Studying Prince can be immensely insightful for any vocalist of any genre. Being a multi-instrumentalist, his vocal agility and taste draws from his instrumental phrasing.
But there's one thing that Prince does in every song and every performance... Something he does better than almost any other vocalist. If we hone in on this one thing with our own voices, it will completely change the way we sing!
It wouldn't make a lot of sense if I just told you... Let me show you!
Prince's support was great, if you check his life performances, specially in the 80s when he would be shirtless, his rib cage would expand soooo much and so quickly. He'd take really short and quick breaths and hold notes for a while.
"Stay in time w the drummer but dont forget to have fun you dont want it to be work " . -Prince . Thank you for your content .
2, 3 baby
I know life is much to drink, I was there.... (i like when they leave in his directions. It was as common before, but it is more common now... like in the opening of "Power Fantastic")
Prince, total genius. That word is over used. But not on prince. So much depth
Indeed
I totally agree. There's only been a handful of musical geniuses in the last 100 years. And of course Prince (RIP) is one of them. In my opinion there's only one left after Prince's death and as I speak going into 2025 that musical genius is Stevie Wonder.
Now there are a number of near musical genius, such as Ray Parker jr, Donald Fagen, Edgar Winter and Babyface to name a few or so. Oh, and I can't forget Rod Temperton (RIP)
Prince taught me how to sing without ever knowing it. It's led me to do a few Impersonation gigs as The Great Purple One. Such a talent. Now if I could only play guitar like him,,,
1:50 - Interesting you say that. What I hear of it is head voice / m2 brought to its upper limit (C6-F6, C#6 in this recording). Prince had a five-octave vocal range and his voice carried baritonality as much as it had soprano delicateness. His speaking voice was dark and gravelly and there are several instances where he sang in the lower second and even the upper first octave (the low refrain harmonies of “When Doves Cry”, for example, go down to E2, and he sings to C2 in “Trust”). His middle belts were husky and chested even though he also had those high chainsaw belts as well. He had some of a whistle register too (“God”). His recorded range, according to The Range Planet: A1-C7
There's a lot of odd things you can do with falsetto! For example I've quite a deep voice but can manipulate my falsetto up to g6 it's really all about practice.
@@9thlevel527 Indeed! And through that, you can also exploit laryngeal height and mix your voice to create a light chest-based voice (m1) and induce cord closure in order to pull the modal voice upward. It’s stunning how ductile the voice can be.
@@gillianomotoso328 my teacher describes what I do as "the fundamental pitch being more prominent than the first formant"
@@9thlevel527 So like, strongly resonant with overtones lacking in prominence?
@@gillianomotoso328 hm, I'll just upload a vid of it tm!
DO MORE PRINCE PLEEEEASE🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Have mercy. Honey that comes from the spirit within.
Can you please do more on Prince?
Thank you..this is one of the most interesting Prince related videos I've watched. Prince was so musically inclined..his music is like funky medicinal light.
Cool, finally a first Prince voice analysis video on your channel! He was so amazing and unique, I want to learn much more about his very versatile voice and singing so more Prince would be most welcome! Thank you
Your ability to analyze and then translate what you hear into info and tutoring that mere mortals like I am can grasp is part of the gift you are as a vocal coach Chris. Huge respect for you.
True story: I'm a wedding minister, and decades-long Prince fan (fam, as he liked to call us). To this day, I cannot begin a ceremony with "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today..." because I'll break into Let's Go Crazy, which while super cool, is probably not appropriate for weddings. Thanks for this video!
I love how you went in depth with this! It gives so much insight not just on his singing, but on what makes a great singer! It's basically the same thing we do on guitar when we air strum so that we keep in rhythm. It does something to your body and in singing I think it's a must to be present at all times with all the music around you.
YES!! Glad you enjoyed!
Yes! I've been waiting for this. Thank you
Prince was a BEAST with it! And so was Michael…R. I. P. guy’s! 💜💜💜
Idk how anyone could dislike your videos, you do such a great job and you’re very authentic
I do the rhythmic breathing in my singing all the time and sometimes i laughing or giggle in between singing 😂 its weird but fun
Would love to see a MJ vs Prince vocal comparison. Taking their all time most impressive vocal tracks. Both gods, would love to see it from the perspective of a vocal analyst like yourself!
