    Kate I think anything that speaks to your soul will be the perfect choice. My Mamo, maternal grandma, made all types of quilts mostly by hand. My favorites were the crazy quilts she loving made from sentimental pieces of fabrics. She told stories about each piece that I can still hear in my mind. She would recover each place that became tattered. She taught me to sew, crochet & many other things. Her & my Poppy, maternal grandpa, were the best parents I could of had! So this journey you are taking us on is wonderful! Thank you tons! ❤xo💜xo💙xo💛xo💖xo💚

    Now I am thinking a creamy white and then a red border of the backing color around the edges. Ha! I had a dream that you came to California for a surprise visit. I was happy to see you but was a bit nervous as I always am when company comes to stay. But then I realized I could relax because you wouldn't be bothered by cats, and fur, and all that is involved with living with furry creatures. What a relief! I do like It with the simple white to make the squares pop a little but I really like the pink too. I think a narrow sashing is best for this quilt. Maybe the polka dots for the binding?

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  6 лет назад +1

      I'm glad you agree about the narrower binding Robin, do you think 1.5" (finished) would be too narrow? that is what i am considering - and yes - dotty binding would be great! xxx Thank you

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts 6 лет назад +1

      The Last Homely House East of the Sea I think 1.5” would be fine. I’ve used that width a few times. I’ve come to prefer a narrow sashing. With your squares being scrappy you may have to press your seams to the sashing but otherwise It should work fine. You could follow the rules and try sewing the sashing to a couple blocks and see if you like it or be reckless and just go for It. I think I might be able to guess your choice 😉.

      @@rsislandcrafts When I made my son's Crown Royal quilt, it had narrow sashing and cornerstones. I attached the top sashing, then the right cornerstone already sewn to the sashing that ran down the right side of the block, as I finished the blocks and pinned them up on the design wall. So easy! Then I sewed the horizontal rows together, and assembled the quilt as usual. No long strips of sashing and cornerstones to connect to the already-assembled rows. It worked like a charm, which was exactly what I needed, as it was a rush job. My son was in Iraq, flying his Blackhawk, and my daughter-in-law Donna and I had discussed making a quilt for him for Christmas. She dropped by one day near the end of October, close to my birthday, and dropped the bomb: "You know, if WE are going to make Don a quilt for Christmas, it has to be mailed by December 10!" Aaagghhh! Because of course, the Crown Royal bags were still in bag form and the rest of the quilt was just an idea, at that point. I enlisted my DIL, granddaughter and a niece to cut the bags apart, then placed them in lingerie bags and into the washer to pre-shrink. Those bags are made of FLANNEL, and the cut bag fronts came out of the dryer rolled up into tight, stringy balls - it took a full 8 hours to trim and press enough of them for his quilt top. I decided to place the bag front in the center of a wonky star made of blue, green, and a few purple stars, so it was come home from work, hang coat on the back of my chair at the sewing machine, and get busy sewing. My machine quilter usually stops taking work in at the beginning of November to do her own holiday sewing, but I prostrated myself on her good graces and she agreed to quilt it for me. I was literally finishing up the last few stitches attaching the binding when Donna showed up with the box to mail it overseas. We made it! He got it for Christmas, and said it was a welcome break from all the desert camouflage they were surrounded with over there. All his buddies had quilt envy, wanted to make off with his quilt. I didn't get a photo of it until he got back home with it, such a panic getting it into the mail on time...

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts 6 лет назад +1

      @@judithjanes5738 Judith please thank your son and his family for their service. Shipping overseas for the holidays sure does put a bit of a rush to our projects. Happy to hear his quilt made it in time for Christmas. That was a brilliant way to handle the sashing. Those long strips of sashing can be a pain to keep straight and lined up properly. With your way it's just sewing a bunch of blocks together. I can picture what those bags looked like fresh out of the dryer. Ouch! If you ever decide to make another Crown Royal quilt I guess you've learned the hard way to wash the bags before cutting them apart. I'm sure you were frustrated and heart broken when you saw the "mess". My Grandfather drank many bottles of Crown through the years and I've made a few projects from some of the bags. It's fun to look at all the Crown projects over on Pinterest.

    I loved the idea of sewing into four patches, so much that I am rethinking how I am doing a Christmas string quilt. The rectangles are 6 x 8 cut, and I will need 81 blocks to get a nice throw. I was going to sash with green each individual rectangle. I was not look keen forward to it, I’m going to borrow your word of too fiddly. So I am in the process of soil for rectangles together, and Sashing that. Not quite so fiddly and I’m really liking it. As you said, the seam lines do break it up really nicely. Wish I could send you a picture of how it’s turning out. Love love love thank you thank you thank you for your sharing your different ideas. I loved this video. Not being a quilter, I hesitated to comment but can't help myself. I love the white between the blocks. I wonder if the same size white border as between blocks surrounding the quilt and then the white with red polka dots outside of that in at least twice the width would look good. It would tie in the red backing into the white borders. Add a few of the corner blocks in pink and red, but not every corner. This quilting is fun....lol!!!!!

    I love the red or the pink with cornerstones of the one you didn't use for sashing. It'd be so warm and with red sashing, so rich, but still giving your eyes some resting space and also clearly dividing the pieced blocks. White was my initial thought, but it always is!

    I’m watching this July 26, 2019. I normally love reading all the comments but this video has 330 and as Kate would say “ that’s not gonna happen !”
    It’s a beautiful scrappy quilt. I’m actually working with scraps just now and it’s way, way harder than I ever thought it would be. Next scrap project I’m going to implement the paper bag method. You put all your scraps in a paper bag and mix them all up. Then randomly grab from the bag and sew together. The only time you’re allowed to throw the piece back is if you pick two fabrics that are the same.
    Thank you for the links to Robin’s site. I’m headed over there to see what else I can learn about scrap quilts 😊
