The Porsche Cayman EV is Not The Car We Were Expecting. 2026/2027 718/983 Electric Cayman EV

- We got our first good look at the upcoming electric porsche Cayman this week and while many of us were expecting this car to an electrified 718, much in the same way that the new 911 GTS is a hybridized 992, from a close analyzation of the new images and some of the information leaked from porsche, it appears that the new cayman is going to be a completely clean sheet vehicle that will not share any components with the 718 cayman.
For starters, the car has been designed around a completely new EV specific modular chassis that Porsche designed with Audi that they're calling Premium Platform Electric architecture, so right off the bat the most significant component of the car is brand new and has completely different dimensions from the 718 platform.
At a glance, the exterior of the new cayman looks familiar, but a closer look tells us that all of the body pannels are new. Lets start by anaylizing the profile. First, ignore this 911 styled rear 3 quarter window here, it's fake and this car will have the more familiar cayman shaped window. Why porsche bothered to do this, I don't know, someone must have had too much time on their hands. The first thing that sticks out is just how much this car looks like the taycan. The elongated nose and taycan headlamp assemblies have us wondering if this will be more of a taycan coupe than a cayman. Housed in the front fascia are active aero shutters similar to what is found on the latest 911 GTS, but the setups are not quite the same as the 911 has 5 slats and the cayman appears to only have 3. Many people are wondering why they are there at all, since there is no radiator, internal combustion motor, or oil to keep cool. The only elements that will be getting hot will be the brakes and batteries, so maybe these openings are channeling cool air to those components, but it seems like a much more simple and much better looking solution could have been found for this.
And on a similar note, there's no real need to have intake openings in the rear quarter fenders since there is no internal combustion engine that needs air, and none of porsches other electric cars have intakes in the rear fenders, but from looking at the camouflaging in front of the rear wheels and on the doors, it looks like porsche is concealing a set of intakes. Posrsche most likely decided to keep the intakes in place to provide visual continuity with the last 3 generations of caymans, and these intakes will probably be utilized to cool the motor, battery and rear brakes.
Upfront we're also seeing much larger underbody fins
Another change that is evident from looking at the profile are the drastically different wheel sizes at the front and rear. And the wheels appear to be a new design that feature 10 spokes and aero lips. These new wheels will most likely be found on the production version of the Electric Cayman, so hopefully you like em.
And if we look reeally close at the front fascia we can see some camouflaging covering up GT4 style deflectors.
Lining up the new cayman with the old cayman also helps to expose additional differences. Looking at these cars together we can see that the latest cayman has a much longer wheelbase, and the rear end has been extended and the roofline is raked much farther back.
A front view gives us a better look at the taycan headlamps and active aero shutters, and we can also see how bulbous the rear wheel haunches are, which now blend directly into the roofline instead of bulging over the rear wheels - which I personally think was one of the caymans most beautiful attributes, especially with the first generation cayman.
Looking at the rear of the car we see another unique element - the one piece rear window and decklid with an integrated vertically aligned 3rd brake light. This component is most likely made out of something other than glass, like polycarbonate, to save weight and increase durability.
The rear taillights and fascia are the most heavily camouflaged parts of the prototype but we can see a set of completely redesigned tail lights and also outlets at the outer edges of the bumper, there are most likely large vents in the rear bumper to exhaust heat from the brakes and battery.
So from doing a deep dive analysis on the exterior of the new Cayman, I don't see one single component that looks to be carried over from the 718 cayman, but if you noticed anything let me know in the comments.
Now as far as the motor that will be powering the Cayman, all we have at the moment are rumors and speculation, and intelligent guesses, but according to car and driver and most everyone else, the first versions of the Cayman will be powered by a single motor mounted in the rear, and then eventually Porsche will release higher end trims that feature a second motor in the front.
I think they made a mistake on the 718. I'm thrilled to have a 2016 981 Cayman S 6-speed.
Can explain your first sentence a bit more?