I was wating for this one, I was listening to Purple rain live and I was amazed by the versatility.
Great analysis as always!
I highly recommend to anyone who's a fan of Prince's vocals to check out the tracks "Come" and "Solo" from the album "Come".
I really think that those are some of his smoothest and most impressive vocals. In the case of the track "Come", the vocals starting at the 9:00 minute mark are some of Prince's absolute best, in my opinion!
"International Lover" and "Soul Sanctuary" are also excellent examples of his vocal range and execution.
@@brianlord3098 I agree, those are great examples as well!
@@brianlord3098 Don’t forget “Crucial” and “Power Fantastic”.
Chris, this is so cool. Can't wait to see other Prince vids. And if one of them is gonna be covering his falsetto - that would be a dream come true for me!
Prince the greatest ever
I was just about to recommend you cover Prince but lo and behold, youve already done one!
Great video and inspiration from a rhythmic angle.
Nice, I'm exited for the next Prince video. I do a ton of funk singing and I totally think of my vocals as part of the rhythm section
Part 2, please!
Hi Chris. Prince has a song called ‘The Cross’ on Sign o’ the Times. The second part of the song has him singing with amazing emotion and really impressive grit for quite a sustained period... would love to see an analysis of that!
"The Beautiful Ones" and "The Love We Make" too
Believe it or not, singing along with Prince went a long way towards teaching me Metal screams. 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥
NICE
@ele5648 FACTS! 👍🏽😁
You can tell his is a Minnesotan, we have a cool accent.😊
I know I can my accent n every song he sings you know he grew up in a vast Multicultural world most people put them in a black artist realm he's not he is every culture and they don't know who his mother's father is I bet he was white that's my Approach the situation so let's just Embrace him as somebody that does not include race because we are all slaves in America are birth certificate is sold for collateral against the United States debt we are all slaves in America slavery didn't end they changed the name
All do respect! Prince is/was different. You cannot teach someone to sing like Prince. He knew and knows his voice capabilities...he was OFF THE CHAIN!!!!! He of course can sing but was blessed with his musical vocal scale, high low, mid, distorted, growls and so forth. HE JUST HAD IT!!! ALL NATURAL FOR HIM! Like you said backing from the mike etc...him adding effects to his voice...he was blessed and a genius...shit...PRINCE WAS CHOSEN...to emote feelings, sounds, direction etc....I'm just speaking about his voice, we won't even talk about his music....simply, if music in all totality and areas was a virus....PRINCE WAS INFECTED AND WOULD BE THE POSTER CHILD FOR MUSIC INFECTION DISEASE LOL!!!!! You can try and teach one to emote sounds expression etc. and plenty new old has this ability but Prince was soooo over the top, like he created new notes that are note in the books of learning to play notes or even sing notes. He mastered notes scales and all that. He was a BEAST!!!!! and a gift to us and music in all genres that "we" we think we know. He was a Prophet of music.
More Prince breakdowns please!
Hi Chris it's Twist. This is my music channel. I love the new intro. It is so much better. Thanks for the fix to you and your team because, now I don't have to turn down my stereo amp before your video starts.
Awesome stuff as allways in the video.
Toooo fun. Cheers brother.
Yes! Prince!
This new intro animation is *Dope*
I thk this is great ! Don't forget those pauses between how he does his grit high tones. Like how you mentioned his breath air and groove capabilities. Soooo on point chris thanx so much!
When you do more Prince, see if you can get anything off The Gold Experience. It's my favorite Prince album!
Cool! this song was recorded live with the band in an open warehouse... so they did have different inputs for each channel of the tape. (also in one of the lady's vocal track one of them laughs at something he did. But I can not hear it on the mix)
I was really looking for this. Amazing chris
I agree with what you are saying.. Helpful for sure!
Omg please do D'Angelo.. he has tht prince high note tones, Marvin Gaye gospel roars and angelic ranges.
I'd like to thank you and Ken Tamplin, between the 2 of you, I learned a great deal over these last 2 years, I finally got the courage to upload a cover of a couple of songs, I still have ways to go, but I'm finally getting confidence I haven't had before. I've learned far more from you, then I did Ken. Keep doing you man.
Thanks so much! I will!
