Larry is in my top 3. MJ, Larry, and for me Bill Russell. If blocks were measured back then Bill Russell would have EASILY averaged a triple double for his career, from what I’ve seen at least 12-15 blocks a game. He averaged almost 16 points and 23 rebounds a game and won 11 titles in 13 years
Yes I was going to suggest that too. It’s called “Bird & Magic: a Courtship of Rivals”. It’s excellent. A lot of younger people don’t realize that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were such rivals that they didn’t even speak with each other until late in their careers. It was only then that they realized they were very much alike. As their playing careers ended, (both due to health issues), the fierce competition turned into a mutual respect and friendship.
One thing about Magic and Bird's rivalry was it was true rivalry. Each pushed the other on to do better. After they did a commercial together they became fast friends but always tried to be better than the other with no malice.
He didn't just invent the 50/40/90 club. He also was the second member the following year. Those two seasons were doing a four-year span that he averaged 50/40/90, and two of the four years he missed it by a fraction. He was just decimal points away from four 50/40/90 seasons in a row. And he is 50/38/89 for his career
I grew up watching basketball from the late 60s till about 2010, when it did seem to get soft; there wasn’t that drive to get the rebounds, or play through an injury; when winning and teamwork was the driving force. I was a NY Knicks fan, but every time Larry Bird played and it was televised or the Celtics were in town and I could get to Madison Square Garden, I was there. There was something about him… every time he stepped foot on that court, you knew something special was going to happen and it always did. I feel blessed to have been able to watch basketball in the days when it was a little rough, and the refs let them play rough. All in all Bird is my GOAT. Best all-around basketball player ever. I think the reason you tear up is because you know you are watching greatness… I tear up too. And I have to admit every time you say that Larry is playing back then what the guys are playing now, I see it in the reverse… The league finally figured out how to play like Larry Bird! 🐐☘️. @@donolinger6904 Not broken, but ruptured disks. He had incredible pain for years and had to lie down on the court instead of the bench. He was in the hospital a night before one game. Had his back been OK, he would have another banner at least, and the best winning percentage of anyone.
You seem like a nice young man. Larry's career was cut short because of a terrible back. Larry was old school and did his own work around his and his mothers house. He was doing conrete work on his mom's driveway when he injured his back and it was that injury that finally resulted in his career being cut short. He mowed his own grass as well, he was blue collar all the way. He tore both Achilles Heels in 89 and missed almost the entire season and still in 13 seasons made the All Star team 12 times and All Star first team 10 of the 12 times. He was incredible to watch because no one had a complete game like him before. He could shoot from any where, his passes were incredible, he was a rebounding machine and his foul shot was money in the bank. New subscriber here also. To add to those comments, in Larry’s last season as basically a cripple after those Achilles and back injuries he still averaged 20ppg and 10rpg. I’d recommend watching Bird vs Jordan 1991 to appreciate how good Bird was against Jordan and the Bulls when he was old and beat up while Jordan was in his prime.

You forgot two other things 1. Before his NBA career started he hand a finger on his shooting hand mangled so bad during a softball game that he had to have 2 surgeries to try to fix it but it was never straight again and he couldn't fully bend it and 2. After hurting his back shoveling his mom's driveway a few years later he did worse damage to his back when chopping wood and after that his Doctor advised him to retire cuz his back was so bad but Larry being Larry continued to play a few more years.
I really appreciate your open mind checking out LB. He's my favorite all time player so I'm happy when he get some recognition. Then you can still prefer somebody else, LBJ, MJ, Magic, whoever, it's totally fine, what I don't like is when people bash other players in a way or another just to put their favorite above everyone. There are a few athletes that when they play whether you're a fan of that sport or not you stopped and watched Larry Bird was one of them just like when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire were going in the home run Derby or when Secretariat won the triple crown or Wayne Gretzky played in hockey or Barry Sanders ran the football you just didn't want to miss it because you knew something spectacular was going to happen almost every time
The 80’s was the most exciting time in basketball. Larry saved basketball from the toilet. When he came to the Celtics the TV stations would play reruns instead of games. Bird changed that. His contributions extended far beyond the ball.

