I'm glad that you didn't wait until you're in your 40's like me to realize that it's okay to live your own life and believe what you want to believe. I never had my dad, but I had a close loving relationship with my mom and grandparents. I was raised in a strict Southern Christian home. Everything I always felt drawn to I was told was evil and satanism. Long story short, I lost my grandparents and mom all within a few short years, and I was left standing on my own. I decided to embrace witchcraft and turn my back on the way that I was raised as they weren't here for me to disappoint anymore. I'm 3 years in and I am healthier and happier than I have ever been in my life! I still have those back of my mind feelings and thoughts, but I'm shedding them more and more as time goes on. The most important thing that I have learned is that it's not only okay, but essential to love ourselves and do what makes US happy. Not just live to make everyone else happy. It's not selfish!
This mindset reminds me of the philosophy spoken by the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee: "Be formless, shapeless - like water! If you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water in bottle, it becomes the bottle, if you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot, water can flow, drip, creep or crash - be water my friend!"
Magic is like water, it's the bloodstream of the universe, it flows within the veins of the cosmos, and within us! I think this approach you shared can really help occultists achieve the gnosis they seek. Good stuff as always Ivy! 🤘🍎🐍

This video resonated with me so much. I currently live with my super Christian parents and my mom is always gaslighting me about magic and how it isn't real. It's really affected my practice. Also the bit where you mentioned trying to believe in something other than how you were raised. I often struggle with the concept of hell and that what I'm doing is somehow bad or wrong. I think this will get better once I have my own place again and can practice more freely. But for now, it's a struggle.
I have been trying to magnify my practice while deconstructing after leaving a high demand religion/cult after 40+ years. You described this struggle exquisitely.

I was an atheist in my young adult years, with some interest in Buddhism and Taoism. Later, as I traveled a bit, I began to discover a power within using my unconscious, intuitive mind that i might never have discovered with a mind colored by preconceived ideas from religion. Now I do believe in the supernatural or interdimensional existence of other spirits and entities.
Ivy, you have such an amazing way of explaining a topic to make it much easier to comprehend. This video was great!

I feel like I've just done this, for the most part, my whole life. But especially in the last five years. Maybe not in terms of expectations of me, but in terms of accepting other people's beliefs and truths and thinking to myself "all of it is real, none of it is real." For the most part, it's not hard for me to hold opposing views in my head. To think of something as true, and untrue. I think what I've had to learn is to put some lines in the sand over time. Because some things, regardless of their truth or untruth, can be more harmful if you treat it as nebulous.
I wonder if this is why magic works for me. Because I believe it completely and not at all.
Wow! I don't know why "paradigm shifting" never clicked and connected for me like it did at the beginning of this video. When you stated it as a shift in the magical practioner's belief it just snapped into place with my own thought of, "wow! I've been doing that since I left home for college!" The fact that you didn't say a shift in the studying of different areas of magic and rather focused on the magical practitioner's shift it just hit home.... because it hasn't been until the past decade that I have considered magick as a possibility for myself. But now.... I see all those shifts in my studies of various different spiritual beliefs and systems to get to where I am now makes me think.... hmmmm.... maybe I AM inherently chaotic magically as I've picked up and set down an array of belief systems and took with me the things that fell into alignment with me and left behind what didn't connect.
Thank you so much for this video.... the cogs of the wheel feel like they've suddenly clicked into a different place. I'm going to have to watch this one again.... maybe more than a few times. I've been letting go of so many things in the past recent months even. Just this shift and amalgamation of various pieces that seem true and this falling away (sometimes with sadness) of things that no longer feel true. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
i had a similar issue with feeling like believing in anything was 'silly', i had to give myself permission free from my family to actually believe what i believe.
In Hook, with Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell. I was teasing my son with that phrase the other day, lol. He likes to make fun of me with my beliefs and we just turn it into a big joke. I do love that bit of the movie. Great discussion on this topic, Ivy. I've been through a lot of shifts in my life and learning about the Indian saints and especially Ramana Maharshi, really helped me to break up some very very stubborn beliefs and helped me to learn meditation and the importance of it.