This is AMAZING Chris! It reminds me of how my guitar teacher ingrained with strumming that even if I'm not playing notes, my hand is in the steady rhythm --- definitely a game changer for my playing and progress. I can't wait to play with this with my voice :)
Dude, i love that you did this! Rhythmic vocal styles are so overlooked/under appreciated! Prince was absolutely amazing With this, along with like everything else that has anything to do with music , in such a great person to study and learn from. Thank you for this! I would love to see you break down Tom Waits one of these days, his rhythmic style is so beyond unique as I'm sure you know! And I think you would be hard pressed to find someone further away from Prince on the spectrum of opposite's come I yet I think there are some similarities. Personally I've learned a lot from Tom Waits but would love to see your take away! Thanks again brother, as always I appreciate your positive energy and attitude. Stay safe and healthy🤘
I do a double intake of air in between phrases on beat I realized as you made me pay attention to it. You are so good at this.
At last! Thank you!
All your advice about the rhythmic approach is so true. Prince and Michael Jackson both masters of this singing style. If you listen to Michael Jackson’s isolated vocal tracks, he is all over it as well
Heeey Chris! Just what I've been waiting! Rhythm is really hard for me sometimes, especially with fast songs!
I'm doing a fun karaoke tomorrow and had to find an old prince sing that I love, that isn't over played and is still party atmosphere... So I'm doing 'when you were mine'! And I just wanted to get out of my normal style. Your 9 minute video made my voice sound so so different!!! And very fun for kareoke :-) I do sing and play guitar but I just love karaoke too!
Great work sir
Nice one Chris - interesting observations of a hero of mine and a good watch. Thank you. If you could teach us how he screams and screeches, then, you would definitely be King of all vocal coaches! By the way, "International Lover" (from "1999") and "Soul Sanctuary" (from "Emancipation") are excellent examples of his vocal range and execution. Cheers!
Thanks Brian, those screams are really overlooked and add so much to his sound. I become completely undone by those Prince screams.
Wonderful analysis
Hey Chris. Love your channel. Could you do an analysis and tutorial on how to achieve the vocal sound of prince that he´s doing going into the 3rd verse of purple rain? You know the sound he´s got on "honey I know I know times are. changing". Cant figure that one out for the life of me. Would love to see your approach!
I would love to see a video on "the godfather of soul" James Brown
Yes it was the same with Michael Jackson. Breathing... hum. ..hum...hum beetween singing. it brings moore Life. .. very good Tutorial. Excuse for my English. .because I am from France.
Frank from France !
WOW! So cool! I don't see myself as a very good vocalist, but you made me realize that I do this instinctively. The thing is it always feels so awkward since it wants to come out but I usually stifle it because I get so self-conscious. It's like I'm telling myself that it's just weird or that I'm just tryin to show off or something. But based on what you're saying, maybe it's actually me trying to feel the rhythm of the song? Anyway, maybe I feel self-conscious because I don't do it well or that I don't feel that I'm a great singer to begin with.
Nice! Yes, you can get away with a LOT if you got rhythm!! :)
@@bkinddokind6208 That makes a lot of sense. Having that confidence will take some work though... or maybe just reframing things in my mind. Hmmmm...
You should have picked a song where he sings just his head voice like do me baby, or rave un2 the joy fantastic to explore his full range... he has a 5 octave range but this is still a good video because people rarely talk about his voice
Oh there's more coming from Prince for sure!
@@chrisliepe is there more yet?
@@chrisliepe Please analyze this lesser known Prince song and all the vocal techniques he employs! ruclips.net/video/TonPhuVKOKQ/видео.html
Thanks Chris.
Great video as always chris!
I do a lot of similar things to stay in rhythm and in the key. They are also things that help set up the pitch and placement. Many are just things that came automatically while recording. I often cut them out of the mix. Maybe I'll consider keeping them in. Lol.
great stuff, man. I would like to watch an analysis of Lewis Capaldi. He has a peculiar tone, and very beautiful rasp in his high notes. And I would love to see your approach to that. Thanks for your videos Chris.
Thanks for the video! That preemptive singing reminds me of Michael Jackson or Chris Cornell. You did a video on Cornell where he does this a lot!
Hey Chris, I would love an episode about Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian, His technique is amazing and the way he harmonizes vocals and overdubs is fascinating, Ride into Obsession is worth a listen if you havent seen them before
Very good advice!
