I think that it's the landform that brings a model railway to life. If we can construct it realistically the layout becomes much more believable. Here I build a hillside which is the first half of the landform on the Traction Maintenance Depot area. See how it was built at Chadwick Model Railway 202.

Just voted for you as RUclipsr of the year.
I did this from a desktop computer: it may look a little different on other devices.
Go to the link Charlies provides and scroll *all* *the* *way* *down* *to* *the* bottom* *of* *the* *screen* . You can then work through the various award categories or just press the horrible yellow "Next" button to move through the categories until you get to the RUclipsrs bit where you will see "Chadwick Model Railway". Needless to say, this is where you place your click!
Thanks Thomas, that was very kind of you to lend me your vote. Regards, Charlie
Took me ages to find that I needed to go right to the bottom of the page ! Got there in the end though
@@ChadwickModelRailway "Lend" is about right! I want it back after the judging has completed ....
Glad to vote for you again :).
I had to laugh at your last comment, people are so entitled, ... "Push videos to me ... but I don't to subscribe or give any of my details, just make it happen Charlie".
I wonder sometime how some people manage to tie their shoelaces in the morning.
It’s s certainly a strange old world that we live in mate. Regards, Charlie
Hello from France , thank you for your very appreciated and very detailed video
Thanks Claude, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Hmmm going back to childhood playing in the mud I think :P Hehe, Great video mate. take care & have a wonderful weekend
Thanks mate, I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting. Regards Charlie
yet another great tutorial especialy7b for a newby beginner like me once againe thank youb charlie
Thanks Brian, I’m so pleased that you found the video useful. Regards Charlie
voted yesterday of course i picked you channel
Thanks mate, and your vote is very much appreciated. Regards, Charlie
Another great video as per usual, hope your nearest and dearest has reclaimed the hoover 😂,
Thanks mate, we don’t talk about the Hoover! Regards, Charlie
Morning Charlie; vote given )))) Chadwick is so coming together. It’s great to have the videos in sequence but it’s the subscription which makes it possible… free but it’s your own choice as you say.. excellent video so looking forward to the yard going on top and then the scenery being added. Excellent change for the aesthetics… wish all best for the award. Marc from Leighton Buzzard
Thanks Marc, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the channel. Regards Charlie
Another great video, you have my vote again.
Thanks Bill, I do hope that my videos will repay your loyalty. Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie, I voted for you my friend
Many thanks for your loyalty big monkey. Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie my comments have some disappeared I will try again . Great video as usual, its really looking good. Thank you again for a well put together and informative video.
Thanks Tony, I’m sure that your comments will reappear, as if they contain links, they have to be approved manually. Regards, Charlie
Great minds think alike my video this week was doing the exact thing although we took two seperate approaches. Good work
Thanks Josef, we appear to be on the same train. Regards Charlie
wow Very nice looking great what a nice show
Thanks James, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards, Charlie
Fantastic video! Great tip to use bubble wrap for planning!
Thanks NS, I’m pleased that you found it interesting.
3 votes from my family.
Charlie you are an inspiration. Thanks to your videos my grandfather has returned to the hobby and we are building, over 4 boards, a layout based loosely on the Neath and Brecon Railway (for my sons you understand😀). Keep up the good work.
Steve
That’s so kind, Steve, and much appreciated. Regards, Charlie
I like the way the white comes through the brown colour. Makes it much more natural, rather than a single colour.
Thanks Lee, it will look much better when I apply the scenery.
Regards Charlie
Great Stuff Charlie , And you have my vote same as last year mate.
Thanks David, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie
Brilliant train layout Charlie
Thanks Mels, much appreciated.
Regards Charlie
Already voted for you Charlie, as I did last year.
Although my layout is a mere shadow of yours, due 100% to available space, I've learned so much watching your hard work as you develop yours.
There's many a tip I've adopted with my various locos, rolling stock etc.
Thanks, and keep up your great work.
Stu.
Thanks Stu, it’s great to have onboard.

Thanks Stu, I’m so pleased that you found my videos useful.

Brilliant as always. I wish I had your get-up-and-go!
Search for it, it’s there somewhere nmah. Regards Charlie
All looking very good.
Thanks David, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
I cut celotex with a snap-off blade knife. Almost no mess but plenty of static cling !
Yes, it’s a dreadful product to work with. Regards, Charlie.
Plaster cloth has an upper and lower side. The upper has the thicker layer of plaster. Result is less mesh showing through.
Yes, I have noticed that. Regards, Charlie.
