You had me at "rubber mat" in the trunk.
Robert D. I know right?!?!😂😂
*attractive* rubber Mat 😂
But ya got to swing a little, before you can get that rubber mat.
Plus the neck snapping 200 ponies (probably 140 at the wheels) propelling that heavy pile of scrap iron.
@grumpy old fart Seriously? Do they still build econoboxes with that LITTLE power?...I guess they do but any nice midsize or bigger car these days for less money (adjusted for inflation) has that sort of old fashioned wimpy power or more. My OLD econbox 2001 330 has 245 hp, My little 2011 BMW M3 has 414 hp and it's outdated, new ones have a lot more. You need to get out more. hahaha Affordable cars are available today with 500hp.
They convinced me. I will pay $170 more and buy a Dodge Demon!
Not worthy
ew1usnr best comment ever... I love it LOL
My wife had a 302 maverick. 2800 lb car. TRhings were tanks.
sivvybee That a good thing or a bad thing?
Jacob Dean it was a great thing. My mom had one when she was 16, I’ve got one now.
Here in Brazil, dodge's answer to the chevy opala and the ford maverick was the Dodge Dart(same design you guys had for the 68 model, but we got it until about 1979)
Yep, it's the Briaziling Dodge Charger.
My first car was a 1971 Demon . that was a great car . wish I still had it.
"They want to swing a little."
Alimonytony
Careful. We all know swingin will cost more.
Swingers
That girl was Hot...lol
Then they should buy a "Swinger" hardtop.
@@smokeystriper you mean D100. E100 would have been a Ford Econoline.
I like how they actually show some good things about the ford but still convince you that the demon is better
A dropped in rubber trunk mat: Yeah Baby! The value and excitement begins here!!!!!!
I gotta say I like the maverick better in terms of styling! But that attractive rubber mat in the trunk of the demon, oooh that’s sexy
😂
Funny as hell
Rarely is styling used in the same sentence as Maverick.
@@efandmk3382 compared to the Demon, the Maverick was Giorgio Armani.
I've never been more excited by a rubber mat in the trunk until now.
*trunk
Morg Golden thanks lol
I know, that rubber mat is AWESOME!!!
I'm sold! Better leaf springs, better drum brakes, road hugging weight, and to top it off, a rubber trunk mat!
Roger Spacebucks Fools use those fabric carpet floor mats .
S O L D
TORSION BARS
Rubber trunk mats will MAGA
I also like how the fact that Demon being heavy is a selling point
Ever drive one of these rear wheel things in the snow or on slick roads? Trust me, every bit of weight helps.
What’s wrong with with puTting some sandbags in the trunk? I guess the oil crisis hit in 73 so fuel economy only mattered to cheapskates. However weight kills performance.
Keep in mind that cars had bias ply tires back then and they sucked in the snow.
@@woxyroxme And no traction/stability control, no electronic brakeforce distribution, and no ABS.
They did have a couple of advantages in deep snow, though - most passenger cars back then had better ground clearance than even most 'cuvs' or 'suvs' these days, let alone today's ground-hugging passenger cars; and cars had thinner tires which cut through snow easier and increase pressure on the footprint (for more snow traction).
Heavy means a more stable ride, especially on the highway and in high crosswinds, and more safety in collisions (all other things being equal).
Yes, it's bad for handling, acceleration, and terrible for economy, brake wear and tire wear, but there are two sides to the coin.
You had me when you said that the couple considering buying the car, "like to swing a little."
Very, very few people were swingers back then. Same with the so called 'free love' sixties. Didn't happen. That was only in a few cities and college campuses. At the time, something like 70% of girls were still virgins when they got married, and most of the others had only had sex with one guy, usually the guy they ended up marrying.
hahahah yeah!! It brought out the 'demon' in me!
Car comes with large bowl and extra set of keys.
@@mikemonopoli120 Lol!! UNDERRATED COMMENT!! Sorry, had to do the caps.
The 2 door version of the dart was called the swinger. The demon was just a variant of the mopar A-body.
Who doesn't appreciate a beautifully sculptured rear end! :)
I had a 73 Duster. I miss that ole rust bucket. She always got me home no matter what issues came up. And easy to fix.
Alright....you sold me. I'll be heading down to the Dodge dealer to pick up my new 340 Demon.
truthinvideos
with 4 speed, Go wing, rallye gauges with tach, bucket seats, hood pins, hood scoops, hood call outs, tuff wheel and what's that? That'll be how much? Are you crazy?!

