Thumbs up for mullets?! Brian shared some more thoughts on the duo, here: www.vitalmtb.com/features/Demo-Mullet-vs-Demo-29-Specialized-DH-Bikes-Go-Head-to-Head,2937
I wonder how much of the stability of the 29 can be attributed to the Ohlins and tire width setup. It'd be great to redo this sort of test with equal suspension and tire width, or to simply make use of the mullet's capability of running a 29 setup vs the mullet setup to remove all other variables.
I’ve been racing the Demo 29 Race the exact version in this video and it’s been really good. But I definitely feel like it’s much harder in the trees and tight stuff then the mullet set ups. I’m the youngest pro in my race series and I’m def at a disadvantage but still charging hard pulling good results with this rig. Excellent bike, it’s for sure the most stable bike I’ve ridden as well.
Well I have a demo 9 pro frame that thing weighed 50lbs from factory I got it down to 41lbs with modern parts that's only big difference I see from 8 and 9 is the weight.
Appreciate it Weston. The Demo 8 was a sleek, awesome looking machine, the mullet and 29er is a completely different bike with many different changes. Check out the Specialized 29er review we did last year that explains many of the differences.
Short question ? Where’s the problem with putting the mullet set up with the 2020 version? Because it’s in the middle section I guess? Also with the 2021 model in the middle section are both wheelsizes possible? The only difference is that I can not change this 3 adjustments short, middle, long? Thanks for any advice :) merry Xmas everyone..
Hmm...when comparing the segment times, if we just take the fastest segments of each run mullet still wins, can't be attributed to skidding out one time can it?
Can someone exlpain to me why the reach on the Demo is so small? I want to buy one but the only available size at my local dealer is S3. I am a bit worried that it‘s too small since my Meta has a way bigger Reach and it feels awesome. Unfortunately test riding is not possible.
Check out neko mullalys test vids. He was saying when staying neutral on the bike the shorter reach allows the weight on the pedals to also put more traction on the front wheel through the feet without having to consiously focus on weighting the front. also the shorter reach allows a bit more movement towards the back of the bike in steep stuff before the arms are at full extension. i think part of the thinking with dh bikes is that the slacker headangles and extra travel allows shorter reaches due to those former attributes meaning more stability and trail numbers being high ie front wheel feels more out front compared to a trail bike
As a Medium frame rider I fell for myself 29" wheels are too large unless you really need that straight line high speed stability which isn't needed where I live. I fell for Medium riders a 2.35 or 2.4" rear wheel matched with a 2.6" front tire is perfect. The 2.6" tire basically makes the diameter closer to a 29er and give you all the grip where you need it.
Good stuff as always! It seems like Specialized is trying to make a very racy bike (29" with Ohlins) a little more friendly and enjoyable off the racetrack. Those Ohlins forks are pretty gnar if you're just out cruising, even for the bigger riders - smart spec change IMO.
For every class of bike you upgrade to, like going from trail to enduro to dh, the stanchions must must must get thicker, and the rotors need to grow exponentially! Most people, bikes are fine from factory, but us heavier guys who like big features and steep terrain, our factory bikes just wont cut it unless you fork over half your savings. My big enduro bike has 35mm stanchions, I think I'll be upgrading that eventually, but I have an upgraded jade coil on the back with 650lb spring...I'm 215 on a bad day by the way, and then finally switched the wimpy 180mm rear rotor for a 200mm and it is a totally different bike when at the parks. Still want to got 220mm rotor up front! Anyone that tells you differently just isnt as heavy as us and they domt understand!!!
I think anyone can benefit. There are many variables that will ultimately lead to a final decision, and a lot of it does come down to terrain, and personal preference/riding style.
Mulletboi looked like his feelings were hurt when he smashed the track with the 29/27.5 bike. He started making excuses like he was talking to a cop during a traffic stop.
Thumbs up for mullets?!

Not from the ground up @MulletCycles ;)
I can't quite put my finger on the reason why, but this guy seems like a true expert on Mullets.

great ideas and worthy of another comparison project in the future
Vital once again showing they’re the only rag that has reviewers that can ride
Appreciate the compliment
"the only"
you forget about the rest of youtube, no, the internet?
@@tylergarza8695 it’s unfair to freehub, but for the most part I stand by it
nice video but should've tested with exact same components and so on
Absolutely. I would argue that for some people Öhlins vs Rockshox is a bigger difference than 29 vs Mullet
That’s kind of a useless test if you’re wondering which to buy
Agreed, you could have both specs but 2 needed to be duplicate so at least 3 bikes
In a perfect world that would be optimal, but we thought it would be interesting to compare the available Specialized options as is.
@@bbuell80455, but that is to logical and people always need to piss and moan about how you did it wrong.