I started watching at the tail end of LB's career. I was watching that playoff game live on tv when all the team had to do was pass it inbound. Out of nowhere, from offscreen, Larry comes in and snags the inbound pass away and passes it to a team mate to win the game with the shot. Was something else.
Thanks for showing interest in the golden age of the NBA……..the 80’s. Nothing and I mean NOTHING will ever top Bird vs Magic. It captivated the nation for entire decade. I feel blessed to have lived to see Larry play

He's beaten every ha of famer in his Era. No other player in that Era has done that.not even Jordan. Bird is 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs. Swept him twice. JORDAN got his trash talking from Larry. He was 3 times three point champ consecutive. 3 straight MVPs. Career 90 percent free throw shooter. Was 50/40/90 three times. Career double digit rebounds and made three all defensive teams. Best all around player ever.
Larry was a really good defender. Not like he was competing for the leagues best defender or anything but he was good enough to make the All defense team 3 times.
So cool to watch all you young guys learn how good these legends were, Larry is my number 1 pick but I’m an old man and have watched these legends. Larry “basketball Jesus” the legend Bird.
Not only was he the founder of the 50/40/90 club, he did it twice, and was less than 1% away at least three other seasons. When the team needed a morale boost, we're a little worn out, he'd tell them they could have a day off if anybody made a half court shot. Larry would always do it and send everybody home. Bird was deadly from anywhere. I've seen him go up for a shot, get clotheslined like a pro wrestler, flip almost upside down, shoot just before he landed on his head, and still make the shot. The crazy alley oop, catch,, shoot in mid air from three, and make it that only a handful of players have ever done once,, Larry used to have a couple of those every season. Larry is my favorite player, and in my opinion the most complete player ever. I've got him number two for GOAT. Right behind Jordan, just ahead of Magic.

I grew up watching Bird he was truly a legend, him and Magic were great friends the only time he got really mad at him was when Magic found out he had A.I.D.S and didn't tell him, he was mad because he didn't want his friend going through that alone.
HIV and AIDS are actually 2 different things. One is much worse than the other. HIV does not cause AIDS. We've been lied to about many things concerning reality. I had 2 cousins that each had 1 of those diseases. 3 to 6 years is a long lifespan after contracting AIDS. My cousin with HIV lived about 33 years after he got sick. The other cousin only lasted a few years. They are curable but we're not allowed to have those cures. We aren't élites so too bad for us.
Larry bird is the Goat. If he had not got injured he would have destroyed the record books. He was the smartest most clutch player ever. He could shoot from anywhere on the court. And if you gave him the last shot in a game. He would make you play every time. He was unstoppable. There will never be another larry legend.

They saved the NBA and that isn’t an exaggeration. Every current NBA player ought to donate 20 cents out of every dollar they make and send 10 cents to Magic, ten cents to Bird. They MADE the modern game.
He is the only player to win the mvp 3 consecutive years since the ABA merger. He is the only high volume shooter to do 50/40/90 more than once (Steve Nash did twice too). He is the only player to win rookie of the year, league mvp, finals mvp AND all star game mvp. Despite all of that, he was such an unselfish player. He went out of his way to get the entire team involved.

