The cable on our 2013 Sienna Driver side door snapped this morning... found this video, called the dealer and for about $50ish, picked up the cable today after work and did this repair in a little over an hour. Thanks for the video!! Well done and saved me some $$$.
Thanks for the help. Fixed it in about 2 hours. This was a great video. I was dumb and forgot to turn off the door lights. Had to jump the car after. Don’t be me, take out the keys after rolling down the window and turn off the door lights. 😅
Best video on the internet!! My wife sent me a picture of the broken cable hanging out the back of the rear window, and instantly knew what was wrong. I didn't even go to the dealer, I went to RUclips. Sure enough, Mike's Garage Shop had the answer! And with $75 in parts and 2 hours of my time, I fixed the broken cable! Super simple, and there was only 6 bolts to undo! Thanks for the great video!! Make sure to buy the rear trim piece, because yes it's true - it will snap trying to take it out.
Can’t thank you enough for this DIY video. Ordered the part of Amazon, got that in about two days. Used the video to complete the repair in under two hours. Saved me about $1000. Plus, keeps the old 2012 Toyota Sienna SE racking up the miles, about to surpass 200,000 miles this summer!
Thanks so much for the informative video. I was able to fix the broken cable on my 2014 Sienna. You were absolutely correct on the rail molding piece breaking! I tried my best and it broke. I used your link to get my replacement.
@@babyshaya I assume you are talking about the white plastic piece on the new pulley? If that’s the case, leave that plastic piece on. It totally looks like a protective piece but it’s not, it’s part of the pulley. Leave it on. Good work!
@@salbass7567 thanks bro. I feel better now. There are others on RUclips that took it off. When I put it in, it clicked perfectly so I assumed it was perfect.
I took some time to brainstorm the rail molding not to break and found a solution. Just pull the bottom out just enough to finagle the anchor out and the new one in. Didn't even need to unbolt the anchor point let alone take off the panel completely
This video was excellent. I'm a mom of three young kids and I've never worked on a vehicle before. My van door broke, I found this video later that day and ordered the parts from the description box. and I was able to install the new cable in about an hour over nap time. Thank you!
Just finished mine. It was super dusty inside, but otherwise not a problem. Much easier and cheaper than my previous 2004 Sienna. Of course I had paused the video right before you said, "Don't forget to plug in the cable." Thanks for the clear, concise video!
Thank you so much for this video! Dealership wanted to charge $100 to do a diagnostic off the bat, THEN proceed w the fixing charges! Bought the part for just over $100, and 1.5 hrs later have a working automatic door again! One thing I would mention is my door would NOT open! I had to force it a little and cut the cable as it was causing it not to open! Thanks again!!
Mine snapped yesterday. Gonna order me a new one and tackle it. Thanks 👍 UPDATE: So I bought the cable from Toyota and started to follow these directions up until I started the back panel for the rear anchor. I figured out a way to not break the panel and not even a need to take anything out! All I did was not put in the front anchor so that I'd have some slack, pull pulled the door back, unbuckle the lower part of the panel only. The anchor cable would need to be cut, pull the lower part of the panel just enough to get your fingers into it, use a screwdriver to push the one side of the clip, fenagle your finger and push out the anchor. It's just enough empty space to hold the anchor to pull out. Since you have tons of slack on the new anchor, you slide it up, fanagle it back into the empty area on the left, then slide it into the anchor by pulling the cable. I was so happy I didn't need to break the panel. You can put the front anchor back in because there's some spring slack but I didn't want to damage anything just in case. I used my 10mm to release the front anchor holder since those two bolts are ridiculously exposed, locked the anchor in, held it in place to bolt it back on. That's it! I really hope this makes it so much easier for everyone else!
YES! I followed this step by step today. The dealership wanted over $500 to fix my door I did it myself for about $65.00. I also fixed my HVAC fan for $149.00. All in all, took about 3 hours to complete both.
Mike, you are saving folks a bunch of money with these tutorials. Thank you man, and you would be rewarded in some way for your openness to help others.
thanks a ton for this video! We had a 2015 sienna with a snapped cable. The dealership said it was covered under some sort of bulletin, but I opted just to replace it myself and not have the downtime of 2 days. Part was $90 CAD and it took me 45 mins to replace. One tip: The rear window trim piece can just bent bent back - plug it in first when you have slack in the cable, and then you don't need to remove the clip or the trim. Then plug the door side in. Def worth having a small or low profile ratchet, or an angled elbow to get into the tight spots.
Thanks Mike! This helped me fix my door on the driver’s side 2015 Sienna. I managed to not break the trim piece. I found that if you support it from both sides while prying it out it didn’t break. DID break the clip but I had spares.
After seeing this video I decided to order the cable and attempt to replace it. It was not fun, but with your video I was able to get it all apart and it works great. Thank you very much. (04 Sienna passenger side cable)
Just found your video and just subscribed to your channel. I’m going to fix my wife’s 2011 Sienna passenger door. And thanks for posting all the tools and materials I need from Amazon. I will order them here shortly. Again, thank you for taking the time to film and edit and post this. And your son is luck to learn from his dad how to fix stuff!!
Great write-up! Our cables snapped when my kids tried to open the doors during a winter storm when the entire van was a giant ice cube. Door panels can be easily removed with the 2nd row seats pushed all the way toward the rear. Get the little trim pieces that hide the rear cable connections. They break during removal.
Worked great! Thanks for showing! Took about 2 hours start to finish. The last part you unscrewed below the window is actually not necessary if you hold off attaching the cable inside the door. Was also able to get the window piece off without snapping the plastic. Happy it worked so well! Thanks again!
Ours just broke today. Great video and detail. Thanks so much. I'll be referring to your video when I get to doing the replacement. Oh, and the boy did a great job. Lol
Thank you! I found I only needed to pry the rear end moulding up to remove the back anchor instead of removing/breaking it. Also helped when I started with the rear anchor. I didn’t need to remove the bracket that way. End with the 90° anchor since there’s just enough slack to snap it into place as the last step. Thank you for walking me through the steps without music and fluff!
very helpful. you got me out of a jam. Wife and I were in the woods walking the dogs. she opened the same door and dang sure it wouldn't close. I could hear bending and stretching. I cut the cable just to get the door to shut. gonna go ahead and get the new cable and replace it. Again,.....Thanks a bunch.

I had mine done under warranty long time ago. It broke again. Now I know. Did you buy OEM or aftermarket parts? Did you clean then lube it with white lithium grease?
I bought OEM parts. I’ll leave the choice of cleaning and lubricating up to you.
Always buy OEM parts, yes clean then use lithium grease, it works the best for rods and cables..

I would imagine that a dealer or mechanic would want close to $1,000 for this repair.
$700 with tax at dealer.

Please tell me, my door opens automatically, but doesn’t want to close. It’s as if something is holding it and doesn’t allow it to close automatically, so you have to close it manually. What could be the problem? Has anyone encountered such a problem?
For how easy it is to take the door panel off, do that and see if there’s anything getting stuck in the way.
Doesn't do any good if the door doesn't open.
I just pay 302 dollars for my van door😢😢😢
Always check RUclips first!
And please remove the baby from the van.
