Of all 3 of these mics, I've recorded the most with the DoubleMic. The signal is pretty hot so outdoors, the -5db pad is a must. It wasn't even on my radar until I got my Action 3 so it's been a really nice surprise!
Hey Isaac! While I love the VideoMic NTG, when I connect mine to the Action 3 via USBC to USBC, the gain knob becomes a volume control for 3.5mm headphone monitoring. The gain knob only affects the mic input when the NTG is connected via it's 3.5mm output (into a BOYA BY-K4 adapter). The Deity V-Mic D4 is different in that their gain knob works as intended when outputting USBC to USBC. If you don't mind using a mic adapter with the NTG to have gain control, the NTG sounds great on the Action 3. The only other downside is the mic length requires thoughtful mounting as it easily extends into the Action 3's FOV.
@@WayneRECs Right, thanks a lot for the detailed response! Really appreciate your videos! For the Action 3, I will probably stick with the VMGII for now. Thanks again!
I was not only amazed by the sound quality of these mics but also the preamp of the camera. This is the reason why I normally prefer mics like Deity D4, which has its own power supply. I've been doing a bunch of testing and am under the notion that the Action 3 doesn't have a preamp and that the "Gain" setting is a digital signal volume control. While I can't confirm this, I suspect the Action 3 does not have a ADC and relies on external devices to make that analog to digital conversion (which is done by mics with USBC outputs or a 3.5mm TRS to USBC mic adapter. This is why the Action 3 at a higher gain level sounds so clean. Because it's really just increasing the digital signal as opposed to amplifying the noise floor of an analog signal. I could be wrong on this, but this is the reason I chose mics that have some form of gain control built in. This is best exemplified by the lav issues motovloggers are having with the Action 3. With a TRS lav, the preamp is in the USBC 3.5mm adapter and is non adjustable. For an on camera mic, it's fine, but for a motovlogger lav, it's too hot and they clip at the mic capsule. But, the "fix" is that DJI implemented a -20db setting. But this only lowers the overall volume, not the mic's sensitivity. I guess long story short, the better the audio equipment used, the better signal going into the Action 3.

