Excellent explanation, Russ! You've really nailed all the important points here! I will be recommending this to all my clients who need this setting up - saves me telling them how to do it!

Russ, Thank you for your video on syncing 2 ProTools rigs with ethernet connections.
I was doing 24 track analog tape archiving with baked tapes from over 40 years old. Everything had to be recorded in one pass and midi timecode with midi in/out was not working right. YOU SAVED THE DAY.
Also the offset in to correct the slippage worked like a charm. My offset for machine 2 was -945 samples in the Global Offset.
I am a subscriber and look forward to more of your videos.

    Hey Pro Tools Expert,
Awesome tutorial! How is your I/O set up between systems? Are you using two interfaces or just one? Also, could I have one midi controller controlling both PT systems at once?

How would you sync Maschine 1.8 (stand alone mode) to Pro Toos 11.3 using a Mac Book Pro 10.8.4?

Is there a way to do this over Wifi?
I'm mainly looking to remotely control the mix in pro tools and start/stop recordings, and playback as needed.
Our stage is a little far to go to and from the control room all the time.

Is it a must that when you run two macs to use the same software on both or could you use 2 different softwares? I have an older mac that won't run my current pro tools and was wondering. I am limited to PT 8.0.4. on the old one, but have to reboot in the older OS (My old mac can use the newer OS when rebooted, but doesn't have the architect to run the current P.T.) to use it. It's a lengthy amount of time that I don't want to spend. Thanks. Nice video.

Absolutely! The slave need to have 'Listen to MTC' activated, aswell as 'Sync' activated in the transport bar. Also you dont have to use ethernet, WIFI works aswell. Audio can be sent via Apple AUNetsend - AUNetRecieve if you wish, but it has a delay so might not be optimal.

What happens if one of the computers crashes while playing ? Does the other computer continue playing or does it stop ? ( I'm thinking of using this method to play backing tracks and have a synced copy playing on a muted track in my mixer, so if for some reason the mac crashes I can quickly raise the "copy" fader and finish the set )....

Thinking of live show, what happens if one computer fails? The 2nd keeps running? Do you need 2 Iloks and 2 audio interfaces? Thanks in advance

Hi, This works great when syncing LogicX and Nuendo, but not PT. Maybe I´m missing something, but at best my PT slave gets and loses sync rapidly or it won´t sync at all. Should I suspect avid has closed the door on this?

Can someone share if it's possible to connect a Mac to another just for the CPU power/usage? If so, are the steps the same as this? I cannot find this info on the net.

Is there a way to make the master system pass MTC during RWD/FF?
I want to use the satellite for video playback purposes, it would be great if it could send information during RWD/FF, and not just Play/Stop commands.

One other thing you may want to do: If you have SPDIF or Word Clock, you should sync the clocks to minimize clock drifting (even if you're not transferring audio over SPDIF). Just make either PT box sync to the SPDIF of the other. In my case, I have a house Word Clock generator that I make my MBOX2 PROs Sync to.

On the host - just open 'project settings' - 'synchronization' - 'MIDI' & select 'Transmit MTC' and 'Transmit MMC'

I am asking the same question because I am trying todo this but can only get the computers to sync but will not load Pro Tools on the second machine, it keeps asking for ilok, I hate it when people give instructions to do something like this but leave out the most important part, DO WE NEED 2ILOKS OR WHAT??

Hi - This is a great solution - i am using it since 6 months - a little funky sometimes to setup - but works really good. I am just having one little problem. I have MC Artist and MC Mix controllers attached as well and coupled the two computers with "synergy" - The Problem - like every 20-30 minutes or so - the systems are going into play/record by itself - with no user input. Anybody have experienced something similar - Cannot find the source of this BUG.
    Thanks Luigi

Nope - autosave would go nuts. Just copy the session and have an A/B copy of it.

  • @NeilHester

And then you could use a folder sync app to update the data from one to another.
Synctoy for Windows -dont know what a Mac equivalent would be.

You can do that with logic. You can sync Logic / Logic. Logic / PT. Logic Cubase etc.
