Recently divorced, went from being a stay at home dad and extremely part time reseller to now where I'm working roughly thirty hours including all aspects of it. I had to be able to take care of myself and my two little children. I thank you and the couple other resellers I watch regularly have help me tremendously. I could never thank you guys enough for making it possible for me to do what you guys do and have a lot of free time for my kids. I love watching your videos, and again thank you for so much knowledge.

I have sold off and on mostly ebay for 26 years. I have sold while working at other full time "real" jobs and I have sold while unemployed. Now my husband and I are retired, and I am reselling full time mostly as an excuse to get out of the house. I don't make tons of money, but it keeps me busy, it gets us out to garage sales and auctions and keeps us moving. I am 63 and my husband is 74. The money is a nice bump to our income, and I don't know what I would be doing otherwise. Sitting around getting fatter probably. I find that when I am not selling, I miss the garage selling part of it. Digging through boxes and finding other people's treasures to me is fun and exciting. Talking to people and learning about the weird things I find are a big part of it too. I follow you because I see the passion for digging and searching for treasure in your videos over the other Tubers who are all about scheduling and structure and business planning.

Health insurance is a big concern in making the decision to leave a job. My husband works and we are covered, so for me to be a full time reseller was an easy decision. I did it for years part-time while homeschooling my kids. Now the youngest has entered college, but I am still his chauffeur. Once he starts driving, I will be free to ramp up the business. I always have going back to work for the State of Texas as a backup, but only if absolutely necessary. I LOVE reselling and the freedom it provides.

Reselling for a living is glamorized but I appreciate your practical take. I’ve been reselling for 8-9 years, successfully, as well as running my own business. I think personal finance, having no debt, having your house paid off or 1-2 years worth of living expenses saved up would provide a “safe” runway to try it for most.

I'm full time reselling and my sales are up 28.6% this year. I've heard of a lot of people having to find part-time jobs in the reselling world. The main reason is items are not moving fast enough and not selling for as much anymore. Most of those people started about 4years ago when online shopping reached an artificial peak. The growth was not natural but forced. Now that mostly everything has returned to normal it's going to take a lot more hard work to make it.

I work about 30 to 40 hours a week, and I'm having my best month ever with almost 5k net this month. I have 1400 or so listings. My avg ASP is $45 right now, and I live in a place that doesn't have a ton of thrift stores. My ROI is at least 5 times what i sepnd after all expenses. I mostly shop yard sales, 2 thrift stores, and some estate sales. Business is great right now. Not sure whether it will continue, but I'm hopeful. Punching a clock and taking home the bread is way less responsibility. Overhead can be a killer as well, depending on how deep you get. So, having a job frees up more time. This is surprising just because I would think enough people care about sweatshop workers, amazon workers, as well as seeing that desert of fast fashion in Chile. I don’t know the ebay rules but if i started listing there, part of me would want to put a picture of that desert in my description. I do see some things that really piss me off when I try to sell my old concert shirts. Unless the app has an option to go from high to low price and someone actually uses it, they’ll see hundreds of $15 shirts made last week in Bangladesh instead of the one I have kept with me since 1993. And it’s illegal.

i am going to make a couple of separate comments on this video. I am so glad you mentioned social media as a part of your reselling business. I still agree with you that you could have absolutely made it without the social media. I also appreciate how you fight to stay out of debt and live without the "Lifestyle" others are into. But also keep in mind the resell culture becomes bargain shoppers, couponers, deal spotters, and tightwads for everyday needs and wants(this is good) I also want to say I am more entertained by your picker channel more than the flipper channel but I consider the flipper channel more as an instructional and COMMUNITY channel . The discussion and debate and even the more aggressive comments have value, So with that I say thank you for every thing you do. You are a successful reseller, youtuber, and a person.

  • @skipjenn
    @skipjenn Месяц назад +4

I’ve been full time reseller for 12 years.
Speak to many other resellers and what most people don’t understand is that eBay controls your sales. You can have 5 sales in an hour , then go the next 24 hours with no sales at all.
If you’re a newer seller , you’ll see faster sales , especially if your undercutting everyone on price. Once your account is a few years old you’ll see how they control it.
If you an ell a big ticket item , then just plan on the next few days of having no sales.
eBay has too many sellers , not enough buyers. They want each seller paying those store fees and so the Cassini algorithm splits up the sales to keep everyone as happy as they can.
Some don’t believe this but that usually people that are new or small part time sellers.
We have 2 units of shelves and about 100k in products listed and it’s Monday morning. Haven’t had a sale yet today and the weekend is dead.
If you don’t have the room to store products , and you live check to check DO NOT do this full time. Stay small and just keep this as a side hustle.

