  • Shaquille O’Neal is known as the most dominant player in NBA history, but he has won only one MVP award. Many NBA fans believe that he was snubbed in the 2004-05 season when Steve Nash won the MVP. But is that the only year that he should have also won the award? How many MVPs should have Shaq won for his career? The author of “The All-Time Greatest NBA Book” series goes through the entire career of Shaquille O’Neal to see how many MVP awards he missed out on having.

2001 should be Shaq imo clearly him like Shaq playing inconsistent defense is still multiversal ahead of Iverson defense

Amazing, every time someone debates with themselves, they never give a checklist of the bars that must be met.

let's be honest, no one cares about the MVPs. we all saw what he did in the playoffs from 2000-2002. the highest peak in NBA history besides MJ, in my opinion.

This the most honest take on this subject. I wonder if Shaq agrees and how many he thinks he would have won?

I grew up a Lakers fan, and I was fortunate to watch him play. He was a beast! I’m sure he believes he should have owned the 2000s as well

It's insane Shaq only has 1 MVP.. as well as Kobe only having one. It's also insane Jordan only has 5 and LeBron only has 4. Hahaha. All those guys could easily have 6-8

That 2000 season is the single greatest year that I've seen a Laker player play. And I've seen a lot in my time. I'm still trying to wrap my head around why he couldn't do that every single year. You're right, he could have won the MVP multiple years in a row if he could ONLY stay focused!!!

That 2000 season was the only time he was 100% focused for the whole year. Imagine if he had that mentality all the time

How is he the MVP on the HEAT when WADE was the best player on that team. Shaq was not even the best player on his own team. Wade was robbed twice. One Lebron won over him, when he clearly had the best season, and this controversial Nash MVP. The Heat improved dramatically, but Wade was young, and they didn't even consider him. He Won the MVP in the Finals that year, leading the Heat to 4 consecutive wins after being down 0-2! Shaq didn't stay in shape, and he took his talent for granted. He is not the most dominant big man. He is not even top 5! This presenter was gratuitous with praise. Shaq had two statistically dominant seasons. 29 pts 13 rbs, and 28 pts 12 rbs!!!! In the history of the NBA thats just good, not all time great. No rebounding titles, ZERO! No block titles, ZERO! I am sorry, BUT dunking on people as well as bullying folks, and breaking backboards is not dominant basketball. He did win one scoring title the year he won the league MVP and scoring title. His statistics are underwhelming for someone who brags all the time, and he has all of these people calling him the most dominant big man is an epic rewriting of a fictional history. Wilt, Bill Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, Olajuwon, David Robinson, Dwight Howard, ALL had substantially BETTER careers than Shaq. Particularly those first 4 guys. Shaq is no where near those first four players. BUT those other two still have better resumes than Shaq. Even Barkley and Rodman were way BETTER Rebounders! Mutombo and Mourning and Ewing were BETTER shot blockers. Again, what category did Shaq dominate except backboards, and Daryl Dawkins even broke more of them rhan Shaq. Shaq was a good player, but not this great dominant icon people like to romanticize. I am going to give a little information on Moses Malone who was great. I chose him because he gets no press out of all the Centers on The really great list, because he was not a media darling. His career dwarfs Shaq's just because he was great at playing basketball, and he was dominant. Exhibit A- OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS! The NBA All Time leader in offensive rebounds, and he is 3000 rbs ahead of #2! By definition, that's what dominance looks like. The BEST offensive rebounder ever by a considerable margin. He also is top 5 in total eebounds. He blocked shots more than Shaq. He has THREE league MVPS, the aame as Bird. He was traded to Philly and the first season he leads the 76ers to one game shy of a flawless postseason that ends with a sweep of Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Jamal Wilkes, Norm Nixon, etc....... Lakers for DR J's only NBA championship. Moses Malone was MVP. He was a BETTER SCORER than Shaq, and a way, way BETTER rebounder. He had several seasons where he scored more than 33pts/gm. Shaq's highest output was 29. Anyway, that's enough for this morning! Don't believe the hype. Dominance should have some criteria besides talk, fan support, and broken backboards!!!!
