If You Think Biden and Harris Were Weak on the Border, Think Again | NYT Opinion

  • Immigration is a top issue on voters’ minds. When people talk about President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s handling of immigration, they usually say something like: Record numbers of migrants poured across the border over the past three years, and Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris ignored the crisis until recently. They were weak on the border. Or worse, inept.
I wanted to know how the president and vice president could mess this up so badly. What in the world were they doing?
The Opinion video above tells the little-known story of how Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris worked behind the scenes to get the border crisis under control. I found that they acted strategically, out of the spotlight, since the earliest days of the administration. They even bucked their own party and fulfilled Republican wishes, though they’ve gotten little credit for it.
Their hard work finally paid off when illegal crossings dropped significantly this year.
In politics, there’s the story that gets told in public, and then there’s what really happened behind closed doors. In this case, those two narratives are worlds apart. And Ms. Harris is paying for it. When polled, a majority of voters said they believed Donald Trump would handle immigration better than Ms. Harris.
If voters knew how Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris actually handled the border crisis, they’d most likely have a different opinion of which candidate could be trusted on this cornerstone issue.

I agree. Where has the New York Times been during the last four years of the GOP's fake outrage that Biden and Harris were not doing enough at the border? This is irresponsible reporting, and why people are turning away from mainstream media. Harris was not the "border czar"; she was tasked to investigate the root causes of migration. As usual, Democrats are bad at messaging, while the GOP just pumps out disinformation. You had a responsibility, New York Times and you failed.

Its also a failure on the Harris campaign that they just ignored all of this. If Harris talks about this when asked about immigration, especially during the presidential debate, the media would talk about this too. Instead, all Harris talked about regarding immigration was that Trump blocked a bipartisan immigration bill, almost nothing of any of these accomplishments nor the lowered immigration caused by these policies.

It’s more obvious when you look at news & media but people don’t have to be brainwashed to have a certain belief that’s trending or endorsed by desperate celeberities. The problem I have is when a lot of people who don’t live in southern state or work in construction or any job that has an increasing number of illegal immagrants dismisses it as misinformation or non existent because it’s not being reported. I don’t see the crime that illegal immigrants have committed and I believe that even the strictest border policies isn’t going to stop the high level crime from taking place I just can’t stand it when (usually liberals) or politicians want to display statistics that contradict what I’ve actually had to see; I don’t hate them I just think of The Bill Hicks Comedy Special. “Go Back to Bed America, you’re Government is Back in Control. I have no doubt in my mind that Biden was as good at being President as he was bad at communicating it. I had to do my own research on this topic when I noticed that nobody was talking about Guatemalan and Honduran migration anymore (Harris's primary area of focus) and was shocked to learn how much better the situation is there now. I think Harris still feels wounded by the Lester Holt interview and that has made it difficult for her to stand up for her work on this issue. The media shares some responsibility here, too. If you're doing a good job of governing, nobody notices. Even truly groundbreaking legislative achievements like the first climate bill EVER, the CHIPS Act and the infrastructure bill are not as good in the short-term as someone screaming about hordes of illegals pouring through the southern border. A comedian can then make jokes about Latinos invading with a crude sexual metaphor at a Nazi rally.
Although the same Republicans who opposed those bills were fine with taking the money and the credit when all those bills created jobs. But even the strong economy is still "prices not the same as under Trump" or "interest rates too high" or you mean...before the huge international crisis that killed over a million Americans and that continues to cost the American economy a great deal in lost worker hours that Trump was key in making so bad?
My local coffee shop has closed early twice in the last few months due to multiple 20-year-olds getting sick for weeks with Covid.
Democrats: good at governing, bad at messaging. But especially Biden. Could you even imagine Trump trying to pull off something like this instead of his purely brutal methods?

Those are things in the past you can never take back. Ieath is permanent and you can never bring back the lives Biden and Harris took in taking forever to fix the border. It's a Day 1 issue and they failed. Kamala failed because she was just too inexperienced to do the job. Trump has already 4 years of Presidential experience bad or good. I'd rather have an accountant with 4 years of experience than an accountant coming in Day 1 not knowing what they're doing and messing up my finances. We are not America's guinea pigs. After the initial decline in May 2022, the graph shows a rise to 17k in June, 25k in August and almost 35k in September. It seems that the graph has been presented in a way that leaves out a part of the picture, which could make it seem one-sided. There is a further decline in November to just 7k, but in April there is another spike of 25k.
Overall, this should indicate to you that he selectivly chose to only show this portion of the graph, because the other portion of the graph doesn't support his theory.
While the policy may have had some impact, it seems to have been short-lived. By selectively presenting parts of the graph, he gives the impression that the impact was more long-lasting than it actually was.

