I went to ISU and lived in Bloomington for 16 years with a degree in finance and insurance. I got tired of being a staff accountant and started my own business, first with insurance then bookkeeping. I left Bloomington thankfully before starting my business! Now I'm looking for more clients, I love listening to your videos. And hopefully I can quit my staff accountant job this year!
Thank you for sharing your experiences both difficult and inspiring. Your success, I'm sure, will inspire many to get out of their own way and focus on the task at hand.
I love that you are so honest and down to earth . I wish I would have found you before I spent $5000 on another bookeeping program . But I will still listen to you and send friends your way. Spending time with your children should be on the top of everyone"s list . God Bless you and your family :)
I’m a CPA and have worked for 15 years in the tax field. I am miserable with the 9-5 and would like something more flexible. I may consider bookkeeping
I have BS Finance and accounting certificate, less than a year tax intern experience, out of workforce for many years to take care of my family. I applied many entry level jobs but no luck. Now I am thinking about remote bookkeeping but not sure where to start
Appreciate your story and vulnerability! I went to Illinois Wesleyan and worked at Elroy’s…missed you by a few years. Similar story, hated the staff accountant life. Left Illinois for the coast too, in Charleston, SC. Now work in commercial real estate brokerage and adding a bookkeeping business. Your content is the best I’ve seen on RUclips.
Thanks for this inspiring video. I am also a Bookkeeper and I don't have any background in accounting. I just learned it from youtube and fb groups. My problem right now is where I can get a good paying client because I am earning $4/hour right now under an agency locally based in the Philippines and my client is from US. Thanks and looking forward to your response.
Knowing more about you does allow me to trust you more and relate with you more. Thank you for sharing your success story!!! I can't wait to join the academy!
Thanks for sharing your story. I had to literally hold my laptop speaker to my ear in order to hear you, which means you have a way of captivating an audience despite the fact people are struggling to hear :D Do you think that bookkeeping has now become highly competitive and more difficult to reach a higher income level?
I' m 56. I could pass for 36 as i and fit and WAY into health. Have a diverse work background, and need a serious career change. There is an accounting program near by me, 2 years. Would you recommend Bookkeeping for me rather than accounting degree?? I also want to work remote as much as possible. Thanks! I enjoy your content! BTW, I can relate to your California story. Been there, done that! ha ha
I recommend getting into the work. An accounting degree is good for a 9-5 job, not working for yourself. To be successful in working for yourself, you need to dive in. A degree gives you book smarts, not real world smarts. Hope this helps!
My dude! Crazy our similarities, I’m in my apartment in Oceanside California watching this, moved out a couple months ago from Virginia. Have no direction and feel totally lost. Am about to start a bookkeeping certification course. Any entry level jobs you recommend while I’m trying to complete this year long course?
I have 2 bookkeeping and payroll certificates but I can't find a job because I don't have experience. I'm new in the country so not so many relationships or links. Now the question is how to gain experience if nobody is giving me a chance?
I am Sri Lankan.Sri lanka is south Asian country.I have an idea to start virtual bookkeeping business .I am going to offer my services to the USA and canada. Is it realistic goal? Can i get clients becauase i live in foreign country.?
It’s not a stretch at all to go from being a staff CPA (with the required education and credentials that go along with that title) to retaining book keeping clients. What I need to know is how to start from ground zero, with only work experience being in healthcare and no idea how to book keep. This video ain’t that.

What program did you spend $5000 on?

being miserable is not healthy. You are in control!

Great video! I am just starting my bookeeping journey and hoping to go rogue one day.

2003 was different you could get alot of clients using craigslist and newspaper classifieds . Not now.
We have several in our community that have picked up new clients this year using Craigslist, 2024! Nothing is a guarantee, but it is free to try.
Good video. But volume is very low.
Steve is very soft spoken, just his style. Laid-back

Bookkeeping is a virtual business, so yes, it can be done.
Did thecpa license help you?
CPA license is always a plus. But it's definitely not needed to be a very successful bookkeeper.
