- The final combat that Ta-152 participated in took place on the Eastern Front against Soviet fighters. In late April 1945, the 'Front' was now reaching outskirts of Berlin. JG.301 was sending as many aircraft as it possibly could against the Red Army and Ta-152s were escorting other fighters in their ground attacks. The first battle went relatively well and Josef 'Jupp' Keil added some victories to his tally, becoming the top Ta-152 pilot. Willi Reschke also confronted the Soviet fighters but also witnesses a mysterious demise of his flight leader.

Even on the ropes the Luftwaffe still had a lot of courage to keep going up and fighting. It's hard to imagine the chaos at the time, the emotions of the pilots thinking of their loved ones as the Soviets and other allied nations bore down on them. Great video Showtime, very interesting series.
I'm glad you appreciate the content! It does seem unusual how Germans believed that their total defeat could somehow be avoided, even in the final days.
It was a mixture of fanaticism, fatalism, fear of the soviets, fear of being executed by their own side for defeatism, hopelessness, duty, and sheer bloody mindedness. It varied from man to man.

@@showtime112 There are accounts of German servicemen openly stating that victory was lost, which I am guessing was obvious after D-Day for most by that time, but the other option was getting a German dose of reprimand. Once in the service, most Germans in WW2 fought until they were severely wounded or died, were captured, or the war ended. On the eastern front, it was also a different war, as the two combatants were not abiding by the Geneva convention due to the Soviets not being willing to afford the Germans those terms. This led to them pretty much enjoying the killing of each other.

@@mikemulligan5731Part 82 of Geneva convention forces the signees to fulfil the convention against any enemy, not against signees only.
It was the German side that was mass-shooting thousands and thousands of civilians at the Eastern Front.

About Stahl missing, it s obvious that plane and body were not recovered because Westerhausen area is full of lakes, maybe inside in one of them.
During 50 years ,we have the same mystèry with St Exupery P38. Was discover in a deep narrow creek by divers .néar east of Marseille. Plane plummeted and hit water vertically.

@@MiG-31893 Around 65 Ta152H were built plus différents prototypes and 2 engines.
Thé kills in vidéo is only an old vintage black and white guncam created by computer to look liké a genuine guncam. Almost liké Hollywood movies😂

Excellent work on 3 part story of the Ta-152H in fact only one Ta-152 survived that is now at the National Air and Space museum in Suitland Maryland USA waiting for the restoration. Please do the story of RSAF hawker hunters shot down two Egyptian il-28s.

Eastern Front the Aircraft Combat German and Soviet was equal in the fighting, the Western Front the American, British, Allied fighters were the dominance of the German and Axis Air force by 1944-1945.
You say it wasn't any teal better than any allied fighter of the time,i have to agree they were all very much of a muchness, but just like the P-51 had an exeptional range and could escort the bombers that bit further to help deep penetration and distinguised the 51 for that ability,the Ta-152 was exeptional for high altitude work , a role it was conceived for but which never really matrialised, but a remarkable technical achievement none the less!

Good 2nd vid on the Ta-152. I learned that also Il-2 Sturmovik Great Battles plans to release the Ta-152 H1 as a collector plane in 2024. That one might be interesting to check out once released and playable. Apparently they have the Tempest and Yak-9 also. Good times for flight sim fans.

The issue of claims versus actual ‘kills’ is fascinating. An interesting rabbit hole to go down would be ‘who over claimed the most’. I’m pretty sure I know the answer although it isn’t for reason you’d think.
At the battle of britain the RAF shoot down double of all planes participadet on german side. The british RAF had also more planes than the Luftwaffe, but the most are bombers, recoplanes and so on. But the speach of Churchill from the few was simply not true.
@@klaus-peterborn1370 I think it was the Italians who over claimed the most. However, this isn’t for the reason most people think. They often over claimed to make it look like they were enthusiastically fighting when they actually had no real commitment. They would say they shot down a hurricane or Blenheim to keep the heat off them and not because they wanted to look like an ace pilot.
On the British side the RAF where prone to over claiming while the FAA often under claimed.

