    When I was starting college back in 2009, wanting to be some kind of digital Artist, I emailed Gabe asking him for tips for what I could do to work for a company like Valve one day. He actually responded and put me in contact with Bay Raitt, who gave me some very brief pointers on where to start. It's been a few years since I've finished my degree, and although I never went into 3D as a career, that spark really kept me motivated while working on my degree and where I've gone since. It would still be killer to work for a company like Valve one day, it really seems like an environment where bouncing ideas off each other is encouraged; and I imagine it leads to some amazing stuff.

      Leaving a beloved franchise on a cliffhanger after multiple promises of a follow up for so so long- then creating a new game and not shedding much light on these many years previous- does create questions, no? But he has said they made mistakes and it’s clear HL is back on the menu so let’s see. I think it has been troubling him and this is finally a kind of vindication. I have a feeling Alyx is more than just a prequel given some of the hints. We may learn some long sought answers after it’s release and in the coming year or two. Valve listens, they have just outsorced everything but development - this means anything that's not coding/art/sound is not valve employees. Valve makes code (steam, games, etc). Valve is also a private company and don't have to do anything they don't want to do. So while they are "doing something" the people we are talking to aren't exactly helpful because they aren't the same people. Gabe cares greatly about his company. Everyone needs to just chill.

    • @HenkkaArtGames
      @HenkkaArtGames 4 года назад +2

      Imagine the amount of feedback a normal developer gets for their game (just look at reviews, steam forums and other forums dedicated to a game) and then multiply that by a thousand or more and you'll start reaching the levels how these companies like Valve get feedback. Of course, everyone thinks their feedback is critical and informative and helpful but just the sheer amount of it is so much that even a dedicated team would require a long time to go through all of it, organize it, see what is actually helpful and what is not and then somehow try to crystallize it into a form that is usable to the developers. And then you get to the developer level where they have to share their time between working on a product and going through the feedback and then try to see if and how to implement the feedback into their process and eventually to the product itself - not to mention rounds and rounds of testing after the fact.

      @sin21ful 4 года назад +14

      Will-In-A-Million well it is. It all sort of depends on who is the creators of the next generation of intelligent AI systems. Technically they can’t do what we don’t program them to do, but what if we program them to learn and interpret? Then the question becomes HOW do they learn and HOW do they interpret?

    • @Proud_Knight
      @Proud_Knight 4 года назад +8

      @Adam J. Harper That's kinda the point the guy makes with his question. Elon Musk and many others believe that is what will happen if we blindly continue advancing AI and that we should be looking to improve ourselves using technology instead.
      If we can map the human consciousness and transfer it into a machine without corrupting it, we can bypass the limit of our biological brains. Of course there is the chance we get a GLaDOS, but there's also an equal chance we get what happens in Transcendence.
      We can't program an AI to start with the knowledge of the most important things, if we could it would be simpler to just map and transfer an existing consciousness. If we build an AI from scratch, how do we teach it subjective concepts such as human morality? There is no way to do so effectively without a childhood state of mind but even then we could not keep up with the speed at which an AI thinks and learns. Every single mistake would be cemented into the AI's mind before we have a chance to correct it and that will affect the way it thinks. To me that means a much higher chance to fail and end up with a homicidal robot army that wants to wipe humanity off the face of the planet.
      TLDR: Build AI = 90% chance of Skynet | Build GLaDOS = 50% chance of neurotoxin, 50% chance of Caroline retaining control

    I find it interesting how the interviewer kept asking Gabe what seemed to be for him "unpractical" questions. Gabe practically didn't respond when he asked him if he reflected on his past, he said he focus more on the present and the future. Then he asked Gabe about the AI apocalypse and he eluded the question completely, and focused on what can be made, speaking about brain interfaces and technological advancements which give us practical things. Which makes me think that Gabe lived to this day a life centered on the futured and focused on the practical rather than the unpractical thinking. Which isn't bad at all, you need these to thrive on such an industry an position. But what interests me the most is that he isn't a "braindead" utilitarian guy, he seems more than capable of capturing and embracing the valuable things. For example he was very honest about Artifact, which is a trait most corporate-minded people wouldn't think of. It's so fun to analyze such a "revered" by the community person and come to realize he's a human being after all, like all of us, we might have our differences but we all come down to this, trying and struggling to be ourselves in life. Thanks for everything Gabe, I hope you the best on your future endeavors.

      I agree. Also interviewer could've asked better questions. Console question was asked as complete bait. I wasn't surprised to hear this question since IGN is mostly console focused outlet. And Gabe perfectly dodged this bait question.

      Not really a bad thing, its different, thats for sure. Theyre basically a collection of smaller indie studios / teams, so for example, theres a team for TF2, theres a team for CSGO, theres a team for new hardware etc.., afaik, employees can jump from one team to another without hassle (thats why, for example, TF2 might have 14 people working on it today and 4 just next week (though TF2 probably has like 0.5 right now lmao)) these teams might work independently of eachother, or help eachother out or whatever. And thus, a person can go into the lab, put some guns in, port a hl2 map and realise "Hmmm, this would be very fun as a game" and then people might agree with that person and a team is born.
      Obviosuly, GabeN would probably know about this, but considering the fact that his job title is more "Dota player" than "CEO" I wouldnt be surprised if that was not the case.

      The Half-Life series is a huge leap forwards in gaming, but Portal 2 with its story and gameplay is so unique, and it really bears Valve's signature game design...
      It's a bit sad that Portal as a series is most likely abandoned at this point, but it doesn't really need a continuation, and it will go down as one of the most important games in history!
