In this video, I demonstrate The very delicate process of installing peel and stick wallpaper.
Peel and stick and stick wallpaper was originally never made to be a wallpaper. It was made for stickers and decals. Over time it became popular for people living in apartments, condos or temporary living situations because they could easily install and remove it. Unfortunately, speaking as an installer, peel and stick wallpaper (aka selfstick, temporary or self-adhesive wallpaper) is not as easy to install as advertised. In fact, because it's sticky on the back it presents its own sets of challenges that regular wallpaper doesn't have (mainly that you can slide the wallpaper into position).
    Tips
    1. Prepare walls. They must be smooth.
    2. Do not put it on textured walls, especially ones with orange peel.
    3. Do not take entire back plastic wrapping off (do it in stages)
    4. Get help and do not try to hang it alone. You need 2 people ideally.
    5. Use dry eraser instead of a typical smoother for MOST of the smoothing process so you don't damage wallpaper. This is very thin material.
    5. Have residential home hair blower (not a heat gun) for air bubbles at the end should they happen.
0:13 peel and stick not as easy as you think
1:12 problems with peel and stick wallpaper
1:53 make sure to remove any texture on wall (must be smooth)
3:37 do not take entire plastic off at first
5:07 do not use conventional wallpaper smoother (you might ruin it) use eraser instead
6:32 start hanging with one person on one end and the other one holding other end and pulling plastic down
    7:31 positing wallpaper
8:53 smoothing wallpaper as you're hanging it
9:10 double check plastic doesn't get stuck as you're smoothing paper
14:00 explanation of why you don't fully remove plastic at first
14:38 make sure to go from left to right to force air bubbles out (or right to left)

You can use a 'chip clip' as a weight to hold the backing down as you peel it. The clip is heavy enough to fight static but won't let it spring back up and get in the way.

Was thinking a piece of 1 1/2"x1/4" wood slat cut a little longer than the sheet width might help in keeping the unstuck sections of paper off the wall and help in securing it evenly using the eraser.

Hey Spencer I just watched your tutorial on self adhesive wallpaper last night because believe it or not I had to apply this horrendous material to a chimney breast today! You were lucky dude just putting it on a flat wall,I had to turn 2 external corners with the damn stuff. Mine was a normal wallpaper width but yours looked somewhat wider?. Great advice about the backing removal technique it worked a treat. Also I used a soft rubber spatula to apply it and think I got away with it. I had to wrap around the corners only slightly because the angles were miles off plumb, then had to slightly overlap the next piece but the end result wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. All I can say is “never again” Take care dude.

Spencer wow! Wish I’d known about this method yesterday. It seems so obvious now to use my ready mixed adhesive with this type of paper. The brand I used actually said on the instructions that you must overlap each piece by 0.5mm because over time it s possible that the self adhesive could be compromised and would shrink, therefore creating a gap in the joints. So I did this but must say wasn’t happy because it had a matching pattern! The customer thought it looked great but I came away disappointed and felt guilty taking my fee. If I came across this again I probably would give your method a go and let you know how it went but won’t lose any sleep if I don’t haha. Cheers dude take care out there.

Fantastic!! I am thinking of purchasing peel & stick wallpaper but to have a professional install it. However, my walls are standard wallboard that has matte finish paint that was applied with a roller 25 years ago. Does this mean that I cannot use peel & stick without refinishing my walls first? If so, the gorgeous wallpaper I wanted from Germany may be too much trouble.

  • @michaelwesthead-sportsinst4279

It's very similar to working with vinyl and transfer paper. I'm not sure if this technique will help with this but it's helpful to tape the top with painter's tape and creating a hinge to peel the plastic out from behind.

Hi, thanks for your video. I’m trying to re purpose a shelving system to use out doors in my backyard. Besides paint, I’m using vinyl wallpaper, peel and stick, for the sides and back of the shelving system. The wood is some sort particle board. What should I use to seal it, and protect it from the Florida sun and rain? Will sealers adhere to the vinyl? Should I use a water based polyurethane first over the paint to seal the wood, and then apply the vinyl wallpaper? Will the wallpaper stick to the sealer? I also would rather have a matte finish, but don’t even know if any of this is possible. This is my first project.....so I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Seal the wood with BIN feom zinsser. The vinyl won’t stand up to the expansion and contraction of outdoor use.

I have been applying wall covering for quite a few years, still not a fan of this peel-n-stick stuff. Did a small above the chair rail mural a few weeks ago, came out pretty good. I have a small kids bathroom to do next week with peel-n-stick, not looking forward to it. I think my OCD for perfection is going to be out of control. Thank you for the great tip with the dry erase applicator,,,,never thought of that.

Hi there Spencer! I'm hooked on your videos. Thank you for them. I've purchased peel-n-stick, simply because I love the design, but it's not available any other way. It will be installed on a wall very much like on this video. My question... I'd like it to be more permanent. I've sanded and primed the wall. Should I pretreat the wall with Gardz, or maybe even should I use a weldbond/water mixture? Any suggestions? Thank you so much. Debra

      Mam. Thank you for watching.
Smooth your walls. Then use gardz after smoothing. Let dry overnight. Then guess what. Using clamps on a table, pull wax backing off of your peel n stick and using a roller, apply clear heavy duty paste. Yes. Paste! A thin layer making sure you cover every square inch.
      Thanks for watching!