Why are no one taking about the demo expert 2023 ? I’m in love with that bike 😍
Hurray for Durango Colorado and Purgatory Ski Area!
There you have it folks 27.5 is the pinnacle of mountain bike size for all around rides, if you want a more comfy ride go with the 29.👍
*if you want a fast bike go mullet/29
Awesome comparison! Thanks for that! Now just wondering how the demo 8 carbon frame compares to the aluminum demo 9? 🤔🤔🤔
huh? What does that mean? These are new demo 8 and so far no carbon, what's demo 9?
If you mean new demo to old carbon demo it's no comparison, new ones are way better in wheel path, anti rise and progression. And cog is way lower.
@@RiderP411 These are not Demo 8.

Appreciate it, Party on!
i would have the mullet bike with Ohlins
This has me really interested in the new Specialized Status, their new trail/enduro mullet bike.

Hi mate, wondering if you ever found out the answer to this question haha just got a 2020 version myself
The 29 demo8 can you make it mullet? The Geo will not change?
What the difference between the two frame?
Hmm...when comparing the segment times, if we just take the fastest segments of each run mullet still wins, can't be attributed to skidding out one time can it?
Im 1.80 tall
the size S3 is good for me? considering that I will grow another 3 cm in a year or 2
Can someone exlpain to me why the reach on the Demo is so small?
I want to buy one but the only available size at my local dealer is S3.
I am a bit worried that it‘s too small since my Meta has a way bigger Reach and it feels awesome. Unfortunately test riding is not possible.
The 466mm reach in the S4 did not feel small to me being 6 foot 1 inch. How tall are you?
@@bbuell80455 Yea i imagine S4 would be perfect. I am 6 foot. As I mentioned I could only buy a S3 with 446 mm Reach.

R u guys gonna do a mullet demo vs mullet sender?
hard choise, anyway I ride a demo

Good video. Here's a random comment to boost your stats because good videos.
Awesome video!
appreciate it!
That was a pretty diplomatic comparison hahaha but the 2nine for the win....
Thanks for this Nice video
you're welcome, had a blast creating it for you, glad you enjoyed it!
I would’ve tested it using the same spec bike for both, so that it’s more fair. It would’ve kept one variable. But Ik it can be tough to do.
2.3 at front? is it even legal?
sick mullet bro 😆
appreciate it, been growing it out since April in anticipation of getting the full mullet bike riding experience
Would an average rider benefit from a mullet set up?
I think anyone can benefit. There are many variables that will ultimately lead to a final decision, and a lot of it does come down to terrain, and personal preference/riding style.
I wonder how a 27.5 wheelset Demo would compare. Doesn’t look like the 29er is better, seems like everyone just wants it to be better.
Sick
2021 downhill bike shootout?????
Campaign and keep bugging Spomer and Turman, they’ll give the people what they want!
Man I wish there are bike park here in our region
Scott has been doing this for 7 years. Adjustable BB height and chainstay length. LOL
He likes mullets.
Free mullet: 26" front and 24" back. Fuck the fashion.
If you have the 5th run on the demo 29er, I am sure Demo 29er will be fastest.
3 sec you can't argue on thats ...
mullet guy on mullet bike. LOL
Brian likes a mullet
Shoulda talked more about the tight stuff
Mulletboi looked like his feelings were hurt when he smashed the track with the 29/27.5 bike. He started making excuses like he was talking to a cop during a traffic stop.
diffent suspension, tires what's the point of this comparison ? XD
Good question, we thought it would be fun to take their current offerings and compare them in the current spec.
So you can just know the difference if you were interested in the bikes prob but I agree with you you can’t compare
"Brung"? Hahaha
mullets a Mullet. maybe the set up of the Mullet is more aggresive than the 29.....
Bike should have been same speck...
Still no S5 tho :/ apparently y’all think tall people don’t exist >:(
How tall are you? I'm 6 foot 1 inch and the 466mm reach felt perfect for me.
Funky idea. I dont think thats gonna catch on tho
now do v10

Ohlins vs rocksucks no comparison