PS You got my vote!
That’s most kind mate.
I subscribe to many varying channels featuring watches, trains, van life, woodland camping, classic vehicles, motorcycles etc etc.. The biggest smile however is reserved for that notification bell advising me of another episode of Chadwick.
Thank you Honda, monkey boy for such a heartwarming comment. Regards, Charlie
Another great video Charlie ! Really enjoyed watching this one. I am planning to build a hillside with tunnel on my lay out too. I was going to “wing it” on how and what to do. You gave me some great ideas now ! Thank you ! Keeping making these great videos Charlie ! They really help me !
Thanks Jeff, this Friday’s video should help you too. Regards, Charlie
Already voted for you, who else is there. Frank
Thank you, Frank, I am so appreciative of your loyalty. Regards, Charlie
great video Charlie really coming along and looking fab
Thanks buddy, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards, Charlie
I voted for you!
Thanks Rick, that’s most kind. Regards Charlie
Amused myself last week with this, I downloaded the video at work to watch later at home (notebook but no Internet access) but I accidentally converted it to MP3 - but I still *listened* to your video all the way through. Enlightening with only sound, and I bet few people will make that observation :D
You’re the first that I’ve heard of Chris. But I’m pleased that you enjoyed the listen. Regards, Charlie.
I will watch it shortly, thanks, keep it up!!!!@@ChadwickModelRailway
I watched in the end, your videos are as consistent as cottage cheese and as solid as plastercloth, always lift my spirits, thanks.@@ChadwickModelRailway
You could use the plaster water to mix with the sculpture mould to avoid waste and add some powder paint to the water so you know what areas have been done.
An interesting point Hugh.
Regards Charlie
Enjoyed that informative video, very encouraging. Perhaps if you were to tint the white materials with food dye it would show up better on the video.
Now there’s an excellent point Richard. Regards, Charlie
Another interesting video Charlie
Thanks Martyn, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
I use a “brown earth” base colour, but I also add some splashes of green whilst it’s still wet. A bit like camouflage
Thanks, Redbank, a useful tip. Regards, Charlie
Great video thanks. I've just started my tunnel and hill side.
This has helped massively
Thanks DRJ, I’m so pleased that you found it useful. Regards Charlie
As a “spectator”, part of the enjoyment of viewing a layout, is seeing trains disappear and further on, re-appearing. Always have to stop what I’m doing when another Charlie Bishop episode is released! Another great episode, thank you.
Thanks Philip, that’s very kind of you to say so mate. Regards, Charlie
Nice update Charlie, all be it a bit messy in places. Hope to bump into you at GETS. ATB Graham 👍
Thanks Graham, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it. See you at GETS, regards, Charlie
Great job, Charlie! Looks fantastic. I can already see a lovely evening scene with a lit carriage train appearing through the cutting behind your warship :D
Thanks Edward, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. It certainly changes that end of the layout. Regards, Charlie
Great video Charlie, Have you ever considered mixing color with the sculpting plasters and if so is the color visible thru the depth of plaster material. Thanks for taking the time to produce this and previous video's in the series.
I have once Robert, but you just seem to need an enormous amount of paint. Regards, Charlie
Nice job Charlie. Are you going to lean on the finish hill side it's easy to get into bad habit 😂😂. Your layout is coming along greatly have a great day cheers 👍😃
An interesting point Ian, best nip it in the bud. Regards Charlie
Looks amazing charlie, best video for me to calm down after playing the last of us remastered
I’m so pleased that you can chill out to my videos. Regards, Charlie

You just got my vote, Charlie. It's lovely to see the progress of your fantastic project. Also, the video production is as good as ever. I envy your enthusiasm, determination and endless optimism. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪.
Thanks Anders, that’s very kind of you to say so. It’s great to have you on board, regards, Charlie
“Don’t get caught doing this” 😂😂😂
Just a word of warning, Colin.

😂😂👍
Great video Charlie on hols in Cornwall now in Devon for a week 🚂🚂🚂
Thanks Adam, and I do hope your holiday goes well. Regards, Charlie
I always paint the inside of my tunnels matt black along with the track which i ballast with black ballast before putting the lids on.
What a great suggestion Kelvin. Regards, Charlie.
Nice video yet again. That Hobbycraft paint is good value but you did have to eat a whole jar of Bonne Maman jam as well. 😀
Well spotted ODC. Regards Charlie
You have a vote from me. I enjoy the no nonsense approach and humble attitude. Some RUclipsrs hit a certain amount of subscribers and become self appointed gods of model railways. These videos are like a chat around a pub table.