The 1972 Demon base engine with a 3-speed manual 198 cu inch slant 6 100hp was rated at 12.2 seconds 0-60, 1/4 mile was 19.0 sec @ 72 mph and top speed was 96 mph. The top engine Demon 240hp 340 4-speed was rated 0-60 6.4 sec. 1/4 mile 15.0 @ 94 mph with a top speed of 124 mph. The automatic was rated at 7.2 sec 0-60 and a 1/4 mile 15.4 sec @ 90 mph top speed was 121 mph The Maverick with the top engine 143hp 302 cu 0-60 in 9.4 sec. 1/4 mile 17.1 @ 81 mph and a 112 mph top speed.
Dude, you really need to get laid more often.
Maverick top engine was a 210 hp 302. Ran the 1/4 mile in 16.2, that's with a 2 bbl, single exhaust, and crappy gears. Put the Mustang drivetrain in it and it would run circles around the top of the line demon
orange70383 who cares ?
Who gives a shit vehicle nerd
In 1972 they went to net hp, they didn't use gross hp anymore.
Bought a new Demon with the 318 ,ordered it in Vietnam.
Walter Harp thank you for your service. And please tell us the story i bet it was something. Bet you were so proud first time you drove it
@ Walter Harp. I bet the delivery cost was insane from the US to where you ordered it in Vietnam. With the terrain over there, the rice paddies and the jungle I would have ordered the 4 wheel drive Ram Charger.
"Thirty-nine dollars for the next bigger engine."
now its 3900
$39 in 1972 was about $230 in today’s money. Still pretty cheap though..
That was just a bigger six. I wonder how much the 340 cost?
Must have been nice to have been a Boomer.
Now its more money for the next smaller engine because that has a turbo strapped on for more power. And then its how many more turbos on the same engine. 170cid is about the size of the alfa giulia v6 with over 500 net bhp and rated at over 30 us mpg.
You're not fooling anyone, that man is not in this 20's
Right, when it seems that he’s in his mid 30’s or something. But not like the girl in the other hand.
And he ain't swinging neither
I bet he was, people back then didn't stay as baby faced as we do nowadays, they had it a bit more rough, what with leaded gasoline and smoking being promoted by doctors and such.
Maybe 40 but not 20
He is 31 she maybe 24.
I loved it! Especially when it talks about how a heavier weight is better "especially on windy days" 😂
You don't just want to blow away now do you?
Ask the Yugo owners .
1972 Maverick with three on the "tree". The first vehicle I've ever driven - 1979 @ 10 years old! :)
Little did this couple know just how fast their Demon would rust out from under them.
... yet there's still thousands of them on the road in the southwest USA, with faded paint, but no rust at all.
No salt in the Southwest. The u.s. purchased a lot of bad steal from Asia in the 70s which also contributed to rampant rust issues.
Yup. Drive any of those cars in the northeast and they're bound to rot away on you. Had a 74 valiant that the bottom front rotted right out. Was like a flintstone car.
fantom58 ha that's funny
Got to buy 30 cans of black undercoating and spray coat the bottom when new add another 10 years on before starts to rot out the floor boards that's what the truck drivers in Toronto Ontario Canada did 30 years ago then put shackles on the rear leaf springs so the rear end was jacked up and then painted the differenal rear end flouresnt orange
my brother had the 72 duster with a slant six, i thought it was the 225...but that thing used to struggle to do 80 mph, lol and the way they brag about the torsion bar front end, they were a nightmare back then
My parents had a '73 Duster with a Slant Six. My dad complained about how lousy that engine performed in the winter.
It's time to bring back gogo boots and hot pants.
hahahah FOR REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not know they ever went away.
Ah...the seventies. This takes me back!
This car is heavier, so it's better... lol
repawnd ironically when they said heavier I thought slower. I would have gone for the four on the floor and the larger V8 anyway.
In those days, in these economy cars, there was hardly any luxury. So a heavier car meant thicker steel, bigger axles, and stronger engines and gearboxes. Extra weight went into the hardware of the car.
It sounds funny today, but that phrase was valid back then
I thought that was funny too. Trying to sell us on extra weight and torsion suspension. :) I prefer the Demon to the Maverick but the Maverick has its own merits too. The smaller size I am sure helped in the city and with parking.
Too this day many stupid Americans buy vehicles by the pound, or the cubic foot, they don't give a damn about design or quality. It's just a sack of potatoes to them.
@@Mrbfgray its TO not TOO, who is the stupid one now?
My dad always said you can't kill the slant 6...then I seized it up 10 years later..should have checked the oil. It was banana yellow with white vinyl roof. RIP Dart
Was it the 198?
