But the GT3 will hold it's value much better and will always be more prestigious and exciting at cars n coffee. Not to mention the exhaust note!! Side note - it is a bit cringe when people fit super sticky rubber on their street driven cars, and end up with more wear, more noise and no useable performance on the street when driven legally. That's what a second set of wheels is for..
Would love to see a Turbo S with the Sport Design Aero Kit, sport suspension, and the lightweight package from the factory (all factory options). Put that on Cup 2's and it is faster at virtually any track I bet.

Also, the turbo doesn't have that ridiculous rear wing. In this order for me: Turbo S, GT3 Touring, GT3.
Steve Sutcliffe is hands down the best automobile reviewer working today. Anything that he reviews, I will watch. I was hooked back in 2015 when he gushed about the Cayman GTS. That review is legendary.
win easily?? really lol ...so basically nothing in it and the GT3 had huge advantage in proper tyres for the day...so the turbo would actually be the faster if matching tyres
If the TurboS was on the Cup2's, wouldn't that have been a fairer comparison of track times? I imagine the Turbo must have given a second away being on Goodyears.
A second is being kind over that lap. These cars are tested as they come out the box with the tyres that they are developed on. I haven’t driven a 992 GT3 or 992 Turbo S yet but having done plenty of miles in the 991 variants the difference between them is chalk and cheese.
On the Porsche build sheet you can get lighter race seats, carbon fiber roof, and lighter windows on the Turbo S. Then put same rubber on Turbo S to see a rematch. I am very curious of this. Also on a wet track could you push the AWD Turbo S harder? It seems like every time I go to a track weekend it rains.
Porsche love their cars setting crazy lap times, but even if it wasn't as quick I'd love that GT3 for the glorious sound. Would probably still pick a 981 GT4 over it though...
Why does Steve keep telling the GT3 s PDK is motorsport derived? I thought all motorsport 911s including Cup cars are on a 6 speed sequential box and not pdk ?🤔
I had a passenger lap in a 997 cup which was sequential but I think newer cup cars have switched to paddle shifters and dual clutch. I think Porsche say everything in a gt3 is motorsport derived, sounds good in a brochure but won't feel anything like the shift in a cup car I would think. Everything about the shift action would be much harder and immediate in a cup car, grippier clutch, lighter flywheel, faster shift tuning potentially, variable gear sets. I'm sure it's derived somehow but to suggest it feels the same as a cup car gearbox is well, marketing.
@@TheChannel1978 current cars also operate sequential dog boxes (with flappy paddles on the steering) but Not PDK. PDK on competition cars are a no no due to added weight and reliability issues during hard endurance track running. I think what Steve would have ment was the gt3 s ratios might be similar to Cup cars , at least 1to6, 7 being an overdrive ratio
Results from comparisons where cars wear different tyres / different compounds fall immediately off the cliff. To that one have to add that the test track in question favours the GT3… Regardless and once more: ultimate times do interest me little as well as straight line speed: the GT3 had already won before the test took place! As always thank you for posting.

There is far more than 0.5 seconds on the tires alone. I have a set of sport Cup2s and a set of Pilot Sport 4 summer tires (comparable to those goodyears). There is a 2 second difference on a 1 minute 10 second track for me.
I suppose I would have to say: 1. A track focussed car on near racing tyres, aero, stripped out interior and other lightening works, is likely to be better and faster on a track. This is not a surprise. 2. Just to even things up, if an Porsche fitted Cup 2s, a lairier wing and some fancy front splitter, how would the times be then? What are we trying to test...what a manufacturer supplies for its intended use or, what can be achieved with a little tweaking? If it's the latter then ask Porsche what they think of the validity of the test. 3. What if an owner wants the ease of a Turbo...a road focussed car, but is prepared to put on Cup 2s and a GT3 type aero set up for a bit more track-ness? Might they achieve an even better compromise and a closer result on a trackday type situation (which many users will never exploit anyway) I'm just not sure what a test like this shows other than a purely academic time and the interest in how close a fast luxury car can get to a track focussed machine. It's like those tests that compare a 4x4 on street tyres vs one supplied by the manufacturer on aggressive off road tyres. Turbo S is a versatile and amazing car. It's achievement is the more impressive on this particular track.
The double wishbones on the front must be a huge improvement on the GT3. Another 0.5 seconds will be shaved off with the arrival of the RS in the future
Intriguing comparison but the result was not unexpected. Weight and tyres made all the difference as usual. Couple of questions for you Steve. 1) Did the Turbo seats hold you in place properly, or were the 918 optional seats in the GT3 much more secure? Would a change of seat option have made any difference to the result? 2) Had both cars been on say Michelin 4S (80% road tyre) rather than the GT3 being on Cup 2's (80% track tyre) would the GT3 have been overwhelmed by the Turbo's engine do you think? I'm very fortunate in that my GT3 Komfort Leight (the forgotten model after the Clubsport and Touring) with a manual gearbox, poverty option spec to save weight, with standard Turbo seats arrives mid November. Of course a manual car loses a half car length with each gear change compared to a PDK, thus my spec will be much slower than the Turbo but I'm wondering how much more fun and enjoyment you would have had with a manual and how much slower on the timed lap you would be?
With the same Cup 2's I bet the Turbo S would match the GT3's time. I'd love to see both cars (with the same tires) head to head on a bigger track, where the GT3 aero can do its thing and the Turbo S power counts for even more. Laguna Seca or Portimao would be perfect.

