The best version is the one he did a couple of years ago for the BBC Radio 2 live at Home series during covid. The voice is the same and what little he has lost in range is long made up for by more seasoning and emotion. Tom's voice is a gift from the gods and he has taken good care of it. ruclips.net/video/UpomzwEN3cs/видео.html

Curiously this record is an incredible British favourite track at, pretty much, all kinds of celebrations. Once it starts everyone gets on the dance floor, holds hands and sings loudly. You wouldn't thing a song about a murder would be so popular, but it is. Brings us all together for a good old sing song.

Have you heard, Tom Jones is a knight, so it’s Sir Tom Jones. I saw Him live at an outdoor venue and you could hear him warming up from the parking lot and he was singing this song. Fabulous show, he’s such a performer! In fact, he had his own TV show Tom Jones back in 70s, great artists on there like Janis Joplin and CSN. Suggestion for next song - please check out his dance moves the live performance of Treat Her Right! 🔥

And if you do, I recommend, "Turn of The Century. " One of the most beautiful songs or ballets Yes has ever composed. Yes, there is a mariachi influence in this song. I don't know if it's intentional, but it's there. It's the trumpets.
Murder ballads are not a big genre but they are captivating stories to listen to. The other one that I have heard that comes to mind, and I'm sure there are others I've heard, is "El Paso" by Marty Robbins (which also has a mariachi influence) and "The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence. Both are good songs you should check out.

I've been trying for, gosh, probably 50 years to figure out just what it is about Tom Jones' voice that just moves me right down to my soul, not to mention other more earthly bits...There's the power in the way he belts, the conviction in the broken "cry", the unabashedly seductive tone. But, to be honest, I think there are other singers who can pull off all those elements. I keep coming back to something about his vibrato, which somehow just has the perfect, well, vibration, for want of a better word, to bring everything together in a way that cuts through all your defenses and leaves you helpless.

Grew up in the Working Mens Club era in UK where everyone would go on a Saturday night to listen to a 'turn', have a game of bingo, drink lots of beer and dance to a DJ.
Delilah was so popular and everyone in the club would, in unison, go "Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha" after the "She stood there laughing" I still do it today and get some very strange looks.

    Yes mariachi band..🔥🔥🔥...
Sir Tom could emote.. convey feelings..so well...murder ballads were a much more common thing in the past..the traveling Bards who sang the news often elaborated to make their skills remembered...even Johnny Cash has one..Folsom Prison Blues..I recommend Home Free's redition 😁...
You should watch his performances..this one as you mentioned was also recorded live on the Ed Sullivan Show..same with I'll Never Fall In Love Again and the one you missed I Who Have Nothing...the tension and the direction subtly given to the band only serve to make the songs more enjoyable...

There’s no arguing Sir Tom Jones’ talent, but the message of the song hits me differently today than it did the 1st time I heard it on the radio. I’m now more aware of how many men kill their SO. So when Garth Brooks came out with Thunder Rolls with the roles reversed, I was pretty happy with it. But you know, the radio wouldn’t let him include that last verse & he could only sing it in concert. The message I rec’d is it’s okay for a man to kill a woman but not for her to kill her man (socially speaking, not legally of course). 🤷‍♀️

The live perfomance mention on the show is on You Tube and worth checking, even if just for your own pleasure as it has a live ochestra with him and he sounds amazing.
