Despite being filmed as a "short", I appreciate this being uploaded as a proper video. It makes the viewing experience so much better having access to volume controls and being able to rewind/fast-forward
He definitely didn't mean to upload it as a normal video, he just went over the one minute limit, so RUclips kicked it over into the normal video section of his channel, or it was uploaded incorrectly.
I've always found Lippman process fascinating. I first read about it in a youth science magazine 30 years ago but could never quite imagine how it would actually look, until recently peope have been recreating this technique and showcasing in blogs and on RUclips.
I always love ur videos there so relaxing and informative. Thank you so much for the time and effort put into the videos. Keep up the great work we appreciate it.🙂👍
Hi I was wondering if you can do a video on self adhesive tapes and how they work, I’ve been quite fascinated on the kind use for medical purposes and curious on how they work. Thank you and I love these videos you make. I hope to see more soon.🤔
The Lippmann process!! That was the best, short explanation of it that I've heard! Basically that you fit the interference part in under a minute! Something that's surprising to me is that the emulsion Lippmann used was apparently ultra fine and thus had a very high resolution (on the order of microfilms). In fact, this is true of many plate-based photographic techniques. But I'm not sure exactly why. Great video!!
A friend of mine bought me a copy of your book, The Things We Make, and I was reading in the second chapter about the invention of color photography - then read the about the author section in the back and subscribed to your RUclips channel - just to see that you uploaded a short about the exact part of your book I just read!
Trimming fractions of a second between words would have made this short enough. It's always such a struggle to get a vid to less than 1 minute, but YT rules are strict. One frame over a minute and it's not a short.
Smarter every Day put a beautiful blue butterfly wing under an electron microscope and were surprised to see it had no colour at all, instead using this method to cancel out all other colours except blue, using ridge lines spaced out at exact distances. Nature operating at incredible tolerances. Great channel, Bill.
Trim a few seconds off this and get a much wider audience. It's ridiculous that the 1 minute mark is so hard, though. By the way, I love your stuff, and have for years. Keep it up!
I guess you haven't accepted that most of humanity is doomed, just like all the movies, only a small amount will carry on after lets hope it's an intellectual supremacy otherwise man is going back to the stone age
Hate being a child, but I remember seeing a video way way back early in time. I see we don't put many videos out. RUclips isn't getting better content. Kindly share more things. Please?!
Bill, who invented the modern shopping cart? "Stack them up" is one thing, but who made the jump to "fold them up inside of themselves so they can stack horizontally?" It's been around for as long as I've been alive, and yet it's such a weird idea, and yet it works
Suggestion - Put your face in the thumbnail of all your videos. I think I've skipped past a few of them in my recommendations cause I didnt realise they were you!
Good information presented well, thank you. Can I request a topic, i have an old torch that no longer clicks on/off, i have dismantled it and there is two cream plastic peices that fit together, reminds me of a biro but without the long shaft. 3 different size springs and another long, narrow spring attached to a disc that has a protrusion sticking out the other end of the disc. The long narrow spring is the part that touches the battery, the cream 'pen like' parts are at the opposite end that is covered with the soft rubber that is pushed to operate the torch. I can't figure out how the springs alow the torch to click on and of. Any help from you or yout team of subscribers would be greatly received 🔦🔦
Hey @engineerguy you dooin ok? Maybe your new channel could be dedicated to dads. i love your presentation. Makes me want to try things. Maybe assign projects or work shop duties to some followers...Ah well. hope your book is doing ok. Best wishes. damnwereinatightspot, Alaska

Btw you can take the video id part of the short's url and paste it into youtube's normal format to get a normal plsyer to play whatever you want...

firefox has an extension for that, "better youtube shorts", gives you seek bar, pause, play etc.
@@donotlike4anonymus594Thank you for being creative and an engineer.
As if it was the intention
No matter the duration of the video, I’m always hyped for my main man Bill.
Yes! So glad to see you again.
I think this is my favorite of your shorts yet. Thank you!
Being a photographer this is similar to how circular polarizers work. Great to see you making videos again
You are back!!! Thank you 🙏🎉

Bill, you need to post much more often
I’d love to: it takes quite a while to prepare the videos.
Those pesky Undergrads need something to help with I’m sure! :)
I have always worked with undergrads: I have two excellent ones right now.
Welcome back to RUclips, EngineerGuy!
...whoa. Welcome BACK, Engineer Guy!!
Happy to see your videos again
educator/communicator par excellence.
I’ve subscribed to you since before my now 14 year old son had learned to walk. I’m always so happy to see a new video from you. Thanks!

A new subscribet also..
You the man engineer man
I'd love to see how a photo like that is made
We are working on a longer video about that
@@engineerguyvideo I'm looking forward to it!
@@engineerguyvideoAre you rewarded for your effort, time, knowledge, filming equipment, etc.? Genuine question.

Great video!!
You needed an ultra fine emulsion to create the layers; this was also one of the reasons that it needed so much light (if I recall correctly)
Gah! The legend is back!

Enjoy the book ... there is a longer 4-part companion series that goes with the book.
Ok

New subscriber here, you have some nice educational videos. Thank you.
... some ...?
What's going on with the low engagement?
Wake up babe, new engineer guy post
What is name of this phenomenon?

Shorts are GARBAGE
I only watched this because it was a real video

Is there a long version of this? I refuse to watch "shorts". I don't even know why this is in my feed. It should be blocked. 👎🏼
There isn’t yet. Sorry it showed up in your feed: notifications are currently not sent for shorts to subscribers.
You remind me a little bit of Don Lincoln, @fermilab