Back when rubber mats were a selling point :-)
We take rubber mats for granted now. We take trunk carpeting for granted now.
There used to be millions of Mavericks and
Pintos driving around. Now they're gone.
Yeah! Praise Jesus for that!
The Oil Embargo & Even/Odd days in 1973-1974 were sea changes for the American Auto industry. That's explains why Ford did well with the Pinto. Even into the '80's the public sacrificed safety for economy. Explains why even Le Car had a following. Sadly, Detroit just wasn't nimble. Toyota & Honda owe their beginning to the Energy Crisis. Yet American Auto could compete. Remember AMC? Interestingly, 2000 saw $1.01 regular & the SUV took off. Now even ad oil prices lower, TESLA & e cars grow!
They exploded on impact ha ha
They are here in Mexico
I'm 15 and I got a 1970 Ford maverick grabber, it's my first car and I have my car friends and they don't know what the heck it is lol
Shit cost a two story house now 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Shit is right. Love to drive it to that girl tho!
what are you talking about you can get demon's for semi reasonable prices nowadays not like Chargers and Challegers
@@zacht9447 the Demon is a submodel of Challenger.
@@charliekiger No.... The Demon is a submodel of the Dart. Technically it was a Dart Demon, which is an a-body. Chargers (of this era) were b-bodies, and Challengers were e-bodies.
Gotta say I like the Maverick's style better. It was designed of a piece, where the Duster had been a rebody to fit the existing Valiant nose while the facelift Dart nose was done in another studio. But everything else...I'd have hit the Ford salesman up for a Maverick promo model and then bought a Duster/Demon (which one would depend on prices and equipment at the dealers).
My father had the 1972 Dogde Demon with that color. Great car with great options. I am glad to see a comparison with Mavericks as are well known back then.
I honestly believe the car sales would go up if they went back to doing car commercials like this yeah!
All the car companies are in bed these days.
You mean by lying and making your product sound great when it was mediocre? How many cars today have a 'modern' torsion bar suspension? NONE. EVery one has coils.
Ralf 2269 I am right there with you brother This was s sales training video not a commercial.
It's MOPAR or No Car, Brother! In the olden times, My Dad bought a NEW, 1971 Duster, 225 slant six, with three-speed manual shift and no A/C for $2200. I put Mag Wheels on it, a killer Audiovox stereo (LOL!) & drove that car all through my Senior high school years and then college. Put 98,000 miles on it and sold it in 1983, for $1500. Now that's VALUE!
😮
chryslers are complete junk dude
@@toddbob55 The new ones yes but the old ones no.
Ah the seventys. A simpler time .
I like how this is a (somewhat) factual product pitch and comparison, while modern ads are more like *”BUY OUR CARS WE’RE INPORTANT!”*
Love the way they used this training film to explain to the middle aged car salesman of the 1970's how to sell a Demon to the youngsters. How to speak the kids language so to speak.
While these are nice cars for their compact class, I would have purchased an AMC Hornet the year prior. Why, you may ask? The SC/360 package speaks for itself!
@@@drott150 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Eye
A feature was the "desert only" setting on the A/C thermostat control, a position that typically ran the compressor continually. In humid environments, the evaporator will freeze up from the accumulating condensation if the compressor operates constantly, which will ultimately block airflow.[18] Other temperature settings cycle the compressor to prevent this problem. Freeze up is not a concern in dry environments such as deserts, and this setting provides constantly cooled air flow into the passenger compartment.
Bragging about the car being heavier..... That shit ain’t happening nowadays
Heavier meant that the car rode better; more sprung weight.
They were FAT SHAMING even back then!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAAH
I had a 1972 Dodge Dart Demon. Unfortunately, it was just the sticker package version as it came equipped with a 225 slant six. It was very reliable, never broke down, but it went through motor mounts like crazy!
its not a sticker package, you just had the base model demon
I am a mopar guy but I always liked the looks of the Maverick over the Duster/Demon
Closet Ford fan
Thanks, I'll spend a few bucks and upgrade the Maverick.
An "attractive rubber mat on the trunk floor"! I'm sold !
I'll take the 340 and the gorgeous female in the boots to go please

Be careful what you wish for that lady's old as hell now
$2.70 a month? I'll take it!

Chrysler always won with styling and brute force. Everybody knows that.
Chrysler is one of the best industries of cars, but they was a bigger disaster with the generation "KA" some of the worst cars ever made. But i like your mention, the chrysler division is beaty and work fine.