You will need a separate shock mount, but otherwise it's my go to mic for in front and behind the camera recording.
Hey there, great video. I was really excited to see some mics that plug in without adapters. I see that the first one is A Comica mic. I'm looking for a Lavalier mic for 'MotoVlogging' (If you don't know what that is, it is Vlogging from a moving motorcycle), which is challenging sound-wise. I think I've found a Comica mic that could work. It is a : Comica Audio SIG.LAV V05(UC) Omnidirectional USB-C Lavalier Microphone. It features: Super-Shield and Low Noise Mic: Gold-plated terminals, and a robust metal casing offer good shielding performance to reduce noise. Low-Cut Filter Function: Effectively filter the noise of low-frequency input to make the sound clearer. Real-Time Monitor: Check the audio status at any time while recording. Do you think this would work, plugged straight into the Action 3, or 4?? OH, another question is - I have a USBC mike that AKASO sells. I use it for MotoVlogging on my AKASO BRAVE6+. Any chance that could work plugged straight into DJI? I like the DJI cameras, but I'm not keen to buy one until I find a sound solution, that isn't a wireless mic, or something that needs an adapter. BEST REGARDS Campbell😁👍
Hey Campbell! Thanks for your comment! That Comica V05 UC lav mic looks like it would be a great option for motovlogging as the mic has it's own separate gain adjustment. I actually have a fair amount of moto folks who watch my videos and it's tough for me to recommend any specific lav as 1) I don't ride and 2) A lot depends on individual factors including the style of helmet, how loud your bike is, how fast you go etc. Additionally, I've learned that some motovloggers need/prefer wired lavs as they tend to record for extended periods of time (where a wireless solution's battery would die mid shoot) and that folks are looking for all kinds of solutions in all different budget ranges. My initial instinct for moto creation is to utilize a 32-bit floating point recorder to record all your audio separately. With the right mic technique, a 32-bit float recording would give the most dynamic range and would be able to accommodate loud engine sounds and your voice (with some potential post processing and subsequent syncing to your video). Unfortunately, this solution doesn't always fit budget wise or within any given content creators workflow. But, this question is always in the back of my mind so if I do come up with a moto solution or two, I'll be sure to make a video about it. In the meanwhile, I can tell you that your Akaso mic most likely will not work on the Action 3/4. It's my understanding that much like GoPro or Insta360, Akaso Brave cameras have their own proprietary way of handline USB-C audio and as such, any mic specifically designed to work with a Brave camera most likely will not work with any other brand. IMO, this is what makes the Action 2/3/4 so great audio wise. DJI basically "unlocked" audio functionality so users are not limited to proprietary dongles or mics. Unfortunately, this also created some confusion with compatibility...
Thanks so much Wayne. What a detailed response. Yeah, that Comica appealed for 3 reasons - It's cheap, it looked like it might have the USBC compatibility I was looking for, and I loved the gain adjustment and ability to monitor the sound. When I get a DJI camera, it sounds like it is worth a go. When I originally started looking at MotoVlogging the separate sound recorder seemed to be the most suggested option. I discounted it immediately due to cost, extra workflow, and what I assume will be another list of pitfalls. My Akaso is 90% there and is good up to 80kph (and only cost $15). Unfortunate that the video on it sux. As you say, you aren't an expert on MotoVlogging, so I just wanted to comment on one thing you said, which is a common misapprehension. A lot of people assume that one difficulty with recording sound on a motorcycle is overcoming engine noise. This is not true - Motorcycle engines/exhausts tend to produce less than 80db. At most road speeds, with a standard exhaust, a rider can only just hear exhaust noise - although it is louder when accelerating hard. The real issue is Wind-noise. At 100kph, wind noise reaches between 95db (inside a quiet streamlined helmet) and up to 115db+ (inside a noisy helmet). Adventure bike helmets are likely to be noisier (Due to the MX-style 'beak' on top, which creates a lot of turbulence). Add on an Action Camera and you are looking at even more turbulence. I often ride over 100kph (Where noise levels increase dramatically) and it is typical for people in America to regularly travel at 75mph (120kph)... The upshot is very high noise levels. Great content straight to the point. Question: Have you tried a USB C to USB C splitter adapter to be able to charge the unit while simultaneously adding an external MIC? If so, any positive results?
Thanks for your comment! While I haven't tried any splitters personally, in all my research it doesn't seem like a generic USBC Y cable will allow for both a mic input and charging simultaneously. That being said, DJI could engineer this kind of adapter (like they did for the Action 1) but I haven't heard anything of the sort yet.
I'm curious have you tried the DJI Mic at all? It would be the most expensive of the options but for using this camera with my work I'm think there will be many times where the camera will not be close enough for the mic to get the best audio. Thoughts?
While I don't own a set, I think the DJI Mic is probably the best prosumer 2.4GHz wireless solution in the current market. The issue for me personally, is that I don't like the possibility of interference or dropouts. With a system like the DJI Mic, I would most likely end up using the internal recorded audio on the transmitters instead of the audio sent from the receiver to the camera. As such, I personally wear a separate audio recorder AND record in-camera with one of these mics or even the built-in mics if I'm traveling light. But, that's just me. For other's who have different workflows and needs, the DJI Mic could be a great solution... (although I've heard rumors of a DJI Mic II in the works so that could have upgraded features and/or discount the original DJI Mic so it might be worth holding off for just a little bit...)
There are lots of USB-C lav mic options out there that will "work" with the Action 3 & 4 and they vary in price range. And while I can't test them all, it pretty much comes down to you get what you pay for. I personally have a Sennheiser XS Lav USB-C which I like the sound of on my voice both on my OA3 and OA4. It's reasonably priced at ~$60 USD and doesn't sound overly bass heavy. I'm in production of an Action 4 mic video where you'll get to hear samples, so keep an eye out for that soon.
Wayne I bought the comica VM10 PRO Universal Video Microphone but i am having a little problem trying to set the gain etc i work around loud agri kit any suggestions please?
Ha, I think the original VideoMicro has proven itself to be a reliable workhorse, but specifically with the Action 3, because it requires a ~$20 mic adapter and doesn't have it's own gain control, IMO the VM-10 Pro is a better option. But if someone already owns a VideoMicro, then picking up a BOYA adapter might be the way to go!
Awesome, thanks for the well explained and informative video! I do have a question regarding e.g. comica VM10 PRO, will it also be usable on for example a chest harness or shoulder strap (backpack); or does it overextend way too much to the back and cause depression in the angle?
Hey Calvin! Thanks for your comment! The VM10 PRO does extend far back enough to interfere when using a chest mount. A shoulder strap if high enough should be ok. The other issue is that if the mic is moved any farther forward, it will be visible in the shot.
hi tony, thanks for your video. there is one problem about the actione 3 with an external micphone. when i play the video back, i cannot hear anything if the external micphone is still connected with the camera. do you have the same issue? if so how did you fix it?

It's reasonably priced at ~$60 USD and doesn't sound overly bass heavy. I'm in production of an Action 4 mic video where you'll get to hear samples, so keep an eye out for that soon.

What right angle cable is that ?!
Wayne I bought the comica VM10 PRO Universal Video Microphone but i am having a little problem trying to set the gain etc i work around loud agri kit any suggestions please?
Any mic setup for Mounting on Helmet?
Wait....what about the famous Rode Video micro with the BOYA (3.5mm to USC C) as an "external mic"?
@@WayneRECs Hey Wayne, thanks for your reply! Ah, I see, that's a very good point, sharp! I'm loving your video's a lot, wish you the best!
hi tony, thanks for your video. there is one problem about the actione 3 with an external micphone. when i play the video back, i cannot hear anything if the external micphone is still connected with the camera. do you have the same issue? if so how did you fix it?
Hi , I have a question . i bought the dji Osmo Action 3 and im gonna vlog on motorcycle so do you any mic suggestion for helmet and with or without adapter?

apparently with the latest software update you don't need to use the DJI receiver, the camera will see the mics without it.
The first sounds good and don’t need to buy extra usb c type
All great options. and even without snow it still looks super cold outside. LOL
I've enjoyed using all 3 of these mics (and when you don't have hair, it's always cold outside lol)
@@WayneRECs I know that hairless pain all too well... we just can't win... in the tropics I have to wear a hat all the time to protect my bald head from the sun, despite it being crazy hot... we just can't win.