Great tips 👍
Great vid thank you! Would be amazing if youcould break down the vocal shout he does namely in purple rain ( honey I know I know I know times are changin) part...
« If you can define it it’s not funky » prince R.I.P.
do not think you can define analyze an encapsulate his art with words .
You should do Anthony Green from Circa Survive/Saoson
Brilliant
Damn wish you mentioned something about the scream at the end I really want to learn how to high scream can you do a part to listening to prince the beautiful ones “scream towards the end
I don't know if you take suggestions Chris, but a video on how to sound like Cedric Bixlar-Zavala from At The Drive In and The Mars Volta would be amazing.
Awesome work Chris! Please do MJ next! So much to unpack there.
Great thank U very much
Chugga chugga breathing Haha I've been doing that rhythmic stuff for years to drum tracks both just for fun while idling listening to music and also when my voice runs out cause it's really the only thing I can do to practice at that point haha
💜🕊
R&B singers got rhythm. Please do analysis of Oldie but goodie-- Janis Joplin and Tom Jones cardio-singing "Raise Your Hand"
I actually think Prince is a baritone and not a high tenor. He can have a really deep speaking voice and go really low on some songs. Also he tend to bridge early to his falsetto/headvoice, a trademark of him but I think it became his thing because he couldn't sustain high tenor notes in full voice but wanted to sing this high and smooth. I'm not sure tho, have to admit not an expert on this.
He said it hurts when he sings low.
@@kaybee4933 was before he took lessons, in the 90/2000 he sings low most of the time
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Prince is often, however for some reason, classified as a lyric baritone.
I always thought prince was a baritone with a very developed head and mixed voice
Maybe? He certainly has a well developed head and mix... that's for sure!
Same here, he rarely makes it above G4 in full voice, and around that range he gets quite screechy/screamy. His head voice range is just so strong and wide, he would often sing way lower in head voice than most singers, which is hard in itself to do
Yep, baritone🎯with an extraordinary crossing boundaries range💪🏽
@@RickerbyMusic he's definitely an inspiration to starter baritones like me
@@igorovtube 🔥🤘🏾🤘🏾
hi chris, im wondering what app youre using on that ipad for seeing the different camera angles
How tenor can have that kind low notes like Prince?. Im 100% positive that he is baritone. Another extreme example of baritone is Dimash.
How do you get these isolated vocals
RUclips search
Chris, great presentation however, I am curios about how you got just the vocals.I see you used Pro Tools for this. Is that what you used to separate the tracks? I've been looking for an app I can use to separate tracks to do exactly what you did. Study a song track by track.
I'd argue that the intro high "whistle" thing he does is actually an inhaled scream of sorts and not merely a high exhaled scream. Think James Brown or Springsteen. The pitch can get very high and raspy/rich if you push. Awesome video!
Where do you get isolated tracks?
How do you isolate the vocal track like that?? Seems like a great way to study.
Friends send them to me sometimes. Sometimes, like this one... I just found on RUclips!
Can you give a advise for a beginner singer on microphones to use and I don’t mean a mic for podcasts and YouTubing only for singing you take with to gigs and practice with a band
Great idea. Also, try my free recording course if you haven't already. Go to www.mymusicalvoice.com to find it!
How did you obtain the isolated tracks ?
RUclips
@@chrisliepe Thank you.
Prince is not a tenor he s a high baritone
2:26 Mario, is it you?
Chris, could you please do Lewis Capaldi?? :)
How’d you get his vocals 😱
RUclips :)
Earlyy !
I dont know a better human musical genius, vocals attitude high and low c o o l. The falsetto in not so obscure stuff like Adore is a testimony to the artistry. That type of stuff is beyond anything others did imo. His voice actually I think is not even the prettiest though, yet I think he's the smartest human being at music that we have heard yet. Unlikely any human will ever strike out at music that hard again.
So that music wise would make him prince.
Oops here i go again, falling in love all over.
He was a better poet than singer.
Ba Na Na nap....
Now do Frank Ocean, please!
melody needs harmony for context, but both are meaningless without rhythm/time/the beat. Prince is such a legend, those interstitial rhythm moments you pointed out sound like he's almost winding himself/his physiology up to get ready for the next thing he's going to sing.
Im a rhythmic singer
Sing like paolo nutini?
Place your fry extra high!
