vs. Sohyang belting
yess
Lol Celine is no match for Sohyang insane technique and power belting😅
Try Kelly Clarkson or Charice 😅
@@daviddaviddaviddaful Celine belts, Sohyang mixes, that's the differences
Mariah for me 💯
Why we've to choose one if we can have both of them
I am one of the hardcore lambs but Whitney will alway win belting. Just listen at how she can sustain up to high belts with vibrato and not running out of breath plus she had stamina, could go to 60+ nights for her concert tour and doing sustained high belts. Both are vocal titans👑
Both can sustain Mariah just finds it boring
@@o6279 But Whitney was obviously better imo. She could all the way up to G5 with weighty quality. Mariah barely did them for 1.5 seconds.
@@favesonly9077 Whitney’s had a heady quality and Mariah did in studio
Lmao creating a fake account just to uplift Whitney😭😭😭
Being a lamb doesn't make your statement valid, being knowledgeable musically and vocally is what matters here. Mariah is the better belter, overall because her technique is superior. Whitney takes the midbelts though, while Mariah easily takes the upperbelts
Mariah 👑was the best, she ate💯. Mariah voice is more versatile. She could do EVERYTHING Whitney could do vocally, But BUT Whitney "COULD NOTTT "do everything Mariah does, therefore Mariah is elite💯
Whitney’s belts sounded more solid because her mixed belts were usually more chest dominant. I enjoy both so much, but if I have to reeeeally pick one, I’d have to go with Mariah, just because she has a bit more variety to her belts.
Anytime you compare Whitney with anyone! It Whitney for me! No comparison.
As usual, here’s another video designed to make Mariah look vocally equivalent to Whitney 😂 Y’all can prefer whomever you prefer, and I’ve loved both for over 30yrs. Whitney is hands down a stronger & more skilled vocalist. What’s funny is Mariah will admit that, but her stans won’t 😂 Watch both of them LIVE. Best concerts: Mariah - Tokyo Dome ‘96; Whitney - Welcome Home Heroes 1991. If you watch those and conclude that Mariah is a better belter, you’re lying to yourself.
I think Mariah is better . I can prefer Mariah the same you prefer Whitney . In facts Mariah is more skilled and technique singer than Whitney . Yeah Mariah respects Whitney so what ?? Whitney also call Mariah a hella singer once .
@@kaingchhaylong2762Mariah not a more skilled singer than Whitney. Real vocal coaches will tell you that, especially when Whitney clearly had way better support and control of her voice.
Whitney of course!
Whitney all day, everyday
0:44 when was this?? Omg that vibrato
Whitney wins, without a doubt ❤
Is Whitney Houston the best vocalist in the world?
this too ruclips.net/video/b5yEsEZjW_I/видео.html
no lol. She just does mid belts. I barely hear her hit high notes
@@batch9518You just showed you don't know Whitney, Whitney got the whole package
Yes she is .
No, she's too basic and ordinary, so many other singers outsing her in her own songs or in same song they cover. she's not even in the top 5. Mariah Carey is the best vocalist in mainstream music.
Eb4 Whitney E4 Whitney F4 Tie F#4 Tie G4 Tie (Whitney sustained and Mariah had better vibrato) G#4 Whitney A4 Tie Bb4 Whitney B4 Mariah C5 Whitney (slightly pushed tho) C#5 Whitney D5 Tie Eb5 Tie E5 Tie F5 Whitney F#5 Tie G5 Tie (for me it's Mariah)
Some of Mariah's clips are not her best btw, every Whitney's notes here are golden!
Whitney has a lot of power in her voice, she can fill up the entire arena with her belting, but I prefer Mariah’s softer and more airy tone…one of the most soothing voices to listen to.
Both great and legendary singers but for me Whitney has an edge over MC. ❤
Belting wise Whitney Houston is superior
First of all these are nowhere near Mariah’s best vocals. Secondly Even when whitney had raw power I feel like her tone wasn’t always pleasant while Mariah sounds even brighter when she belts. I’ll say MARIAH
My Opinion:
Eb4 - Mariah
E4 - Whitney
F4 - Whitney

Yet she's the only singer people compare her to, says a lot about Mariah's talent and amazing skills...

Mariah’s ability to keep agility and tone throughout mid and upper belts it’s crazy…. But belting wise Whitney has an edge especially in terms of consistency. The fact that we got both of them at the same time is honestly such a rare feat and idk if we’ll ever have that level again 😭
They are better clips for Mariah, especially E5,C5,C#5,D5😢
Whitney sounds glorious in many areas until this part right here 3:31 😬..... Mariah eats the soaring upper belts.
Bro used the worst clips for mariah 😂😂
Worst clips? Please find some better that are actually live. Mariah is my favorite vocalist lol
@@CamdenEThere are much better clips though. Emotions 1993 for G4, 1995 Make it Happen in MSG for C#5, Underneath the Stars 1996 Rottendam for D5, If It’s Over 1992 Grammys for E5, I’ll be there acapella of Joy to the World 1994 for F5s,etc. The notes you picked for Mariah are not the worse but not the best either. It was a great video nonetheless.
@@Ryan_K535for G4, the one I picked was way more sustained and better vibrato than emotions, more power overall.
C#5, make it happen is so overused but that could have gone either way.
D5 underneath the stars is so short and even at Rotterdam it isn’t nearly as powerful as emotions
E5 for if it’s over that one could have worked but the one I picked is more rounded.
And F5, the JTTW one isn’t as ringing as ABMB
Glad you like the video but the first comment makes it seem like you’re trying to say I tried to set Mariah up for failure 😭
@@CamdenE That’s not what I was implying at all. I know Mariah is your favorite vocalist so that would not make sense. I know you don’t have any bad intentions, I was just stating what I thought some better notes would be. Hope I did not offend you!
@@CamdenEbro so what if MIH MSG C#5 is overused? It's so good. You're just finding an excuse to use mid clips from Mariah. I've seen so much better clips from Charmbracelet tour. Your choices are just bad. There are tons of resonant clips from different eras. You literally just chose from music box and daydream
2:55 CELINE????????
same thoughts hereee XDDD
i was saying!!! it doesn't sound like whit at all. maybe it's pitched up cuz no way. Maybe that's just how she actually sounds without the sound engineers adding echo and Resonance lol.
There's this one note from an old video comparison Celine does and it sounds exactly like Whitney
Whitney houston live in 1986 (I am changing)
