    I'm 50/50 on the PowerPLAY - on the one hand I can get 60fps and power my goggles, but on the other, the deinterlacing technique is basic, just like every single 60fps DVR on the market it produces footage that jumps up/down by a single pixel (try watching virtually any 60fps DVR footage back at 0.25 speed on RUclips). I can re-process PowerPLAY footage and 'properly' deinterlace it, but the picture quality isn't as good as the original source since the PowerPLAY crops the edges and scales the image back up, which introduces some (unwanted) artificial sharpening.
    I've been working with captured analogue video for decades now, and have equipment to capture full resolution interlaced footage, which I can then use a computer to 'properly' deinterlace, which enables me to spot the flaws of the 60fps DVRs from practically a mile off.
    The 18500 cells were pretty poor so I redesigned & 3D printed a new back for the PowerPLAY so it can hold 18650 cells, see Thingiverse 4080213 and I also designed a new goggle strap holder for 1.5" & 2" width straps, see Thingiverse 3918015

    I bought one just before I got my DJI set up, and then thought what will I do with it now. As I am going to use DJI for freestyle, have got my Rapid Fire on those for my analogue freestyle quads. So, I will use it for racing with my HDO's. I bought a Dock King, and TrueD X, then velcro mounted the PowerPlay onto the back of the Dock King. Jobs a goodun. H264 video while racing, and a nice ground station to boot.

    Not knocking FS but for the price they charge us this should of been a no brainier for them to add this to their new goggles,it's not like the tec wasn't already out there.
    Thanks for sharing Lee as it's very much appreciated mate. 😉👍👍

    Checking with ImmersionRC there is new firmware released today (12Jan) and I've also uploaded a belt clip for this too - www.thingiverse.com/thing:4098785 Also, be aware that some editing software may not interpret the interlaced frames in the video correctly. Make sure to enable any interlaced flicker reduction features your editor has..

      The Fat Shark Scout goggles record 60fps because they share the same core DVR hardware/firmware as the PowerPLAY.

    Having just upgraded from FS Scouts to HDO2’s, I’m shocked at the downgrade in the DVR so this looks tempting. Are the H.264 files capable of being imported to iPhone?

    I wish they would release the firmware update that they are beta testing. Also, i wish they could also do interlaced mode, so i could deinterlace the video myself. The result would be better than what the encoder in the powerplay does.

    • @licensetodrive9930

      Yes! I also want a miniature DVR that records the full interlaced resolution with no cropping/scaling/deinterlacing so I can deinterlace it with QTGMC because that's practically a miracle deinterlacing filter.

      @Its Blunty What we need is a 'pro' setting in the DVRs so it gives you the raw recording. With the equipment I have I was able to measure how much my Fat Shark HD2 goggles' DVR and the PowerPLAY crop from NTSC source footage:
      Fat Shark = 0 top, 24 left, 16 right, 7 bottom, then that 680x473 image is scaled 640x480
      PowerPLAY = 1 top, 13 left, 11 right, 11 bottom, then that 696x468 image is scaled to 720x480
      And from PAL source footage:
      Fat Shark = 2 top, 22 left, 18 right, 3 bottom, then that 680x475 image is scaled to 640x480
      PowerPLAY = 7 top, 11 left, 13 right, 5 bottom, then that 696x564 image is scaled to 720x576

    • @licensetodrive9930
      @licensetodrive9930 4 года назад

      @Its Blunty In the old days of CRT TVs and VHS/Betamax, the video recorders did actually capture the entire resolution but your TV would cut off the borders because cameras don't always fill the entire 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL image, even today. I want to post a RUclips link to a full 720x480 capture of mine from a Caddx Eos2 showing the bad borders it has but I don't appear to be able to post links in this comment section, and you can't see those bad edges from the camera because your goggles and DVR cut them off.

      I found a raw clip under one of your video's @@licensetodrive9930 I found the audio sample rate is 32kHz, which isn't good enough to record audio telemetry (fax sounds), that needs the 44.1kHz. However: Is a PAL video format recorded in 50fps? Or is there such a setting or is it converted to 60fps? And was there by any chance a pro settings update as mentioned here above?

    Ive seen a review of the powerplay, showing that if you play it back at 1/4 speed, 60fps, you will notice the picture jumping up and down by one pixel, can you notice that on your unit?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  4 года назад

      That is due to the way the image is interlaced when recorded. The editing software is not interpreting the interlaced frame correctly. Make sure if you are editing the footage to enable any interlaced flicker reduction features it has..

    Hello, I have a request. You did awesome vid on how to upgrade the firmware on QX7 and how to use S6R also with STK tool. Thank you for that. But, all is changed. With the new release, the steps are different. Perhaps a new topic for the new content.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  4 года назад

      What things specifically? The flashing of the radio is the same as the QX7 OpenTX 2.2 video I did with the exception of the versions of OpenTX and the Amber pack.. Please let me know..

    • @XrossRider
      @XrossRider 4 года назад

      @@Painless360 Hi, thx for the quick answer. Well, the first STK tool is different, now it is Tool-FrSky Freelink, of course under the receiver's menu it looks similar, but it could be confusing for some. There is also a new version of OpenTX 2.3.4 Compaion which can not flash the firmware of QX7 if you have a Taranis that has not had the firmware update to 2.0. Then the Companion will not work. What to do then. I know maybe it's not too much for vid, and has nothing to do with this thread and video. But I just wanted to get your attention on the topic. I have similar problems. Just an idea for another updated video. :)

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  4 года назад

      If you're radio is out of date then you will need to upgrade it twice - once to the latest version that you can with the original FW you have and then another time to take that newly updated radio to the latest version.. The release notes for each release do cover this in some detail. Hope that helps..

    I really notice the video shaking when looking at that top bar in your side by side DVR footage. However I do like that it names files with the date and time. Does anyone know of a cheaper DVR that names files this way?

    • @licensetodrive9930
      @licensetodrive9930 4 года назад +1

      Years ago when I figured out that my Fat Shark goggles don't properly datestamp DVR recordings, I could do a workaround so I know what day they were recorded on, and allow me to archive DVR flight footage easily:
      When going out flying, plug the microSD into a computer and rename the existing DCIM directory to DCIM001 or DCIM002 if 001 already exists etc., then create a new DCIM directory using the computer.
      You'll then end up with DCIM001, DCIM002, DCIM003 etc. directories which are datestamped for the day they were created.

      @Alan Hobbs :)
      I'm up to DCIM317 now. It's actually quite useful having the directories archived by date because I can go back and check things, and if I forget to make the timestamped directory with a computer, it's easier to narrow down when it was created by looking at the previous & next DCIM directory dates.

      I designed a new goggle strap clip for the PowerPLAY so it can fit on 1.5" & 2" width straps, someone saw that and asked if I could design them a version that clips on their 12mm diameter paracord belt, so I did. I could also redesign it so it fits on ordinary belts. See Thingiverse 3918015
      I also redesigned the back shell of the PowerPLAY so it takes 18650 cells, see Thingiverse 4080213
