Hello Andrew, I was just going to pull my Pioneer AVIC8400NEX out of my dash and send it to the seller for repair - I couldn't update the firmware to version 1.01. Well, after watching your video and hearing that the downloaded must be extracted, I followed your instructions and everything worked ! Thank you very, very much as you saved me shipping costs and wait-time! Take care, Andrew!

I just wanted to come here to say thank you. I was having this issue and using Sandisk and Lexar USB drives. Bought a generic one today at Walgreens and it worked perfectly. I called Pioneer the other day and still haven't heard back from them. This saved me, thank you!

Thank you so very much! You are AWESOME. I used a Samsung SD card to put me in this fix. Had an old SD that had no name brand on it. Coping the whole folder for the AVH-W4400NEX. Keeping everything in the folder. Put it in started car. Said a prayer. And it works.

Hey Wallace Bounds! Good, that's what I'm going to use on my AVIC8400NEX . You're the first I've seen who has used the SD-card option - everybody else went the SB route. My sd card is formatted at fat32 and no other files are on it - wish me success! Thanks!

Long read... skip to the end if you want to see what eventually worked...
This was the only video I could find that even talked about this issue and from the number of replies, it seems that their firmware upgrade process completely sucks! I have an AVIC-8200NEX that i bought new a few years ago. My truck was parked for almost 3 years, just started driving it again and decided to upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08... I printed out the instructions and thought I followed them all perfectly but still upgrade failed boot loop! Turned out I forgot to decompress the file (unzip it.) I should have read all the comments right away, might have saved myself some heartache! First off I tried a cheap one from Walmart, it was an Onn brand. I plugged it into the android auto USB extension cord that I had coming out of my dash (plugged into USB2 on the back) and ofc it failed. The flash drive wound up toasted. I took it out and was gonna try the long format but Windows wouldn't format it at all, anymore. So next I went back to Wal-Mart and grabbed an Onn brand micro SD and I long formatted it, decompressed the file, and tried to update with the full size SD card adapter for micros, behind the touchscreen and it kept failing. So I wound up tearing out my dash and unhooked everything. I tried behind the touchscreen some more. Went and bought a USB card reader and tried combos of just the micro and the full size plugged into USB1 & USB2. All of those combinations failed as well. I was almost to the point of giving up and just calling pioneer and sending the HU back to them when I found a comment that said microSD cards don't work at all... decided to run to Dollar General and try to find a different cheap flash drive that was 16GB or smaller, no luck. Bought a PNY 32GB Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.2 flash drive. Came back and long formatted, decompressed file, plugged into USB1... failed like 4 times in a row but the truck wasn't running. So I switched to USB2, pushed the parking brake in and Crunk the truck... SUCCESS! So, Here's what worked for me...
PNY 32GB Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.2 flash drive from Dollar General that was Plugged into USB2 after being long formatted, decompressed file for firmware version 1.08 copied onto it from Windows 11 laptop, truck was cranked and running (not just the key in the on position), parking brake on (i have a parking brake bypass installed but pushed it in anyway.) When the truck cranked, it automatically started another update attempt without me pressing the home button. Suddenly it switched from all zeros to update it's progress. Did I stumble on the right set of circumstances or did I just get lucky?? IDK but if you read all of this, the point is don't give up. Hope this helps somebody and thank you Andrew for posting this back in the day. You definitely gave me direction and hope! Mad props!

Thanks for posting the video, I wish I had seen it before trying to update my AVIC-5201NEX After an hour of trying to get the unit to respond, I finally turned it of and now I cannot get access to the home screen. whenever I turn it back on, it comes up to the same loading screen, shows the same error message and stalls out. Doesn't respond if you push home. Can you help me with that?
BTW: I reformatted my thumb drive to FAT32 and reloaded the software folder before trying again.

    • @andrewlawhorn4987
      @andrewlawhorn4987  4 года назад

If you get the software extracted and loaded on the disk correctly it will automatically start running the install for you when you power on the unit, you don't need the home screen to complete the install, try installing the software with the directions in my video and if it still doesn't work try a different USB drive

I have already taken mine out because I was told it needed to be replaced. I still have it and I want to continue using it. I'm not text savvy at all. Would you be willing to repair it for me and I pay the shipping to and from and pay you for your time? All it was doing was loading and then blacking out and then starts that process over again.

I want ot leave this here for the people. I soft brick my avh-w4400nex, it got stuck in an infinite loop of "failed to update". so soft brick means your machine is not booting up. and in my case it just went to update then failed. i found out that if you use a micro sd card then the machine will fail the update no matter what. cuz like andrew stated and so as the forums that this device has an old ass memory reader (memory reader for sd cards and flash drives). So i picked up this basic sd card Lexar 8gb "www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQDGF8W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1". That helped to get my device to restore to the first version "1.00". So my findings were the firmware upgrade works only on a USB flash drive from 2gb to 16gb max memory. And make sure its not one of those smart USB's that has a hidden trash folder or a security mechanism built in to it. I purchased Sandisk 16gb "www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007YX9O9O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" and waiting for it. Now you might be asking why i didnt just update with my Lexar sd card since it got me out of the soft brick situation. I actually tried that and the same thing that andrew went through it happened to me. the update said "complete" but the version stays "1.0.0". I am hopping with the USB will help in getting me to version "1.0.2".
forgot to mention that the reason i want to update the firmware cuz when i bought my stereo off of ebay "used". the existing profile for the apple carplay is not going away! even after factory reset. once i turn off the car and back on. everything goes back to the previous person's settings. also the stereo is not storing my background settings and my iphone as an apple carplay compatible device. but it store's it in the bluetooth list of devices. so background is not being stored but the illumination settings and angle of the screen and the time all that is being saved except the background and my iphone as an apple carplay compatible device.
hope this was helpful, not confusing. if anyone need help hit me up here. cheers

Andrew so I already used 3 USBs already. In my case it says updating from 1.00 to 1.02 (latest version). Once it’s 100% it shuts off then comes back again and try to do an install once second time is done. Then it shows update complete! But when I go in the settings and check the firmware version it shows 1.00!! Did the same with all 3 USBs and 2 Flash drives. Same exact results. So was wondering if you sell your thumb drive? Lol ... I am serious tho cuz kinda desperate really trying not to spend 700 on a new one. I bought mine used on eBay as well 🤦‍♂️

Un-hook the memory wire from the radio if it's installed in your car and you don't want to remove the radio you can pull one of the battery terminals.
Once you apply power back to the radio if everything on your update card is correct it should restart the update on its one and Finnish it.

andrew lawhorn , thank you for your reply. We were all out of thumb drives around the house, so as I was talking to my wife and looking on my little valet were I found my thumb drive I found a SD card. I had never used an SD card on my car radio but I went to format it on my Mac and then copy the file over and that worked.
I have read another blog or somebody had mentioned about removing the hidden trash file from certain thumb drives but even that didn’t help but the SD card worked perfectly. And as I said, I format it on my Mac. Earlier, I had used a virtual machine with windows to format a thumb drive so I figured why not try something different.
