- With short summers, a cold climate, and a landscape of lava fields and glaciers, Iceland's not the first place you'd link with food production.
But pioneering entrepreneurs are growing some surprising crops, and doing it sustainably.

Iceland has one HUGE advantage, unlimited geothermal energy (Very low cost).
Yes, thank you for repeating what was said in the video
@@Cannon952 they were emphasizing
And literally, nothing to eat. Except, maybe these algae.
It's not unlimited it's 24/7 energy but limited with production
@@bojanm986 Iceland has gigantic sheep farms and fish farms. They do depend on imports of fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. some of these can be grown under LED's if they so choose to invest in it. It's just a matter of costs, how high do you want your electric bill to be.
Soilent green is people!!
@Danthehistoryman You're just weird. There's no such thing as Soylent green
@Danthehistoryman Tim Walz thinks you're weird and so do i
Just a reference to the movie as in the film it was supposed to be sea algae they were eating. I'm a science fiction movie fan. Algae in real life has many uses.
@@Danthehistoryman You're still weird
@jeanclaudejunior maybe you're the weird one and I'm normal? Who knows.
blue hummus, blue cake icing.

Algae - the dinner of the dinner of my dinner
5 years later : Algae the dinner of everything
My sincere thanks for sharing it.
I would suggest sharing this algae idea 💡 with the Shell oil company, because if memory serves they were trying to make a type of bio diesel or fuel with algae.
Soylent Purple
I take algae oil, fantastic stuff, used it to replace cod liver oil
You have a weird engine in your car.
Yuck
Better than the bugs the BBC usually pushes
You do realise that insects have been part of diets around the world for millenia?
Luv Iceland luv to go there one day
2:41 "Energy, CO2, and water--that's all that's needed for this aquatic organism to grow." False. You stated that it's "rich in iron". Where does the iron come from...?
Yes, if you're a Marine Iguana on the Galapagos.
Of course, it can be.
I saw it in stardew valley.
Can algae be tea?
Only if you are brave enough.
Every area around the world should have one of these farms.
no.
@@dtex_zero why not?
@@lfeb Not everyones culture, food and traditions has to be slowly replaced in the name of climate communism.
If there is an actual market for it, fair enough. But i can promise people will not adopt it without you forcing it on them.
@@lfeb The Nederlands seem to have something similar, I'm not sure if it can be done sustainably. If yes then, expand expand.
Next up, get ready to drink sea water
Here we go! Soylent green!
But this is Soylent Blue. Soylent Green is ... _PEOPLE!_
Call it Avatar food.... 😂
Not 'umlimited' geothermal energy. Words have meaning - I remember when the BBC understood that.
60s bass drum?
Mushrooms don't need lighting to grow.
Nature is just beautiful 😊😊😊
Yum, I want an algae burger, medium rare, sail vous plait.
Spiyrulina
Might go well with breakfast. A yes from me.
If breakfast is a bottle of rum?
Algae is good for our food. Stop all this goofy nonsense. We don’t have food shortages in portion of the world. Why create them?
Add a little yellow food coloring and that blue become green!
You never see Triticeae crops, in any of these urban farms.
It is NOT hummus; hummus is made of cheakpeas That thing is made of algae Come up with your name
I’m very curious what this tastes like. Also, I am curious of the costs for these things. That thermal energy is a lucky thing, but you still have to capture it and convert it etc. is it economically viable or is it this really expensive novelty thing?
No. Stop pretending living in poverty is in vogue. Stop trying to lower our quality of life.
As long as you put enough sugar in it, people will have no trouble eating it ;)
❤
Blue humus is designed by cookie monster 😅
Keep your sustainable blue grass, I will keep my old fashioned steak.
Feeling threatened bud?
Your steak is killing you .
ok Count Dracula.
I'll be eager to try no matter what these weirdos say
Same here! I have tried seaweed earlier and gotta say, despite my initial hesitation, i actually ended up liking it a lot.
Now I am more open to experimenting with food.
Why not use grass?
sustainably ?? how much electricity needed for this ?
It’s Iceland so it’s renewable.
bro didnt watched the video
Iceland gets all of its electricity from hydro and geothermal and has plenty to spare.
Fascinating stuff! Not for my palate though 😂
Great idea geo thermal free energy
look out world learn
4:30 so this is what the astronauts were eating in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Whilst I understand what they want to do, it's probably better as an animal food instead. Unless they can make it more palatable in the future. But then again, when we get to Mars, anything edible would be food, not like they can order a mcdonalds 😂
But do these vegetables have the same nutrients as the ones growing on sun and soil?
I believe so. The method is nowhere near new.