Did you catch it? In college Larry Bird and Magic Johnson wore the same jersey #. 33 And for a bit of the coincidental creepy vibe, during his last year of college leading up until his defeat by Johnson, Bird’s college team won 33 to 0. That’s a number I’d think I’d start using in the lotto.
The thing about larry, is his insane accuracy in clutch situations.. He has the highest percentage in game winning shots.. That's why teams will be scared shitless whenever he gets an opportunity to get off a shot in the dying seconds in a close game, because more often than not, it goes in.. That's why he's the clutchiest player.
This will add a little bit of perspective to how great Larry really was, Jordan was smashing everybody in the league but Larry had a 17-11 record against Jodan in the regular season & was 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs. As a child of the 70s and 80s, I was privileged to see this man for his entire career from his rookie year until the end. This fella making the video is correct. When Larry and Magic came into the league there were no, repeat NO live games being aired and the entire was on the verge of total collapse! When these two young men first entered the league, no one has seen their style of play before and the excitement around this rivalry that really both the print and TV media at the time kind of hyped up all for the sake of trying to save the league after the ABA and the NBA merged it was game on for the next decade of the most incredible basketball that no one had witnessed! And don't feel bad young man for tearing up. The night they aired this retirement ceremony they had for Larry I went through an entire box of tissues and sobbed my eyes out for weeks after he was officially gone. Larry was not only a clutch player but told the other team what he was going to do and defy them to stop him. He is the biggest trash talker in the history of the NBA. He was only one of the two players to repeat in the 40-50-90 club. Steve Nash was the other player to do so but not the high volume shooter that Larry was.

The video at the end, where magic calls him the greatest player ever, was the night that the Celtics retired Bird's number. There was no game that night. 18,000 people bought tickets to a 90 min ceremony to watch number 33 go to the rafters. And Magic flew across the country for it, which bird did not know was happening. Magic showing up that night was a surprise and a thrill for Larry

HE wasn't a center he was a small forward , when lebron was asked to name his top 3 players guess who was there Larry Bird,. then when Kobe Bryant was asked to name his starting all time 5 --Larry bird was his starting small forward , Magic had larry number one, michael jordan and stephen curry also has himm up there, but Kobe said it best lets not say who is number one lets just appreciate the brilliance of there game

Before his NBA career started he hand a finger on his shooting hand mangled so bad during a softball game that he had to have 2 surgeries to try to fix it but it was never straight again and he couldn't fully bend it and 2. After hurting his back shoveling his mom's driveway a few years later he did worse damage to his back when chopping wood and after that his Doctor advised him to retire cuz his back was so bad but Larry being Larry continued to play a few more years.
There are a lot of players that are awesome to watch. But the true legends are inspirational because they transcend the game.

I really appreciate your open mind checking out LB. He's my favorite all time player so I'm happy when he get some recognition. Then you can still prefer somebody else, LBJ, MJ, Magic, whoever, it's totally fine, what I don't like is when people bash other players in a way or another just to put their favorite above everyone. The 80’s was the most exciting time in basketball. Larry saved basketball from the toilet. When he came to the Celtics the TV stations would play reruns instead of games. Bird changed that. His contributions extended far beyond the ball.

I started watching at the tail end of LB's career. I was watching that playoff game live on tv when all the team had to do was pass it inbound. Out of nowhere, from offscreen, Larry comes in and snags the inbound pass away and passes it to a team mate to win the game with the shot. Was something else.

JORDAN got his trash talking from Larry. He was 3 times three point champ consecutive. 3 straight MVPs. Career 90 percent free throw shooter. Was 50/40/90 three times. Career double digit rebounds and made three all defensive teams. Best all around player ever.

So cool to watch all you young guys learn how good these legends were, Larry is my number 1 pick but I’m an old man and have watched these legends. Larry “basketball Jesus” the legend Bird.
Not only was he the founder of the 50/40/90 club, he did it twice, and was less than 1% away at least three other seasons. When the team needed a morale boost, we're a little worn out, he'd tell them they could have a day off if anybody made a half court shot. Larry would always do it and send everybody home. Bird was deadly from anywhere. I've seen him go up for a shot, get clotheslined like a pro wrestler, flip almost upside down, shoot just before he landed on his head, and still make the shot. The crazy alley oop, catch,, shoot in mid air from three, and make it that only a handful of players have ever done once,, Larry used to have a couple of those every season. Larry is my favorite player, and in my opinion the most complete player ever. I've got him number two for GOAT. Right behind Jordan, just ahead of Magic.

