Great comparison - a joy to watch too. So many buyers of second hand Leafs in New Zealand. There are three in our street. Electric cars are such a joy to drive. We still have a "Clean Car Discount" on EVs in NZ. Being newly retired we were able to afford a base model Ioniq 5. Happy motoring and keep those great videos coming.

Love my 2021 Leaf e+ tekna. Love the chunky physical buttons and that the rear view mirror has a camera mode. 360 degree camera, one pedal driving mode. Always charge at home which is a big factor.

I would avoid Nissan Leaf, production started in 2010 and it hasn't changed much since, especially the lack of active cooling/heating of the battery will make the battery suffer

@@casperhansen826 for the 40kwh version maybe but for the 62kwh it's a non issue. the leaf is still one of the most reliable EVs on the market so I wouldn't be so quick to shoot it down.

@@casperhansen826 The lack of active cooling impacts the charging speed massively, but the degradation isn't really that much worse than with cars that have active cooling.
There's a Japanese YTer who has driven about 260000 km with his 2018 ZE1. His degradation is 20%. I watched a video featuring a M3 from 2019 with 280000 km.
The battery had lost 16% capacity. And several suspension components had been replaced in less than 4 years.
As a daily the Leaf works reasonably well.

Great topic for a video, we really need more EVs well under £30k
Worth noting that the MG4 SE Long Range is also under £30k and has an EV Database real world range of more than double the MINI and 80 miles more than the Leaf. The SE LR also charges 3x higher power than the Leaf and has CCS, not ChaDeSlo.
The MINI is also a much smaller car, it is a 2 door, so getting anyone into the back is a pain and the boot is tiny. As a family car the MG4 makes a lot more sense, if you have £30k to buy a tiny runabout, then fair enough
The MG4 also has RWD, 50:50 weight distribution and well sorted suspension, so there is plenty of driving enjoyment to be had too

  • @timrothwell33
    @timrothwell33 2 года назад +19

I guess manufacturers removed their cheaper/smaller battery EVs because not enough people were buying them. I wonder if, over time, that happens with the cheapest MG4. The MG4 is the clear winner in this test. The Mini is great but I don't understand why handling is so important if it's main role is "around town".

I think you'll find that prices started to spiral once the UK government scrapped the EV discount. Before that most manufacturers had at least one base model that came in under £35k. Now that they don't have to try and hit that figure, it's all gone mad. A Tesla isn't worth £45k+ just like an iPhone isn't worth £1k+. All these companies do is create "must have" products that foolish people need to own. But let's be honest, people aren't spending multiple thousands of their own money...... No, it's all about finance. This allows people to create the illusion of fake affluence whilst behind closed doors they are racking up large monthly debt.

My son needed a car in a hurry after he was swiped off his electric m/cycle. The MG works well both for his daily commute and also for weekend drive. A big bonus in the MG is the flat rear floor, making so much more space than in the LEAF.

The monthly payment is only part of the cost. How about giving an indication of the insurance group, especially as that can change with trim level, and efficiency in real world miles per kilowatt.
Tom's video alluded to the high price of Tesla insurance, so I'm sure that element of car "ownership" is crucial when deciding what we can afford.

Yes, thats our problem to, EV prices were already a lot higher than comparable ICE cars. Last two years they went completely out of reach.
There are so many small ICE cars even below £18.000, like:
The Hyundai i10, Mitsubishi Space Star, Dacia Sandero, Toyota Aygo, Fiat Panda, Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo X, Fiat 500, VW UP, Suzuki Ignis, Hyundai i20, Suzuki Swift, Citroen C3, Mazda 2
Opel Corsa, Dacia Duster, Toyota Yaris, Fiat 500C, Dacia Jogger, SEAT Ibiza, Renault Clio, Skoda Fabia, VW Polo. . . . to name a few.
An EV with a usable range of 200mls is hard to be found below £30k. So the masses will stay in their small cheaper ICE cars, as long as there are no EV's below £20.000.
And dont forget, you will have to pay a lot more rent every month, when you need to get a loan for a £20.000 than for a loan £30.000. That adds up to the difference between ICE and EV.