Screaming 9000RPM is heaven! GT3 All Day!
On the same tires the turbo S would be quicker. No doubt.
I’d have the touring GT3 all day long
As a manual 🙌
im so glad auto express did these no one has done this comparison before
My favorites supercars. They're so pretty. I call them supercars anyway. I'd love to see these two go at it at Anglesey.
Brilliant review as always! However, I still think the tires made a difference. Would love to see both on Cups, and I bet the result will change 🤗
turbo s with better pdk, cup 2s and a huge rear wing
Track for karting🤔
so basically with the same tires, the Turbo S is the at least as quick if not quicker as the GT3.
Different cars going extremely fast in two very different ways.. I'd have both if I could.
Great show Steve 👍🏻
Tell as what we don’t know not that GT3 is faster on track than turbo s. I real world Turbo S is faster sorry… and for normal driver…
I've been waiting for this... in case I win the euromillions next week and have to choose xD
the Tubro was always porsches best car with the highest potential nothing replaces torque
torque available everywhere
Great review, Steve!!!👍🙂 If you were going to order a 911 GT3 Touring would you go for the manual or semi auto?🤔
Both on michelin. why test with different tires???????
Tests are done as the cars are designed and delivered by Porsche.
On the Porsche build sheet you can get lighter race seats, carbon fiber roof, and lighter windows on the Turbo S. Then put same rubber on Turbo S to see a rematch. I am very curious of this. Also on a wet track could you push the AWD Turbo S harder? It seems like every time I go to a track weekend it rains.
..... would love to see that repeated on similar rubber. Sure, the GT3 would still be the better track car but maybe not the fastest....
Sutcliffe and Harris are by far the best Guys out there ❤
Love it
Porsche love their cars setting crazy lap times, but even if it wasn't as quick I'd love that GT3 for the glorious sound. Would probably still pick a 981 GT4 over it though...
How is the GT3 gearbox "Motorsport Derived" when a Cup ran runs a pnumaticaly shifted sequential dog box?
1st time viewer…. great presentation. Now subbed.
I wanted just to say that the 992 turbo (not s) at the nurburgring was catching up with a gt3 rs, i don't know what the turbo s would do then...
On the street the awd and mass of torque would be so much fun
So much want for that GT3
That ladies and gentleman is how to drive!
Do you reckon the cup2 would take 0.5 off the Turbo S time?
Great review as always
I've driven hundereds of laps round Llandow and I can tell you 42.2 is mind blowing...👏👏👏👌 GT3 please, Would if I could ! Steve Sutcliffe & Chris Harris favourite motoring jerno's !
Cup 2s on the Turbo S and it should be on par on this track?
On a more open track you think the gt3 would do better? I would’ve thought the overall power of the turbo would be an advantage on a more open track. And i wouldn’t say it blew it away
I think even a set of Ps4s would put the turbo s in the same time as the gt3... I still prefer the gt3, but you can't deny the turbo s capabilities.
I'm getting the Turbo S. 😊
Superb. Time difference just in the tyres alone though?
Steve is my man watching him ever since 997 gt3 was new.💪💪
There is far more than 0.5 seconds on the tires alone. I have a set of sport Cup2s and a set of Pilot Sport 4 summer tires (comparable to those goodyears).
There is a 2 second difference on a 1 minute 10 second track for me.
kind of crap that you don't use the same tires, its not the car at all then.
I suppose I would have to say:
Might they achieve an even better compromise and a closer result on a trackday type situation (which many users will never exploit anyway)
I'm just not sure what a test like this shows other than a purely academic time and the interest in how close a fast luxury car can get to a track focussed machine.
Every 992 variant has double wishbone
Steve and Andy Pilgrim ... by far best two track reviewers .
On the same tyres over one lap .. my guess would be turbo.
I wonder what the results would have been on the same tires.
9:02 why the driver is blurred?
What watch is Steve wearing?
Great video, great comparison. Well done 👍
2.7? you mean 1.9
Brilliant vid. Why's the GT3 1500KG?
Does that mean the GT3 Touring is also quicker than the Turbo S ??
GT3 has Double Wish Bone suspension too! Which is a……… “Double Plus” for me. 😎👍🏽
Both are dream cars. The GT3 is slower but cooler. Id go for cool with a cage ;)