No problem. I cry every time I see the two of them interact. I started watching the NBA in 1961, and these are my two favorite players ever.
I grew up watching Bird he was truly a legend, him and Magic were great friends the only time he got really mad at him was when Magic found out he had A.I.D.S and didn't tell him, he was mad because he didn't want his friend going through that alone.

HIV and AIDS are actually 2 different things. One is much worse than the other. HIV does not cause AIDS. We've been lied to about many things concerning reality. I had 2 cousins that each had 1 of those diseases. 3 to 6 years is a long lifespan after contracting AIDS. My cousin with HIV lived about 33 years after he got sick. The other cousin only lasted a few years. They are curable but we're not allowed to have those cures. We aren't élites so too bad for us.
Magic didn't have AIDS, and miraculously, he still doesn't. He's HIV+
Larry bird is the Goat. If he had not got injured he would have destroyed the record books. He was the smartest most clutch player ever. He could shoot from anywhere on the court. And if you gave him the last shot in a game. He would make you play every time. He was unstoppable. There will never be another larry legend.
The Larry and Magic story is the most moving and beautiful story in sports history.

Larry was there for Magic when Magic announced his HIV diagnosis. Magic lost a lot of friends out of bias, ignorance (of HIV) and hate. Larry Bird believed in Magic. They loved each other. Rivals? Oh definitely. BIG rivalry. But you gotta remember: they were in a fraternity of precisely TWO. They were the only ones who could understand each other. They were an anomaly. They saved the NBA and that isn’t an exaggeration. Every current NBA player ought to donate 20 cents out of every dollar they make and send 10 cents to Magic, ten cents to Bird. They MADE the modern game.
You need to check out "Pistol" Pete Maravich. Both Bird and Magic got a lot of their moves from watching him play.

He is the only player to win the mvp 3 consecutive years since the ABA merger. He is the only high volume shooter to do 50/40/90 more than once (Steve Nash did twice too). He is the only player to win rookie of the year, league mvp, finals mvp AND all star game mvp. Despite all of that, he was such an unselfish player. He went out of his way to get the entire team involved.
The reason why anybody and everybody gets emotional is because they see this man’s got serious game all the way around. When you see a legend it can be quite emotional. I’m an old salt been watching basketball Before the NBA ABA merger. I don’t watch much of today’s games it’s just not the same league

This will add a little bit of perspective to how great Larry really was, Jordan was smashing everybody in the league but Larry had a 17-11 record against Jodan in the regular season & was 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs. The guy that most old school fans think is the GOAT never beat Larry Legend in the Playoffs & had a loosing record against Bird in the regular season. That is true basketball greatness.

As a child of the 70s and 80s, I was privileged to see this man for his entire career from his rookie year until the end. This fella making the video is correct. When Larry and Magic came into the league there were no, repeat NO live games being aired and the entire was on the verge of total collapse!
When these two young men first entered the league, no one has seen their style of play before and the excitement around this rivalry that really both the print and TV media at the time kind of hyped up all for the sake of trying to save the league after the ABA and the NBA merged it was game on for the next decade of the most incredible basketball that no one had witnessed!
And don't feel bad young man for tearing up. The night they aired this retirement ceremony they had for Larry I went through an entire box of tissues and sobbed my eyes out for weeks after he was officially gone. And nowadays a lot of these young cats they don't know how great the play was back then thinking all the only great players were Kobe and and LeBron and whoever but where do y'all think they got their play from? LeBron in two separate interviews spoke about how much he watched Bird's game play growing up and his top three of all time: Larry Bird, Dr J and Mike!

The video at the end, where magic calls him the greatest player ever, was the night that the Celtics retired Bird's number. There was no game that night. 18,000 people bought tickets to a 90 min ceremony to watch number 33 go to the rafters. And Magic flew across the country for it, which bird did not know was happening. Magic showing up that night was a surprise and a thrill for Larry