I've got a base 981 Cayman that I've used as an everyday driver for over 4 years. I haven't made the jump either because of the wail of the flat-6. The 4-popper on the 718 was a big miscalculation and they made the 4.0 way too pricey. Now, the electric model looks like an ugly 911. I abused the 4.0 GTS on the Porsche Experience course. Excellent car, but just not enough of an upgrade to justify the cost. Dream car is the 2025 GT3 Touring, but just can't justify $250k on a vehicle. Guess I'll have the 981 for another 5 years ;-)
me too, bought a '16 6sp 981B base in Nov and have not looked back, wish i could have afforded an S but it was +$10K more but this is not my daily driver and second car in the summer. Did not want the 4banger despite having more power and torque, the base is pretty zippy and can wind it out. i think that a 6sp flat 6 will hold its value over the 718
Sad to watch the auto industry systematically destroy all that was good
$80 grand for an EV that will depreciate faster than a bad refrigerator?
I'm predicting that these cars will not sell.
Yes and the 718s will rise in value as a result
Probably do a Macan and keep both ICE and Ev production line’s going in parallel…bet each way! Lol
Agreed. I'm rooting for this as a longtime Cayman/Boxster fan but it's so hard to get excited for it.
I bet they will do pretty good. People with 911, Macan, Panameras etc. are still buying the Taycans and the Macan EV. Im confident that people will be buying the 718 as well due to the low centre of gravity, lots of power, better traction management, less brake wear (regen breaking) and low maintenance cost.
I'm predicting you are correct.
A 4000lb two seat sports car? DOA!
facts
Look at Taycans, EV caymans are going to suffer the same rejection and depreciation
Porsche should tell the EU to go jump!
Either that or move production out of Germany, F the EU 4ever!
Finally, the 1,8 ton Cayman we have all been waiting for.
I have never been less excited for a new Porsche (except maybe for the new Macan which itself looks like a dog's breakfast). Let's face it, we love Porsche because we love cutting edge engineering, not electronics...
Porsche has not compromised their engineering with their EVs in my opinion after owning a Taycan
agree
keeping my 718 CGTS 4.0 forever!
No thank you, I’m very happy my 2025 GTS 4.0 is being built as I type this.
GTS 4.0 is a great car, GT4 owner here, that 4.0 is a sweet motor. Enjoy it. This EV is going to be sweet though, no doubt about it.
Mine also - delivery late March early April - Good choice
My GTS 4.0 order also in. April build
Damn u got 💰 , i wish I had that 😅
I don’t envy you . I paid 155k for my 991.2 gt3. What’s your gts going to cost? $235,000?
Hope the release of the this car makes the value of my GT4 skyrocket!
Doesn’t matter to me, I’m never selling mine.
💯 🚀 📈
Sacrilege. It turns my stomach that Porsche is going electric. I will never buy an electric Porsche. Period.
Let this thing depreciate by 50% and it might be a deal as a commuter. I am dead set against EVs for my weekend fun car, but a daily could be ok. I will miss the sound, but I believe Porsche will go the ionic 5N and do fake sound. Yeah it may be a sacrilege but something tells me it could be fun. I’ll test drive one.
I thought Porsche went electric a long time ago…
I drive a Taycan as a daily and a 992 Turbo S as my guilty pleasure (5k miles/year). I’ve been anti-EV but Porsche has done it so well. Still feels like Porsche quality (opposite of a Tesla) and drives like one as well. Given the market, I think they will back off the heavy EV push, but give them a shot, it’s still a Porsche
There’s a lot of cosmetic camo going on with this example!
I prefer the gas cars but the Taycans aren't bad at all. I got mine heavily discounted cause the dealer couldn't sell 'em EVs.
Porsche lost the script that made them great a mid priced (between Ferrari and corvette lotus) great reliable engined car. Now they’re running towards EVs which depreciate and don’t sell in the US.
EU has been pushing that electric vehicle BS hard and Germany leads the bunch. Porsche has to try and push out these EVs so they can try to keep the 911 ICE as long as possible.
It is great to see a genuine next-generation 718. As long as they do not completely nerf the range, one of these will be our garage as soon as it is released in the US.
Looks like 911 Taycan cross
I heard they may be keeping an ICE option within the model line
🤞
They should, I ordered my wife a Macan GTS ICE version, that's on the boat right now. I have a 911 50. If Porsche goes all EV because of the EU, these may be in my garage until I leave this big blue ball.
Hideous, keeping my 3.4 L 2014 S. No thanks.
I just bought one. Just in time
They are trying to keep up with the torque and speed of electric cars-without any passion….as time goes forward we are seeing the demise of the true driver who wants an ICE engine with manual
I think Porsche must be crapping their pants thinking how this electric movement is going to kill the desirability of a lot of their cars.
