This tells me that they are actually afraid of creating a half-life 3 cause it might not be critically acclaimed. But if this game does well for them, it may just be a matter of time before they dunk their feet into the waters again.
Peoples' expectations grew incredibly high with each passing year. Making 'Half-Life 3' would be incredibly risky because of that, as well as Valve knowing that they can't afford to butcher this franchise due to its reputation as some of the most revolutionizing games made. Making this game gives them a little bit of leeway.
Maybe he just hates being interrupted by the interviewer all the time. I noticed he did that several times. We get it, we're all excited about a new Half Life, but you're supposed to be professional.
13:20 this sums it all up nicely and I simply agree. do something attainable rather than either nothing at all or attempting the impossible and ridiculing yourself.
I would love to have that. Have you ever checked around Steam VR's mod workshop? It contains an old Valve test world that includes novel experiments such as pogostick locomotion. You can _Duel wield _*_pogosticks_* in VR, and race a friend round the map by bouncing off the walls. It's ridiculous, but I want a game to use it so badly. xD
I understand many are disappointed this is VR only, and I don't own one so I get it, but... this is what HL needed. HL & HL2 were both driven by great ideas, inovation and a passion for what they could do with it. This project seems to have all that. I will gladly step into VR if this reviews well.

@@Jonas.A.Larsen That is one way to look at it. After Episode 3 fizzled out and became vaporware, everyone was talking about how Valve would need to make a full length HL3 to make up for it... and then that never came either. In one interview with Gabe he mentioned "No one here wants to do Half-Life." The first HL was ground breaking, the second equally so with the Gravity gun. After Portal though, they were kind of out of game changing ideas. Creators need an impotus to be 'creative'. This is why they started investing heavily in VR to begin with. Anyone who has followed Valve over the last 3 years knew we would eventually see a VR title from them. Most assumed it would be Portal, but if this game does HL justice, and pushes the gaming medium forward... I don't really care if I need to make an investment to be a part of it. That has been the case with nearly evety worthwhile advancement, tech or otherwise, since "ground-breaking" became a phrase.

Understandable, Valve is hesitating making sequels for their beloved franchise because they need something that more "revolutionize" than past titles and any fps games on the market.
That's nonsense though. HL3 just needed to finish the story and continue providing on the tradition of excellent level design from the other Half Life games

I'm just amazed that they've finally acknowledged Half-Life 3 it actually gives me hope that they know what they're doing now. THIS IS WHAT WE NEED VALVE. COMMUNICATION!
They’ll never do it because the hype would be too much for anyone reasonably live up to.
