  • This gluten free seitan style roast is a great vegan meat substitute for anyone transitioning to a plant based diet, or for anyone that has been vegan for years and is just looking for something tasty to eat :-)
It is super easy to make and tastes delicious hot or cold.
I like to use it on sandwiches or eat it with mashed potatoes and gravy!

Just made this Anja with black beans and navy beans. I had no brown rice flour so I used wholemeal spelt (so not gluten free) but it's awesome! Thanks for another fantastic vegan meal. I have fallen into the trap of using meatless substitutes as we miss the meals we use to have but I've been encouraged by your recipes especially as they are so low in fat. So well done Anja! You're a legend!

I'm so excited to find this! I have been very high raw vegan for about 8 months and never buy store bought vegan meat substitutes! I was interested in the Seitan as an option because I can make that at home but I just recently figured out that I have Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity! It's awful! Literally within a day or two of me eating wheat or having a vegan beer I want to jump in front of a bus because I am so depressed! I don't have celiac disease, but this gluten sensitivity can be happening to 30% of all people and they may not even know it! Especially if you eat wheat all the time! I didn't figure out until I went high raw and stopped eating bread, but I would "splurge" every 3-5 weeks and within a day or two I would have so much depression and anxiety that I would just want to jump out of my skin! In my research I have found that it can be linked to depression, anxiety, panic attacks, mood disorders, bipolar and even schizophrenia! So please, if anyone is struggling with brain fog or mood disorders, please try going gluten free for 2 weeks! I am always feeling better within a week of getting it out of my system! So if you can't figure out what is going on with your mood, you should definitely try gluten free! It might not be your problem, but it would be the most simple fix if you figured out that it was! I really hope this helps someone! I wish you all the best of health! Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe as well!

I tried this recipe last night, and am giving it a big thumbs up. I made a couple changes, for example, I used pinto beans and I subbed vegan Worcestershire sauce and a dash of sea salt instead of tamari. All and all it's a fantastic recipe and has inspired me to several new dishes coming soon in my own household. Thanks for sharing!

@@cookingwithplants I wonder if you have ever experimented with Konjac flour as opposed to Wheat Gluten to make Seitan? Konjac flour (used a lot by Keto people and available where Keto products are sold) is a fantastic source of fibre. One tablespoon absorbs 2 cups of water. I tried to make a meat substitute using it...and mushrooms. It wasn't bad -- but don't have it perfected yet.

Thank you for making a gluten free plant meat. I am looking up how to make my own because the commercial vegetarian food industry has no loyalty to it's gluten free customers. A company will be gluten one month and then the next you will read on the back of their package and behold: "Contains wheat."
I'm done. 💯Making my own stuff more often from here on. Thank you for sharing and showing the way.

Will think about this recipe. I do realize that I've been gaining weight for eating too much gluten foods. I do eat gluten-free alot. Longest to be gluten free is 2 days. Hard for me cause my mom and brother say we don't have problems with gluten. But I wanna eat more gluten-free foods like you don't believe. I'm mostly vegan wanna be a complete vegan. I do eat beans, lentils, whole grains like quinoa, rice of many kinds, corn, and potatoes for protein. Also tofu and chickpea tofu also known as Burmese tofu. Along with nuts and seeds. But my brother is basically putting my health and diet in Jeopardy cause he LOVES gluten rich foods like seitan, pastas, etc. I have no choice cause he gets nasty about it. But will keep this recipe in mind and hope they probably don't notice. 😄 looks delicious!

It would be so helpful to have empirical volumes, not weight, for Canadians (ie: 1 cup, 2 Tbsp)

Carmen St-Denis nobody cares about Canadians

I wouldn't say that about Canadians, but I would certainly say that the US "Cup" measurements are shit and inaccurate

Seitan is by definition made with vital wheat gluten. It's not a generic term for fake meat. Your roast looks delicious.

This looks lovely but is there an alternate ingrediant that could be used for the flour?

No, the gluten flour is what gives it the texture

I love this recipe! I just use plain gluten free flour in mine as I rarely have rice flour or gram flour in. It's fantastic, thank you so much for this video. I like to use this recipe for my Christmas dinner :) Cannot recommend it enough. >goes great with onion gravy!

Why didn’t you just add all the additional ingredients into the food processor bowl and use the fp to mix everything well? Why make more work for yourself, more dishes to wash etc... ☺️

Why didn't you just put it in a loaf tin and cover with foil? The foil doesn't need to touch the surface of the food and can quickly be removed if you need to finish the dish uncovered.

I think everyone should research the recent, well within the past 2 months, dr. Oz show where they talk about gluten intolerance. A specialist on there was saying that if you take a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before consuming anything gluten it will prepare your stomach to be able to eat it and you will not have a reaction. And she broke it down and explain how that all works and why people are intolerant, as well as combating it.