Love this video! I grew up as a Catholic but it didn't really make any sense to me as a kid (now it does lol) but I found out about Buddhism then later on other religions so removing the dogma and removing the overarching stigma too of "This religion is the best and here is XYZ reasons why"
I am glad that in my childhood I realized that while learning more about religions in my free time to be the omnist, polytheist, soon-to-be interfaith priest. Learning your limitations (if there is any) would strengthen what your beliefs are now and further your knowledge of the other pieces of your life as well

Great topic. I've been working with a therapist, again, who uses IFS and EMDR. It's the same core issue. I'm not good enough. Feeling stuck. Progress is stalled. The paradigm shifting practices you mentioned are worth doing because the time is ripe.
I remember that video, where you talked about a profound shift in your brain and way of thinking. And, I remember when I had that type of experience. It was so liberating and so long ago. Now, I have nothing to lose because all of my attachments have become meaningless. A perfect place to start. Thanks, Ivy.

Added some sacred objects to my workspace and now thay I think about it, I did meditate on concepts, especially after reading.

Same, but for me it was my mother who was the hardcore atheist who's approval I wanted, and believing in anything supernatural/metaphysical was for dumb people, and she put a lot of pride on my intelligence, so I thought if I believed in anything I would be seen as dumb, and thus lose value.

Honestly you are so real for this video. You always hear constantly about people from religious backgrounds trying to leave those behind for magic, but it's so rare to hear it from atheist and rational minds going to magic, which in my opinion is 100 times harder. Not only are you fighting your own mind constantly but socially it is extremely taboo to go from a rational thinker to suspending belief for magic, as this is the thought process that atheists mock religious people for constantly. These tips are so helpful as they are practical and come from the exact mindframe you came from so thank you for sharing!

I have a 25 minute video on brain wave states/altered states of consciousness and a 1.5 hour long video on meditation specifically! ☺️
I have a question...I am doing a decent job at de-conditioning my mind and I am also getting decent results in my magick, but now I started reading Liber Null and Psychonaut, and I feel like I'm doing everything wrong even though I know there's no one right way, I guess....it just seems like the steps to reach Gnosis and trance states are not very ADHD-friendly and it makes sense...because when these were written, we weren't even close to having conversations about neurodivergence! I wonder if you'd ever make a video about ADHD-friendly ways to reach Gnosis and trance states! Even the thought of staying still and focusing on a random object freaks me out because I'm too hyperactive even with the medication! I wonder if I can reach similar states through dancing, yoga, or tai-chi type movements where I'm focusing on my body instead. Also, does anyone know if there are newer books about chaos magick that are more mindful about neurodiversity and gender diversity and all those other things we know about now! Ivy, if you ever write one, I'd be the first in line to pre-order it!

Generally love your work. However, "ego" - even used colloquially, and "persona" are absolutely not the same thing. It's not helpful conflating these two discreet ideas as keeping them separate would actually be more helpful for what you are trying to say.
Interesting perspective! I always welcome perspectives that differ from mine. I have always known "ego" pertaining to all attachments, persona included. Under the "ego" umbrella, we could have multiple subcategories, things that make up someone's persona under one particular subcategory. Not that the technicalities matter too much in the grand scheme of things but I thank you for adding additional perspective!
@@IvyTheOccultistthe Technicalities do matter as they drastically change the inference of what you are saying. if you are using the word persona then you are directly referencing Jung's work. Persona is the social interface of the personality which is made up of collective elements of the individual's history, via which they have sought approval, like their family's and community's expectations, for example. Ego is the conscious centre of the personality. Colloquially "ego" has come to mean narcissistic behaviour, worldview, and to use your phrase "attachments". And Persona has come to mean the mask that you use to defend your core self, either positively or negatively. Colloquially or academically they are very different. It's only if ego identifies with Persona that there is a problem. Which I think is what you mean?
It is important in the grand scheme of things to clarify your terms - IE, just say exactly what they mean to you, otherwise it's super confusing. Having said that I really enjoy your channel and have been a subscriber for a while. Looking forward to the inevitable book deal!
