Voice artists sue tech company for 'stealing their voices' | BBC News

  • A couple in the US have filed a lawsuit against tech company Lovo after they allegedly found AI copies of their own voices online.
"A tech company stole our voices, made AI clones of them, and sold them possibly hundreds of thousands of times," Linnea Sage said.
The firm has not yet responded to their claims or the BBC's requests for comment.
Lovo co-founder Tom Lee has previously said its voice-cloning software only needs a user to read about 50 sentences to create a faithful clone.

@@WojciechowskaAnna Using inspiration from other art is a false equivalence to generative AI. A better comparison would be music sampling, which requires copyright and royalties to the original owner. The morphing that generative AI does to input is only partially destructive to the source material (just like music sampling), which means part of the original work is directly used in the output.

This is what happens when technology precedes the laws that govern it. BY the time the law catches up, it's too late to reign in the tech. This is nothing new and will only get worse, especially with AI which will dramatically change how the world operates. The public has access, the corporations have access, and if it can make money it will be used exploitatively. The concept of individuality will blur as AI replicates how we look, talk, move, etc. Welcome to the future. Good luck fighting it.

I'm supporting human voice actors 100%. Human voice belong to human, and human voice works such as narration, voice over and other types of work used by human voice must be done by human voice, it's absolutely their rights (in context). AI have no right to occupy and use human voice for voice works, even IT can do that. And to be more clear, this is not about two humans have similar voices, that'd be a difference case (me and my brother have almost the same voice, but we don't work in voice acting). Those companies that using AI voice generators for voice works should be sued to bankrupt.

It’s trivial for the companies to remove those voices and retrain with voices of people they pay. Getting a couple hours of an average generic voice like theirs is cheap. The market for highly paid voiceovers is mostly gone, unless they are distinctly recognizable celebrity voices; even those can be trained on by hiring people with voices very similar to those celebrities like OpenAI did with a Scarlett Johannesson sound-alike voiceover artist.

Yeah why would we support a technology with the potential to vastly reduce the cost of basically everything. We now live in an age where I can generate beautiful artwork for my weekly D&D game for free. I can put together a professional sounding radio advert for a local church fund raising event without spending hundreds hiring in a voice artist. I can have ChatGPT generate code, work up project plans and generally act as a small team of professional producers and coders for the unreal video game I've been trying to build for years. This is amazing, incredible tech that has the potential to completely change the game of human economic and creative output. Yes there are dangers and we're going to need to quickly build an economy that doesn't have human labour as its foundational component (though its debatable if that's really been true for some time). But we can't go back, we need to go forward and find the ways this tech can improve the world while mitigating the short term downsides.

The trouble is that the audio recordings were likely used for training the AI to give it the ability to mimic those voices. Mimicry is a grey area in copyright law. I have had my own creative ideas taken from online and used in very popular and well-known fiction, for which I never received a single cent or acknowledgement (and which shall remain nameless as I have no desire for conflict). However, they can simply say they changed the idea 'sufficiently' to make it original. Every creative idea stems from pre-existing material. In the end, yes it would have been nice to receive an acknowledgement but mimicry is flattery. I am glad someone found my creative input inspiring and valuable. The problem arises when people depend on the primary material for their bread and butter.

AI is going to replace all of us at some point. Voice actors are the tip of the iceberg. Our only means of fighting this is to identify the AI products that are using stolen identities (voices/ faces/ performances) and not purchase those products. For that we need to have complete transparency in where those identities come from and if the people have been compensated. Any company not being transparent should be put out of business. Best wishes to these voice actors!

They are still trained on human voices.
Anyway, nothing good will come from this technology, it will just be used to give people personalized fake news, misinformation, advertising, political propaganda, porn etc
I one thing I am I sure of about the future of ai, it will harm society hugely and decrease freedom/living standards.

its unfortunate that this lady believes that by being a voice actor, that is somehow considered a creative endeavour, it should have been entirely obvious to anyone that voice actors would be the first to be replaced by AI. people with far more skills invested into their careers are going to be overtaken by AI, lawyers, surgeons and even scientists, I really say this with a heavy heart, but a voice actor has not invested much to moan about.