I honestly preferred the look of the Maverick. The trunk looks overly long IMO on the dodge and front end looks busy. Other then that its a nice car IMO.. Both sweet cars though!
I own a 70 maverick and my buddy owns a late 70s Duster.
But Chrysler lost with shoddy materials and workmanship.
Keep in mind 1972 $100 adjusted for inflation today would = $2,500.
"IMO" ???!!! Spoken like a true TidePod licker.
100$ in 1972 Adjusted for inflation is 600$.
This is awesome! I have a 72 Duster, first car I ever owned.

I remember them well
340 was great in that car👍🇨🇦
Aahh the seventies! Leaf springs and no place for a cell phone.
Thanks for this look back.
Good luck finding either one of these cars for sale now, I have a feeling they all went to scrap metal heaven
Woah a real rubber trunk mat im sold
I bet the Bible thumpers back in the 70’s weren’t too happy with the demon
Right. Dodge changed the nameplate to 'Dart Sport' pretty quick.
They actually were very upset with it
Making a joke of demonic spirits didn't go over so well. I can still remember my Sunday school teacher mentioning it in 71 or 72. Jesus was a "bible thumper" too.

A big mistake! lol 😂
Love my Mavericks
Had a Plymouth duster. And own a Maverick!
Just an additional Rubber Mat, wow. So luxurious.
Thanks for putting the cool commercials out so everyone can see them and see how awesome Mopars are is what that was supposed to say
"The Good Ol' Days" when 'swinger' meant 'having a good time' and a heavier car was a virtue.
And when being longer and wider was a virtue for an economy car. LOL
Back when a gallon of gas was maybe 40 cents a gallon .... mileage was not even mentioned
40-cents might seem cheap, but the minimum wage in 1972 was $1.60; I made $333/month as an E3 in the army. Adjusted for inflation, gas is cheaper now than its every been.
Man, I wish I could buy one of those rubber trunk mats!
You can, but now they cost $100.
Magníficos autos tengo 59 ajos y de joven tuve un Ford Maverick motor en línea de 8 cilindros siempre disfrute de su eficiencia y seguridad al manejarlo
I had both back in the day. I thought both where basically nice cars. '72 Demon with 225 six auto, gold with black side stripes and cream color vinyl seats interior. '74 Maverick green with 200 six auto, green cloth seats. I sold the Demon when I was issued a company car, the new owner promptly rolled and totalled it. The doors rusted off the maverick and it was junked. The maverick had one irritating habit of throwing on full choke at any time and killing the engine. The thing with the demon was the slant six mechanical valve lifters made noise.
How about the Demon with that hot 340 V8 and four speed for $2950?
The Maverick's standard 3-speed transmission is fully synchronized in all forward gears. The Demon's three-on-the tree has synchro only on the top two.
You’ve got to love the guy on the far left in the slide starting around 0:20 who looks like a movie star with that huge collar and some kind of scarf application on his neck. Lol.
My Dad did this comparison in 1972. Neither car had the leg room he expected to need with teenage sons. He bought a Saab 99. A much better interior design, it had more legroom than the bigger Dart/Valiant. And fuel injection, front wheel drive and 1 HP / cubic inch. It handled well, where as other family Dart's just were good for tire screeching when trying to stop.
fwd isnt a positive thing tho
I bet that Saab was a maintenance pig as well compared to the Dart mate.
@@CJColvin mechanically , yeah. Expensive electronic fuel injectors. seat adjusters, trunk hinges. Drive chain. PITA stuff. But the Saab made it close to 200,000 w/o rusting out. The wife's Dart needed floor repair by 100,000 miles.
Man I've owned a lot of older car's IN my sixty two years old and I started driving on the road when I was fifteen years old!
We had a '72 Maverick. Great 200 but should have disconnected the high gear vacuum sensor. Still, a trip from Ca to Wa in '81 with 4 adults and a trunk full of luggage was a blast. Over 26 mpg from what i remember.
I wish I had a 340 Demon today; My buddy bought a lime green one about 7 years ago for $13K. We were still fishtailing at 100 mph in 3rd gear and that car was a rocket ship! He sold it back to the guy he got it from 2 years later for $15K and used the money for a late model Mustang GT.
Oh for the days when pretty young things wore hot pants and velour knee boots....sigh.
They were made for speed eh? Free love & all the trimmings! B4 my time. Prefer Ford's tho overall these days. Can't beat them Ford trucks! #Ecoboost #F150
& had no phones to look at & hung out OUTSIDE on friday & sadday nites downtown on cruising strips
She was sexy as hell
They had to drop the Demon name; way too satanic....[roll eyes] But what were they thinking when they named a car, "Swinger?" Goes both ways?
