While the guests were milling about, my father, the host, asked if he could request her to sing something. Lea was gracious and said "Sure!" Then I piped up and asked if she could sing "On My Own". Just her and the producer who played piano. Her control was (and is) so consistent it's amazing. Her voice just enveloped the room and I cried like a baby. Rachelle belts out the long ascending lines, the story contrast between "children laugh all day" and "all that [she's] been through." THEN, she doesn't take a breath between the long ascending "true...dream," during the ritard, everything hammering home the drama one after the other, as does the next key change at "dream," then she rips out "the dream I long to find" at 2:28 with her high E descending riff on "find," then the french horn descending phrase from the same high E during her great vibrato at the long FIND at she looks up dreaming. The descending, dramatic, emotional three notes, and also the peak of the story arc at what she dreams to FIND. The audience and Lea literally gasp at it. Later, Lea breathes before her high "dream," and it works almost as well.
The really important technique that Lea has is you NEVER hear her breathe. Yes, she pauses, before "Dream", as you said, inhales for a split second, but you never hear her inhale. It's that fast and that clean. That to me , is just one of the many reasons that set Lea apart.
Rachelle's a belter (though she mixed it here) and has the wider range but Lea - in a very rare (at least to me) occasion - she belted a high E in full chest with amazing vibrato when normally she mixes the high notes. I'm just floored. Rachelle was good but Lea still holds the throne.
Wow.... I am amaze by rachelle but when lea sing the chorus i cant help but cry. I feel all her emotion... She convey the feelings of her character so well.... She really is the ORIGINAL "MISS SAIGON"...
When I heard the high notes of Rachel, I was blown up,,,, and when Lea did, I realized that no one beats her, it's perfect, she got all the notes clearly and very pleasant to ears❤️❤️❤️, she's really really the best for me🤗🤗🤗
While reading the comments, I noticed that mostly foreigners are the ones who appreciate their talents without prejudice while their countrymen keep on comparing the two.
Great to see this again. Thank you! So proud of these two. If I'm not mistaken, it was Lea who prodded and convinced Rachelle to audition for Miss Saigon after seeing her as Ariel in the Manila production of The Little Mermaid.
Hauntingly beautiful and completely stunning. This is different than Whitney, Barbra, or Celine.they’re great in their own way. But this is a different experience. It hits you in your soul and brings you to tears.
Wow Lea! That voice. That voice. Killed it. Destroyed it. This is one of the best duets ever. Lea is no doubt one of the best voices in the world. Period.
Ugh! Lea!!!! Clarity, Technique no throat straining! Perfect pitch! She's belting but she's taking care of her voice no wonder she sounds still the way before. Uh nope way better. Living legend! 💕😍
This will always be my favorite moment during the gala and my favorite duet of all time. Rachelle slayed it and Lea belted it out like the queen that she is! 😭😭😭
I have seen this clip so many times. Every time, I just am in aww. Both Lean Rachelle Ann have incredible voices. They are unique. Different from pop music. Made for Broadway. I had the the privilege of hearing Lea sing in "The Colours of Christmas" in San Francisco several years ago. I went by myself and had a seat at Davies Symphony Hall. I was seated above the stage just where the performers would enter and exit the stage. The other big name that night was Ben Vereen. Anyway.....it was Lea's turn to shine. She sang "Reflection" from Mulan. I was literally a ball of tears. The woman seated a few seats away from me just touched my arm and said it will be ok. That is what she does.
Rachel was singing with obvious emotions, but there would always be something with Miss Lea that's capturing and captivating and so moving that I always wanted to cry everytime.. and one important thing: Miss Lea's low notes always get me.. like it's much power-packed with a lot of emotions contained and it's heartbreaking.. I hope I'm not overstating this

Rachelle's a belter (though she mixed it here) and has the wider range but Lea - in a very rare (at least to me) occasion - she belted a high E in full chest with amazing vibrato when normally she mixes the high notes. I'm just floored. Rachelle was good but Lea still holds the throne.
You can hear Leah's expirience through her voice how pro she was.rachell is amazing but Leah is on a different level.
Look at Lea's reaction 2:32!! Proud to be Pinoy!
Anthoniño Bartolay yey! Amazing rachel ann go! And lea salonga
I still think Lea IS Miss Saigon, no one else
No one compares to Lea. She is so effortless.
Wow.... I am amaze by rachelle but when lea sing the chorus i cant help but cry. I feel all her emotion... She convey the feelings of her character so well.... She really is the ORIGINAL "MISS SAIGON"...
I know no one can beat Lea. But I think Rachel is the best fit among Filipino singers.
Elaine S hintayin mo lumaki si esang
Dude... you should hear Lani Misalucha
When I heard the high notes of Rachel, I was blown up,,,, and when Lea did, I realized that no one beats her, it's perfect, she got all the notes clearly and very pleasant to ears❤️❤️❤️, she's really really the best for me🤗🤗🤗

Rachel has a very wide range. Kudos to lea when she belted E5. I know lea is not a belter but she slayed it.
Lea's reactions to rachelle's hitting the top note is very gracious!
NOTHING IS GREATER THAN THE ORIGINAL but yes, she slayed it... Lea, still exudes experience and class... whewwww!!
2024 anyone? 🖐️🥰
Lea’s voice gives me major goosebumps. She is undoubtedly one of the best singers in the World.

