I really like this version where Chris admitted to Ellen that he and Kim were in love! That brings me a lot of comfort despite all the pain, despair and tragedy. :( :)
I saw the show live in Manila back on April 28, at the Theater at Solaire. Seeing _Kim's Nightmare_ sequence live was legit chilling. I was sitting in the orchestra section when the helicopter appeared onstage, and the light were shining directly in my eyes, and the surround sound was actually deafening, especially as the chopper started flying off.

Let me tell you the way it was Back when I was a different man Back when I didn't have a clue who I am The feelings locked behind a dam That kept me there in Vietnam There in the shambles of a war I found what I was looking for Saigon was crazed, but she was real And for one moment, I could feel I saw a world I never knew And through her eyes I suffered too In spite of all the things that were I started to believe in her So I wanted to save her, protect her Christ, I'm American, how could I fail to do good? Every lead had a song that dealt with “the power of the image” where they imagined how things would be, but had to deal with the aftermath when the image doesn’t match reality. Movie in my mind, Why God Why, Bui Doi, American Dream, and Ellen’s song was Now that I’ve seen her. Maybe might be a pretty song, but it doesn’t with the overall theme of the show.
THIS comment! I understood the change from the OG song, “Her or Me.” It softens Ellen. This new song, like the one they wrote for the Les Mis movie, is SO out of place. Schoenberg and Boublil’s use of leitmotifs is what makes these two musical amazing. The two “new” songs have no melodies or chord progressions that match the rest of the show. I feel pulled out of the story. Still brilliant show! My second fav since 1989.
THIS Ellen is a SO much more likable than the 25th anniv ellen....way more charisma, voice, and performance......i actually have sympathy and soften for this on......the other Ellen, i'm afraid i hated her. and then.Chris's performance in this is more likable too... i'm glad i got to see this version......thanks so much!! Eva and this engineer OWN these parts, as always. :).
@@antheiheiantoh, thank you for asking! both interpretations of the character bring a really (well done) interesting change to how i emotionally connected to/learned from the story. the way the other actress portrayed the character, seemed a quality interpretation of how i have seen many other women in these sucky situations (understandably, but still) i saw that ellen to be of little compassion, no empathy, and ignorant entitlement, victimized. and to think that Chris wanted to be with that Ellen, with whom i felt that "arrogant, ignorant american" stereotype guilt? i had to change my understanding of the character of Chris...his choosing such a person. but THIS actress played the character with empathy, sensitivity, and humility, i didn't see her feeling victim, but just trying to understand things as best she could. ....but i love each time i watch these different portrayals of the characters, being a student of survival psychology, how people gaslight themselves to believe what helps them to best survive. kim's clinging to chris as a godlike savior, chris getting so enmeshed in his own "americans are the superheroes of the world" the engineer's desperation and distrust causing the giant blunder of sending kim to chris, blindly sabotaging himself in that illogical desperation... so much depth to the works of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. and with great actors and directors....it's so cool to see how the story changes even when the dialog is mostly the same. :D
I was wondering who it was! Then I realized I recognized her voice! Katie Rose Clarke! One of my FAVORITE Glindas and performers! She always brings incredible emotion to the roles I’ve been lucky enough to see her in!
Bloody Brilliant! Thanks for preserving this performance. One question… Eva’s acting seems so wooden and detached. Was this possibly an off night for her? Vocally, she nails it. I especially noticed during “Please.” Kim is typically overcome with emotions with the news Chris is there. (Going off Lea’s performance of course) Eva seems mechanical... 🤷🏻♂️
@@allnightMia hello! There is a current Asian tour playing. They're going to Taiwan in June/July ang Singapre in August/September. If you're interested.
The "Maybe" song is very weak - and very reminiscent of "Autumn" in the Titanic musical. Note to the next revival: Bring back "Now that I've seen her". The whole of the hotel section is off the rails. They talk a lot, having seemingly forgotten it's a sung-through musical. I do understand there have always been problems with this part of the story. Ellen is a thankless role and her dialogue is ridiculously rushed in places (e.g. "Kim was here. The one who had to tell her was me.") However these changes do not improve matters. Quite the reverse.
Wait wait wait… they replaced “now that I’ve seen her”/“it’s her or me” with… THAT??! If the actress playing Ellen is reading this, damn girl I’m sorry they did you dirty like this. U still slay tho sis
Eva's sun and moon reprise will always be untouchable :(

In my opinion Now That I've Seen Her is a much better song and suits this scene so much more.
Completely agree, it’s also just a better song overall

Possibly. She was better in london