Ess gibt einen Bericht eines deutschen Testpiloten (in engl. Gefangenschft) der ein Vergleichsfliegen in England beschreibt. Darnach war die Ta allen (Spifire, Mustang, Tempest) haushoch überlegen, die Moskito hätte keine Chance gegen die 152 - Bildbericht in RUclips.
Yes,Many years ago a Luftwaffe pilot make a flight test with fw190 D-13, may bé with Ta152 , with Éric Brown RAF. Ta 152 and D13 were superior against Tempest on all situations.
Only Spitfire mk22 better but delivered end of war

Not that I'd feel sympathy for the German armed forces for the time, but it must be eerie flying out, waiting to see just how close the enemy is getting to your capital.
Good point. Yet they just kept on fighting. I was reading a book,about football of all things and a west German player talked about fighting in the war and how he fought until the last day and cried when Germany surrendered. Then he cried all over gain when the holocaust was revealed and he realised he’d been fighting for the ‘bad buys’ all that time. He seemed to suggest that this was a common feeling at the time.

The Dora would have performed well against the B-17's and landcaster's if enough were produced in number, but it came out too late in the war to make any noticeable difference except to the few pilots who managed to get in their way.

Excellent. History tells that we can never be certain how good this aircraft was. But in theory and with more time I believe it would have lived up to the over exaggerated hype it has always lived with. It’s beautiful, dangerous and of course incredibly engineered by the incredible minds of ww2 Germans. The technological contributions Germans made during that period in history lives on to this day
-According to Dietmar Hermann's book the first 200 Jumo 213E0 and Jumo 213F0 had faulty super charger shafts. Although the problems was fixed it clearly prevented the Ta 152H from achieving its potential by locking out 3rd and even 2nd gear. It almost certainly spared one Mosquito crew and its this flaw that prevented high altitude missions as well as cause some engine failures.
The Jumo 213F was essentially a Jumo 213E with the inter-cooler removed so that it would fit into the Fw 190D12 (an aircraft which could fly at 457mph)
The Jumo 213 EB was an improved Jumo 213E1 with a new cooling circuit and bigger valves that allowed the engine to be used with inter cooling in both the Ta 152H EB and Fw 1912 EB. With the Jumo 213EB the Fw 190D12 EB was expected to achieve 478mph and the Ta 152H EB 474mph but without the need to use GM-1 and a lower altitudes. Withg GM-1 who knows what the speed might have been.
-With the reliability issues in the engine gone the Ta 152H1 would have lived up to its reputation. The 2350 hp Jumo 213 EB almost ready for production and 2700hp Jumo 213J test benching the performance would have continued to grow. Jumo 213J was expected to reach 3200hp.
There is also the Ta 152C with the DB603L/LA engine which could respectively reach 2400 and 2250hp and the DB603N with 2800hp expected.
A variant of the Ta 152C with the BMW 801R had to be banded within the production plant for the 4 speed, two stage, inter cooled factory was damaged by bombing forcing the abandonment of the project.
The Fw 190D12/D13 EB was to continue in production. It was going to be equipped with internal wing fuel tanks, a TSA 2D toss bombing sight and 3 MG 213 revolver canons synchronized in the wing roots and firing through the hub. (60% of Ta 152 parts were common with Fw 190). The smaller wings of the Fw 190D allowing for higher speed flight at low altitude.
Even the Fw 190 had a possible planned life with the 2600hp BMW 801F engine and in the Fw 190A10 variant and enlarged wing to handle weight growth.