    • @Villain175
      @Villain175 Месяц назад +1

This is just not true. If you have product with a demand and you price it correctly you will make sales. If your inventory doesn’t have high demand it will sit on the shelf longer. I have been selling on eBay since 2008. This is the way it’s always been. I sell a lot of low sell through rate items and I promote them at 2-5%. I have consistent sales almost daily. I have days where I sell something that’s $200+ and the next day ends up being better.

I retired from the USAF and I'm also on Social Security - I started my reselling business to provide some additional income - My wife is disabled but has an eye for valuable things. We have been reselling for about 2 months. Our sells are growing, but nothing to crow about.
I would not recommend reselling unless you have other income because the economy is getting worse, and inflation is destroying people ability to buy! Ironically trying to keep up my standard of living with inflation has forcing me into reselling!

I got into reselling as a hobby. I am an empty nester and tried to find something to occupy my time. I began thinking I would do the sourcing (my favorite part) and then hand off to my son so he could have extra money and just pay me back my cost. He didn't really do much of it and then my granddaughter came along and now the money I make goes for investments for her. With changes in my job I would LOVE to go full-time but the reselling is nowhere near what I make so I keep chugging along doing both. I work from home so don't tell my boss I occasionally list items in between tasks ;-) I will retire in about 10 years so I've already got a great start in what I will do in my retirement.

2 reason why you are not a fulltime reseller, 1) you haven't figured out yet that you have to work really hard all the time, like 7 days a week. 2) you like the idea of being a fulltime reseller because of the freedom it can provide but you don't really have the drive or motivation to work that hard. You don't mind being told what to do. A Boss is a Boss in any position, and that generally doesn't work well in cooperate jobs. My Bosses didn't like me telling them what to do, but I am the boss and they had a silly title. You need to be a self starter, disciplined and hard working to be a fulltime reseller, most people are none of these things. If you are okay with working for someone else you will, if you are not, you wont. Those that wont, can be fulltime resellers, those that can, will probably end up working for someone again at some point.

We have the top plan available and catastrophic medical through Christian Healthcare Ministries. It's quite affordable, everything is filed online, and it allows us the freedom to choose our own PCPs and Specialists. We spend far less than other traditional medical insurance with copays and meeting deductibles. Yes, there's paperwork involved for larger expenses, but it's super easy to do. Check it out for their different tiers and pricing....they do have family plans. Just a thought as an alternative.

The issue with ‘doubling hours to make double the money’ is that people don’t tend to double the hours on the tasks which actually make them money.
Say they spent 20 hours a week on eBay before. 10 hours listing and 10 on sourcing.
They start doing 40 a week but end up still only listing 10 hours a week but now they’re sourcing and doing other random stuff 30 hours a week.
Suddenly cash flow is ruined, they’re overwhelmed by the giant pile of inventory they have acquired and feel drained because they’re spending more time on eBay but aren’t seeing the returns.
Fast forward 6 months, they’re broke and trying to offload their unlisted inventory for pennies in a bid to claw back something.

I believe so many people are hurting for money they are selling themselves to make ends meet. And it’s so easy prove able so many rare books cards memorabilia that only sell once or twice a year. There is literally 10 20 30 and so on of these super rare items listed as we speak. I always reinvent the way I sell but I don’t see an option rn just gotta wait this downturn out imo.

I sold on eBay before in 97 until about 2008. I was working a weekend job that paid well and it was more a hobby for me plus the extra money was nice. In the beginning everything I listed sold. But, it is hard work, sourcing items, listing, packing and mailing. I have since retired and thought about starting to resell again. I did enjoy it, especially finding those surprise items that go for big money.

I retired early as a chef to resell full time. I loved my job but no longer wanted to punch a clock day in and day out. My pension covered the bills so there wasn't a lot of pressure on me. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to stay motivated. When the alarm goes off at 6 am to go to garage sales I'm tempted to just turn it off and go back to sleep. Fortunately, I love the hunt, so I get my butt out of bed.

RUclips resellers really speeded up the process of making it much more difficult to resale. You have to hustle twice more now. I used tell others that reselling can be a stable income, but not anymore.
We might have another 5 yrs before the bubble pops. Keep your day job guys.
The real question is, should pickers like commonwealth given the opportunity, would they do it again, tell the world their secrets just to gain a bit through social media?