@ there has been pushback by government changes all over the world from WOKE anti oil to realistic energy policy- I think the ICE engine will survive and the real drivers will still have a source of cars
This is just ugly. Should have kept my 2022 Cayman S
That front end 🤮
The Cayman used to be a "handling car" for a reasonable price, the electric version will be too expensive, too heavy and not deliver enough sound and emotions. I think they will bring back a facelift of the 982 and put a 6-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in it. Same problem with the electric Macan. CFO Lutz Meschke has already said: “We are examining the possibility of equipping some of the originally planned electric models with hybrid drives or combustion engines in the future.”
Thank goodness for 1.5 speed! There's enunciation, then there's this guy
It doesn't appear that Pinky Lai had any input on the body design. The timeless flowing lines of the 987.1 Cayman have been totally replaced. The front end shown at 1:01 is a styling abomination and appears out of proportion to the exaggerated rear fender haunches. Whether electric or gas, it's not something beautiful to behold.
I recently bought a 718 Spyder. Amazing fun car. I drive to work in a Tesla Y. I drove a couple Porsche EVs last time I was at the dealer. I just don’t get it. They don’t come close in tech to tesla. And if you love what Porsche is about as I have come to, the EV just doesn’t make sense. I don’t know the market well but I can’t imagine it being a very large customer base. I do wish I had a bunch of money and a large enough garage to house about 6 different gas powered Spyder/Caymen/911 variants.
A few comments:
These cars will go into production earlier, later this year - they have already been tested (as Boxster) for 2 years and are practically ready now.
The price and power will be at the level of the Macan EV, as it was in the past. The turbo version will have over 600 HP and less than 3 seconds to 100 km/h.
I had a 21 Cayman S 2.5T. That motor gets a lot of hate but it pulled hard, sounded great for a 4 pot and remains very reliable. It was a manual and I absolutely loved it. Sold it to invest in a rental property
Nice
All we can hope is that this one are going to look like a sportscar, not as futuristic standard EV look. 🎉🎉
I can’t wait to get one for a steal when it hits the used market
In Europe, this model will fortunately be 100% deductible for companies, which will be a huge advantage. It will also be the only full electric convertible. The dealership explained me that the battery is sitting vertically behind the seats, thus giving it a better driving balance. THis explains the longer wheelbase, with more space deidcated to batteries, between seats and rear axle
I fear they’ve become a company too obsessed with engineering solutions on response to complex legislation. They’ve forgotten to focus on building products that people want.
Also, this wont be called 718. That was a marketing exercise to link to 1950s racing history with 4cyl.
I am lucky that i just got my brand new 2025 gt4 RS thru allocation. It is the last few arriving in USA.
We don't need or even want a refurbished Taycan with a Cayman logo written on the back.
Is it getting an underfloor battery like you showed at the start of your video? Or was a big part of this car the fact it’s getting a mid mounted battery that will sit higher up behind the seats?
I didn't give too much thought to what would end my womanizing. I assumed it would be my aging and physical condition. As it turned out, it was the aging of women and their physical condition that ended my womanizing.
I have been a little bit of a car guy all my life. I am at a point in my life that I can spend 250k on a car. However, cars are rapidly becoming undesirable and I may not bother. I didn't expect that.
Funny how life works out.
"The Porsche Cayman EV is Not The Car We Were Expecting", i would say its not the car "we" want
I'm so excited for this! My next car for sure if they stick the landing
It depends on how many horsepower it will have and what the weight will be. If it gets a decent amount of horsepower, 500+, and a relatively light weight like the Cayman always get, along with good and familiar weight distribution, it could definitely make sense and be interesting.
However, if it only gets low horsepower and high weight to stay clearly below the 911, it will completely flop. In that case, you’d simply buy a Tesla Model 3 Performance with 500 HP and a relatively light weight of 1,700 kg if you’re looking for an electric sports car, and just add a sport suspension and brakes.
I knew Porsche had gone insanely woke when I noticed every issue of their user magazine had a story such as - 2 lesbians in LA having to decide which Porsche they drive to work - Macan vs Taycan. Every aspect of the magazine was soaked in leftist virtue signaling. Eventually I just threw the magazine in the garbage without even looking at it. It’s this mindset that is leading them down the road to bankruptcy. I’ve been buying Porsche since 1984. But now I’ve reached the point I can’t take it anymore. I guess it’s time for something else - maybe a GT63…
PORSCHE…. Just disappear (BACK) INTO THIN “AIR” Please….
