Half-Life: Alyx - Locomotion Deep Dive

- The Half-Life: Alyx team talks player locomotion in a behind-the-scenes deep dive. Valve developers Jason Mitchell, Luke Nalker, Greg Coomer, and Roland Shaw share some of our early prototypes, and walk through user interface, audio, and player movement discoveries that led to the game's final designs.
Half-Life: Alyx is now available on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/54...

It’s weird seeing Valve talk to us now
I find it even weirder that dev commentaries are available outside of a valve game
@Faylum1 boohoo your daddy wont buy you a vr headset boohoo
Valve remembered their RUclips password.
@Faylum1 All the Vr units were sold out and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive what you on about
@Faylum1 They sold out on Valve Index's. What the hell are you on about?
I was wondering why there aren't any developer commentaries in the game. This is a treat and I hope we get more of this. Its always interesting to hear the design process of people at valve.
Maybe they will add them if there's enough demand :)

would love to see a Half-Life: Alyx - Lighting Deep Dive. the lighting in this game is on a whole new level. would be interesting to hear the developers talk about how they came to this final amazing result.
Lightning is pre calculated on valve's game. That's why we don't see "open world" from valve
It's also not expensive on processing power
@@houghwhite411 Lightning or lighting? I thought there was some dynamic lighting. Shadows of objects are crisp and beautiful. Glow of the gun and item pickups is clean. Some areas have dynamic lighting. Maybe mixed in with some static lighting.
@@SolDizZo in steam engine, most ambient light is baked in, but there is dynamic lights from objects too
Probably they put the pretty and expensive ambient as "baked in" and leave the rest as dynamic
Hough White Valve used Dynamic Shadow and lighting in their every games since Portal 2, even Half-Life 2 has dynamic flashlight shadow since 2004. They’re also make the new lighting system of Source engine 2 for Half-Life Alyx that you can see the shadow from the game will blurring when the objects near or far from it, just like how shadow in real life work. And it’s called “Source engine”, not “Steam engine” btw. The reason why you never see any open world games from Valve that because they don’t like to made Open world games, with all of boring shit open world games today, i’m glad that they don’t even give a fuck about them and stay with story driven games, btw Source engine 2 already support level streaming system since 2014, so you can even created an Open World game with even bigger than Rdr2 with it. You don’t play any of Valve games since 2004 don’t you?
Why does a guy have to be aggressive prick
I don't see a point being aggressive except if youre the dev of the source engine lightning
Also, all csgo maps is still using static baked lightning
Hearing some developer thoughts and insights behind the development of a game is always great to have. Thanks Valve!

Guys. we can't forget that maybe, they don't want to, not out of disrespect, but more respect, I imagine so many people at Valve knew Rick, and maybe they don't want to talk about him, it's a sad, depressing thought that you lost someone to something they couldn't control one bit, I imagine even Gabe is having a hard time getting over this, so don't, stop trying to make them do what we want, let them, Valve, humans like you and I, do what they believe is their best idea, if they make a video to honor Rick, then they will, if they don't, then it was to hard to handle and it's early for that I think, let some time pass, I can't imagine they don't care, that would be ridiculous, but remember that it's always hard to talk about losing someone, so let them take their time, if it never happens, then it doesn't, And if it does, it does.

Is this supposed to be a witty comment? It’s like something the emo kid who dreams of being a writer says while the REAL writer in the class is actually writing.
This is terrific work Valve, I used to absolutely love how you made commentaries on how your games are made back in the ol' days. I'm looking forward to more of them and hope that down the line you'll add them in-game to Alyx, just like you did with Ep.2, Portal 1/2 and Team Fortress 2. They really give us a sense of the passion and care that went in the game and it's a feeling we rarely get today.
This really helped in my bachelor thesis about locomotion in VR. Thanks a lot for making this.
I love that you can peak around stuff! Great work!!
Half life 2: Don't sit too close to the monitor or you'll damage your eyes.
Half Life Alyx:
The difference between an old CRT display, and a new OLED or LCD panel
Edit: Since I need to explain.
We were told not to sit too close to TVs as a kid because the old CRT screens were actually harmful. They leak small amounts of radiation since it works by firing rays at the viewer to make pixels glow.
Modern flat screens don't use technology like this, and when you're in VR, the lenses focus the screens as if they're anywhere from 6' to infinity away from you. You're more susceptible to just eye strain from light in VR compared to other damage fears of older technology
@@JamieVatarga I do feel immersed
@@JamieVatarga CRT radiation is one thing, from what I heard, what makes VR not strain your eyes in the same way sitting with a screen on your face would is that these headsets trick your eyes into focusing on a "distant object", so to speak - they're not constantly focused on a plastic box 10cm away from your eyes.. Not sure how true it is but makes sense to me.
Despite all the comments comparing CRT's to LCD and OLED displays(which is true btw), it actually does have negative effects on younger people whose eyes that have not yet fully developed. Technically this should not be a problem since it is rated M 18+ and only people over 18 should be playing this game but it would be naive to say that the M rating stops people who have underdeveloped eye vision from playing VR games. It's not fully researched and understood by scientists, but as of now, as long as your eyes have fully matured, you should be safe from any severe eye damage.
@@mr0o that is very true considering I'm 17 and still made it rain on valve the VR totally made the game better, valve got it right, only thing that sucks is I can't play for more than an hour before I get a headache

