    What a beautiful aircraft. My dad took us from Chicago to Miami on a Delta DC7 first class in 1954. I was 5 and will never forget it. Back in those days, i was allowed to go up into the cockpit and they banked, climbed a little to show me how the controls worked. Unimaginable today, eh? What an experience!

      Same experience. On Western. Yeah, those were the days. Now, the airline experience as a passenger sucks. The prestige, pay, respect and dignity as a pilot has pretty much been ruined as well.

      I remember being able to go to the cockpit in the 70's as a 10 year kid. The pilots loved to show kids how things worked...they still do..but the FAA will not allow it any more. That love of flying translated into me getting my license in 90's all the way up to my Multi Instrument Commercial and aircraft ownership for 25+ years. Even had a flying gig for a short while just before 9/11 then got furloughed. Never was able to get back into game due to kids and bills.

    In 1957 flew Los Angeles to Winnipeg to Copenhagen with SAS in DC Super 7 on our way to Norway . Can't remember how many hours ,but for a 10 year old kid every minute was an adventure of a lifetime. Can remember watching the exhaust flame in the dark.

      The death of Eastern Airlines is a prime example of what can and does happen when greedy unions refuse to help a company but keep demanding more and more. In the end everybody lost their jobs and a great airline died.

    Beautiful, that's my favourite piston engined airliner being well flown in one hell of a crosswind. Look at the rudder inputs on the landing roll out. Amazing! They don't make pilot's like they used to!

    My father worked for Eastern from the early fifties till late seventies, I remember when he worked out of Muscle Shoals and there was a dog named Mother that would meet each Eastern flight (Martins) and after the passengers would depart. Mother would climb the steps and the attendant would give her cookies!

    This is a wonderfully clean and crisp DVD. Eastern one of my fave airliners in the 60s-70s. EAL, PAA, TWA. Those old guys. Classic airlines with now classic airliners in liveries some of which were elegant masterpieces drafted on to glistening metal fuselages. Beautiful.
    Now if only Air France would ready one of their preserved Super G's for some round-robin to, say, Nice Cote d'Azur (LFMN), along with some still good lookin' French stewardesses handing out wine & croissants that would be some video to watch, if one couldnt beg a flight aboard.
    This video is a good'un.

      That's nothing but sexist nonsense. Women weren't airline pilots back then because they weren't allowed to be, not because they weren't capable. During the Second World War, many female pilots ferried combat aircraft from the factories to operating military bases because the men were all deployed in the combat zones.

    The only DC-7 I've even had the pleasure of flying was a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Honolulu to Hilo, Kauai in 1964. The one constant I remember amongst propeller-driven aircraft such as this one and the Lockheed L-1049 Constellation is that it was quite noisy inside the cabin. We tend to forget that when flying today's much quieter jets.

      That's how we were taught back in the early 80's..in little tiny Cessna 152-172 trainers..never really perfected the technique, but had to use it in a 20kt crosswind @ Tucson Intl Arpt one morning, solo!!..Almost lost the little plane in the grass on r. apron of the runway..But I touched her down on the left (upwind) main gear, tried best to hold it fairly straight with the rudder..Guys in the tower were prob. yukking it up. In hindsight, should've aborted the landing on short final, advised tower, and skedaddled back to Avra Valley Arpt...winds not that much of a factor there that morning. All true!!

    I flew on a DC-7 in 1961 Panamá-Miami-Washington Nat'l-NY Idlewild (later JFK) with Panagra airways, a Pan Am subsidiary. Only long haul flight with piston engines of my life, rest were jets or jet-props. Fine, powerful aircraft the DC-7 was.

    My very first time flying was on one of her baby sisters, a Southern Airways DC-3. Then switched in Atlanta (doesn't everybody, no matter where they are going?) to an Eastern Airlines 707. Those were the days when you could ENJOY flying! Now it's such a hassle I refuse to fly anymore. If I can't drive, I don't go.

    • @paulcrumley9756
      @paulcrumley9756 3 года назад +1

      The connector at the BMEP transmitter was so relatively fragile and mostly exposed to the full effect of the relative wind, though with the afterbody props they were slightly less vulnerable. Replaced plenty of wires, connectors and conduits. I only spent a few hours one time working a DC-7, and I have no idea where its BMEP system was, though I think a more knowledgeable mech told me there was a flex line to the accessory compartment.

    Having flown turbine-powered aircraft over a career, the demands of operating complex reciprocating engines are very high.
    Imagine the adjustments needed by a Flight Engineer with four engines (and fuel ,electrics, pneumatics, hydraulics) to supervise. Remember the RAF Stirling, Lancaster etc? British aircraft in WW2 were designed in almost every case for only One Pilot, and often just an engineer, or flight mechanic to maintain almost all of the systems. And when that One Pilot was wounded or killed?