It used to be that the sedan took its styling cues from the sports car to give it an extra level of sportiness. Now we have Porsche giving their new sports car styling cues from a sedan. Ugh. Painful to watch the Porsche demise.
These EV Cayman/Boxster's are going to be bombs. Macan EV's are showing that they just don't sell well. The stupidity here is astounding, take your biggest seller and make it something people simply DO NOT WANT, insane. My dealer told me that the Cayman/Boxster will exist in ICE versions for the foreseeable future. Who knows, will Porsche resurrect the GT4 and Spyder, non RS versions, I personally hope so. I have a 2017 Cayman S and a 2021 Macan GTS and Porsche goes all EV those will be my last Porsche.
First they took our hydraulic steering, then they made the heavier, next they took our flat 6, and now electric. What other product gets worse with each revision?
Still too camouflaged to tell but this might be the best looking Cayman yet. I personally love the 981 styling but don't like the 718.
If it has the Ioniq 5 N’s voo doo with selectable Porsche model exhaust sounds I’ll buy 5. If not, it will cripple them.
This. I think this needs to be a key feature in the new EV world.
Fake noise? A car that lies to you pretty much all the time? Ugh. EVs suck. I’m keeping my GTS 4.0. I may even order a second one.
@@arkachatterjee5179 Don't forget about the fake shifts ;)
Seriously, I don't care how fast it is. It's lame. It's ugly. It's a tank, and it won't have the range to do normal Saturday morning sports-cars things...
I recently saw a video on Porsche’s channel talking about the inception of the Mission E (Taycan) and they mention the “Boxster E.” It was posted 8 years ago. Apparently they’ve been working on this thing for a minute…
Driving my 981S Boxster into the ground. I would rather vote Democrat after I’m dead than drive a electric Porsche 🤣🤣🤣
This will sell like crazy in Chinese market which already is larger than US. There will be resistance in US market.
Im happy that my new 992.2 GT3 is coming 4 months from now 😃 nobody need this electric ⚡️ Porsche cars. My salesman told me already they are not selling
Great . World is changing. Porsche chances too.
It's so much uglier than the previous model, it is now as wide and long as an M2. What a shame.
I would not be worried that much about ev Cayman, especially after poor sales of Taycan and ev Macan. Lets be honest they're not that stupid... They are probably already working on a hybrid
This will be very damaging to the Porsche name. Is it even a Porsche without the sound 🤷🏽♂️
At this point of time, new cars are just complete downgrade & redundant
Sorry not for me, I will be keeping my 718 GTS
I've had a Boxster and just sold my Cayman S... I absolutely do not want the EV! ZERO interest.
Just like the last Porsche EV. Garbage
These will depreciate like the taycan
The electric 718 is getting canceled, they will come out with a new ICE 718
I will never ever buy an electric cayman. I have a 981 cayman s and plan on buying a 718 spyder. I believe this is a colossal mistake by Porsche.
fortunately i just got mine 4.0 last week
Love it. I’ll trade my Taycan CT 4s in for one in five years.
Perhaps the Cayman will be the 911 in the electric era and Porsche goes all in on power?
What a joke. Porsche is dead.
I do quite like it but it hasn’t got an engine, so…. No thanks
I think the biggest mistake Porsche has continued to make is to force the Cayman to be lesser than the 911. True sports cars are 2 seaters and Porsche is mostly competing with 2 seaters, yet they refuse to let the Cayman to come into it's own, with the exception of the very rare and hard to get RS models. I really hope that they see making the Cayman electric that it is no longer a "threat" to the 911, like the Taycan, and let it's trims go all the way up to Turbo GT also. Never been a fan of the 911, but I love my Cayman, just wish they would put a 911 Turbo engine in it!
I was hoping they will no follow this bullshit green deal. But it seems I was wrong. This will be a major flop. Mark my words. Btw. I'm planning to buy my first Porsche, 987 Boxster.