Thanks Night Ferry, for such a heartwarming comment. Regards, Charlie
You have my vote Charlie! For the sides of the incline out of the helix, instead of retaining walls could have a rock cutting?
An interesting point Josef. To be honest, I’m considering all options.
Regards Charlie
Other brands of ice cream are available.😉Thank you for another informative video, Charlie.👍🏻
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Simon. Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie ... You got my vote ... I've just done similar to a corner of my layout using heavy carboard skeleton and ebay Plaster roll, ive got to put Sculptamold which I will use Plaster of Paris and toilet roll cheap option, then I've just got a Metcalf set of shops to put on top ... 3D printed portals ... your video was of great help ... Regards John
Thanks John, I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting. Good luck with your project, regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie,, the layout's looking really good! I think your old retaining walls are by Langley Models and are still available albeit not in the size you want. Suggest a scratchbuild with Slaters plasticard. Best wishes. Rob
I think that you’e probably right Bob.
Regards Charlie
Charlie, just a note - to vote in the contest link, one has to scroll WAY down, all the way to the bottom of the page, past what looks like the end of content and beginning of endless ads, to get to the start of voting. Good luck!
Yes HG, it does seem to be a strange layout. Regards, Charlie
Thanks
You’re most welcome Fergus. Regards, Charlie
In work all weekend but will look forward to watching this next week when I’m off 👍
I do hope that you enjoy it MP. Regards, Charlie
Evening Charlie.. Great vid as per.. I spoke to you last year about building a shed/room for a layout.. room built and boards fitted... took a bit longer than i thought it might, but thats hobbies for ya, as i suspect you kmow.. so its track laying time and wiring up. The fun starts here :) good luck with the You Tube vote... am sure its a given, but there is some tough competition out there. Peace N Love .. Davey P.. UK.
Thanks Davey, good luck with your project. Regards Charlie
Thank you Charley for another excellent video. I just voted for you as RUclipsr of the year... a rather convoluted task, wish I would have seen @thomas1964's notes before I went to vote... they would have made it a LOT easier :-) No problem though, I was determined to get the vote recorded and was successful.
Thanks Thomas, much appreciated.
Regards Charlie
What a week, I have watched two of my favorite RUclipss both doing scenery on their layouts. I am no where near that stage yet, but I am looking forward to it. Many thanks Charlie. Martin. (Thailand)
That’s great news Martin, I’m so pleased that we keep you entertained. Regards, Charlie
I've voted for you Charlie.
Cheers from 🇦🇺
That’s most kind mate. Stay safe, regards, Charlie
I realise that this is like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but I find that by mixing the water for the plaster bandage with brown / green acrylic paint it gets the job done a bit quicker and cuts down the amount of mess. You have my vote Charlie, Might see you at Rail-ex Taunton
Thanks mate, I hope to be there on the Saturday. Regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie. Another great inspirational video. Progressing really well. I always look forward to your uploads. Many thanks and I have also voted for Chadwick in the Hornby magazine awards. You thoroughly deserve it. Bye for now.
Andy 😊
Thanks Andy for your vote. I do hope that my videos will repay your loyalty. Regards, Charlie
You’ve got my vote already Charlie. Looking at the tunnel mouth and retaining wall, might it be best to use the height of wall you already have and then create a steep slope above it? Otherwise the wall could look unnaturally high. That would also work above the tunnel mouth.
Thanks Steve, I do understand your point. However, there are some absolutely massive retaining walls around so it wouldn’t necessarily be out of context. Stay safe, regards, Charlie
Hi Charlie, your retaining wall issue can be easily resolved by creating a tapered base wall with a level top running from your tunnel portal to nothing then start your existing retaining walls which will work. As you say it will look “prototypical” and like traditional brickwork of the railways.
Cheers Andy
Thanks Andy, that is my plan.
Regards, Charlie
Amazing transformation! Glad to see you are keeping the cutting into the tunnel in view. Always great to get your updates!
Thanks Gavin, I’m so pleased that you agree with this strategy in the cuttings. Stay safe, regards, Charlie
Voted👍
You’re too kind mate. Regards, Charlie
I love your "hands on approach" to making mountains. Bill from California, USA.
Thanks Bill, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Charlie, you've done it again, thank you for all your efforts
Thanks Steve, that’s very kind of you to say so. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie. Good vid as always. I'm always getting rumbled, even when she's not here. 😂
It’s like they have a sixth sense, Phil! Regards, Charlie
You are an incredibly meticulous modeller Charlie ..I will be honest I don’t always understand the technical aspects..but it’s a joy to watch 👍
Thanks David but I’m sure that I’m a little more slap-dash than you realise.