I used to sell on the side a little bit. I tend to not buy on ebay if I can get it elsewhere. I think unreliable sellers are a major problem. I just purchased an ac blower monday and it still hasn't shipped. The seller won't respond. I knew there was a chance as the seller only had 1 feedback but the account was activated in 2013 so I figured there was a shot. It was the only one that included the motor and fan/housing so that played in my decision. People don't want to sift through products and have to sift through sellers and then wait 7 to 10 days to receive their order. Certain htf items probably still have great sell throughs but the everyday item market on ebay appears to be close to dead.

You always put the best questions out there! 👍I am a full time reseller and love it! I retired from my full time marketing job about 8 years ago to go full time into my part time bakery business (wedding cakes, mostly.) Then came 2020 and the little virus that shut down the wedding industry, along with just about everything else. I was doing a little ebay and poshmark on the side part time. But when I had to start giving back $500-800 deposits on those wedding cakes, my husband and I knew we had to do something and quickly! So I sold everything to do with my bakery (mixers to spoons) and went head first into reselling. And we have never been happier or better off financially! We have paid off 2 vehicles and have NO credit card debt. And that took pre-planning before I retired initially.

Education is key instead of just copying what all the re-sellers say to look for. It's like highschool all over again with some of them copying off your math test. It's getting tiring them watching me pick up stuff and seeing if I put it down. For instance, I was looking at a Tommy Bahama shirt to buy for my friend who is leaving the Country and going to the the Tropics. It's getting annoying. Then I went to a junk store looking for paper. I saw some guy scanning every one of the plush (which is dirty and nasty) and about 75 of them. It's the new re-sellers that are driving everyone crazy AND I am one. They are acting so desperate. I would never depend on this full time.

I just went back to full time reselling this year after a couple decades of part time reselling. The key is to keep in mind what the rest of your life looks like. I quit full time reselling back in 2004 because of the precariousness of it. That was the year my youngest son was born and I just needed something consistent so that I could weather the summers (the summer slowdown has ALWAYS been a thing). Now that everyone is grown and gone, my home and car are paid off, and my bills are relatively small, I knew I could go back to full time. I've had a good year but there have definitely been a couple of scary patches but, having done this in the past, I know they will pass. I know I can do instacart, amazon flex (YUCK), or spark if things get really tight. Fortunately, that hasn't happened since I made the decision to go back to full time.
I know that this is a life choice that can be very chicken or feathers, but now that it's just me, it doesn't matter. The reselling bubble has popped a zillion times since the 1990s but here we all are so clearly the bubbles are coming from a bubble wand and there will be more.

IT IS SLOOOOOOOOW when it comes to the everyday items that used to sell during the covid era. If you put up a hot item, yes it will sell quickly. But looking at yours and other reseller videos, it seems like the sale prices on most items have come down a lot. Most items are going between 15-20 bucks. So, as a part timer, I'd need to have a ton of inventory listed to make it worthwhile with the effort i have been putting into it the last 4 years. Things seem to sit much longer before selling now and I'm not interested in taking over my basement with such small dollar items. I will keep selling, though I'm going to become way more picky on what I purchase going forward. I still love the hunt and the flip!

Considering how many $500 sales in a day I have been having lately I don't think ebay is dead at all. Reselling is tons of fun and it gives me the opportunity to meet people and establish business relationships and some new friends in the process. Actually I am afraid that I am having so much fun doing this, and making way better profits than I could in any investment, that I won't want to move to our house in the Philippines when my wife retires LOL.
One thing that gave me a blast recently is listing for sale the very first vinyl LP that I bought at the age of 14 some 42 years ago. Been a fulltime Ebay reseller since 3 days after Ebay was opened was reselling in a flea market before Ebay. I watch you tube videos mainly to see BOLO ideas. I feel most people stress over changes that happen on the platform. And boy has there been changes since the beginning. Ebay use to not be in your business at all. Biggest complaints is the changes and restrictions. I have adjusted to a very generic way of selling so most things Ebay throws out there doesn't really bother me much. I am very simple. The only thing that gets me sometimes is glitches. Never give up your business till you have earned the income a couple of years where it surpasses your current income. And know its not gonna be a set profit coming in all the time. There is slow downs at times. And know it takes constant listing and several thousand items in your store to keep it coming in regularly. Always have another income stream as well. I also sell Vinyl T shirts which brings in a nice income as well it makes up for slow downs in Ebay. Its a way of life and never quit learning. Start selling things you know and add other things till you get the hang of it so you don't lose money. Biggest thing buy low sell high. Find that honey hole and use it whenever you can.
