Remember, a mantra of entrepreneurship is, "fail early and often." Failure, although disappointing, only moves you on to your next iteration, which will eventually help you reach your intended goal. Thanks for helping us by sharing your struggles as you move upward. Hopefully, by now, you are thriving.

This is great! I've been "posing" as a bookkeeper for 8 years now and with no formal training or courses. All learned hands on. It feels wrong to call myself a bookkeeper but here I am doing the work without the title 🤣 Great words of advice here!

But someone (and then others) had confidence in you to undertake the managing of their bookkeeping work, and took you on. Longevity of time proves whether you are competent, and 8 years is a very long time.

Thank you for the video. I started my bookkeeping business while I was working full-time in January 2019. I was only setting up and trying to take it slow to make sure that I was ready for clients. Well, in January of 2021 I was let go of my bookkeeping job and two months later, I received a referral. Like you, I eventually lost my clients in March of 2022. I am now restarting and this time, I am stepping into my role with the confidence I should have had before because I did take the program and I had years of experience. I admire the fact that you didn't have the experience and you boldly approached it. CONGRATULATIONS! and thank you again. All the verst best to you.

As someone who did take the Bookkeeper Launch course, graduated in March, and still hasnt found that first client, you are kicking booty lady. Just keep going! I see that your comment was posted 1 year ago & I want to ask if you have taken on clients for bookkeeping. I'm gathering all the info & feedback I can before I save enough to invest in my next endeavor. After a long layoff period I told myself that I would get trained in something so that I could have some modicum of control over my income stability. Bookkeeping has piqued my interest. I have a day job now and as soon as I am financially able I am leaning toward Booming Bookkeeping or Bookkeeper Launch. $2K or $3K investment. I would really appreciate your input and information of what has been your experience.

Thank you for being open and sharing. You didn't fail. You learned a lot. Trying something and being a millionaire right away isn't realistic. The nice thing about taking a bookkeeping course like 60 day bookkeeper is you learn all the business aspect of running a business. Doing bookkeeping and running a bookkeeping business are 2 different things. Courses like these help you learn all the backoffice and actual bookkeeping. I learned how to manage my business and work on multiple clients and how to be consistent on looking for my next client even when I was full. I also hired a mentor to bounce ideas off when I got scared. Good luck! Prayers and best wishes.

As a student of a bookkeeping course (60 day bookkeeper and ambitious bookkeeper) we were taught to always be marketing. Don't give up your efforts when full. Clients come and go. That's business. As far as time consuming- set boundaries and be consistent. I make $5k plus with maybe 20 hours per week. It wasn't that way in the beginning but I set workflows. Thanks for updating. Yes, I suppose home tutoring would be during evenings and weekends! Not really a daytime activity when your client students are actually at school!
Super to hear that you have indeed done the tutoring, after all. It's a very noble service.

Yeah I started my firm last year and had one client, my boyfriend joined me (now he’s my husband) and started from scratch. It is definitely hard. I was able to have him code transactions while I spoke with the clients and continued with marketing literally for over 6 months straight. My clients were mostly from people reaching out but I ended up joining a contracting website that takes a cut of my pay to stay afloat. You really have to be consistent with marketing because you never know. I did lose a couple clients in unexpectantly too. I appreciate your honesty!!!

I think failure would have been losing clients for not doing the job. The business didnt work out and that is different than a failure. It's an opportunity to regroup and either recommit or commit to something else.

Here's what starting up new is like:
    1) you're at the Grand Canyon - on solid ground. Everything is familiar: what you're doing, why, and what the next day looks like
    2) there is a walkway across the canyon; you step onto it. You walk halfway across (don't look down)
    3) the park workers start working on the step-on point of the walkway, and the step-off point
    4) you are now on 100% unfamiliar ground:
    - what does tomorrow look like?
    - why on earth did I step onto the platform?
    - I'm in a situation that is 100% not familiar
What you learn is something everyone has: "creature of habit" of daily behaviors on autopilot. Turn off the autopilot and attain the 'stranded' feeling out in the middle of the canyon, on the 'no-longer-connected' walkway and very much of life is new.
Most of us, if we're going to introduce new stuff, do it incrementally. Too much change is a PITA (this is why moving has the sort of 'unhappy' or 'unappreciated' vibe).
So, there is something called 'grit' where you're out on the walkway, and you say "fine, I have faith the workers will finish and re-connect the walkway to solid ground again at both ends and until then, I'm staying busy with new stuff"
The magnitude of 'grit' you need probably varies depending on how big an effort. I just read the story of Tito Beveridge, founder of "Tito's Vodka". In 1997 with no business degree, and a background as geophysicist and mortgage broker jobs, and zero distillery know-how, he taught himself how to make vodka. His networth in 2024 is *_six billion dollars_*
I know what kind of suffering and wondering and anxiety about the future this dude went through. Talk about a bunch of shortcomings. "I don't know how to make vodka, I don't know anything about business, let me teach myself to make vodka and sell it"
I don't know about you, but I have an endless tape recording "is my income consistent to pay for everything" that puts a check on 'grit.'
But I still did it. I haven't had a corporate job in over 20 years, and have done well.
But wow, not easy. The 'grit' part can be learned. The article I read is "Bert Beveridge" in Forbes, and the date at the top of the article says
    Bert Beveridge
    $6.2B
    Real Time Net Worth
    as of 6/6/24
    #489 in the world today
I think you just have to do it and have faith the workers will re-attach the walkway.

If you personally are doing the bookkeeping then is a job and not a business, because it is not scalable in any meaningful sense. Anything that makes you stop marketing because you are too busy doing existing clients is not scalable and probably won't make you rich any time soon. Or maybe it is necessary to know when and how to start hiring assistants and other bookkeepers to make it scalable. NEVER STOP MARKETING

  • @simonbradley

I love that you posed this question! Realistically, I have no idea of knowing. However, talking to people that have taken some form of online bookkeeping course, I understand that the biggest challenge for bookkeepers is landing clients. And my main issue was that I landed clients that happened to not continue to need bookkeeping services. That’s completely unrelated to whether I took a course. I think it was part circumstantial and part because I was emotional unmotivated. But who knows? Thank you for asking ❤️

    • @RiffMaker

You know, if I'm being honest, I don't know if BL could have helped me in my specific situation. What I do know is that I didn't have the money to invest in a course of that nature; and what I know now (several months after filming this video) is that I am more successful than I could have ever thought and I still have not taken a course like BL. Mantras, affirmations, imposter syndrome, motivation: all bullshit. You get up, figure out what to do, do it, get a result. Then either stay the course or make changes. Repeat. Of course, you can quit at any time. you chose to quit. No one did for you or to you. You did it to yourself. Nice video, though.. Enjoyable.

I recommend that you have a listing in the QuickBooks Pro Advisor directory. I have like 14 reviews in mine with mostly great ratings. It's sorted by zip code, and it really does act as a legit sales funnel because those visitors to the site are serious about getting organized with their books and some might be users already being rerouted to your listing as a local, help source from inside their QuickBooks. Of course, it helps to fulfill the testing process but all study materials are free in QBOA. I also recommend partnering with Gusto for payroll, especially if you live in a remote location. I hope you will have access to higher paying clients through remote work and Gusto and QuickBooks can be a source for this connection. I don't mean any offense to Church networking which is a huge flex but how long you waited for it to turnout is very risky; scared me. Reaching out to othe CPA firms is critical and local attorney offices and local payroll agents. In fact, business to business marketing has sustained my bookkeeping practice for nearly 15 years, not focusing on the actual business owners UNTIL you gain expertise in a niche. Let me know if you need specifics on QBOA and we'll connect!
