  • Frusciante's signal chain in the Unlimited Love era is a heavily discussed and debated topic. A lot of misconceptions and assumptions are being made so in today's video I go over what we can say is without a doubt happening, what we cannot, as well as giving my insight and a final educated guess at John's full signal chain.

    Frusciante has been using his wh10 after drives for three decades now. You just need to listen to how the wah sounds whenever there is some fuzz or dist, it just sounds exactly how a wah or filter sounds processing a dirty signal, instead of applying more harmonics to a filtered sound (which gives the more traditional wah sound, that actually sounds horrible when using a wh10). The Give it Away solo in Howard Stern totally gives away his wah is, as has almost always been, after all his drives. Thats how he created his signature sound for crazy yelling/crying guitar tone. The CE1 has an infamous preamp that works as a sort of compressor/limiter as it has low headroom, allowing him to just push all his volumes (although he doesnt seem to be doing so for this new era, so he has more dynamics) to max so he hits his headroom and just adds more compression and sustain without getting more volume, thats also how he manages to get such a singing and long sustain too.

      That is totally true. I never had the opportunity to play on CE-1 but talking about the WH-10, it always sounds like a booster and a Wah who's pushing all the drives to de top on middle frequency. I love that boosting on the solos

      Interesting analysis. On another note I’ve always heard he uses the WH10 because it’s range from heel to toe..
      I’ve always hated how my cry baby had such a limited range, so I cut the rubber buffer under the heel to give a bit more range and it actually worked.. not as much as the WH10 but I was happy with the results

      @@matthewhackett3429 I have a wh10 v2 and a v3, plus a Vox v847. I dont feel there is too much of a difference in the actual feel of the hardware, but I do find both wh10 more aggresive as they have a different resonance peak and response, which allows to get those crazy screaming soloes. I do find the Vox to be more funky indeed, in a more classical clean funk kind of vibe. Both are great and can do the Frusciante kinda thing when placed after distortion or fuzz, but the wh10 just seems to have that extra mojo that makes things a bit more expressive.

    Just FYI, unlike the vast majority of modern pedals the input on a CE-1 (if looking at it from the top down) is all the way to the left of the pedal and the stereo outs are right next to it. So the input is the jack** with the "pancake" plug style cable running into it. So on the "Stern"/promo board he's definitely running the MXR Reverb _before_ the CE-1 and then the outs of the CE-1 to the two amps. Whether or not it's set up that way on the "big board" remains to be seen.

    This was the video i was waiting for! Thanks. From my own trying i think the order is SD-2, DS-2, Fuzz

    I’ve always heard the WH 10 was after all of the dirt. And I’ve always heard that the CE 1 is as much used for it’s preamp as it is for the chorus/vibrato. And also acting as somewhat of a limiter for everything that runs into it, so it would make sense that the reverbs are at the end? 🤷🏻‍♂️

      As I can see on the cable config the CE-1 is last.

    Chasing Frusciante tone is like Ahab going after Moby Dick. First and foremost: since the first time you heard him, his signal was hitting a solid gold recording or live sound rig. You have NO IDEA the level of processing Rubin and others have applied, what desk, what preamps, what smell was in the air that day, how his fingers and pick hit the strings. You can use every single pedal, and the next day he changes one, and you’re out again. Having said all that, much respect for your fandom and meticulous searching, and if watching inspires people to find better pedals and improve their own sound, then good on ya.

    Problem I think is. WH10 and CE 1. On my Pedalboard, the WH 10 is more quiet when it's before the CE1. Anyone have the same problem?

    We’ve seen major changes in the pedal world since JF left the band 12 years ago. I’m a bit disappointed that he hasn’t upgraded his board and adopted some ambient Ed O’Brien like subtle atmospheric techniques. We know he runs his guitar through synths when recording and uses moogfoogers for his rack unit live to get those synth sounds.. the new album sounds great but I was hoping to see a major change to his board.. given how exponentially the pedal world has evolved since stadium arcadium. I still think we haven’t seen anything.. there’s bound to be a rack unit his guitar tech triggers .. hopefully we’ll get a proper rig rundown at some point 🤞

      That's because the pros have little to no use for the newer fancy pancy boutique pedals. Those are mostly used by bedroom players. Touring musicians need reliable gear that can easily be replaced.

    it's funny to me how unkempt his pedalboard is. definitely not a believer in cable management lol

    really great to see his settings. picked up a variac fuzz, and had an sd-1 for a while but now using it as the sole OD. i tried stacking the ds2-sd-1-variac and it didn't work out for me, in that order or with sd-1 at the end. maybe if the sd-1 is first in chain. but ds2-variac is great, a lot easier and cleaner to stack than the fuzzrite, but not going to get that same insane high mids sound with the variac over the fuzzrite

    Hmm, looking at the little pedalboard from the rooftop… I can see that Cable going to the input of the CE-1 from the output of the Reverb / Carbon Copy pedal. The cable jacks seem identical so I think that the CE-1 is now the very last one in the chain & splitting the signal!

      You're 100% right. There's one angle too I can see the NS-2 going into the first Reverb. It's for sure WH10 last in the loop, then the Reverbs, then the CE-1!

  • @jaywilldoit

    Could you help me understand why the CE-1 would be at the end of the chain and especially after the reverb? Many thanks.

      Because it splits his signal to his two amps

    At least on his large live board John continues to use a Micro Amp. In the past he seems to have changed the position of this clean-sound-better-maker in his chain quite a few times. Does anyone know where it is integrated in his chain now and for which purpose? It is always on?

  • @dckstrat90
    @dckstrat90 2 года назад

    the wah is more than likely after the drives and separate from the NS loop

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  2 года назад

      You can see one angle where the NS-2 goes directly into the Reverb actually, which I saw upon further investigation post making this video. So it looks like it's in the loop!

    There is some kind of box underneath the tier in the Howard stern board pics. I’m wondering what it is. Some kind of routing device ?

    • @LKiman

      Nono. It will be a multi power supply for each pedal. In the past he prefers to use batteries instead of a central power supply (which was not very environmentally friendly). xD

    I have the wh10v2. It’s sad because i really like its sound and feel but it sucks my tone so bad that i significantly lost my high tone. I really want to use it but i don’t want to sacrifice the overall tone just to use it occasionally 😢. If someone have a good solution for this, please let me know.

    Frusciante has always put his wah after fuzz. Anyone who has a DS-2 and any wah pedal really can very deduce that just by trying it out themselves. Wah before DS-2 sounds very different to wah after fuzz. So that's a no-brainer. Secondly, in the last pedalboard picture, you can quite confidently assume that the MXR reverb is after the CE-1 because the patch cable jack on the line out of the CE-1 and the line in on the MXR Reverb are the same. So that was another mistake in this video.

    Traditionally Frusciante runs his fuzz after the ds2. So i'd assume you're right in the signal path being the sd2, ds2, fuzz. Also in my many experiments of running fuzz pedals into the ds2 (both ds2 and fuzz on) has resulted in a very fizzy and nasty sound, so yeah lol

    • @kalkidasofficial
      @kalkidasofficial 2 года назад

      Fuzz after sd2 and ds2? Are you sure? I think fuzz is first and that’s the reason he is using the ns2 to avoid the fizzy sound.
