This subject could have been interpreted better in spiritual lines rather than mixing up material life aspects and puranam lore.
The ego is the epicentre of a jeevan accumulating punya and Papa duly embedded as samskaras or vasanas in the chittam in subtle form(not secret form).Karma unfolds when the vasanas are ripened for manifestation and the physical body is the vehicle to spend prarabda or ripened vasanas.Once all the ripe vasanas are exhausted or spent , the physical body drops off vide decay or de-manifestation called mundane death.When the last prarabda vasana or karma phala exhaustion is on,the physical life form disintegrates called physical death.By the design of Avidya,the subtle and causal bodies will remain for remanifestation after a brief state of waiting state called pitru lokam ruled by Righteousness or Dharma inside ones Chitta.
However after physical body's death, the subtle body remains and is merged in causal body for remanifestations or rebirths in life forms, till all sanchitha or accumulated vasanas are exhausted.
The Real Self or Brahman is the only reality but the veil of Avidya vide causal body causes the avarana for a jeeva or illusory ego state to be manifested to be felt as real.All karmas done with ego centric perspective,fetches karmic results or energy in the form of punya or papa,duly recorded in the Chitta in the antakarana of the jeeva.All remanifestation are intended to burn off or expend the karmic vasanas accumulated in the Chitta through various life forms configurations designed specifically as per the vasanas and the Gunas of Prakriti .
Hence the Jeeva state with the inner antakarana are tools of Avidya exhibiting the reflected consciousness .Once the causal body is eliminated by decimating the egohood,then there will be no karmic vasanas to be burnt or no rebirth called liberation or moksha. This has no correlation with the physical body decaying or undergoing death,in that the liberation from the kingdom of Avidya based Jeeva state is to be achieved when one is alive and not after physical death.The subtle vasanas in the Chitta and their illusory source called the ego can be effaced or merged in the Brahman(Real Self) or Bhagavan by the life long practise of spiritual techniques as laid down in Karma,Bhakti,Jnana yoga practices.In short the mind and body are as unreal as the World created by the ego or the first thought surfaced in Chitta.
Dharma and Adharma are of the Dualistic world and Chitragupta or inner conscience keeper of ones subtle karmas are symbolic name & form narrative for simple understanding like a puranic story.Yama Niyamas are the basic foundations or tenets of ashtanga yoga practices and have no relation with Dharma raja of purana.

ഇങ്ങനെ നമ്മുടെ കർമ്മങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ത്തോളം കാലം കർമ്മ ഫലം അനുഭവിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതം തുടർന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും ഒരു രൂപത്തിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വേറെ രൂപത്തിൽ ഒരു ലോകത്തിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വേറൊരു ലോകത്തിൽ

Everyone can't read Vedas especially in this kaliyuga. But listening Bhagavatha purana brings lot of happiness and devata presence for me. One can do saguna araadana thereafter he will be eligible for nirguna araadana.
