  • Chris and I were talking about his intention to focus on just four locomotive in his collection and it made me reflect on what my own would be and why this could be important for me as well. I’d love to hear what you think, and if you make your own ‘Just four’ four video do let me know and tag it with the # below!

Very interesting and thought provoking video James and some very appealing diesels. I am particularly interested to hear more about your U18B. I bought a couple several years ago in Florida during my interest in North American railroading particularly the Seaboard system. The GE "thump" I always considered more appealing than the EMD "whine".
Might there be a forthcoming video of this quartet in action switching Beaverbrook ?
    Thanks again James

Thank you Phil… perhaps! I have received the etched windows for the next structure on Beaverbrook so would like to progress that a little before I do another video on the layout.

Hi James, thank you for a very interesting video and insight into why you have chosen the models that you have.
Recently I have been going through a similar process having parted with a variety of models and books that I had collected over the years.
My interest has always been and continues to be the far north of Scotland in the 1960s and the 1980s.
Over the years excuses have been made to buy locomotives and rolling stock far from my field of interest.
Now I have a small collection of models and books of which reflect my pure interest and it has brought me a large amount of satisfaction that my collection reflects my interest and areas that have and hold memories for me over many years.
Modelling 2 periods gives a choice of what to run with the infrastructure virtually unchanged over decades in the far north of Scotland.
One day a class 26 goes about its work in the small yard and another day a Caledonian 0-6-0 shunts the yard.
    Kind Regards
    Andrew Bellamy

Hi Andrew thank you for sharing your experience. These four models are not my only four, and Imremain interested in a wide variety of things - for me this was 4 locomotives for this one interest. I don’t think I’d want to limit myself to just one project, I find the balance between them all, different, era, scale, gauges and prototypes from all over the world a healthy balance for my own passion for railways large and small. Thank you too, it’s good to reflect that the thought works in other ways for other people too….

I buy the locomotives i like but you really have a point,Why buy another one to leave in the box...most of us can only run max 2 trains at the time i'm no exception in that 🤔

Four, to some extent, is an arbitrary number. The concept though remains worth considering, and I’m glad it’s made you at least think and make more conscious choices about your locomotives.

I should add of course that CN locomotives are 'Zebra striped' NOT 'Tiger striped' - a repeated error in my audio on this video!

Hi James love your videos I'm.currently in the process of building my North American layout and was just wondering were you get your kits from?? And what era you run your layout in
      Keep.up.tbe videos I love them

Which kits? Some are Kaslo Shops (S13, GP9RM and Sweep), one Briggs (GP20c) and one BCR Shops (CRS20).
Era? I suppose the last 20 years or so really but I don’t think about era when playing.
      I hope that helps!

Hi James that's excellent thank you I'm aiming for about early 2000 to present day but I'm adding in a RS1 and RS2 as a bit of modeller license on my shortline plan
I'll have a look at those suppliers that's brilliant thank you appreciate the time responding and that is very true 👍

Good luck! My next build (the ex CN SWEEP) will be finished as a lease unit, adding further shortline fuel to the fire. I built a Bay Colony GP9 recently and that was a lot of fun.

Did I miss it, but is the GP15 a detailed Walthers model? A few details would be nice, regards Paul

The channel is never intended as stand alone, sorry, I assume people will search the blog for more content… try this:

Hi, where did you get the reflective strips from that you applied to the locos? Thanks.