Better grow weed natural
What we will be eating on Mars...
Great so we are eating pleco food
Only works if they make a chocolate dink out of it
Why not.
“You veel eat ze algae and be happy with nothing!”
Why no. Changing weather patterns are making it harder to grow traditional food products.

Has algae fuel reduced cost enough for economic usage ?🤣
In Iceland it has. There is also ThanetEarth in the U.K.
@@davecooper3238 are you weird according to Tim Walz?
@@jeanclaudejuniorHe hasn’t said anything to me.
No thanks.
If seaweed can become food, why not algae? It is totally one's liberty what one chooses to eat or drink as long as it is legal in the country you reside, so if you live in india, nobody can stop you from eating 🐄💩 and drinking 🐄🍺Dr Manoj Mittal from Haryana, India, is the greatest Hindu gourmet and pride from |ndia.
What about the stinky shark 🤮
I’ll have steak
ok Dracula.
Bugs and algae , Good enough for the peasants……..
This video is full of buzzwords, lacks any real detail to make it credible. Like are you going to back up the claim that it’s ‘carbon negative’??
Also “it uses AI”- how?? Just mentioning these things does not mean they are doing anything groundbreaking or benefitting the climate
Is that why so many deises cause people keep eating dangerous stuff
You are a moron 🎉
Did you mean "diseases"? Also how is this dangerous? 😂
Also diseases are caused when virus jump from animals to humans and bats being a primary source. In what way is a plant dangerous? It's not like they are having poison ivy.

@@davecooper3238exactly! Climate change will force us all humans (at least the rest 99% of us) to adapt to newer means of food.
Even if not for climate change, it's always good to be flexible with food as we may never know when it can come in handy when it comes to survival.
@@phoenix-radar I am with you on that. Where I live I am seeing a greater area of crops having to be plowed in. I have also suffered. My small orchard has been affected by. An overall fall in cropping.

Healthy food. Eat by Japanese and Korean man or woman that turned into nori. Eaten by jellyfish too, one of living things that immortal.
I have never had Korean food but I would love to try!
bbc, grow mushrooms there
Not at all sure the BBC is actively involved in food production. What they appear to be good at is encouraging clicks, comments & income.
If you guys want to go ahead and eat crypto farmed plant dust, go ahead. Can you just leave everyone else alone, thanks.
Did anyone suggest you are going to be forced to eat. Any more than the Golden Arches force you to eat the whole menu.
@@davecooper3238 have you been around vegans or people that push this stuff?
There has been massive propaganda campaigns and funded research to try get all this stuff in shops for years and force consumers to change. If you don't believe there is a large minority of well funded activists promoting this stuff and demonising meat/dairy consumption you've been living under a rock.
So yes, people are trying to force people to change their eating habits, in the name of their political ideology.
@@dtex_zeroYes I have been around vegans. I have a vegetarian daughter but I haven’t had it pushed on me. Sorry to hear you haven’t had the same experience.
@@davecooper3238 People can choose how they want to live their life. Large groups of the public have had the same experience as me from Vegan friends or family or television or the studies coming out of paid research groups. (not all of course, i met people that kept it to themselves)
A lot of them it's not just a personal choice. It's a political idelogy and ethically superior position they use to lecture people with.