My biggest problem with the movement is that continuous movement feels slow, I wish that there was some kind of sprint option.
The body is really static unlike boneworks.
I use sliding movement in most other vr games but it feels slow in half life alyx, so I use the blink teleport movement

Man game designers have to think about so much, I didn’t even consider how awesome the sound of your feet during teleports is in this game. Playing this game feels real so I don’t even notice a lot of the “game details” like I would in a pc game. I don’t notice the sound of my feet because I don’t in real life either.
As someone who DOES listen to their feet when they walk, I can appreciate their effort, also you should listen to your steps it's fascinating :)
that's the sign of a good game right there, when you don't even notice some of the things that you wouldn't in real life, like footsteps, but you will if you listen for them.
As someone once said, "good design is invisible".

The locomotion is very good. It makes it really fun to apply on-prop-standing knowledge in VR. I just throw a propane tank, move onto it mid air, and then just stay in the air while propane tank falls. I do this about 20 times and I’m flying!

I love that player height is an aspect of this. As a 2 meter tall guy, many VR experiences feel 'off' - because it's built for smaller people. It's fairly uncanny and can make the scale of things become absurd, and almost comical at times - even though the game is intended to be serious.

The only downside to continuous locomotion in this game was that I was unable to figure out how to run. I ended up needing to use teleport to escape many situations and to move quickly through large areas.
you can't run. you can use launch commands to make the walk speed faster but there is no way to switch between walking/running, you are always walking.
Joystick movement is pretty fast and the speed conforms to how much you push the stick...

@@mvnkycheez It is faster in most VR FPS. Or at least there is "run" option which is much faster.
Alyx was my first VR game. It felt so natural and I really liked the controls, however I noticed what you noticed almost right away. The best thing about the locomotion in this game is that you can do both continuous and teleport. I have it set to shift locomotion, but the left stick still will do continuous. It's a little thing but it makes a huge difference. I probably wouldn't feel ok doing continuous all the time, but it's really nice to have it as an option during fights or to make fine adjustments.
I used to hate teleport movement in VR. After playing it in Alyx, I found out shift was my favorite way to move around.
I played through continuous motion on my first run of the game then shift teleport on my second. Surprisingly I actually found my second run (the shift teleport run) to be alot more enjoyable and immersive in a spacious room scale setting. I actually found myself moving alot more physically in real life because I'd actually make the small movements irl such as side stepping or approaching objects, rather than simply adjusting my ingame position constantly with a joystick like a traditional FPS.
Doop™ this is completely how I feel
Interesting. I'm getting Half-Life:Alyx today maybe, so it will be quite interesting to see how it goes. I'll try shift teleporting first.

Open world games are finally dying, I hope. They were never a particularly good type of game in the first place, bar a few exceptions such as Morrowind.
Open world games are boring shit since GTA5 come out, i can’t even finished that game because it’s fucking boring, nonsene storyline. Don’t know why people get hype for those boring shit games like Cyberpunk 2077. Graphics and gameplay don’t even look that good.
It was sad to see beloved franchices like Mass Effect go open world and lose all the well paced, crafted and continiously engaging linear story telling that they used to do.
@@mvnkycheez they arent even dying
There are some great open-world games out there, but that quote is objectively false. I was never a big fan of open-world games, until I got into The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassins Creed, Borderlands, etc. Games like those are prominent in the open-world genre. Although those games are great, there are a lot of other amazing games out there, that have a more direct way of storytelling, such as Doom and Half-life. Personally though, the open-world genre is just another river flowing into a sea of games.
