Thanks for sharing your journey! I'm in my first week of my bookkeeping business and stumbled upon your videos. It's so great to have someone sharing their journey from week 1 and beyond so we don't feel like we're trying to do this all on our own. Thank you!

Hi Rachel! I’m loving this series! I’m about a month into this journey and focusing on getting my QuickBooks pro advisor certification currently. So I’ve heard over and over again how the biggest thing with setting up a new client is all the categorization of transactions you are talking about in this video, as well as the chart of accounts. My big question is how you’re able to do any of it without asking the client each and every time how it should be categorized? For instance, when I do my own finances for our family budget, I use Mint (also made by intuit) and when I’m categorizing my transactions, I’m remembering what it was I had bought on that trip or how this subscription only bills every 3 months but I want it to show every month with 1/3 of the cost. Those are all judgment calls. Do you call your client as you come to each one or make a list of all of them and then call at the end?

Laci, this is such a great and specific question. I'm going to make a note to try and make a video about this topic and the logistics of bookkeeping sometime soon. But essentially you have to get a feel for the company transactions and then honestly do the absolute best you can. For instance, if I'm categorizing transactions that are made a Lowe's I know almost every time that these are Job Supplies transactions. Very rarely would it be anything different, and I don't really need to be any more specific than that. Hope that helps!

Hi Rachel. Did you take any basic accounting or QB classes prior to starting your business? You sound so confident and knowledgeable. I am currently in Bookkeeping course and have taken QB, acct 1 & 2 courses and now in Taxation 1 and i still dont have that confidence in me. I am starting to have doubts. Am i just wasting my time taking this program. Lol.

Hi! I’m really enjoying your videos, they are very helpful. For your first 2.5 hours spent categorizing transactions, what timeframe did you work on? Did you categorize last month, last quarter, or all of 2020? Just trying to get an idea for myself in case I get my first client within the next couple of weeks.

I am so so happy you've found my videos helpful! Those first couple of hours were spent categorizing transactions that were funneled from the business' bank account to QB; and if I remember correctly those transactions ranged from July to October, so about 4 months of records to work through. But there was also an excel spreadsheet file that I had to transfer as well. I hope that helps!

Awesome! Did you incorporate the Onboarding checklist with this client?

I have not created my own onboarding checklist quite yet, but I did look at the New Client Checklist that is provided by QuickBooks to make sure I thought of all the possible questions I might need to ask!
