The Tesla guy is it going to be bringing the Model S catalytic converter next week.

At a yard sale a couple of years ago, some guy was trying to sell a really old, like 2003 Garmin GPS for $125. I told him it was too much. So he replied, "I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro using this!"
It's still just an old GPS/

This just happen to me at a charity ‘pay what you think’ yard sale, I was buying some old portable DVD player and I gave them $15 for it (not knowing if it worked mind you). The lady was almost offended by the amount and we go ‘well it’s kinda old technology, you can buy one that cheap online’. She goes ‘maybe on eBay but not Amazon’. I think the fact that you said you never dealt with these kind of things should've been your sign to not even touch it. I was surprised you offered anything
Yeah & especially with the size of it & all the things that could be missing off of it. Just goes to show no matter how long you've been in the business mistakes still get made.
I'd argue that's how you get to know about these things. I doubt Pete opened the store knowing so much about all these niche little things.
Sometimes taking a risk and jumping into something new is worth the potential loss if you learn more from it.
I'm also surprised he's never checking FBmarket place just to see what they go, even if the item for sale is not entirely local. Another data point can't hurt.
The classic "I'd like to start dealing with you guys" comment to try and get more money.
I have an IT business and in the 25 years I've been doing it, the people who dangle future business or claim they know people they can refer to us, come through somewhere arouind zero percent of the time. As expected, it's usually in the course of pricing a larger project. It may not be a fair in every case, but it's become somewhat or a red flag for me/ turn off that made me less likely to price aggressively or care if I got the work.
i love the dramatic pause he does when he knows he will accept the $$ offer but wants to make it seem hes giving it some thought.
Funny... Pete would have given $100 for that car. The other guy says "how about $50?"..... Pete sits quiet for 10 seconds pretending to think about it... 😂

Old man Tesla sold you a project. You live and you learn I suppose. We've all been caught lacking one time or another so don't feel too bad. Your knowledge on items, sale prices and profit etc is pretty good. Great video
The Tesla guy clearly wasn’t listening. Glad you said “My offer stands” You are the pro Pete.
I'm in electronics repair and hear ya brother. People not only don't understand what things are worth, they aren't putting a value on the amount of time you're spending with them, your overhead and then you having to resell it after. It was really nice of you to considering paying for something untested. You have a heart of gold sir!
I would have told the Tesla guy to take the part to a junk yard and see what they would offer. If I had this item I would throw it in the garbage. A learning moment. Love your show.
do you own a tesla?
Some people don't hold junk, and what I mean if they don't need it, it's trashed. How many people do you think trow good stuff away just because they don't want to go through trouble. I used to work in the moving industry, and people would tell us to put it in the street so someone would pick it up..whole bedroom sets t.vs radios, you name it. Ebay also charges you a percentage on the shipping amount. Most people do not realize that. You can actually loose money if it's a heavy weight and low price like $5.00 or less.
The fees are calculated on total after they add shipping and taxes, so you’re taking an even bigger hit since taxes in some states is quite high.
@@girlnextdoor0703 I used to sell quite a bit on Ebay. Had a lot of glass items and mechanical parts that I'd take a chance on by listing at low starting bids. Quite a few times items would surprise me with how high they would go. (Best was $1500.00 on a $2.00 starting bid) Some would go for opening bids. When they started chrging percentage, I quit taking the risk as some I ended up paying more in fees than what I got. I contacted Ebay and asked why and they said a few people charging like $125.00 dhipping with a buy it now of $1.00 for a $150.00 item to avoid fees. I told her fine, If you see those people, kick them off and leave us alone. She said they couldn't which I replied that you're TOO lazy and this is all about finding another revunue increase for your company. I told her you are actually going to loose revenue as I will no longer list heavy items that could go for low prices. She then told me to just raise the starting bid to cover the fees on the shipping. I did that one time and explained in the listing saying just that. They pulled all my auctions and said I could say that in the listings. LOL
eBay these days is such a scam compared to the mid 2000s. It's not even worth the average person to sell anything on there. It's all focused on secondary business.

$225 offer on the Tesla center counsel was way too high. I would offer $100 since it will cost more to list it, pack it, store it, etc. If it was a small item like a knife then the 50% off Ebay sold comp is good. But for a large item I would be way lower. Nobody is going to give him that kind of money for a used Tesla center counsel locally since they can get it for $200 at a junk yard.
Bad purchase for sure

I've known since I was an 8 year old in the 1980s that Pawn Shops are where you go if you want to get a quick and easy 50% of the resell value of your item. You're trading convenience and an assured sell for significantly less money than you'd get by taking the time and/or risk of selling it yourself. It's so strange to me that some people have a hard time wrapping their head around this simple concept.

Because it is worth gold ✨️ to them, that's the whole thing, it's worth gold to them and it's similar to when I go to a clients home and do Hoarding clean up, in fact you've seen our company (Steri-Clean) on the show hoarders if you've ever seen that show, we are the people who come in and clean it up and it NEVER fails, when we go into most of these homes, these people unfortunately believe their garbage to be worth so much, but when we go to assess the property or whatever it is that they are attempting to say is worth so much is usually and typically garabge and we throw it out. As a pawn person, such as yourself, you should know exactly 💯% what it means and I know the title of the video is a rhetorical type assertion, but we all know why they think it's worth gold, because it is to them. Thanks for the interesting content. Excellent stuff!

If that Ghost Busters theatre poster is printed on cardboard, it's not a real original. If it was glued to cardboard the value is gone. Check to make sure that it's a real poster with just a cardboard backing for support or a reproduction art piece. Normal sized posters come to the theater either rolled or folded.
I know that feeling when you buy something pre owned and when really inspecting it find flaws that I missed. I stopped making offers one some preowned items if I couldn’t see the item in person. I hope you can break even.
You win some, you lose some. People have to understand the wholesale/ reseller value when selling to you. You have to make money after you pay your bills and your employees. If it’s not worth it to you then people have to understand and they can try to unload it themselves.
I see it a lot on eBay. Like he said you can can list it for whatever you want but, does not mean it will sell for that. I collect sports cards and a common thing I see on eBay is really low value Michael Jordan cards and people are asking hundreds or thousands of dollars for a card that I know sells for less than 10 bucks. Just cause it is a Jordan does not mean it is some super valuable holy grail. I am sometimes convinced that people are using Michael Jordan cards to launder money through eBay. Some of the prices I see are absolutely insane.
27:20 Just selling basic items on eBay from my experience the buyers don't want to pay for shipping....everyone is spoiled because of Amazon free shipping. So after shipping cost and eBay cut of the action doesn't leave much of a profit margin.

I agree that you assume a lot of risk - but that shouldn’t cost someone else money when they are trying to sell something- most people are selling because they are in need- just get rid of the Tesla people LOL- I was screaming at you not to buy that center console- did you hear me
The guy that sold you, the Tesla council I knew was selling it for a reason and now you know the reason, the USB port was rusted and buggered up and the stain you’re never going to get out of it are 2 reasons why he was selling it. Also if I had a Tesla and need the center console I wouldn’t buy it; so I’m really sorry you got taken to the cleaners.
