- What is a short cervix in pregnancy?
A short cervix is not considered an incompetent cervix.
A short cervix without silent dilatation with delivery of baby at term means that mom did not have an incompetent cervix.
This is observed in retrospect. Therefore, healthcare providers observe or treat out of caution.
Normal cervical length: 4-5 cm
Short cervix: 2.5 cm or less before week 36 gestation
Diagnosis
Internal ultrasound/sonogram
Treatment
Evaluation and observation with bedrest and pelvic rest
Modified bedrest to reduce pressure on cervix
Pelvic rest to prevent infection and initiation of labor
Cervical cap / pessary
Noninvasive treatment option
Increased risk for infection
Cervical cerclage placement
Invasive procedure (surgery)

You don’t have to be afraid , because it is worth trying again for a baby! I had my first child at 30 weeks, but she survived even though I stayed in hospital for 7 weeks! My second daughter came on time at 38 weeks after applying a cerclage at 14 weeks, so it doesn’t mean that you will have a premature baby or miscarriage again! Good luck and stay healthy!
My first daughter came at 30 weeks too and stayed for 8 weeks in the hospital
Thank you for this. Very well explained.
This is so helpful Dr. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for posting this video

I am nine weeks pregnant. My cervix length is 3.5 cms. Is that normal?
Hi , I'm 36 yrs old expecting baby #3. I was diagnosed with a short cervix length of 2.6cm at my 20 week scan. I have not had previous preterm deliveries. My doctor prescribed vaginal progesterone & said she will only monitor my cervix length by transvaginal ultrasound until 24 weeks & will not do a surgical surclage unless I'm 1.5cm . I do not feel comfortable with this decision. You stated you would continue measuring the cervix well past 24 weeks, what method would you use? & do you agree with my doctor choice ? Thank you
Hi what further steps did you take? Even am diagnosed with same issue for my 2nd...did you have the cerclage yet?
Hi, I'll be turning 23 weeks , this week. And this will be my last week that measure my cervix by transvaginal ultrasound . I am only currently taking vaginal progesterone. Ny doctor said I would have to measure 1.5cm to get a cerclage. Last week I measured 2.6cm. No u do not have cerclage.
My doctor did the same thing for me and I delivered my baby to 39 weeks and was taking progesterone.
@@sscc6853 what about your baby now
Hi Dr,
I have short cervix.i lost 2 babies due to this.i did mc Donalds cerclage @ 3 month.i had funneling at 5th month.again did shirodkar and delivery at 26 week.
What to do on next pregnancy?.
Cerclage is failed..
Did ur Ob recommend progesterone. Cerclage and progesterone are great combination. FDA voted against Makena(Injectable progesterone)but you can have the capsule inserted into your vaginal daily.
Did suture used is mersilene tape?
Transabdominal cerclage
Now my cervix open in 1cm, im so scared, i dont want to lose again😭😭😭😭😭
I hope everything is well. Praying for you and you baby.
If you don't mind me asking, did you go through this before? And did you lose your baby?
The reason I'm saving is because I recently went into preterm labor at 22 weeks on 6/7/21 and I'm just so confused and hear broken trying to understand what happen.
I started having contractions and I was started to dialate. When they checked me they told me my cervix was short and that that was not a good sign a long with the rest of the symptoms. My baby was born with a heart beat but due to the hospitals guide lines they said they couldn't do anything for my baby unless he was 23 weeks. I still feel mad at the hospital and I feel guilty in me like I didn't protect my baby , my body failed my baby on keeping him safe. I'm so scare of trying again and for it to happen again
Sorry for your loss
How is your baby now
Unfortunately, I had no idea I had a short cervix. Though my baby was absolutely healthy, I lost him at 20th week.
I recently lost mine at 22 week on 6/7/21.i was having contractions and dilating once they checked me they told me my cervix was short.
I am devastated as my baby was born with a heart beat but due to the hospitals guide lines they said they couldn't do nothing for my baby unless he was 23 weeks ...I felt so mad that they told me that since my baby was still alive I felt like they just let him died and I feel like I failed to protect him 😭😭😭💔💔
@@dayamyventura9925 I can absolutely understand what you must have gone through. I too had the same feeling of not being able to protect my baby who was otherwise absolutely healthy...but..it all sums up to one thing...God decides what is best for us. So submitting to Him is the only way to be...
I just went to my 20th week scan and my cervix measured 10 mm- was sent to hospital and then to another and had a cerclage the next day. Praying my baby stays in as she is otherwise healthy! I’m so sorry that happened to you and your precious child.
@@dayamyventura9925 oh my god. That is horrendous , you poor poor thing. What country are you in? I hope you're doing ok
@@cestlavie1637 I'm in California, it's going to a year in June since I lost my baby and it don't get easy but you learn how to cope with it. I recently found out I'm pregnant and it makes me sad that I can't even fully enjoy it and be happy because of my past trauma it's so difficult to not be worry and scare..but I left Kaiser and found a new Dr that she's been amazing I am currently 7 weeks praying for the best.