I know this electric Cayman has been developed for awhile now, it seeing how the electric market is crashing by the day. I wonder why they didn’t implement at least the hybrid system found in the GTS. I know emissions is a key issue, but looking at the Taycans staggering slide I sales should be a sign to hold on to ICE as long as possible to give Efuel at least a chance. This proabably gonna be a huge miss on Porsche part. Sad to see indeed.
EV Cayman 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
EV
I’m out.
Good Bye Porsche
1/2 price after first year
This car will surprise everyone. It will be a huge success… depending on the price.
U drive an Elmo Tesla now?? LoL
@ no. I drive a 992 and a 987.2. You?
I think so. My last 2 cars were electric, and I want another, but no one makes a real electric sports car yet (for under $200k). I love driving the BMW i4, but why spend $80k on a high performance car that looks like a Toyota Corolla??? This will be the only true electric sports car since the old Tesla Roadster and half the price of the new Tesla Roadster. I think it will make an awesome daily, add Spyder RS for fun weekend drives, and it's the perfect combination!
Doubt it. A massive flop in the making. Revisit this thread after launch.
@@andycole5957 precisely.
Porsche is not stupid, they know electric cars are not the answer, hybrid is the answer, put in an ice engine and add small electric motor and you got a low weight torque monster. Anything over 3200 lbs changes the feel of the car. Drive a 987 at 2900 lbs and you are so impressed with feel and balance. My 718 s Boxster is 3200 lbs and you can feel the extra weight but its still nimble. When I rent a car, I am so shocked at the lack of feel and pitch and roll when turning. The 987 feels like it defies gravity, you feel no pressure laterally on curves. This unwanted electric experiment should not be built. Porsche will not release it, this is why they keep pushing it back if they do it will be called Taycan couple, you can see the changes lately going in that direction.
Looks more like a panamera!!! No thanks plus my gen3 has a real motor!!!
Vile. Ive abandoned Porsche at this point. Theyve lost their way, and putting out uglier, boring junk thst no one wants. I suppose Porsche will soon become the new Jaguar if you catch my drift. Lol
Battery banks are getting expensive.
nail in the coffin for porsche
This is simply suicidal what Porsche are doing.
Why do they always make electric cars significantly uglier than normal cars. Just slap a battery in the old model don't change the design.
Porsche...destroying their brand one model at a time.
Don't look like no Porsche.... Looks like a Tesla. Garbage. Naturally aspirated, gas guzzling cars, thank you very much.
This is an own goal. EV's are shite. Maybe theres a bit of gamesmanship in all this: car manufacturers will sue the rule-makers for making up shit rules down the line.
But, no one is buying EVs! And, Trump, in Porsche’s biggest market is rewinding much of the (largely regulatory) push for EVs. I can see these behemoths being a huge flop for Porsche. Time to snap up one of the prior generations of Caymans/Boxsters. They could even appreciate in value … Can’t say the same for any Porsche EV.
Man why dont i already have the money… gt4 looked so good this is ass i dont even care its electric, but it just looks worse
Making the Cayman an EV is a massive mistake☹
I'm astounded just how ugly this car is. It's almost like a 12 year old decided to draw a Porsche and utterly screwed up the dimensions. Look how beautiful in contrast the Cayman at 6.07 mins is.
Hopefully, it's just an ugly mule.
It is an Audi - Porsche lost its identity - all models getting full digital displays, bottom to launch the car - taycan looks like Audi Etron - so sad to see how the brand is so influenced by the volkswagen. EV are going to go down - for sportscar you need a real sound - a gear changer in the right hand not a something to the wheel -
If you own a taycan in the US expect to take a huge loss that is if you can even find a buyer
This is only about as disappointing as I expected. OK no it’s worse.
Looks hideous.
R.I.P. Porsche…
Why is there intake inlets for an EV? Likely just for looks - maybe to cool the battery. I hate the idea of a EV Cayman. YUK.
El 718 nuevo deben de meterle un motor de combustión más hybrido cómo el 992.2 GTS, que tenga una versión eléctrica o dos bueno...., pero el resto de combustión
I hate this EV bs. 😢
Good breakdown
its a tycan with a different body doa
Didn't Porsche exec's discuss moving forward with ICE options for 718's after all this negative EV blowback?
i think taycan coupe or taycan roadster would be fitting for this and come out with a new ICE cayman/boxster
I think the roof line shape looks like 911 instead of cayman
SWB Taycan.