Regards Charlie
Looks great, you had camera angle showing the train coming out of the tunnel opening from the helix and the hill in the background looks really nice can’t wait to see it with scenery, my wife was appalled you would vacuum the patio 😂😂
Jack
I’m so pleased that you found it. Interesting Jack. Hoovering the patio was it bizarre undertaking!
Regards Charlie
What about using some 6mm thick sheets of foam for the back wall and then attaching some 2mm sheets of thin flexible craft foam with the arches cut from them to make that wall? Since it is foam, you cold remove the paper from the back of the large sheets and then use the adhesive to attach it to the table or thick foam used to make the land forms.
Now there’s an interesting suggestion. Regards, Charlie.
I've voted for you Charlie, I hope you can retain your title from last year. Great (and very messy) video.
Thanks, Stephen , but this one this year, will be really close. Regards, Charlie
Looks like you’re having fun Charlie.
Good luck at the GETS awards
Thanks mate, it’s great to have you on board. Regards Charlie
I enjoyed that installment! I miss the days of modelling scenery, but I'll do it one day when I get space again 😂
Thanks Richard I’m so pleased that you found the video enjoyable. Regards, Charlie
Also in last video you talked about the train tech ground signals, I used the DCC concepts ones and you don't get the light bleed in them.
Many thanks ODC. Do DCC Concepts make the Yellow/White?
Regards Charlie
Always get twice as much plaster cloth as you think you need I bought 24 6” rolls of I think 10 foot rolls and used more than I thought I originally needed by a lot. If you live in a humid environment it takes longer to dry out so take that into consideration
Good tips mate, and much appreciated. Regards, Charlie
You make great videos Charlie that's why I've subscribed to your channel and also gave you my vote as the best model railway channel on RUclips, please keep on making great and interesting videos. Adam
Thanks Adam, I do hope that my videos can repay your loyalty. Regards, Charlie
Looking great, its a lot of work building a layout. Can't wait to see the final result.
We’re getting there slowly, Lincolnshire Rose. Regards, Charlie
When ever I’ve had to do a pain in the bum measure like you had to for the tunnel top, I find some copper grease or something similar placed on the support surface works great. When you remove the bit that needs cutting you should have grease marks showing right where you need to cut, just remember to cut the right side of the line, I had a brain fart one day cut the wrong side and wasted a a board. Found a use for it about a year later though.
What a great idea SF.
Much appreciated.
Regards Charlie.
Hello Charlie, a mammoth hill and the Woodland Scenics roll looks much better than the thin roll from Hobbycraft. I used loads of that on very small areas in comparison, it always makes me smile to see the ready mixed paint from there too as that’s what I have. At the end, when you asked the question about being a subscriber I just knew the answer would be no : / Thanks Charlie and best for now : )
Thanks Captain pub wash, so pleased you find it interesting. Regards, Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway I had to laugh when I saw the pub wash reference Charlie! Very funny. Just to add the name comes from a nickname I had for my younger brother a long time ago now. He ended up being barred from a load of pubs on the pubwatch scheme in a case of mistaken identity, he hadn’t actually done anything! I found the name amusing and called him that anyway, long time ago now. Cheers Charlie from my real name, Alex. All the best
Thanks Alex, sorry for the slip up.
Regards Charlie
Jealous that you seem to have nearby hobby shops. The best I can do within a couple hour drive are arts and crafts shops. Really good for the parts of the layout I'm going to knit!
I do feel your pain Stephen, there are shops closing almost every week. Regards, Charlie
Have we ever seen a man have so much fun with celotex! Another insightful video Charlie
Thanks Andy, I must avoid. Celotex fetish! Regards, Charlie
Charlie, your secret is safe with me!🤣
What a lovely messy episode Charlie! One of my least enjoyable parts of modelling, being a track and wire man. However the hillside looks most impressive and is certainly a solid structure. Can't wait for the real scenic work to take place. Great video. Thanks for posting. Cheers
Thanks Bob, I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting. Regards Charlie
I am sure most of us would like you to do several videos per week. But we appreciated how much work it is especially editing for each video. I always check the home page and make sure you click video tab, to get the correct order. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Steve, but I really don’t have the available time to make them more often. Regards Charlie
Great video as always Charlie. Good luck with the awards. Look forward to seeing you at GETS. Roy.
