One of his lyrics I love the best is I'd die 4 u: "I'm not a woman, I'm not a man, I'm st that you'll never understand" Wow, a few words to convey God and his open mind about gender when it wasn't fashionable. He was unique also as a writer. Greetings from Spain!!!
When I discovered Prince's work officially was back in 1981. I saw what he looked like from the "Dirty Mind" Album in the fall of 1980: I was to young to buy an album with a man in bikini briefs and leg warmers and a Flash Trench coat. Titles like "Head" didn't help each other. But, it still captivated me that album cover. Then I started seeing write ups and pictures from his concerts in Right On. Some young lady around me was calling his name. I wasn't aware of any movement on him. Then I heard "Controversy". That was blowing up New York radio. Then I heard Lets Work. That Funk was coming through. Then I heard Get It Up from The Time. I read the credits and saw the name Jamie Starr. I started to tie him to that act. Then Nasty Girl from Vanity 6 came out. So I figured out it was him behind the groups alias Jamie Starr. Then 1999 came out. One of the most integral albums in Pop Music History. It created the shift that would culminate to the brilliance of "Purple Rain". After that he be longed to all of America. The fun was over. It was Like the cat was out the bag on Prince and his genius. But, apart from listening to this. I don't how long Jason B. been listening to Prince. But, I figured all of this out about Prince by hearing his music. He didn't need to talk. His songs really said it all. I've heard interviews from others about who he was privately. My assumptions were mostly spot on. I miss him, but I'm happy that his legend has become prevalent. We are still communicating about him and his generous output of great music over the years and beyond. I did get a chance to see him Live,. I saw the Sign O Times concert in Europe back in 1987. The Bomb Concert, which he didn't tour in America . I was fortunate.
Prince understood women and wrote sexual content in a way that was playful and flirtatious, like an invitation. Come take a bath with Prince. He also turned the double-entendre on it's head, where the sexual meaning was upfront with a spiritual meaning oftentimes hidden. I love his early records where he talked about freedom and busting racial barriers, another invitation to join the party "uptown" with emphasis on "up". His way of turning phrases was very unique, and there was always a touch of humor. Great discussion.
Thank you for highlighting the first song of his career "For You" - that is a bold statement of a young artist, his vision was clear as a teenager. This song echoes "I Would Die 4 U". 4=April, U=21st letter of the alphabet. "I Would Die 4/21"
I’m going to start a petition a purple petition no better yet a peach and black canary yellow powder baby blue position, to remove all background voices of the Melvoins including Lisa from all a princess song who’s with me!?!?!

But with admiration.
