Yet another good list. I did think, for sure; you would have included ANNIE CHRISTIAN from the CONTROVERSY album. Also AVALANCHE; which included the lyric "Abraham Lincoln was a racist."
One of my favorites is Black Muse from Hit n Run Phase 2 album. Its a rather hopeful track talking about all the things we as black culture have been through and how even with all that we are still going to make it through. My favorite lyrics are: Black Muse We gone make it through Surely people that created Rhythm and Blues Rock and Roll, and Jazz So you know we're built to last It's Cool.
I saw prince live perform Party Up! Man It was great!! I went to his concert at Flippers a roller skating rink in Hollywood with Muhammad Ali sister in law. I was hooked for life. Thanks 4 sharing!😃💕
Great list! While it confused me a bit when I first heard it years ago, Annie Christian was a bold statement about a variety of early 80s social ills, some still relevant today (gun control).
Yep family name is another song that I think it's so underrated and I totally agree it belongs on this list. It's probably my favorite one from the rainbow children.
I think U forgot one of greatest, powerful and personal political song... Dreamer from Lotus Flower album. There is his very precise and sincere ideologic song in my opinion... and WHAT a song!!! Thank U 4 your very special and faithful channel💜💜💜
Whenever I do lists I try to limit myself to one song per album. And in this case, Colonized Mind was even more political than Dreamer and off the same album. But yes Dreamer is amazing as well and definitely fits the bill
Understood! Colonized mind is central and definitive in Prince's artwork. And one of my favourite song of him ever. Of course had a choice 2 make....💜💜💜
I didn't know United States of Division. You went really in. Some songs I've never heard. Funny I picked up Chaos and Disorder didn't pay attention to that track on the album. Prince had a lot of opinions about America's politics. But he didn't vote because of his religion. That's what he said on Tavis Smiley. But I didn't pay attention to some of these wonderful gems. I've learned something new once again here. Baltimore was the right choice for number one. Love that track. His best one indeed. Thanks for sharing. Oh yeah his song America from Around The World In A Day,was also awesome. It didn't make the list. It's all good.
Nice list. But I'm shocked that "Sign 'O' the Times" or " Live for Love" wasn't on the list. I would've had one or both there but nice other than that.
Oh best believe if Prince was still alive 2020 he would stand up for us RIGHT NOW during all this racist shit going on. It makes no since, we ask nicely , we make songs , we try to move around it and its still here 2020. Just love people for who they are man it's crazy.
Nice compilation of Prince’s political side. Loved how you opened the video with that beautiful splash page. Prince’s Friend, You never fail to impress!!
We worked on Recording United States of Division during the Los Angeles Musicology sessions. That was a fav of mine and was glad when it finally came out a bit later
Thanks for this post. I was only familiar with a few of his political songs. My favorite is Dear Mr. Man because of the musical genre, the lyrics and swag in Prince's delivery. You are compelled to listen to this or watch him perform this because it is so good. I am happy that there are more dimensions to Prince then I originally knew. You should write a book. It would be different because I don't know if anyone is doing what you do.
Gold, Partyup, United States of Division, We March, Avalanche, Race, LADY CABDRIVER, and Controversey are some of the best political Prince songs. "When Will We Be Paid?" Is one I've definitely never heard and it's so good. Personally I think "Right the Wrong" is really cheesy. And I definitely agree with you on "Race," still a badass Prince hip hop crossover track from one of my favorite albums. And oh my god, I almost forgot, "Free Urself" is amazing and WELCOME 2 THE DAWN.
I only allow 1 song from any album on my top 10s, and Cinnamon Girl, I felt, was more directly and aggressively political, which is why I chose that one. DMM would have made it if I didn't have rules for these things. lol
I saw a comment where you said you tried to limit your countdown to one song per album, so in my opinion, Dear Mr. Man should've been the song from the Musicology album. I feel the message in that song is more powerful than Cinnamon Girl. Great list overall though. You should do a part 2 if you haven't already and cover songs like America, Annie Christian, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, etc.
I always considered Call My Name a slight protest song because of the lyrics "land of the free, somebody lied. They could bug my phone, peep around my home. They'd only see me and you making love inside." It's like he was trying warn people about the government invading people's privacy.
Totally! Since the politics wasn’t the focus I don’t think it would end up on a list but your are correct. It did make the top sexist song list though. Check that video out
Two corrections: The United States of Division was not from Xpectation. Xpectation was the instrumental album he released on New Year's Eve 2002. Division was a "digital B-side" from the Musicology album. Also, Prince didn't vote because he converted to the JW faith and they don't vote. That said, no list of most political songs would be complete without also including Sexuality, Ronnie Talk To Russia, Annie Christian, DMSR, Free, All the Critics Love U In New York, Let's Go Crazy, Paisley Park, America, Sign O' the Times, Dance On, The Future, New Power Generation, Elephants and Flowers and Live 4 Love. Also, both religious-themed albums (Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children) were also highly controversial for their political message.
