Thank you soooooo much for this series on the Panasonic cameras. I have an S5 and your videos have given me information that was unavailable elsewhere. You are a delightful presenter!
Thank your that. I've been taking a break from the craft and trying different systems trying to get inspired again. Also have just been enjoying being a father, I think it's time to come back.
Have been using portrait since gh5, and now on the s1, skin tones look better. It’s basically same as natural but better reds. I also notice that lumix cameras have reds shift towards yellow, so a slight hue shift in the picture profile helps a lot.
I also switched completely to HLG. HLG has the curve in the highlights while Log has it in the darks. That explains why log has less headroom in the highlights. Another reason is that camera matching is much easier when Shootings HLG.
I got an S5 a few months back and bought the Panasonic 24-70 based on your review. Honestly, I like the look of Cine-D even without grading it, so I've been using that a lot. I'm going to begin experimenting mote with v-Log, but even that's far easier to grade than say my BMPCC 4Ks Film Gamma. Slap on a v-log to rec709 LUT and it already looks good IMO.
Hi, so you use the Lumix S Pro 24-70. Do you also notice, that manual focusing is not smooth? Especially when zoomed in, I see that the focus plane is "jumping" in tiny steps when ajusting the focus. It is very noticable with focus peaking on, and I can see it when I look at the footage on my computer screen.
I've used mostly natural profile however I want to try cinelike d. One thing you didn't go over was setting the saturation, contrast and sharpness levels. A friend of mine in the industry once said to me to leave all of those set at zero no matter what photo profile you're using. So my question is do you agree with that?
It depends on what you want post to be like. If you are trying to maintain maximum flexibility of any profile than yes, lower contrast sharpness saturation. However, you are gonna add time in post because you will be doing some extra work re sharpening or saturating. Typically handing off footage to someone who is not into doing extra work or if you just don’t want to do it for yourself than let the camera do it.
Hi, i have the S1 with the up-grade i would like to use the v-log view assist with different lut than 709. But the read LUT file is gray out , try to rename the file to 8 caracter ... but still the same proplem , it us so much easier doing it on the nija atomos .... can you help me ? 🤯 merci !
Hi, I have a question for you. Namely, I recently purchased a Lumix S5. Mainly for filming. I like to film very much in Slomo. However, the setting of high frame rates is somehow different with Lumix than with Sony. With Sony, you just set the frame rate to 120fps, for example, and that's it. With Lumix, a framerate is also displayed in the S&Q mode. There it says either 4K25fps, 4k50fps, Fhd25fps or Fhd50fps. Which one do I choose? When I first viewed the footage, in terms of Fhd, 50fps at 120fps seemed much smoother to me than 25fps. I didn't have to do anything else with the 50fps footage in Final Cut either, as it already looked great. But my goal is to shoot scenes with talking and drone videos in 25fps and the b-roll shots in 100-120 fps. Can I still set the 25fps at 120fps and then, on the other hand, have to do something else to 50fps in Final Cut Pro? I hope you understand what I mean. With kind regards Jimmy
HI mate. Can you please tell me where to buy upgrade for 6k video and V log recording on Lumix S1 I downloaded version 2.2 and installed new firmware but I don't have those options. It's mentioned that we need to purchase that but dunno how. Thank you
I use my Lumix S5 since 6 weeks now and it is amazing. I use Natural a Lot in 8 Bit for my RUclips Channel. In my professionell Videos for customers I use Vlog a lot.
@@JonackFilm at some point running a business wrestling back time becomes the game. Music Videos and Cinema projects or documentaries get log. So pre colored makes it easier for them.
Thanks for that quick note at the end about V-LOG and raw photos. I've been frustrated for the past few weeks with very dark photos and haven't been able to figure out why. I just noticed that my color profile was V-LOG. Changed it to natural and hopefully that helps.
I really appreciate your taking the time to prepare and do this very informative comparison! I am considering getting an S5 and as more of a casual and family cinematographer, I appreciate leaning from you better how to judge the differing variety and uses of recording modes that could help my interests. I plan on mostly family historical documentaries and recording live presentations that have little control over lighting, so want to be able to recover shadows, more low light abilities, but also have ample clarity in details; hence a FF camera. I also intend to adapt and use some of my old stellar Minolta glass (I'm an old guy here), so initially I won't have auto focusing worries.
The S5 is the best cinema hybrid in terms of capability to retain Dynamic Range and Color depth (10 bit) for the money. You give up great auto focus for good but you gain DR AND color and cost. It's a solid choice especially if you are behind the camera
Minolta lenses work like a dream with the S5, as you probably know by now. A simple passive adapter gives you access to a host of excellent and inexpensive glass. Just set focus peaking to the highest sensitivity to help with manual focus.
Tweaked in camera natural for me. Always. Pick your poison IMO, these cameras are not the strongest AF performers as we know so for the best AF, Natural and 4K 50p work best for me.
I don't know what it was but I always found my self fixing the colors more than I wanted to in Flat. It's subjective but there was something to magenta about it for me.

It truly does look great, I just can’t stop
Try flat, you won't use cined again
tahnk you, hlg seems to be the only Low Light profile/ HighIso
Fantastic video subbed 😁
🖤
Thanks for sharing. Have you figured out why RAW photos in VLog are dark?
I think that is just a glitch honestly. best to just avoid it.
Always overexpose V-LOG something like one stop then bring it back in the post. To get rid of the noise.
This video for me was really really useful especially for photos i agree on vlog profile for photos is not good but for video is amazing.
It’s so wacky for photos
Hi! Did you change the parameters of Natural picture profile? contrast, highlight.saturations, etc.
Bro, may I suggest you show good grading workflow for lumix s5's Vlog in Da Vinci please
Is rec709 almost like natural?

This video needs to be more seen
Good video 👍
Super helpful mate. Thanks
No problem 👍
I’m watch your video on an iPad Pro and find your footage to be a bit too high in contrast. Is this your preference?
I probably shot natural, if that’s the case yes :)
Thanks for the good info on the color profiles!
I habe a question regarding HLG.
Are you refering to the color profile or the recording mode?
The color profile
What type the len do u use for shoot this video?
this was actually the 16-35mm F4
How do you change the picture profiles on the S1H?

Same for GH6. Good general advice. :-)
I usually use V-log. I was a little afraid of the others. After your movie I absolutely have to try HLG. There is still a lot ahead of me.
HLG is surprisingly strong.
Was that the MKBHD outro? lol
First! Great info! But, you're misspelling Cine-like. Cinema-like.
Happens
Am i alone to use cineV ?
Yep, 😆
I actually like cineV but I like natural a little more so I swing to that more often.

Solid choice, I've used 8bit for some corporate clients that just need internal interviews to save on time
@@fatherofbirds yes a lot of clients dont even know the difference

Thank you. I pick up my s5ii soon at Yodobashi Camera UMEDA.

Yeah it’s a strange quirk but that is causing it for some reason.
For a while I thought I just lost my mind and shot under exposed

I don't think natural is the most contrasty picture profile.
I meant just of the ones I’m picking from.
Vivid is probably the most contrasty but I think it looks terrible
great video. I can't find HLG on my S5 so guessing it doesn't ship with this one. Thanks again.
HLG is after the VLog in the settings. I have it on mine.
Try to see if it’s available in MOV mode. I can’t remember if that matters but it may.

thx, very helpfull!
but i think, it's cInElike (you wrote cEnIlike) ;-)
…. 😅
