Hey Morgan! Thank you for sharing all your advice! I started my bookkeeping side hustle last June and I have now made the decision to go full time! Your videos have been a great resource during this journey.
I very much appreciate these videos. They motivated me to start my own bookkeeping company last month. HOWEVER, after a month of sending hundreds of emails and walking into dozens of businesses, I have not been able to get a single client. The most common responses I get are that bookkeeping is too easy to hire someone else, or they already have their own in-house bookkeeper. Starting to seriously doubt that this is a viable career path…
@@mochalatte8202 How am I personally? A-ok. Professionally? Not great. I still do bookkeeping for my mother-in-law’s side hustle. And I’ve met with 3 prospective clients. But all three fell through. One said that the bookkeeping system they already have works for them. Another was a MASSIVE family feud that one side tried to bring in as a peacekeeper. The other side maintained their baseless threats of theft and my services were not retained. Although I was given $500 for my time, which was amazing! The third was an old friend I used to wash windows for. But he wanted to pay $30/month and then decided he didn’t even want to do that. That turned weird. But, again, he paid me $75 for my time. I can only speak from my experience as a slightly overweight bearded white man. It’s rough out here. My points from my original comment stand. I keep hearing from attractive female friends how easy it is to get bookkeeping clients. But people seem much less eager to hire me. 🤷♂️ I’ve pretty much given up. I’ve given out a few hundred cards, sent as many email, and met dozens of business owners. I’ve even partnered with a local CPA that said they liked me. If I get a request, I’ll happily pursue it. But I’ve decided to redirect my efforts to getting a regular job with the city, county, or state. (Which also isn’t bearing any fruit. I’m starting to think I may be the problem. 🤔)
On the reconciliation I always uncheck the entries and go through the bank statement. I find this takes me less time and more accurate because the feeds sometimes are the same if you haven't reconciled for a while to make sure you have the right dates (this is for cleanups that are months behind or someone who did not categorized properly). If you have been doing the books for a while and they are up to date then I would accept doing what you said.
@@FinePointsBookkeeping have you handled a client with construction business who uses qbo? hope you'll make a content next time. by the way, Im a newbie bookkeeper. so am really starting out from scratch. hope you can help me Morgan
Would love to see this as well. I actually have a POD shop (no sales yet) and have a tracking workbook I bought from a POD RUclipsr, but would want to put it into QBO.
Update in QB online makes it so that they only upload the past 90 days the remainder needs to be converted and uploaded when this happens none of the transfer are categorized as transfers they are uploaded as an expense along with all the other little issues that seem to pop up.
I love your channel---- you are a great teacher! Do you think a basic course/class in accounting would help before starting ? I wonder if just jumping in with Quickbooks would be harder if you didn't have a basic understanding of accounting?
Hey! Morgan thinks that if you don't understand basic accounting principles, you could still figure it out as you go, but taking a course definitely helps. Morgan recommends starting with the free QBO ProAdvisor training and certification course if you haven't done so already: ruclips.net/video/xKcCrN5Sn-E/видео.html Krista (FinePoints Admin)
Do you maintain books on cash basis or accrual? I'm guessing for most small business clients you would use cash basis. Also do you have to follow GAAP at all for any of your clients?
Hello! I watched your videos since last year. And you're one of the reasons that inspired me to have a bookkeeping biz. I am currently studying bookkeeping and QBO (Quickbooks Online). My question is, which one should I choose? If I track the tax in Vendor's information, is it T4 or T5018? #Canada based
Hi! Morgan does not do taxes or bookkeeping in Canada, so she does not have the best answer for you. Morgan recommends reaching out to a local accountant to get the most accurate information. Krista (FinePoints Admin)
Morgan, I am curious - when you started your business did you have any pushback - or people not wanting to sign up with you use because you're a small business bookkeeper and they'd never heard of you before?
Morgan started with friends and family (inside her network), so she was able to gain experience from people who trusted her so that she could branch out and snag new clients who didn't know her with the credibility she had gained. ~Gabe, FP admin
Hey! Here is Morgan's free checklist on how to start a bookkeeping business (finepoints.newzenler.com/f/start-a-bookkeeping-business-checklist-1) Krista (FinePoints Admin)
How much would you charge for these beginner services? $250 for the package of the 3 or $250 for each service or something that adds up to about $250? Thanks Morgan
Hey! There's a lot that goes into how much you charge (location, experience, size of client, services you provide), but Morgan thinks charging $500/month is definitely possible! Krista (FinePoints Admin)
It can go either way. If the client wants to give you the information, as the bookkeeper you can input this info. If the client would rather do it themself, that works also. Krista (FinePoints Admin)
But it's hard to getting bookkeeping tasks for the remote workers. I am from Bangladesh. And Know how to do the basic bookkeeping. But I dind't get clients. USA, UK clients can't rely in me outside marketplace.
I m also interested in booking remotely. Job posting for remote work always ends up saying that they want someone who is willing to relocate and ability to commute into office. It has been a little discouraging and I am in Canada

A good advice, don't target growth companies who already probably handle their books in-house. But rather target infant businesses :)
would definitely love a video on balance too :) thanks!

Why the Books By Bessie was charged to Office Expense when it should be income because your have received payment for that.

Hi would you recommend to used QB online or QB desktop?
How do you track your client work? I have several
Clients and can’t decide on the best way to track them. By client, by month, what program?
Are there bookkeeping opportunities that can go full remote out of the country??
Consider a client who doesn't use QuickBooks or any software. Where do you start doing everything you have said in this video?
Can I learn and what do I need to do
How much would you charge for these beginner services?
$250 for the package of the 3 or $250 for each service or something that adds up to about $250?
Thanks Morgan
I have that same question.
how much do you charge your clients for this exact same service? $500/month? That would be my goal. Great video thank you!