    • @farodopi5170

And the worst part is that city cars are actually disappearing on ICE versions as well.
No ford fiesta anymore VW polo will not be renewed etc.
So no way we are going to have EV version of a vehicle that doesn’t even have a ICE version anymore.
The small EV cars we have now are all over 30K

Have to admit I winced a bit at the quoted PCP prices, I've had a Leaf Acenta now for almost 14 months but on a 3 year lease, I paid £2100 upfront and my monthly payment is £224 admittedly for 6000 miles a year rather than 10,000, I know I got in just before interest rates went crazy but at current prices I couldn't afford the same again at the lease end, much as I love EV driving and doing my bit for the environment economic pressure could mean returning to an ICE car next time.

I'd rather an electric car had more flexible spec that had intuitive but simple user controls. Even analogue! Like the Citroën C-Zero Mitsubishi i-MiEV!

The longest single round-trip journey I did in the last 3 years (pandemic era) was 110 miles to Stansted airport and back. The idea that people still have range anxiety is false. The primary reason that people stay away from EVs is price. I have an MG4 on order for May delivery and I paid £26,995 for it "on PCP of course". By the time I allow for cheaper electricity running costs and maintenance costs, it will actually only cost me around £50 per month more than my current costs. This is based on the fact that my current car is paid for so any new car was going to introduce finance that isn't there at the moment. So a brand new EV that'll do an average of 150 miles on a single charge for around £50 per month was a no brainer for me.

I do agree that not just the UK need to change their minds on infrastructure and add incentives. Because South Africa has the Mini Cooper SE which is luxury car prices, and not in the average Joe's salary capabilities. MG doesn't even feature. Ora is talking about bring the Funky Cat here, but still it would be almost twice the price of what Joe and Jane would be capable of spending on a car. So smaller batteries with the Mini's range would work, if the infrastructure could deal with it. 75 - 100 miles(120 - 160km) between stops would work out perfectly. As the cars would urge their driver's to subsequently take more frequent stops and could end up being more rested. I know people would say that they want to drive at least 200miles+, but it would most definitely help younger driver's stop and rest more, as if would make more arrogant older / experienced drivers take that chill pill and make life calm down to the pace that they could be going at.
I vote, you should become a party of contention for the greener energies.

I've heard this a lot recently but our Nissan Leaf 30kwh is now 7 year old and I haven't noticed a huge drop in range even though it has nearly always been charged to 100%. We recently lost the first of the 12 battery bars and still getting a range of about 110 miles range (in summer) after 50k miles. I have heard much worse from other people. You have to remember that EVs when they report they are at 100% they are not really - there is extra capacity which the car won't allow you to use in order to protect the battery life (same at the low end - so 0% is not really 0%). So, when I get my MG4-LR soon I won't be limiting my charging to 80% all the time.

How do you reach that conclusion?
Reliable? EVs have a far simpler drive-train with a fraction of the number of moving parts as a combustion car.
Cheaper? As they said in the video, the MG4 is cheaper than a Ford Focus. It's also less expensive than a VW Golf and a whole host of other family five door hatchbacks.
Cheaper? At standard tariff home charging the MG4 SE SR in this video is about half the cost per mile of a Diesel VW Golf and cheaper still if on an EV tariff.
Cheaper? My MG4 cost £87 for its first service, less than half that of most ICE cars. Basically, EVs don't require servicing as there's nothing much to do.
Holidays? The MG4 is as roomy and comfortable as any of the ICE competition and better than most; far quieter and more relaxing on long journeys. Journeys over 200 miles might take a little longer than in an ICE, but this doesn't equate to much more than a sensible strategy for comfort and safety in any car. I've driven compared journeys between Bridport in Dorset to Stirling in Scotland, a distance of over 450 miles, EV vs ICE. There was virtually no difference in journey times, but the MG was far more relaxing and pleasant.

@Electrifying, I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether or not you believe the current UK government is stifling the uptake of EVs in general. If you compare us to our supposed peer countries, EV adoption seems a lot more consumer-friendly and environmentally-focused abroad, trying to target that 2030(ish) EV goal. Whilst Scotland repeatedly tries to focus on green schemes etc, Westminster seem adamant we need to revert to oil and - inexplicably - even COAL again.
It’s my opinion that UK lobbying by the fossil giants has meant the UK has PURPOSELY stalled EV adoption to squeeze a little more out of petrol - lowering petrol costs by relative value whilst axing things like EV tax exemption, grants, and even allowing charge station providers to become the Wild West (with some fast chargers costing MORE than petrol equivalent now).
Am I being a mad conspiracy theorist, or am I just following the money to the grubby truth?