Spencer could you please tell me more about wall prep. Is it better to use satin or semi gloss behind peel and stick Mural? Can I use a special product, wall paste on the wall instead of repainting the wall that will help the Mural stick better? I am installing a Mural on a wall in our church that is @ 8 ' x 12'. Areas of the wall will be repaired and plastered first. If we can put a wall preparation product over the repaired wall instead of paint that would save time and money. If you have a product to recommend please let me know what it is.

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  2 месяца назад

OK, my friend! Now you are in advanced Peel and stick wallpaper procedures… Go to your local store and get a clear, strippable, heavy duty, Wallpaper paste. And then, with the help of another person, using a table, clamping down the peel and stick product - after you get the backing off of the top part, clamp down the peel and stick, and then with a paint roller, with a small amount of paste on the roller, Begin rolling your paste pulling it in one direction on the peel and stick… It is essential that you do not use lots of glue… A thin layer will suffice… Then get yourself a transparent plastic paint edger Harbor Freight, make sure it has no scratches on it that will scratch your peel and stick, And, going in one direction, starting at least 15 inches from the top, with two hands, putting gentle pressure on the peel and stick product, push against the wall and pull straight down, feathering out the paste underneath, but, only after you have sprayed a layer of water on the product before you pull the paint edger against the peel and stick… This will avoid scratch the product
You will then learn your success and failure as you pull your… You will learn if you used too much paste because it will be oozing out of the bottom and the edge of your peeling stick, you will know if you have scratches on your paint edger because it will scratch your peel and stick if you were not careful; but you will have great success if you do it well another thing, straight down and do this the left side of the peel and stick, the middle, and the right making sure that you begin this process in the middle column and then on either side, and you will have a perfectly installed product

Spencer, do you have any experience with this product being used in extreme heat? Thinking about our RV but also thinking the heat in the RV while stored may effect the adhesive? Thanks

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  3 года назад +1

I would not be concerned with extreme heat. But what I would do in that situation anyway yes to go to the paint store and get a mold inhibitor that is used for pain, then I would get 1 gallon of Roman 880 paste, and paste the wall in your RV with the mold inhibitor mixed into the paste and then I would hang my peel and stick over the wet Paste after removing the backing from the Peel and stick 875 stop and then I would enjoy my Peel and stick Product.

I just partially finished wallpapering a small foyer wall with this stuff. My walls are plaster and not until I opened the instructions did I see that it's not for plaster walls. sigh. It's small enough so I can 'fix' it without too much headache, but I am definitely going back to wallpaper and paste! Old school is best.

Nothing against Spencer, but this video was made five years ago and I do believe that in my extensive research for wall murals both peel and stick and must use wallpaper paste types of murals that things have come a long way. Like anything really you get what you pay for, so going on Amazon and finding the least expensive scene, or mural that you think you could live with is NOT the way to go unless you want to be disappointed or worse are not able to get it on the wall and have it look good and more importantly STAY on the wall! I used to do wallpapering years ago, with the traditional rolls that had to be pasted and also the walls had to be prepared well to get a good result. I always had a plumb ball with me as there is not such thing as perfectly plumb walls or perfect corners. Nowadays people use the laser tools to establish level and plumb so you know where to hang the first piece. I have looked at a large number of places online that sell wall murals and wallpaper, some are peel and stick or you have the option to choose to get the type that you use paste with. The backing that is on peel and stick that is the easiest to deal with is not this celephane type stuff he is using that gets all full of static. Good sellers have much better backing that is not a problem to work with and it is in the instructions to pull the backing down about 12" and then fold and score it out of the way. then once you have the top of the panel or roll in the right spot and have smoothed it down being sure to get all the air bubbles out, you can just reach around both sides at once (without a helper) or each of you pull the back down in approximately 12" at a time repeating the smoothing and so on. I was getting a rash watching how painfully and tedious this was!!! I would NOT by a product like he is using and I am assuming because of the age of this post that stuff like this is not made anymore for obvious reasons. One company that has a good reputation with a lot of DIY people on U tube and even designers is Wallism. they have a great selection of murals in all kinds of sizes and I think they will also custom size if that is what you want and need. They seem to back their product and offer lots of information about installation from preparing the surfaces to be covered, to keeping your delivery of product in the home or room for several days before installing similar to what you do with laminate flooring. Also, if you live in a home that is older or doesn't have the best craftsmenship you might as well plan on "framing" your mural because where your walls meet the ceiling or the corners are not going to be perfect. If you use a square you can find out if your corners are ok, you can use a level along the top where the wall meets the ceiling to see if the joinery is level, you can use an old fashioned plum line or go out and get a laser tool. You should watch as many tutorials as possible and get all the instructions you can from the business you bought from and do the prep work as boring as that may be, or else you will be at wits end and maybe even very disappointed, and worse maybe tear it all down your so upset! DIY is good but one MUST do the research and I say start off with something small before you go for a big job. I am 71 , I bought a lovely mural from Wallism and it is big, 15,5 feet wide and 9 ft in length. The back was great, the material of the mural itself was strong and because I did all the work first to determine plumb, level and surface quality, I hung it all by myself no helper and I did half one day, and the other half the next day and lived to tell about it and it is simply gorgeous and worth the $500.00 plus I paid for it on sale and the tools etc needed to do the work right and safely, safely I am referring to a new and very robust step ladder. Good luck , just remember that you get what you pay for and to DIY you need to know what your getting into.
