double thumbs up on changing the Shortcut Forwarding Engine and Flow Acceleration. Doubled my download bandwidth from 400mb to 990mb. Much more inline with what I'd expect with fiber
You're most welcome. Yeah, it's a huge boost in speed. I would think it should be the default. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Amazing video! I understand it's 1 year old, but I have a question and will post it anyway, maybe the author or someone else could still answer it: First let me put you in context: I have the R7000 and have tried other custom firmwares in 2019, like Tomato, Advanced Tomato & Fresh Tomato. All of them gave me the usual Ethernet speeds I get with most of the official Netgear firmwares (950/910Gbps on a synchronous 1Gbps fiber connection) after enabling CTF (without this, the wired speeds were terrible). What I could never get were the usual speeds over Wi-Fi that I get with official firmware, they were always terrible using custom firmwares at the time. The answer I got from the community was that custom firmwares (in 2019) couldn't use hardware acceleration for wireless. I was losing more than 50% of throughput on both the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands. I had to sadly return to the official Netgear firmware and have been stuck with it since. My question is: Can DD-WRT use today hardware acceleration on wireless on the R7000? Does it let us use the full potential of the Wi-Fi radios on the router? If so, how do you activate this on the settings? Or are custom firmwares in 2024 still limited to lackluster wireless speeds because of the explained reason? Thank you so much for your input on this.
I'm STILL using TWO Netgear R7000 routers with download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2024/12-05-2024-r58785/ They work very well. Make sure you enable Shortcut Forwarding Engine to CFT and Flow Acceleration to CTF & FA both these settings are found under the Basic Setup Tab> Optional Settings. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Hi Richard. I've tried several times to get this to work with no luck. I have an R7000 flashed with the latest dd-wrt beta firmware. When I connect via wifi, I get no internet. Thought it might be because of being downstream from my Orbi rbr750 and that blocking it somehow, but took the Orbi out of the loop and same result. I'm trying to achieve the two network setup, with the Orbi as main network and R7000 as VPN router. I've been trying to use wireguard protocol with Surfshark VPN. Any ideas as to why no internet?
That's a bummer but there are many alternative firmware available out there. Try searching for a firmware that is compatible with your model, or contact a firmware developer and see if they can create one.
I have 2 of these routers, one set up as router, the other as AP in bridge mode with wired connection. Will I lose that functionality by going to dd-wrt?
I set up DD-WRT in that mode regularly (in a simulated fashion but works the same) See this video to see that procedure (it works with stock and DD-WRT firmware.) Here's the link for that video: ruclips.net/video/mNh1r2_nKI8/видео.html And here's a video where I do it with DD-WRT: ruclips.net/video/5Ugb9Vem1YE/видео.html When you upgrade to DD-WRT make sure (If your router has the feature) that on the Basic Tab of your router you set the Shortcut Forwarding Engine to CTF and the Flow Acceleration CTF & FA. It makes a huge difference in the speed of the router. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀
Yes, it should be able to do VPN. DD_WRT firmware is available for it so you should be able to flash the router and get VPN up and running. The CPU is a little slower at 880 MHz (Strange that the r6700 would have a 1000 MHz cpu) but give it a go and see how it works. Here's a video on how to configure VPN: ruclips.net/video/ipN0yDmysYo/видео.html and here's another with a free vpn service: ruclips.net/video/S4noJ26XdpU/видео.html Thank you so much for commenting and watching. Finally did the DD-WRT on my R7000 tonight. I have 300MB Spectrum internet, but my PC is connected to the router wirelessly. I made the changes you suggested. I was getting only 170MB download before DD-WRT. Now I've lost 40MB of that. Not happy. I was setting this up to put a VPN on it, but now I'm second-guessing the change. A VPN will suck even more of what little bandwidth I have left. Bummer!
I'm not sure that I knew about this setting (Shortcut forwarding engine setting) I show it on this video: ruclips.net/video/S4noJ26XdpU/видео.htmlsi=dri-rppZUla3yB-E&t=678 Set that setting on your router as I show in the video above and then tell me how it goes. @@richardlloydusa Thank you. I'll play with it...but I may have jumped the gun. 24 hours later I ran speed tests again and everything seems better now. I'll check again a few times. If the bandwidth stays the way it is, I'm happy. Now onto a VPN 👍
Great, but definitely on the Basic Tab of your router set the Shortcut Forwarding Engine to CTF and the Flow Acceleration CTF & FA. It makes a big difference in speed and you will need all the speed you can get for VPN. Thank you again for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. @@richardlloydusa I did those changes when I rooted it. Every time I do a speed test now, I've gained 40MBs over the 170 I had before the firmware change. Thanks man! 👍