Ang galing galing nila. Rachel has improved a lot and Lea doesn't seem to grow old.
Lea salonga's version of 'dream,' at 3:56 to 4:00...yan ang consistent ng thickness of voice.
Watching this in 2024! I just watched miss saigon in solaire. Dafeelssss.
While reading the comments, I noticed that mostly foreigners are the ones who appreciate their talents without prejudice while their countrymen keep on comparing the two.
Agree
Rachel is equally good when it comes to voice and emotions but no one else come close to Lea’s clarity. ❤️

Singing on the same stage with The Lea Salonga is a lethal risk. Hats off to Rachelle for being so brave.
Lea knows how to praise Rachel as she hits the notes. Sign of a classy artist and of her humility! God bless you always Ms Lea!!!

Rachelle: Something between Broadway and pop
Lea: Pure Broadway
okay so, today is March 13, 2021, watching this perfect collab T.T
Same. Repeatedly.
😂🤣umay
sayang, mahirap makahanap ng club na ganito sa pinas T.T
Wow Lea! That voice. That voice. Killed it. Destroyed it. This is one of the best duets ever. Lea is no doubt one of the best voices in the world. Period.

this is the first time I've ever heard this song and I'm crying so hard :")
The best Kim and Gigi they ever had 😍😍
Ugh! Lea!!!! Clarity, Technique no throat straining! Perfect pitch! She's belting but she's taking care of her voice no wonder she sounds still the way before. Uh nope way better. Living legend! 💕😍
One of the most powerful performances of singing to perfection I’ve seen.
It’s 2024! who else are watching this? :)
June 2019 yet still loving it!!!
I'm in
That is one of the best duets of all time. It doesn't even matter what the song is. This is perfection.
I come back to this every year just to feel something
This will always be my favorite moment during the gala and my favorite duet of all time. Rachelle slayed it and Lea belted it out like the queen that she is! 😭😭😭
LEA is THE KIM...no doubt. so many actresses playing Kim, But LEA will Always be the best.
Who's wd me in 2020?
Rachel was singing with obvious emotions, but there would always be something with Miss Lea that's capturing and captivating and so moving that I always wanted to cry everytime..
and one important thing: Miss Lea's low notes always get me.. like it's much power-packed with a lot of emotions contained and it's heartbreaking.. I hope I'm not overstating this
No you’re not , you explicitly stated the fact .
They’re singing and acting at the same time.. soo proud! 😘😭
They are not nice, they're mostly noise
They swear like men, they screw like boys
I know there's nothing in their hearts
But every time I take one in my arms
It starts:
The movie in my mind
The dream they leave behind
A scene I can't erase
And in a strong GI's embrace
Flee this life
Flee this place
The movie plays and plays
I'll find my true romance
He takes me to a place
Where I don't have to dance
Our children laugh all-day
But all that I've been through
Can't make my dream come true
Dream
The dream I long to find
The movie in my mind
I will not cry, I will not think
I'll do my dance, I'll make them drink
When I make love, it won't be me
And if they hurt me, I'll just close my eyes
And see (they are not nice, they're mostly noise)
The movie in my mind (they kill like men, they die like boys)
The dream that fills my head (they give their cash, they keep their hearts)
A man who will not kill (but every night again it starts)
Who'll fight for me instead
He'll keep the fear at bay
So no one comes at night
To blow the dream away
Dream
The dream I have to find
The movie in my mind
And in a strong GI's embrace
Flee this life
Flee this place
A world that's far away
Where life is not unkind
The movie in my mind
When she said, "God! Damn it, that woman is so good!", like she's so proud of Rachel ❤️
Wait until Lea said, BACK TO ME!
June 2019 who's still watching? We miss you Rachelle Ann Go 😍
Omg Lea looked like so much like proud mom or senior looking so proud when Raechell hit that high note..
They are two beautiful and incredibly talented women and I love seeing them together performing 💓💓💓💓
You cannot really spell clear without LEA! Just wow!!! They are both so amazing!!!
I need lea’s THIS IS THE HOUR!

A scene I can't erase
And in a strong GI's embrace
Flee this life

The screen before me fills
He takes me to New York
He gives me dollar bills
Our children laugh all day
And eat too much ice cream
And life is like a dream
Dream
The dream I long to find
The movie in my mind
I will not cry, I will not think
I'll do my dance, I'll make them drink

these lyrics are old. it's from the original production. the one they're singing have slight changes
Louis Ben-Joseph yup actually i noticed it also😅
At first i thought you wrote a whole essay dissing both lea and rachelle ahhaha
Bravo! To two of you!
@@Aly-bd8jo Why did they change the lyrics? These original lyrics are so moving.
Oohhhh! Lea still has the emotions, diction and voice clarity..and yes no subtitle is needed when she sings! Despite of her success she's still a fan, love her look of admiration to Rachelle. She let Rachelle have her own shine. Walang sapawan👏👏👌❤❤
People from the Philippines are so talented. ❤️
Can’t believe this was actually live! Their voices are amazing and so clear. Beautiful talents ✨✨
rachelle really looks like a vietnamese.
I cried with joy of seeing Lea's reaction when Rachel Ann Go hits the notes. Lea is the best veteran Miss Saigon ever...I could feel miss Lea's supports to Miss Rachel as one of the best miss Saigon also😍😍😍
I cannot stop watching this. Lea's facial expressions and singing are everything. So much emotion.
The face lea makes when Rachelle does the added little run in the chorus is everything
May magic talaga sa pagkanta ni Lea, para syang nag sstory telling, na vivisualize mo at nararamdaman mo yung kinakanta nya. Galing! Sobrang magical!
Ang galing din ni Rachelle!
Filipino dominated the Broadway and Theatre industry internationaly and this is what i have to say they owe it to Lea Salonga not only a Broadway Legend but a Disney Icon! I say what I say!
She's a Disney Legend!
When Lea sang "dream" I felt for a moment that I was listening once again to her 29-year-old self performing in Manila 😭😭😭
Lea is The legendary Lea Salonga and Rachelle is the nextgen.