Hello prince's friend. I just want to confirm if there are 2 legit channels releasing official music videos of prince or only 1? It seems that the other one isn't updating lately while there is a video of black sweat and other music videos of his later stuff are being released by another channel prince channel?

No complaints about any song on your list, but this list truly deserves to be 15 deep. I would definitely add dear mr. man, black muse, money don’t matter 2night, black mf in the house, and sign o the times. S.S.T, and days of wild deserve an honorable mention as well.
I don't know about anyone else, but I find myself wondering what he would have produced over the last two years in particular given the stressful political climate we are in. :(

My personal opinion. I think song America from around the world in a day album is one of my top favorite songs I think maybe you should have been on there or maybe I just see it a different way.
Considering the extent of the cold war in the early 80s, “Ronnie talk to Russia” from 1981’s Controversy has to be in the top 10, call perhaps even the top 5.
I have the opinion that some of the songs on the list are songs that Raise social awareness but in the stretch since of political awareness many of them fall short.
It’s good to have opinions and I invite your feedback. There’s a difference to me between social awareness “bad stuff is happening” and political awareness “bad stuff is happening and here is why.”
Please don’t misinterpret my comment. I am a supporter of your channel. I like what you’re doing. Like you, I am a lifelong prince fan with extensive knowledge of his catalog. I think you and I view social awareness and political awareness differently. Social aware songs are those that originate from the ordinary citizenry or songs directed to Society about society. Songs with political messaging originate from direct acts government or are Direct messages to government. Songs delivered to general society about societal issues are not political. They are social.
How could you leave off Sign O The Times? I’d think that everyone would agree it would be #1 and certainly higher than Baltimore. But then this is your fav list not mine ;-)
Missing Avalanche on this list. "Abraham Lincoln was a racist..." Is there anymore bold and political a lyrical for the United States of America, from a of child African descent? A child who, like all US kids, was taught Old Abe was the "Great Emancipator."
I don't think these are political songs, they are socially conscience songs. Which is different from politics. They are just his thought and opinions. Prince was very non-political.
Charlene James I fully agree with this comment. Many of the songs highlighted raise social awareness but are not strictly political. I get a separate comment that “Ronnie talk to Russia” from 1991 controversy album should absolutely be on the list. I think prince’s friend Missed the mark on this one.
I have a question... On Princes song Muse To The Pharaoh do you know what he was saying when he said the word Otan? Do you know who he was talking about there?
@@PrincesFriend :) Hi... I know who Prince was talking about there. In the context of the song a Pharaoh right? Prince had an attraction for years to Egypt so it makes sense to me at least why he would refer to a Pharaoh. Prince read up on ancient Egypt so he knew a whole lot about ancient Egypt. Prince was also a God fearing man of that there's no doubt. Now ancient Egypt had but one Pharaoh who broke with all other Egyptian Pharaohs and that was King Tuts Father the Pharaoh Akhenaten who was also married to Queen Nefertiti. Akenaten believed in only one God he threw out every other god which made him an enemy to his own people they pretty much desecrated his tomb after death and they tried to erase him from Egyptian history they even say that he may have been murdered. Prince always played a bit with words and letters of words and the word NATO there in that song he also spelled it backwards OTAN is a play of the Pharaoh Akenatens name the last 4 letters of his name aten. Even the song itself Prince speaks of God in there with scripture Proverbs 31:10 speaking of a good woman. And speaking of both the enemy, the devil, and of God with this line... And whether the enemy makes a run on the palace whether the enemy does not? The children will be laced with the protection Of the word of God, the opposite of NATO is OTAN.... And again Prince is talking about God those who are believers know that this is all scripture that the devil comes as an angel of light and that the Lord will come as a thief in the night to collect His Church... Get busy big baby, cause when the devil come Dem devil come dressed as light Maybe they gone fool the untrained mind But nobody I know gone bite Like a thief in the night my Lord come and strike Leave nothing but ashes to the left, dust to the right There's more there too like the displaced bloodline and all he was an exceptionally smart smart man he hid the word of God in his songs all the time. :) Peace.
Hi Princes Friend Just watched an interview with Tyka on Australian tv She is coming out here on the 29th of April with a nothing compares to you tribute concert with old band members Just wonder if you have heard about this and what you think about it
@@PrincesFriend Yeah, I get you but no 'Sign'? I was expecting it to be no.1 lol. I almost dropped my phone when you announced your number 1. But that's what I like about your channel.. you had songs on the listing wouldn't have considered.