Rescke described the Yak-9 as "hopelessly inferior" to the Ta-152 .... hmmmm..... That Yak was a match in a dogfight for the 109 and the A series 190
The Ta152H is in a completely different league of performance to the regular 109 and any Anton series 190, so he wasn't wrong.
Most soviet fighters where really Bad, Even the other fighters like the la-7 where really poor in comparation with almost every German fighters at that moment. Sad but true, communists never had something good for that moment.
The thing is, like an awful lot of German kit, it was probably a better idea to have made more 109s. The TA’s had a lot of crashes because they had to rush a new plane with a lot of new jigs and machinery for manufacture etc without time to train the engineers and fitters and ground crew. The Germans never learned. I have a theory! It’s because of the influence of the prussians who were obsessed with duelling and hunting. Now, in both these activities good kit (swords, rifles,scopes, clothes etc) are very important to get an edge. They unfortunately took this attitude onto the world war with them. Hence all the new wonder weapons like the panther and the mg 42 which are great example of this problem. A lot of people have a Top Trumps game attitude to history. The reality is way different.
@@geordiedog1749 Most Prussians were farmers, small ones. Prussians were amongst the most liberal of Europeans, especially those from Berlin, in the form of tolerance and for instance of providing free compulsory education. Prussian never had any slavery, Prussia in fact cultivated the sugar beet from 0.6% sugar to 10% so didn't have slavery like France and Britain for sugar cane.
-Me 109 also had engine problems as they increased boost pressure to gain more horsepower. Everything was tough in 1944/45.
@@williamzk9083 “Prussia was hatched from a cannon ball” That’s very interesting, though. I think there must be two sides to Prussia. The influence of the Prussian military class on the military was certainly profound. That said the tendency of Nazi Germany to look for wonder weapons instead of what is best for them at the time is well documented. When things got ‘tough for example they made copies of the Sten gun. But only at the last minute. When you were in the position they found themselves in the correct military thing to do was to have gone with simple and effective.

TA-152 was a high altitude interceptor .... It excelled in thin air.
Had the Ta-152 been made sooner so they had time to work the bugs and quality issues out, I'm sure it would have been as good or better than the best the US and the UK had to offer AT THAT TIME. The US had some amazing piston aircraft in the pipeline at the end of the war.

The Ta-152 was designed as a high-altitude interceptor. At that time the Luftwaffe tried to avoid combat with Allied fighters and sought to destroy the enemy bombers that were causing high losses to German war production and fuel supplies. Therefore, I doubt the Ta-152 would have been effective at regaining air superiority over the Reich from Allied planes like the P-51D and the Spitfire Mk IX.
Probably not, they could be good interceptors but only if not opposed by too many enemy fighters

Yes, the mindset of German soldiers at the very end of the war is quite interesting. I suppose they were grasping at straws but it might be something else.

Many one says that the P-51(D), F4U, Griffon-Spitfires (Mk.XIV) and maybe Tempest were the best fighters of WWII. I think, if the "luck" would be on the Axis side, they would have better pilots after 43/44, more realible aircrafts (engines, etc), and in larger numbers, the late war German fighters (Bf-109K, Fw-190D, Ta-152), the late war Japanese fighters (Ki-84, Ki-100, N1J, J2M) and the "Italian trio" (G.55, C.205, Re.2005) would be equally good or even better than those Allied figthers. The Ta-152 with its long and narrow wings made it ideal for real high altitude fighting, it would shine there really. The rest is history.
As I understand it, at low altitude, the TA-152 was a bit of a dog. It was made for high altitude, where it performed well. But, just like the Me-262, too little, too late. By the time of the last month of the European war, very few German pilots with experience remained and fuel stocks were too low to support any kind of flight training program outside of actual combat sorties where the novice pilot learned by example from his mentor.
@@boydgrandy5769 Big aspect ration wings have the disadvantage of slowing the aircraft down due to drag in the thick air of low altitude, they reduce roll rate and may have dive speed issues. However they will give a tight turning circle at low altitude and the pilots were able to use this advantage.
I'd be highly suspicious with kill claims that basically only have the pilot claiming the kills as source. even with personal bias and national pride put aside: claiming more than double the numbers of the actual achieved victories seemed to be rather the norm than the accidental exeption. And again: that's putting personal bias and national pride aside....
Autobiographies are always questionable, at least to some extent. But often, we don't really have much more.

If War would have stretched n ended in 1946 TA 152 would have improved reliability speed n maneuverability issues but it was a decent fighter. Only issues were failure in engines n turns. Hello from India