Incumbent parties have a lot more work to do during campaigning. From juggling current administration to campaigning to turning out effective work. It's a lot. Imagine all that and VP Harris to plunge into a 107 campaign out of nowhere. It's unprecedented and honestly, quite unbelievable what she pulled off. Compare that to trump that all he has to do is show up and talk rubbish and sway to Ave Maria for 40 minutes.

Harris already said the covid pricings on goods are still upheld by corporations even when we're past COVID recession. The price you paid in 2020 is still being the same now even when corporations have bounced back. That's why you're still paying high and that's why she said she'll go after corporations that's price gouging. Inflation is already super low at 2%. Those are things in the past you can never take back. I understand death and no matter what, you can never bring back a life no matter how long it took to see this change. Although this is good information, death is permanent and you can never bring back the lives Biden and Harris took in taking forever to fix the border. @windowsVD 13 дней назад

This is basically 16 minutes of complete word salad by highlighting superfluous things and anecdotes with little proof that their policy actually worked long term. The first graph claims that Venezuelan border crossings were reduced to less than 5k per month thanks to Biden's "astonishing" diplomatic negotiations with southern countries to regulate the flow of Venezuelan migrants. Yet in the second graph, it immediately jumped back to 17k and up just 2 months later? What happened? Even with all of Biden and Harris's policies, illegal immigration was STILL noticeably higher than previous administrations in the latter half of 2024 according to the graph shown in this video. And yeah, this video never addresses the fact that they undid Trump's border policies and led to a record number of border-crossings and migrant crime. Not to mention the fact that democrats opposed voter ID laws during the election, because nothing says being tough on immigration like making it easier for them to vote illegally in national elections.
Very telling that according to this video, Biden only got tough on migrant crossings in June 2024, you know, the month of his first debate with Trump. It's almost as if he wanted to appear tough on immigration only when it was close to re-election because everyone knew that it was a contentious issue. But ignore your eyes because Biden's administration was secretly just as tough on illegal immigration as Trump's! It was just invisible and we just couldn't explain it to you with tangible proof until now!

One of the biggest things that people forget is that being found to cross the border illegally means that you have to wait to enter legally for much longer than that person stayed in the US. (Up to ten times the year then spent in the first place, I believe.) It used to be much easier for people to *leave*, but now that risks being found out and being barred entry in the future make that a scary proposition.

In 2017 when I retired I took a part time job in a small, unfamiliar city. I was baking, part time as a way off learning the ins and outs of the town, while working side by side with a crew of Latino workers. Nothing new for me as I had taught culinary arts at a college and cooked in the restaurant industry for years. What I learned there upset and shocked me. All of the Latinos had social security numbers as they were recorded by the owner/manager of the restaurant. Later I learned that funding to verify those numbers as authentic was not available. Now 7 years later and many fraught political revelations; the GOP doesn't want our agencies funded so they can say they are observing the law but allow business to pocket profits.
The saddest part of this story is the stress on the faces of the guys I worked with. They lived together in a broken down trailer in a broken down trailer park that had siding around its perimeter so the community wouldn't have to see the shabbiness of the place. A place where misery lived in a city where others could live believing they were lawful and good citizens. This is the true face of who we are as most of us benefit from this system.

It's actually not, it's barely scratching the surface.
The guy omitted a lot of information to try and spin his narrative.
The most egregious example is Strategy 3. He's talking about the humanitarian parole expansion- CHNV- He shows you a chart about the drop off of Venezuelan migrants, slow rollout. CHNV was fully implemented Jan '23. through executive action which allowed up to 30,000 migrants from the countries of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to be flown into the United States on the dime of the US taxpayer. Tens of billions of dollars
-Since the expansion the DHS has flown in over 520,000 migrants total.
-DHS recently had to shut the program down in June, when they "noticed" that for every 30 migrants, there was only 1 sponsor. These numbers indicated that there was not only MASSIVE FRAUD, but potential HUMAN TRAFFICKING facilitated by our own US government. It's garbage, can't believe this guy called it creative.
So, in 2023 there was a small drop in encounters at the Southern border (2.7 mil to 2.3, both record shattering years) but total encounters increased to 3.2 mil (air, Northern border, sea). On top of the 3.2 mil, CHNV flew in 360,000 that first year.
To put this in perspective, under the 4 years under Trump, there were only 1.95 mil border encounters.
If you guys want me to debunk the rest of this video, let me know.
      Cute video though
