OOPS...I MAY OWE YOU AN APOLOGY HanShilmer, AS I PRESSED THOSE 3 DOTS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF YOUR COMMENT, TO FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS ABOUT, AND THE WORD "REPORT" FLASHED UP. WELL, I DIDN'T PRESS REPORT, SO HOPEFULLY THERE WILL BE NO CONSEQUENCES, BUT JUST IN CASE THERE ARE, YOU WILL KNOW WHO THE CULPRIT IS! SO, AS YOU'VE PROBABLY GUESSED, I'M NOT AU FAIT WITH THE INTERNET, THOUGH I AM A TRAINED COPY TYPIST, BUT AS I WILL BE 80 NEXT YEAR, I MISSED OUT ON PRESENT DAY TECHNOLOGY. OH, I HAD BETTER MENTION THAT I AM FROM THE UK, IN CASE THERE ARE REPERCUSSIONS

Hello, received oil paints as a surprise Xmas gift and decided to have go at the end of Feb. Two weeks in I found your channel and have tried to follow all your advice. By chance met a professional artist and asked if she would give me lessons. She visited my home and was very impressed with my tree paintings, wanted to know all about you and your teaching. She said she could only offer tips and to continue with what I’m doing. I will eventually find the drama to keep at it. I was speechless, a rare event, but wanted to pass on news of your success, and send my deep gratitude for all your hard work. Many many thanks Val

Stuart, I watch several artists on RUclips (I'm sure you won't resent that) and one I was watching earlier today was all about making precise brush strokes and NEVER mixing your paint on the board and following all these rules and really it just made me happy that you are here to tell us to take a chill pill and paint. Thank you for being you.

Hi, Stuart, unfortunately missed it yesterday but here am I, as always watching the whole "thing". - This has become a beautiful painting, detailed without real detail, the reddish glow in the background looks wonderful, and the clouds and trees / bushes let this painting look so alive. Thanks for part 3, I enjoyed every minute of it.

So, now I've been watching all three parts. The process of creating this painting through three videos was extremely exciting! Yes, watching and enjoying it is one side of the thing. On the other hand, we know that you have had to spend a lot of time to make it possible for all us. It is worthy high recognition. I still like the way you find and design tiny details, but also how you work with texture. Many many thanks!

  • @warptrax2627

just want to say thanks Stuart - I've recently started painting again, and I now have your laid-back voice in my head...with phrases like 'don't repeat' and 'illusion of detail' - it really helps me from veering into my old ways:) - I'm trying to 'find' my style - your approach is a massive influence - but obv its better if we all have our own ultimate versions - so I'm still exploring. I have an idea for you....how about a viewers gallery - like Tony Hart:) - you could feature pics and appraise them - might be an interesting angle (obv as you get to pick, then its not the same as a free tutorial). Anyway - if I'm ever in France again (have family there) I'd love to do a course at some point.

I had just spent a month in Scotland and the two Irelands in May of last year, I was so in love with the gorgeous landscapes and wondered how I would paint them when i got back to my studio. Chaulk it up to timing, seredipity or the gods smiling on me, within a few months of my homecoming I happened on Stuart's videos purely by accident and was amazed to dicover that he was teaching exactly what I needed, minus the koos of course.

This is my fav thing to wake up to. Ty Stuart😃.
I would guess that the number of oddballs w/ issues leaving inappropriate comments, compared to the number of subscribers & positive comments you receive, are minuscule? Didn’t know you could set filters. That’s rather handy!
And quiet is fine too. You have a way of making your viewers comfortable, like one is visiting w/ an old friend, & the moments of silence are just a natural part of it🙂.
I don’t mind hearing sounds of you moving around looking for things in the least. Imho, I say, save yourself the editing work.
I really really like that sky. I should like to have a go.

The reason I began watching your videos is the beauty of course but when I learned that you use panels not canvas, then I realized I can try oil. I didn't want to try it on canvas. Not artistically messy but just hard to handle the paintings or get a system set up to store them, too much having to stretch paintings on frames, too many technical doodah details other than painting. Very glad I came across your channel, not sure how long ago but it's been a while. Always inspiring.

    • @katherandefy

Oh and that about school being made unenjoyable is why I unschooled my kid who got high level comprehension on CAT (California achievement test) and great language mechanics and everything else is above average. His dad insisted on the unenjoyable stuff but the kid refused to do any of it so he ended up basically learning everything online from 4 years onward. But of course unschooling means children learn first and foremost from making their own decisions about what to learn. It doesn't mean unlearning. It just means no need for a template or box to fit learning into. The template is actually the brain. Don't need 12+ years of memorization and regurgitation. The greatest benefit? Children learn to make their own decisions in a safe environment but of course this is not for every parent who have mostly all been schooled out of the ability to make decisions or learn or even think since so many of us were trained and programmed to repeat what we hear. Big difference.

Enthralling, as usual Stuart. I have learned a lot over the years you've been posting these videos and I can't get enough of those skies! However, I do like to vary my landscapes a bit. Spring here in Cornwall provides me with a lot of colour beyond sap green and red ochre and I do like to add some evidence of human activity, even if it is just a distant church spire or tower, some hint of farm buildings, a smudge of smoke, a road or track. However, the focus is almost always in the sky! I love 'em!

Your paintings remind me of the song, "For the love of man " by Neil Young... "from the dusty road to the billowing sky let me wander there and let me wonder why".

Thank you so much for the lessons! You are very inspiring. I have a cat that looks like yours, some paint and brushes, and some big ole canvases so I'm psyched! Can you talk again about what board you use? I bought something from Home Depot this weekend and I have gesso but not sure I know what I'm doing.

Always enjoy your videos. Also enjoyed the joke, but thought your comment of throwing the brush across the room when things go wrong was more amusing. Perhaps because that is the one thing I likely can do equally as well. ;-)
Seriously, your tips have allowed me to improve my paintings tremendously. I'm very grateful.

I would love to know the song that plays as the video starts. Very relaxing and calming.

Thanks! So when I’m in my studio getting ready for a session I’ll play this to set the mood. When the mind is right, the body will follow.

DEAR STUART, I KNOW YOUR BRUSHES ARE VERY CHEAP BUT HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF SOAKING YOUR BRUSHES THAT HAVE GONE HARD WITH PAINT IN LINSEED AND CLOVERLEAF SEED OIL, TO LOOSEN THE PAINT AND SOFTEN THEM. IT WORKS. ALSO, YOU CAN LEAVE IT ON BRUSHES IN BETWEEN PAINTING SESSIONS AFTER WIPING OF THE EXCESS PAINT. MANY BLESSINGS, ANNETTE QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.