I had the Duster 340, same car. But I always like the Demon's tail lights and logo. After they dropped the Demon name, they just resurrected Dart Sport
American Motors which was formed with the merger of Nash and Hudson resurrected the Hudson model name Hornet. Another former Hudson name was being considered, "Wasp." But they realized the name had somewhat negative connotations, particularly to minorities and perhaps liberals. Studebaker came out with a "Dictator" around the time that Hitler was coming to power. The few examples that were exported were relabeled, "Director."
The one that they didn't think out that gets me is Toyota's TRD truck (Toyota Racing Development) I can't help but think of the TURD truck
Polaroid named a camera "swinger." But it was a Polaroid so I guess that made sense somehow.
They took a lot of flack for the 'Demon' nameplate. It was changed to 'Dart Sport'.
The rubber trunk mat sold me !! Got to find my time machine quickly !!
Does the girl come with it? No? OK, screw it then, I'll just get a Malibu

This is great, never seen this before.
Love it or hate it (I’m a mopar guy but a demon? No!) I miss the days of the “big three” with American Motors right behind with some great cars.
I can’t believe they are comparing the design when a Maverick looks a lot more slick and better looks.
I really liked Mavericks, but, we bought a Pinto, it was just loaded with options, but the Maverick would have been a better choice. I have a Demon 340.
I has both
Maverick was a better looking car
My dad had a guy in the Goodyear factory where he worked make up some shackles for my Maverick so i could fit some E-60s in the back with chrome reverse wheels! Loved the fastback style too.
I watched this a while back I love it
I am 66 now and enjoy watching the cars and commercials that were around when i was a teenager as well as those PRETTY models and their attire, don't see legs like that now too often if at all
Muy buenos ambos coches aquí en México se vendieron bien. Saludos desde Guadalajara Jalisco.
I remember 1972. I was in high school. By then we could see that the performance era was no longer with us. Power was dropping like a rock and it was illegal to modify engines on the newer cars. At that time that we had no reason to think horsepower would ever return. It took over a decade to even begin to come back.
Early mavericks I liked.....but both got porch bumpers that ruined the styling on later yeared cars.......that girl is wicked fine too
It was easy enough to go to the junkyards and pick up the minimalist bumpers and replace those railroad tie '5mph' ones.
"They want to swing a little". Well, damn!
The simulated wood applique and that rubber trunk matt is a must👌
No way I'd watch an ad this long back in the day
Id like to see a commercial like this in the modern era. One automaker bashing another competing car to oblivion lol.
It is interesting that the Demon has a 5 inch longer wheelbase than the Maverick. Usually this translates to more interior room, but the Demon has less rear seat legroom. They don't give the actual dimensions or differences, so based on this we'd have to conclude that the extra wheelbase and length are all in the trunk.
This is like a commercial for stoners that can't decide to either get pizza or just go to McDonald's
I had a 72 Demon 340 six pack. In blue. Not a real bad car but had more rattles than a coffee being shaken full of rocks. I wished they would’ve made the current Demon to look more like the old ones. And not like a challenger.
They never made any factory Demon 340 with a Six Pack.

My dad bought 71 Ford Maverick for my mother. I don't know which one was worse, I never drove it - my brother totaled it. I wish I could drove/owned my dad's 65 Ford Galaxie 500.
The Demon is a car that would still be modern today in every way except for air bags which could be added. Very nice style and good size car. Blows the Maverick away.
A 340-4 Speed demon (A-Body) was cheaper to insure than a E-Body 340-4 Speed
Maverick's fuel tank was just in front of the rear bumper. The Chrysler's placed the tank ahead of the rear axle. A hit from behind could easily rupture the Ford tank, not so the Dodge.
The Maverick LDO 302 was a great car.
7:00 the front wheels were really spaced 2 inches further apart than the rear wheels. This made the car look incredibly stupid, but you were able to put wider rims on the back with no rubbing problems.
Anton Chigur in his younger days. The Dodge Demon was his first car and fitting for him. He just started his career he knew he needed a good sized trunk for his line of work.
My station wagon (Holden Adventrua) weighs 1950kg (4,300 lbs!) and the Maverick & Demons each weigh atleast 600kg (1300 lbs) less!!
It's amazing how much bulkier cars have gotten over the ears full of tech & safety... that said, I've still got an old Kingswood (sedan), because it's nice to be able to work on your own car!