+Keith Griffin Ah! See... that’s why we can’t trust those “unauthorized biographies.” I’d always heard Prince fell in love with that funky beat and offered Morris a band instead of cash as payment.
@@TS.W 💖 That's true. Prince bought the melody from Morris and did the other music and lyrics himself. Those lyrics alone have Prince all over it. As time passes stories get changed and exaggerated. And lies get treated like there the truth. For instant, Morris Day told a big lie in his bio! He said that Prince for his auditions with the record companies presented a tape that actually featured other musicians and not just him. Morris claimed it was to make him look like a one man band. But both Chris Moon and Prince's than manager Owen made it clear that wasn't true. Not to mention, none of those other people, including Morris were anywhere around during the time Prince and Owen were negotiating deals with the music industry. Owen even laughed at how ridiculous that lie was, because no record company was going to hire a teenage newcomer without first testing him out! Prince had to audition at every record company that wanted him and that was all of them. That tape was made with only Prince on it and according to Owen the actual tape is being preserved for musical history. I think out of jealousy people back than would make up things that weren't true as a way of sticking it to Prince. Now they're doing it for undeserved credit and profit. I actually don't believe Morris was the one to get that lie started. I think it was something being spread around. He heard it, and because he was angry at Prince and it was a negative thing he chose to believe that it was true. Before he put it in his book he really should have done some thorough research first. I don't mean talkin to the rumor mill that he hung around with, I was talking about communicating with Prince's manager Owen. He would know the truth about something like that. That is if Morris and the others actually want to know the truth or the truth to be known. I'm 100% sure that he never asked Prince if it was true and sense Prince was a private person I doubt he would have felt the need to answer a question that wasn't anyone's business to begin with.💖
Had to re post my comment as any response to you purple flower was deleted by the person of this channel if you want to talk to me go to my channel. Peace. I was wrong sorry Princes Friend.

Nice list! I would include Sexuality, The Same December, Family Name, Dreamer to my list
I too, thought FAMILY NAME would surely make the list. In fact, he could have just listed the entire RAINBOW CHILDREN album.
And that’s the thing about that. I limited myself to 1 song per album where I could.

Charlene James I fully agree with this comment. Many of the songs highlighted raise social awareness but are not strictly political. I get a separate comment that “Ronnie talk to Russia” from 1991 controversy album should absolutely be on the list. I think prince’s friend Missed the mark on this one.
Charlene James 1981 not 1991
I have a question... On Princes song Muse To The Pharaoh do you know what he was saying when he said the word Otan? Do you know who he was talking about there?
A bit but I can’t explain it very well. May have to bring in an expert when I get that review
Get busy big baby, cause when the devil come
Dem devil come dressed as light Maybe they gone fool the untrained mind But nobody I know gone bite
Like a thief in the night my Lord come and strike Leave nothing but ashes to the left, dust to the right
There's more there too like the displaced bloodline and all he was an exceptionally smart smart man he hid the word of God in his songs all the time. :) Peace.
I thought Planet earth would be number 1
Hi Princes Friend
Just watched an interview with Tyka on Australian tv
She is coming out here on the 29th of April with a nothing compares to you tribute concert with old band members
Just wonder if you have heard about this and what you think about it
Yep. I saw a commercial for it
What about America?
No 'Sign'? Unbelievable
It’s not a list of Prince’s most popular or well known political songs. It’s his best! :) but in fairness, signs was likely 11 or 12 on the list.
@@PrincesFriend Yeah, I get you but no 'Sign'? I was expecting it to be no.1 lol. I almost dropped my phone when you announced your number 1. But that's what I like about your channel.. you had songs on the listing wouldn't have considered.
SIGN IS DEFINITELY HES ADDRESSING SOME VERY VERY SERIOUS ISSUES...SIGN IS PRINCE'S VERSION OF MARVIN GAYES WHATS GOING ON...PERIOD
Right the Wrong proves Prince has no genre.
💯
Sign O the Times?
A few others have suggested this. Check my answer to them. :)
Sign Of The Times?
Ronnie Talk to Russia gets no honorable mention
Nope
@@PrincesFriend That's Coldblooded
😂
Didn't Morris Day write Partyup?
+Keith Griffin I think Morris did the beats and Prince the lyrics.
I think Morris says it in the Prince issue of Waxpoetics. Also Prince's Friend just said it in his "Why Prince Sucks #3 - He's Too Political" video.
I'm 100% sure that he never asked Prince if it was true and sense Prince was a private person I doubt he would have felt the need to answer a question that wasn't anyone's business to begin with.💖
Prince didn't write "Party up"
Had to re post my comment as any response to you purple flower was deleted by the person of this channel if you want to talk to me go to my channel. Peace. I was wrong sorry Princes Friend.
